Klemme man helps decorate the White House for Christmas
By Sarah Freesemann KLEMME - The saying ‘like a kid in a candy store’ is exactly how Randy Black of Klemme chose to describe his experience at the White House. Black was one of 83 volunteer designers selected from across the country to help decorate 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this Christmas season. He spent a week in D.C. and returned home on Saturday, Dec. 7. “It is definitely something on every designers bucket list, said Black, a former floral manager at HyVee East in Mason City. “To decorate the highest house in the land is such an honor and experience. Randy has been designing for over 35 years and was very honored to receive a letter this past summer informing him that he had been nominated to decorate the White House this Christmas. “Six to seven people across the state had nominated me, noted Black. “Once I received the letter it was like applying for a job.
Black had to submit his resume, specific lists of qualifications and experiences along with letters of recommendation. “Once I received my letter informing me that I had been accepted, I had to go through a large series of background checks. I eventually got my security clearance and a dream was coming true. Black joined the other volunteer designers and design team from HGTV after Thanksgiving and spent the next week working on bringing the Christmas Spirit alive within the White House. HGTV’s host, Genevieve Gorder, worked along with the volunteers. The episode aired Sunday, Dec. 14. “It was exciting to see the show come together because the cameras were there all week and they shot a lot of footage. The theme for this year’s White House Christmas is “Gather Around which celebrates the stories and tradi-
Outdoor Entrance Randy Black and Genevieve Gorder tions of the season and coming together with loved ones. This year’s decorations also honor military personnel and
families. Black said they decorated 30+ fresh Christmas trees ranging from 7 to 18 in height with an average height of 14 feet. They also worked with fresh garlands, wreaths and a variety of amazing decorations. “I was nicknamed the “bow guy and it was a breath-taking experience that is so memorable, he said. Some of the volunteers he worked with have been doing this for years. “One guy has been decorating the White House for over 30 years now, Black said. “This has really opened the door of opportunity for me and I plan on applying every year for as many
Gingerbread White House years as possible. the candy store. This is the designer’s “I truly felt like a wide-eyed kid in equivalence to that expression. (Photos courtesy of Randy Black)

Football Contest Grand Winners
Mark Buffington, manager of Arnold Motor Supply, presents a $75 gift certificate to both Jess Meints of Klemme and Mike Hilbert of Britt. Mike owns his own construction company and he will probably use his winnings on parts for his vehicles. He was surprised to win since he only entered 3-4 times. Jess works at Tammy’s Pharmacy and won $15 once during the contest. After receiving the gift certificate she immediately ordered a part for her 2001 Nissan. (Photo by Sandy Evans)
Tom Schultz is the winner of the $150 gift certificate being presented by Marie Frederick, owner of Goodnature Store, State of Wear, Unique Boutique and Goodnature’s Work Stop. He is retired from Prairie Energy and lives in Garner. Tom plans on splitting his winnings between his two daughters, one who lives in Garner and the other who lives in Mason City and their children. Tom entered the football contest every week and even won a couple of times. (Photo by Sandy Evans)
The deadline for registering for the Winnebago and Hancock County Conservation Boards’ January 4th motorcoach excursion to Des Moines is fast approaching! People wishing to sign up for the trip should do so by Monday, December 16th to be guaranteed a spot on the bus. The trip can also be offered as a Christmas gift, if reservations are made by the 16th! People wishing to do that can contact either the Hancock or Winnebago County Conservation Boards (see the phone numbers below) for details on how to receive a gift certificate. The first stop of the day on the Janu-
mountains and caves. Besides browsing through the rest of the museum, the group will also enjoy the IMAX movie “Flight of the Butterflies, which details one scientist’s 40-year journey to unravel the mystery of where Monarch butterflies go each fall. The cost of the Des Moines Winter Bus Trip will be $55 for adults aged 18-64, and $50 for kids under 18 and senior citizens over 64. Members of the Friends of Winnebago County Conser-
Final Reminder: Des Moines Bus Trip ary 4th trip will be at the Des Moines Botanical Garden, which was recently closed for three months for renovations. The Garden’s pathways, gardens, and balconies have been improved, and the lobby is now home to Iowa’s first living wall. While at the Garden, people will have the opportunity to stroll through the botanical displays, browse through the Garden’s gift shop (with its assortment of naturally-inspired gifts and books), and enjoy lunch at Trellis, the Garden’s new cafÊ. The warmth of the tropical gardens should provide some nice relief from the cold, Iowa winter!
After visiting the Botanical Garden, the group will head to the Science Center of Iowa. While there, everyone will have a chance to experience the world premiere of the National Geographic exhibit Earth Explorers. Earth Explorers is an interactive exhibit that allows people to explore various biomes much as an actual explorer would. Through the display, people will be able to “visit the polar regions, the oceans, the rainforests, and the savannas, as well as
vation Foundation will receive an additional $5 discount. Those prices will cover the motorcoach transportation, all admission fees, and the IMAX movie. Lunch at the Botanical Garden and a meal stop on the way home are not included. Most likely, departure locations will be in Forest City and Garner, but other departure locations may be added depending upon who registers for the trip. To register, people simply need to send a check (made out to the WCCB),

Do you know what ethanol does for America? Ethanol has helped to add 4.5 billion bushels of corn demand in the U.S. since 2000. Corn prices have been increased by 80¢ to $1.00 per bushel due to ethanol demand. Ethanol saves consumers between 50 cents and $1.50 per gallon in gasoline prices. Over 400,000 direct and indirect jobs with many in rural areas.
EPA-HQ-OAR-2013-0479 2014 Standards For The Renewable Fuel Standard Program Dear Administrator McCarthy:
We need your help to urge the Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to restore strong blending levels for 2014 under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Just three weeks ago the EPA unveiled a proposal that would gut the RFS and jeopardize rural economies. POET is asking for your help! Iowans are urged to defend the RFS and protect the rural economy by writing your personal comments of support to the EPA asking them not to reduce the RFS mandates for renewable fuels. Please see our website (http://poet.com/hanlontown local cash corn bids) for more details. Please write your comments on the cutout form at the left and return to POET-Hanlontown, 3638 Fir Ave; Hanlontown, IA 50444 The EPA proposal lowers the “corn ethanol” level from 13.8 billion gallons in 2013 to only 13.0 billion gallons in 2014. The proposal also freezes the biodiesel level at 1.28 billion gallons despite the fact the biodiesel industry is currently operating at an annualized rate of 2.00 billion gallons.
Sincerely,

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

First Lego League teams earn awards at competition On Saturday, December 7, four FIRST LEGO League 4-H teams from Hancock County headed for Cedar Falls in the early morning hours to participate in a regional robotics competition. It all paid off when the teams won five awards. Team F.I.R.E. (Future Intelligent Creative Engineers) won first overall and was awarded the Championship Award and a trophy. Team I.C.E. (Innovative Creative Engineers) won for best robotic mission total (315 points) and also received a State Qualifiers Trophy. Team Flip the Switch won a trophy for being first in Core Values. Team L.A.B. (LEGO Adapting Brains) received honorable mention in the Project Award category. Flip the Switch and LAB will see if they get to advance once the last regional is completed on December 15. There are only 72 spots at state for over 300 teams in Iowa. “These FIRST LEGO League (FLL) 4-H teams had put in many hours of hard work preparing for the Regional competition that included judging in Core Values, Robot/Technical, Project, and Missions, said Carol Opp, School Enrichment Coordinator for Hancock County ISU Extension Service. Nature’s Fury, the FLL challenge for this year, came out the end of August.
From there the members had to build a robot and program it to do missions that would score the maximum amount of points in 2 ½ minutes. They had to pick a natural disaster and then develop an innovative solution to a problem with that disaster. This idea needed to be presented in 5 minutes to a panel of 3 judges. Teams had to interview with other judges on the robot-why they built it the way they did, what worked well, what missions they chose, did they use sensors, etc. The other part of the overall judging was Core Values. Teams go into a room with judges (no parents or coaches allowed) to do a team building exercise. They answer questions about Gracious Professionalism and how their team worked together to achieve their goals. •Team FIRE developed a solution to alert rural people of the world that have no electricity about a natural disaster. They will use a solar panel found in a SafeTHome (need trademark sign) to power a weather alert system.
•Team ICE made a Sole of Safety that consists of two pouches that hold safety supplies and when you remove those, the pouches can be used as shoes. •Team Flip the Switch took the existing technology of the Dart System to provide a way to quickly distribute warning information to all available devices. •Team LAB developed the tornado survival kit that has a helmet, goggles, respirator, whistle, and blanket that all was adapted to have close at hand to protect you during a tornado attack. “I look forward to FLL, it has taught me another way of looking at science and technology,â€? said Brody Boehnke, a member of FIRE. “Lego League makes science and technology fun,â€? added Jace Pringnitz. Brother Joe Pringnitz agreed. “You always learn something and everyone has fun,â€? he said. Jade Pringnitz: “ Lego league helps develop lots of different skills, you learn how to problem solve using science, technology, engineering and math, how
to interview and answer questions under pressure and always treat everyone with respect, what we call gracious professionalism. “Team members learned a lot through this experience about science, technology, engineering, and math, said Opp. “What can be considered even more important is that they learned to work together as a team, build others up, that the effort is worth more than the outcome, respect for others, and great communication skills. Some of these teams are going to pursue a patent for their innovative solutions. Teams are made up of young people ages 9-14 and are limited to ten members per team. FLL 4-H teams are sponsored by Hancock County Extension, Iowa Department of Health-Youth Development, Hanson Foundation, Hancock County Foundation, and Cargill. Anyone interested in learning more about FLL can contact the Extension Office at 641/923-2856 or Carol Opp at carolopp@iastate.edu.
