Eagles welcome back three letterwinners from their NIC Champion season West Hancock girl’s basketball coach, Paul Sonius, recently kicked off his 7th season at the helm of the Eagle program. Kevin Wilson and Dale Hesley assist Sonius. The Eagles welcome back three letterwinners from their 19-4 overall, 14-0 NIC Champion season a year ago. Junior point guard Bailey Eisenman, junior guard Whitney Burgardt and sophomore guard

Maria Gonzalez return to lead the Eagles for the 2013-2014 season. Gonzalez compiled 70 points, 11 assists, 35 steals and 33 rebounds last season, while Eisenman collected 23 points, 27 assists, 14 steals, 28 rebounds, and Burgardt 11 rebounds, eight steals and three assists. Coach Sonius noted the following eight athletes as key varsity players to this year’s roster.

Forward sophomores Kealey Johnson, Cara Francis, Emma Chizek, Monica Loeschen, sophomore guards Emily Leerar, Arely Romero, and freshmen guards Faith Hammer and Kaylee Hudspeth. The Eagles season goals include working towards a winning season and working hard to continue the tradition of West Hancock Basketball.

“We are looking at having a top half of the conference finish, but know will have to work hard to attain it,” noted Coach Sonius. “These girls have been working hard during the off season and we will be ready to go when the season rolls around.” Coach Sonius took note that his team has a lot of work to do but they do have the tools and talent to make a run. “If we continue to

work as a team and support each other I think we will be fine and could surprise some of the teams at the top.” The Eagles officially tippedoff in their first regular season game on Monday, December 2 in Britt against Eagle Grove. West Hancock then traveled to Northwood on Tuesday and hosted Central Springs Friday, December 6.

The West Hancock boys’ basketball team returns five starters from last year’s 10-14 young team for the 2013-2014 season. The Eagles welcome back sophomores Connor Sonius, Nate Paulus, juniors Jordan Savoy, Trevor Nalan and senior Jacob Hejlik to this year’s lineup. Sonius led the Eagles in assists and steals last season with 171 and 71 respectively. He also compiled 270 points, 16 blocks and 114 rebounds for the Eagles. Paulus collected 335 points, 46 assists, 42 steals, two blocks and 61 rebounds last season, while Savoy had 82 points, 21 assists, 18 steals, 14 blocks and 91 rebounds. Nalan compiled 150 points, 25 assists, 25 steals, 10 blocks and 146 rebounds to lead the Eagles a year ago. Hejlik scored 96 points, five assists, 10 steals, 20 blocks

and 99 rebounds. Under the helm of coach Brian Peterson, West Hancock also looks to the following eight athletes as key contributors this season. Senior Cole Weiland, juniors Logan Weiland, Joey DeHart, sophomores Nelson Barraca, Ricky Ibarra, Vicente Gonzalez, and freshmen Dylan Eckels and Seth Weiland. “We are a year older and this team has a better understanding of the West Hancock way,� Peterson said in regards to his team’s strengths this season. “Quickness, shooting and ball handling is very strong. We have multiple guys who can shoot the ball and take it off the bounce. We are very strong off ball defenders and our different presses and we cover the space well.� Coach Peterson noted that his

team’s defense was very poor last year in the half court set which he contributed some to the youth of his team and lack of understanding. “This falls squarely on my shoulders to make sure they understand and we will understand it better this season.� Peterson is pleased with how close his group of athletes is, “their bond, friendship and closeness from 9-12 grade is a welcomed surprise. It is rare to see kids check their ego at the door for the betterment of the team.� Coach Peterson is assisted by Kevin Eisenman, Jay Hiscocks and Jim Becker. The Eagles tipped-off their first official game last week at home against Eagle Grove Monday, December 2. They then headed to Northwood Tuesday and hosted Central Springs Friday.

Eagles welcome return of eight wrestlers Third year head coach, Mark Sanger, welcomes back eight returning wrestlers and seven freshmen to this year’s West Hancock wrestling roster. Three seniors return as letterwinners this season, Hunter Hiscocks (132), Drew Redenius (170) and Uziel Romero (220). Juniors Logan Brown (138), Klayton Lamoreux (152) and sophomores Dakota Peterson (126), Sam Smith (145), Dalton Bates (160) all return to the mat for the 2013-2014 season. Lamoreux and Redenius both were District Qualifiers a year ago.

The Eagles also welcome the following seven freshmen to the program, Clayton Brown (106), J.J. Holland (106), Michael Myers (120/126), Nick Lemmon (126/132), Ernest Duran (126/132), Jordan Weiland (152), and John Fransen (220/285). The Eagles are assisted by Billy Dallman, Doug Doughan, Dave Brown and Paul Francis (junior high). “The biggest challenge we will face this year is inexperience and youth,� noted coach Sanger. “We have a lot of new/young wrestlers whose challenge will be their lack of experience and mat time.�

“The letter winners have had their share of ups and downs thus far in their wrestling careers. Now is the time they need to step up and be the leaders. The time has come where these guys need to start being aggressive and going out and pressing the issue on the mat. We also have a good core of freshmen coming in this year that will contribute, but it is up to the returning letter winners to lead the way.� The Eagles made their wrestling debut last week at home Thursday against Forest City and Emmetsburg. They then headed to a tournament Saturday in Okoboji.

The CWL boy’s basketball team will return seven letterwinners form last year’s roster as the Panthers kickoff their final season in school history. CWL concluded their 20122013 season 5-16, where the team graduated five. Returning as seniors this season are Sam Ludwig, Jared Haler, Casey McGregor, and Stefan Chambers. Joining them on the roster are juniors Esden Carroll, John Genrich and sophomore Grant Carroll. The Panthers improved on their record last year by earning five

wins and losing two additional games by 10 points or less. They hope to continue that trend this year by adding even more to the win column. As a team, CWL scored 841 points, dished out 180 assists, stole the ball 178 times and collected 51 blocks on the season. Additionally, the team collected a total of 702 rebounds, 283 offensive and 419 defensive. Esden Carroll led the Panthers in scoring with 240 points including 31 three pointers. Esden was second on the team last season in both assists and steals with 36 and 39 respectively, and

third in rebounds at 90. Jared Haler led the Panthers last year in assists with 57, while collecting the second most rebounds at 58, and third most steals with 31. Haler scored 43 points for the Panthers. Grant Carroll scored 53 points and collected 11 rebounds last season, Stefan Chambers 26 points and 29 rebounds, Sam Ludwig 18 points and 16 rebounds, while both John Genrich and Casey McGregor each added eight points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers opened up their 2012-2013 season Monday, December 2 against Belmond-

Klemme. CWL then played North Iowa Tuesday, and traveled to the Saint Ansgar Tournament Saturday. They kicked off their conference schedule Monday against Clay Central Everly.

Fresh talent bolsters North Iowa bowling squads The North Iowa bowling teams expect to perform well in their district this season, despite graduating many of last year’s starters. Both squads have a good mix of new and returning

teams. The Lady Bison will be led by All-District bowler and two-time State qualifier Alyssa Knudson, a senior, who returns along with senior Katie Stelter

and sophomores Chelsey Roth and Makeila Shortenhaus. New to this year’s squad are senior Caitlin Sahr and freshmen Megan Davis and Allison Almelien, who Aukes says bring talent and good work ethic to the team. Returning starters for the boys’ squad include senior Josh Clarke and sophomore Zach Dirksen. Also back for the Bison are seniors Dakota Brass and Ryan Schiefelbein, who are joined this season by freshmen

Spencer Armstrong, Noah Melz and Cameron Roth. Coach Aukes notes that both Armstrong and Melz have a lot of experience as junior league bowlers, and he expects them to be the top bowlers for the boys this season. “With the talent we have, we just might surprise some of our opponents,� said Aukes. He sees his teams finishing in the top three in the district, with Waverly-Shell Rock being the favorites.

Bison look to be contenders in rebuilding year The North Iowa Bison will have a lot of fresh faces on the basketball court this season, but they return some key experience as they prepare to battle it out in a competitive conference. It will be a rebuilding year for the Bison, who graduated their entire starting lineup from last season. North Iowa compiled an 18-6 overall record last year and tied for second place in the North Iowa Conference, where they went 10-4. The three players who are returning have a lot of experience, however, as they have contributed to first and second place conference finishes over the past two seasons and a State tournament appearance in 2012. They include center Tate Corporon, guard Derek Yegge and forward Dylan Voortmann – all seniors. They will be joined by seniors Lucas O’Connor, Josh Hofbauer and Daniel Miller, along with juniors Trevor Aukes, Austin

Paden, Taylor Ostermann, Connor Smith and Josh Mathahs. Of the returning players, Corporon and Voortmann each averaged 5 points per game last year, and Yegge shot 78.6% at the free throw line. Corporon averaged 3.3 rebounds, and Yegge and Corporon each had 20 assists last year. Head Coach Chad Hinders is back for his sixth season with the Bison; having compiled a 78-39 record during his tenure so far. He is assisted by coaches Justin Ullmann and Mark Ostermann. “Efficient execution on both ends of the floor will be crucial,� said Hinders of the upcoming season. He says his team will need to work hard on defense to create turnovers and play at a fast pace to maximize their success, and they also need to work out their outside game to keep their opponents on their toes. Hinders says one area the boys will need to work on is their

understanding and execution of game management situations. “Our reserves are seeing their first varsity action, and how fast they pick up on things and perform will dictate our approach to each game,� said Hinders. When it comes to the competition this season, Hinders says no team in the conference

can be overlooked. BelmondKlemme, Forest City and GarnerHayfield/Ventura all placed in the top half of the conference standings last year, and they look to do so again. Osage, Lake Mills and West Hancock all return key players, while Newman Catholic will mix experience with youth this year. “We hope to be in the

conference championship race and finish in the top half, but we know there are a lot of challenges to overcome for that to be accomplished,� said Hinders. Hinders says the Bison will be competitive if they can stay healthy and strive to get better each time they are on the court.

Lady Bison return strong lineup The North Iowa Lady Bison are aiming for the top spot in the North Iowa Conference this season, after tying for second in the NIC last year. Head Coach Rob Riedinger is back for his second season with North Iowa, who went 17-6 overall last year, with a 12-4 record in conference play. Three starters are also back for the Lady Bison, including

seniors Paige Hassebroek, Rachel Boekelman and Krista Hovland. Hassebroek was North Iowa’s top scorer last season with an average of 14.9 points per game; making 48.1% of her field goals and 66.7% of her free throws. She also led the team in rebounds with 190. Boekelman was the team leader in steals with 113 and in assists with 50. Also returning are seniors

Jenna Koppen and Carly Main, juniors Rebecca Murray and Kayla Stelter, and sophomores Mica Johnson and Brooke Hovland. They are joined this season by freshmen Rachel Hassebroek, Kendall Melz and Taylen Hinders. “This team has speed, strength and length to compete and contribute on both ends of the floor,� said Coach Riedinger. He

says some of the things the ladies will be focusing on this season are teamwork, rebounding, keeping turnovers down and getting their free throw percentages up. North Iowa averaged 50 points per game last season, while holding the opposition to an average of 40 points. The Lady Bison averaged 24 rebounds, with a field goal shooting average of 35%. The girls made 26% of their

three-pointers and 57% of their free throws. Riedinger says Garner and Osage will be very tough opponents in the North Iowa Conference this season, but the Lady Bison are looking to compete for the Conference Title. “This is a very competitive conference, so we must compete as a team and use our inside presence and speed to our advantage,� said Riedinger.

Indians set eyes on conference title The Forest City Indians want to bring home a North Iowa Conference Title this season, after winning all of their NIC duals last year. The Indians were 6-0 in the conference last season, with

an overall record of 15-6, but they took third place at the NIC tournament. Steve Staudt returns for his third year as head coach of the Forest City wrestling program, where he has recorded 28 wins and 14 losses. Assisting him are coaches Matt Sesker, Steve Pickar and Andy Eastvold. Forest City is once again joined by several wrestlers from North Iowa High School this season, as four Bison will don the red and white as members of the Indians’ squad. Cardinal Girls Return Experience In a typical year, most basketball coaches will have three or four experienced players returning from the previous season as a foundation for their squad. This is not a typical year for GHV girls’ coach Matt Erpelding. One of Erpelding’s challenges in the early weeks of the season is deciding how to use the wealth of experience that he has available. With four starters returning from last year’s roster and six more players with significant varsity experience, Erpelding should be able to field a fairly competitive team. The Cards got off to a slow start a year ago, losing three of their first four contests before finding some continuity. GHV showed marked improvement as the season progressed, assembling an eight game winning streak at the end of the regular season that included victories in the final six games of North Iowa Conference play. That surge propelled GHV to a runner-up finish in league play at 10 – 4 while completing the season at 16-8. The Cardinals made a good run in the post-season, falling just one game short of a state tournament appearance after losing their Class 3A regional final contest to Spirit Lake. Three senior starters return for the Cardinals this season as Maddie Tusha comes back with impressive credentials. Tusha averaged almost nine points per game as a junior on the way to earning first team all-conference honors. Maddie was also named to the IBCA All-Region 2 roster. Senior Bri Bier’s resume is also

impressive after averaging nine points per game as a junior. Bier was named to the NIC’s second team roster and was also listed as an IBCA All-Region 2 player. Senior Shelby Rayhons will lend her leadership to the team after scoring just under six points per game as a starter a year ago. Rounding out the list of returning starters is junior Mackenzie Haag who averaged almost five points per game a year ago. Adding depth to the mix are six girls that saw significant action in at least 18 games last season. Seniors Courtney Younge and Kim Dornbier hope to find a spot in the rotation as are juniors Emily Spilman, Tiara Van Gerpen, Grace Tusha and Sydney Younge. Senior Olivia Hackbarth along with juniors Mallory Van Oort and Madee Hejna are also hoping to earn a spot in the lineup. In addition, freshmen Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Van Gerpen are expected to compete for playing time as the season progresses. GHV began last season with some adversity and according to Coach Erpelding it is repeating again this year. “Just like last season this season is not off to a real great start as we already have two girls nursing pretty severe injuries. In spite of the injuries, Erpelding maintains high expectations for the squad. “This is a great group of young ladies, all 31 in the program, and I look forward to working with all of them. They are a lot of fun to be around and most importantly are very coachable.�

It would be an understatement to say that last year’s wrestling season was a challenge for Cardinal coach Steve Smith. With only a handful of competitors on the roster, duals were always a nowin situation as GHV had to forfeit over half of the matches each time out. As the 2013 – 14 season begins Smith is optimistic about this year’s outlook as the roster has more than doubled in size. Four senior letter winners will provide leadership to this year’s Cardinal wrestling team. All four begin the season as seasoned veterans in varsity competition and

will look to score consistently for Smith. Nic Tusha is expected to wrestle at 220 pounds for GHV while Brady Baker should fill the 195-pound slot. A.J. Arnold will see action at 138 pounds and Austin Oborny is expected to compete at 126 pounds. Completing the list of returning letter winners for GHV are Colby Reid and Dalton Basinger. Reid, a junior, is expected to fill the 145-pound slot while sophomore Basinger will wrestle at 132 pounds. Newcomers expected to contribute are sophomore 170-pounder Cade Baker along

with freshmen Conner Shaw (152 pounds) and Austin Case (106 pounds). The Cardinal roster has been slim for several consecutive years, meaning Coach Smith is looking forward to being able to field a competitive lineup. Not every slot will be filled in dual action, but giving up only one or two forfeits will be a huge improvement compared to recent seasons. Smith noted that some of the holes are being filled by freshmen so their success will depend on how well they adjust to wrestling against varsity competition.

GHV Boys Expect Another Successful Season When preseason prognosticators peered into their crystal balls a year ago, very few gave the Cardinals any chance of winning the North Iowa Conference title. GHV then proceeded to outlast three other contending schools as the season progressed and the Cardinals earned a North Iowa Conference championship with their league record of 11 – 3. The NIC race is expected to be a battle again this season with three or four teams expected to be in the hunt, but it’s doubtful that GHV will be overlooked this time around. Four key contributors have graduated from last season’s team, but Cardinal coach Joe Albertson has several players waiting in the wings to fill those spots. Albertson will rebuild his lineup around three returning starters and another experienced letter winner, with a number of additional players competing for playing time. Leading the list of returning starters for GHV is senior Joel Toppin. Toppin was a unanimous first team all-conference player last season. Joel returns as GHV’s leading scorer, averaging 13.5

points per game while averaging over three rebounds per contest. Joining Toppin in the backcourt is senior Braden Meints. Braden earned second team all conference honors a year ago after averaging 10 points per game with almost six rebounds per contest. The third returning starter for the Cards is senior Spencer Shaw. Shaw was a play maker for GHV

last season, scoring just under five points per game with an average of three assists each night. Jake Wolf also returns to the roster after gaining valuable experience off of the Cardinal bench last season. At 6’5�, Jake’s size combined with his ability to shoot from the perimeter can present matchup problems for opposing defenses. Wolf scored over four

points per game in a reserve role while averaging five rebounds. Several players from last year’s JV squad will look to earn a spot in this season’s varsity rotation. In the mix are seniors Teddy Zrostlik, Luke Wolf and Jimmy Ermer along with junior Logan Ryerson. Albertson also mentioned sophomore Harley Forry as a potential varsity contributor along with

freshman Holden Hutcheson. Albertson noted that he is relying on returning experience along with a deep bench to help make the Cardinals competitive again this season. The Cardinals will open their season against two very good non-conference opponents before beginning the North Iowa Conference schedule.
