By Nick Pedley West Fork Superintendent Darrin Strike reported that the school district received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the Department of Education following their visit earlier this month. Strike presented the findings to the board of education at their meeting Monday in Rockwell. The site visit, which is mandated for each Iowa school district every five years, provides state officials with an update on a school’s programming and progress while simulaneously shedding light on areas that need improvement. Overall, Strike said officials were impressed. “In a nutshell, they thought that we had a lot of nice things in place, he said. Strike explained the findings from the Department of Education were just a preliminary report, and the final statement would come within the next few months. While most of it was highlighted by positive remarks, Strike explained the report came with a few suggestions. The district got docked for a lack of fencing around the playgrounds, which will be a relatively easy fix. Strike said the district will have to completely surround the playgrounds to come into compliance. Additionally, the report suggested the district could improve its special education program by monitoring student progress better. Officials felt the district could do a better job of goal-setting for the students, and they also suggested special education teachers spend more time in an instructional role with students. “That’s something we’re dealing with from an administrative level, and we’re trying to figure out if we have the right structure in place to accomplish that, Strike said. Strike explained the district will have to submit a corrective action plan and put it in place by next fall to fix the issues. “I think the Department of Education is right on target with this, he said. “Our data is showing that what we’re using might not be 100 percent effective. There were areas to improve upon, but the board was content with report’s findings. Principal Randy Bushbaum said it was one of the most positive site visits he’s SCHOOL BOARD to page 5

Supervisors move forward with emergency dispatchers agreement By Nick Pedley Contract negotations with Hampton’s emergency dispatchers inched forward Monday after the Franklin County Board of Supervisors gave their approval of a document outlining salary and benefit details for the group. The supervisors gave the goahead for a memorandum of understanding between the City of Hampton and Teamsters Local 238, which is representing the dispatch-
Board Chair Corey Eberling explained the supervisors needed to review the memorandum of understanding to make sure the fiscal details of the document aligned with county standards. The dispatchers will eventually move to a countyfunded agency – the FCEMC – which necessitated the supervisors’ oversight. “What we did was kind of work off the city’s attorney, said Eber SUPERVISORS to page 5

The 911 dispatchers have tried for the past two years to come to terms with the city and county on a contract that would switch their employment over to the county-level under the Franklin County Emergency Management Commission (FCEMC). Once a deal is reached, the dispatchers can move from the Hampton Police Department to the Franklin County Law Enforcement Center and begin duties there.

Chapin Station owners Holly and Randy Coffee opened the gift shop in October following months of remodeling to the former gas station and repair shop. (Photo by Nick Pedley) cutouts have been extremely popular since the business opened during the fall. “It really depends on the crowd, Holly said. “One week we’ll sell a lot of something, then the next time it’ll be something else. Holly’s no stranger to running a small business. She previously owned Little Bit Country in Sheffield prior to starting a job at Sukup Manufacturing. She said she enjoyed the challenge of opening up a new store, even though some might think she’s a little crazy doing so in Chapin. “It’s been amazing. I advertise all over, and we get people in here from bordering states. If someone’s home to visit family or something, a lot of them will make it a point to come in and
make a trip out of it, she said. Chapin Station is open one weekend each month, but the business held extra hours in December to accommodate holiday traffic. Holly said she’s enjoyed improving one rundown property in town but has shifted her attention to another eyesore. She said she and Randy would like to purchase the old church and turn it into a community center for local residents. “Everyone says I’m crazy here in Chapin for wanting to fix up the church. They say, ‘That thing’s falling apart!’ And I say, ‘Well, so was this!’ “ she said. “So much of the small towns are just getting torn down, but I think it’s important to preserve. I’m all about the history.

December 19, 1963 Sheffield-Chapin cage teams won a pair of North Star conference games on the Sheffield hardwood Friday night. The local girls posted a 76 to 51 win over MeserveyThornton girls in the opener for a 5-1 record. Spartans eked out a 50 to 49 win in the boys games in a tightly played contest which found both clubs in the lead spasmodically, and the visitors closing in fast from a five-point deficit as the contest ended. This gives Spartans a 5-0 conference record. Spartanettes took an early lead and held quartertime advantages of 19-13, 42-24, 64-33 and the final 76-51. Coach Harold Grunhovd used his entire suited squad. Leona Bruhn hit with 10 doubles and 17 of 21 gift shots for 37 points and game scoring honors. Pam Atkinson swished the nets for 23 counters, Donna Foell 10 and Bev Levitt 6. Norma Kothenbeutal and Ilene Schmalbeck failed to connect. Karen Emhoff, Diane Grunhovd, Jane Frey at guard were assisted by Linda Bonjour, Jeanne Brayton and Vicki Schreiber. The team is credited with 23 field goals and 30 of 42 free throws. They were charged with 20 fouls. Spartans 50, Lancers 49 – This was a nip and tuck contest all the way, each team getting the lead intermittently. Aside from the 12-12 first quarter reading Spartans held the edges 26-25, 42-39 at rest periods and the final 50-49. The score was tied at 5, 7, 12, 14, 32 and 39. Spartans got a five-point edge at 44-49 and 50-45, before the visitors started to close in for the hoped-for victory. Coach Dave Long’s boys played for possession in final minute and squeezed through a one-point 5049 win. The game was equally close in the final tally. Both teams made 19 field goals. Spartans netted 12 of 16 free throws. Lancers made 11 of 18 single shots. Charged were 21 fouls on the visitors and 17 against
the winners. Ron Foell pumped in 9 doubles and 5 of 6 free throws for 23 points and game high point man. Butch Skovgard and Rick Taylor both netted 8 points, Dick Larson 7 and Gary Heflin 4. Chuck Schmalbeck did not score and with three early fouls was handicapped under the basket. Heflin grabbed 12 rebounds, Skovgard and Schmalbeck each 8. Sheffield shotgun deer hunters in two parties near Lansing bagged 22 deer during the three-day season which ended Monday, and 10 deer were brought back to Sheffield. Saturday opening day was by far the most productive in deer kill with each party bagging six for a total of 12. Snow covered the ground and made hunting easier, but was not sufficient to keep the hillsides from being slippery. The intense cold and sharp wind on Sunday took some of the thrill out of the chase. Last year local hunters in that area brought back four deer and in preceding years they brought back 3 and 6 respectively. The hunters went to the Lansing camps on Friday. Matt Bechtal and son, Danny, and Ed Buss, hunting with 14 from that area bagged 12 deer. Matt and Ed brought deer home, Matt getting one on opening day and Ed on Sunday. The other party of 24 hunters bagged 10 deer, six on Saturday, one Sunday and three on Monday. Dale Mahn, the most constant scorer, again bagged his deer. Others bagging deer were Richard Atkinson, E. A. Mateer, Bill Mateer, Marvin Thomas, Dale Lahner, E. S. Schrupp, Cecil Peter of Sheffield; Bob Mahn of Woden, and Wally Burns of St. Ansgar. Bob Mahn had the most unusual trials and tribulations of his deer hunting career. He was bitten on the leg by a dog, chased around a haystack and wagon by a bull until the farmer came a got him with a pick-up truck, slipped into the ditch with

December 22, 1983 The Sheffield-Chapin Spartans remained in a first place tie in the North Star Conference to up their North Star Conference mark to 4-0. The S-C offense was as cold as the weather in the opening quarter against the Klemme Shamrocks as S-C connected on only four of 13 attempts and trailed 13-8. The Spartans shooting hands warmed up in the second period, scoring 23 points and wrestling the lead away from the Klemme 31-25 at halftime. The locals couldn’t quite shake the Shamrock as the game remained close throughout the second half with S-C stopping Klemme 5952 for the victory. Senior Parrish Plagge led the Spartans down victory lane, having an outstanding performance scoring 26 points, pulling down 15 rebounds and making four steals. Brian Smit had a big second half scoring 12 of his 17 points. Pete Lahner also scored in double figures with ten points and was credited with five steals. A Christmastime evolution Every family has their own holiday traditions. Some travel to visit relatives, some stay home and some do nothing at all. It depends on your preferences, and I’ve started to notice a shift in the way even my own family celebrates Christmas each year. I’d say I grew up adhering to relatively standard holiday traditions. Each year I’d visit Santa Claus at the Town Hall; I’d recite one or two lines in the pageant at church; and I enjoyed tearing open presents on Christmas morning. It was as status quo as any other kid growing up in the Midwest, I imagine. My family had their own special holiday traditions as well. We’d head over to my grandparents on Dec. 24 for Christmas on my mom’s side, then we’d go to Christmas on my dad’s side the next night. Sand-
wiched in between was Christmas at our own house. We’d open presents, enjoy an omelet brunch around 10:30 a.m. and sip mimosas throughout the morning (sparkling grape juice and OJ for me and my sister). However, things gradually started to change over the years. We no longer had a large celebration at my grandparents’ house each Christmas Eve, as my cousins began starting their own families with their own traditions. Gradually, I lost interest in Santa and quit buying the spiel around age 9 as well. To top it all off, my parents opted to forego the annual trip to the tree farm in favor of an artificial one, which never quite sat well with my sister and I. It seemed Christmas and its traditions had lost some of their glimmer,

and the holiday fell into somewhat of a lull for me for a brief while. I just simply lost track of what made the season so special, but all that’s turned around in recent years. I credit nobody other than my niece and nephew for my turnaround. These two youngsters have reinvigorated a sense of childhood amusement about Christmas within me, and it’s extended to nearly every facet of the holiday in recent years. First and foremost, Santa Claus is very real once again. My nephew was quick to tell me last year that he needed to be nice to his little sister or else he wouldn’t get any presents. His younger sister was a little less versed in Christmastime lore, but she knew right away who packed all the unwrapped presents underneath the tree last Christmas Eve. “Santa! she shrieked when I asked her who brought her a Minnie Mouse toy. It’s simply just fun watching a young child get so excited over Christmas. I really look forward to gift-opening time, but not for my own selfish purposes. Seeing my niece and nephew rip into presents brings back my own visceral memories of tearing up wrapping

paper as a child. Whether it was a Power Ranger or Play Dough set, I couldn’t wait to see what was next. Now, I can’t wait to see what they get next. Finally, these two kids got me thinking about the real reason for the season. My nephew was in his first pageant last year and he reminded me on Christmas Eve that it was Jesus’ birthday tomorrow. He couldn’t quite get through his short line at the play that night, but I think he might this year. Another year older, another year braver. Christmas has sort of reverted back its glory days of my youth now that I think about it. My sister and brother-in-law bought my grandparents’ house, and we restarted the tradition of hosting a Christmas Eve get together there. We go to the Christmas pageant, and Santa once again graces us with his presence, even though it’s not for me anymore. The tree is still fake, but I guess you’ve got to pick your battles. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas surrounded by the ones you love. It’s a special time of the year, and I hope all of you appreciate the time spent with family and friends

‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the office . . . it’s busy! If I’m not working on the paper . . . or printing . . . I’m out taking pictures of things at school, ballgames, or other events. And enjoying it! Had what I call a rush job on the newer press. Printed one side on Monday . . . and started the second side Tuesday a.m. A few thousand done when the press decided to miss feed and sent a sheet through the rollers. You have no idea how happy that made me! I had my Tuesday schedule all made out . . . and that ruined that! An hour and half later I’m back up and running. But . . . the schedule went down the drain. I guess that’s what I get for planning! Anyway . . . the rest of the week . . . so far . . . is going

A look back at the year in review December gives us a chance to close the books on 2013. As I look back on the past year and review what the Legislature was able to come together and accomplish, I am pleased about the strong bipartisan work that was done to strengthen middle class. Plenty of attention is given to big pieces of legislation but there are less talked about initiatives that have a significant impact on our state. Even if they do not grab headlines, these things contribute to our efforts to increase opportunities for Iowans. This year we focused on empowering the next generation of Iowans by investing in education. We enabled the ability to create entrepreneurial education accounts so that students can develop skills related to starting and running a business. We fought to keep college education accessible by freezing tuition at our state universities. That is something that had not happened in decades. We also had a number of items that should help ensure there are opportunities for young Iowans to stay here. The beginning farmer program was expanded to help the next generation continue the legacy of agricultural leadership in Iowa. A targeted small business program will make microloans available to the small businesses that are the backbone of our communities and engines of growth. To increase opportunities for to-
day’s workers, we must address the skills gap. This year we provided over $10 million for new initiatives that offer education and training for Iowa’s workers. This investment will help Iowans get the training they need to access new careers. The more progress we make in developing a skilled workforce, the more we will enable job growth and high-paying careers. Too often I hear from a company who wants to hire but is having trouble finding qualified workers to fill the job. When the problem becomes more serious, a business owner can feel like they need to move the jobs out of the state. We need to make sure that does not happen. Investing in better-educated graduates and better-trained adults is a smart way to let everyone know that Iowa is committed to providing the best workforce in the country. When we do that, opportunities in communities large and small with abound. Those opportunities are critical to strengthening our middle class and must always be a focus for us in the Legislature. I think we have made progress in 2013, and we need to build on that in 2014. This holiday season, be safe, stay warm and have a Merry Christmas! I appreciate hearing from you. down the way it should. The next two weeks will be a day short, and we will have to get the paper done a day early. I thought Monday holidays were bad. Wednesdays ain’t fun, either! But I’m guessing we’ll make it work. Have for more years than I’m going to admit! Home . . . took last Thursday off to head to Altoona and finish? Christmas shopping with Angela. She also took me out to dinner as it was my 36 1/2 birthday . . . the second time! A little more shopping and we went to pre-school to pick up Little Lid. She knew it was my birthday and told everyone at school! Back to the house and the two of them had made me a birthday cake. Lidia did the decorating? Ever had a German chocolate cake with sprinkles! A whole bottle! I have now. And loved it! She was so proud that she helped baked “Papa a cake. Friday back to the job . . . two pictures in the afternoon and a ballgame at night. Saturday decided to wrap presents . . . and then changed my mind! I’ve still got more than a week I thought. It is now less than a week and the job still isn’t done! Sunday back to Altoona to watch Lidia sing during the worship service at their church. These are things I really enjoy doing. Out for dinner and back to their house. Lidia had sung in the worship service at 8:00 a. m., and the one at 11:00 a.m. Guess who needed a nap by now? I headed back north and spent some time here at the office before just relaxing the rest of the day. Monday evening back to school to take pictures and enjoy the high school winter concert. Then back to work to start proofing pages. I’m still undecided when and where I will spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day . . . but I know time will be spent with the family and friends. Due to the Wednesday holiday . . . I’m not sure when The Press will be out next week. So . . . I want to say “MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE! Be good, Kids+! It’s Showtime!

The cribbage boys are a hardihood group that possesses a great sense of jocose and a tad of ochlophobia I think! Now isn’t that a mouthful to start out the cribbage day or are they words only people from another planet would know????? Okay then, Monday was a day packed with all thumbs dealing, cob webs when counting and of course old Billy Bob (that be a NOLTE) trying to slip one by his foe and then have that sly grin like; “I would never do that. Oh ya sure Billy Boy and the Pope is Lutheran. We broke out a new deck of cards and old Ronnie Boy Symens right in there proceeded to spray them all over the floor and tried to blame it on the slippery cards rather than his clumsy all thumbs shuffling style. To top that off he ended up dealing himself a 24 hand, is there a message there or what? Ron is a man of scruples, integrity and oh yes whatever that is that big non-cow animal drops. He came sporting in a new pickup and said his wife Donna bought it for him because he’s so sweet. Oh Donna, (that a song) how we do feel for you in so many ways. We usually have two tables with winners moving up and losers moving down and switching partners. Well ol dingy-ringy Dickeeee Brownski sat at the losers table so long we had to pry him off the chair. It was one of those days when ya wished you woulda stayed in the sack. He had so many zero hands we started calling him Zilch! His motto now is: “if it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all. Robert Bobby Under the N Cockram found himself on a hot streak. His pegging was irrigating to his foe, whoops guess that should be irritating but then it carries the same result. Ol Dilly Dally Slagle changed partners and then called his ex-partner his enema instead
of enemy, Iva always said he had trouble pronouncing words! Tommy the ol golf General keeps wanting us to have stand by inspection before we begin each session. A few problems arise there as none of us can suck our tummies in, throw out our chest or stand that long. Garth Gar Garee Nelsonie loves to use his fishing tactic when playing. He baits his opponent and when the bobber goes down he yanks on the line as he triples them up. Daveee (she’s a quart low), Levitter continues to taunt ol Billy Bob by reminding him that Dave was in the A section and Billy Bob in the D section. I truthfully wonder if either one ever went to school. Dave created a new cribbage move, he played a card and then changed his mind.. BUT..he said whoops so that’s the key from now on. No whoops no replay. You know this crew is aging as there are grunts when they sit down and bigger grunts when they get up. If we had a time limit with penalty when moving from table to table we would all be in deep dodo! Okay the heat is shut off the lights turned out and another session completed. Levitt told me he saw two blondes walk into a building and he wondered why one of them didn’t see it. Ronnie said he went to Penny’s looking for camouflage pants but could not find them. Old twinkle toes Severe went to a Sea Food Disco and pulled a muscle. Whoa now enough of that nonsense, time to peel potatoes, grind the meat, sautÊ the onions and prepare supper for Bev. Christmas is closing in and since I won’t appear here until next year, Bev and I sincerely wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happiest of Happy New Year’s. So then it’s out with Bazinga for 2013 and a big into BAZINGA for 2014.

Words cannot express the gratitude we have for the volunteer firefighters of Latimer, Sheffield, Thornton, Coulter, Meservey, Swaledale, the emergency response team of West Franklin EMS & Franklin General Ambulance. They did an excellent job in getting our fire contained and saving our surrounding buildings. I am sure all of these volunteers would rather have been doing something else besides working with water in extremely cold conditions but we are so very thankful that they came to our aid. You have our deepest respect. We would also like to thank you family members, friends, and neighbors for their support, helping with food and warm drinks. Your hearts are huge and we are happy that we have a small place in each of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped out on that cold Saturday morning fire. In addition to the site visit report, Strike updated the board on athletic conference discussion. He said the Corn Bowl Conference sent letters to area schools inviting them to join the league, but there was no interest. Strike said there was talk about combining the Corn Bowl, North Iowa and North Central conferences and breaking the “super-conference down into different levels. However, all discussion was speculative at this point. “The biggest thing on this is that there’s a lot up in the air, said Strike. “Keep in mind, there’s a lot going on. A Big Thank You to the EMT crew who were so quick to respond to my son’s call when I had my stroke. Your quick response and your swift actions saved my life. Also, I can’t thank my son, Tom, enough for his ability to see that I was in trouble. Tom’s quick reaction will never be forgotten. Thank You to the Legionaires and the Auxiliary for their calls, visits, card and plant. Thank You to Pastor Wills for your prayers and visits. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Luverne Becker pop up. Hampton Mayor Shawn Dietz was on hand to represent the city during discussion. He said city officials echoed the supervisors’ sentiments and felt the terms in the memorandum of understanding offered the best shot at finalizing a deal. “Yeah, absolutely. The city manager [Ron Dunt] and I reviewed it, and we had absolutely no problems. I agree with Jerry, we have to keep moving, Dietz said. If the memorandum is approved by the dispatchers, officials can move forward with the countywide 28E agreement. “I think that’s kind of where we’re at right now. But I’m comfortable with what we came up with, said Eberling. “The 28E agreement is what throws all the wrinkles into it. The supervisors expressed desire to have everything hashed out and in place so the dispatchers can begin work at the law enforcement center by July 1, 2014. Franklin County Sheriff Larry Richtsmeier said he planned to advise the FCEMC at their meeting Tuesday to purchase the necessary dispatch equipment before Jan. 1 so the county’s pre-negotiated grants and discounts don’t expire. “The nice thing about it is that we have a place we can store and install it right away, said Richtsmeier. County and city officials will now play the waiting game, but both entities felt confident that a deal was near. “I was hopeful we’d have as much of the red tape aspects of it buttoned up by Jan. 1, and I think we’re close to that, said Dietz.

West Fork in control: Warhawks fly by West Hancock at a frantic pace By Kristi Nixon SHEFFIELD – Everything about sixth-ranked (Class 2A) West Fork’s 84-62 boys basketball win over West Hancock indicated that it was in complete control. But to witness it, the game had moments where both were moving at a frenetic pace that were absolutely dizzying. The Eagles jacked up 29 threepointers, hitting 10 of them to try to keep the pace with an extremely fast offense that is the Warhawks. The recipient of that fast pace was 6-foot-5 senior forward Sam Amsbaugh. “They stop whoever they are going to guard,” Amsbaugh said. “With Hunter (Myers) and Spencer (Halloran) who both take it to the hole and shoot it well. Drew (Engebretson) is an outstanding shooter, and (Evan) Sprung is a great post presence, too. They chose to guard them tonight and those guys made good passes to me.” Amsbaugh scored 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line with a pair of college recruiters watching. And he feels like he and his teammates are in mid-season form just two games into the season. “Most definitely, yeah,” Amsbaugh said. “Last year was our first year with a new coach and a new system and everything. Now we have a year under our belt, knowing the offense. We’re three months ahead of where we were in practice from last year and that has helped that much.” After taking a 33-9 first quarter lead, three Warhawks picked up their second fouls (Engebretson, Myers and Halloran) early on and West Hancock picked up the pace, hitting a couple of threes to outscore West Fork 20-6 before half. “Anytime you play a team that is known for driving to the basket, trying to get to the free throw line and people hitting threes can be dangerous,” West Fork coach Frank Schnoes said. “There was a span in the game there they started hitting a few threes and you can get yourself back into a ballgame pretty quick. “But I was happy with the way we responded in the second half. We have to go through that, otherwise down the road if it doesn’t happen then all of a sudden you’re in the tournament and you don’t know how to respond.” Schnoes said he was happy with the team’s start and pleased to see several on his bench on the floor when the game still had meaning. “Coach (Brian) Peterson’s club
Hunter myers (12) goes up for 2. (JZ Photo) did a nice job of adjusting and dropping that full court off and working their way back into the game a little bit,” Schnoes said. “They are a good, young team, so I think they are going to give some teams some grief in their conference this year.” Halloran finished with 17 points, Evan Sprung added 10 and Myers dished out seven assists in the convincing victory. But the Eagles kept dropping threes to fire up their crowd, but the closest they came to West Fork in the second half was a 10-point deficit at 51-41 with 3 minutes, 43 seconds to go in the third quarter. And the foul situation kept mounting for both teams. They combined for 34 fouls (17 apiece) and one Eagle fouled out. “They would make a three, you know, but we were always up 1525,” Amsbaugh said. “We knew we had to take care of business and we got it. “It definitely got a little chippy there, but we just had to play through that stuff and play smart.” And Amsbaugh kept out of the fray by simply scoring, impressing coaches from Waldorf and Iowa Wesleyan Colleges who both talked to him after the game. He added six assists. “He’s been playing pretty well,” Schnoes said. “He’s really not taken time off all year, playing some AAU ball, and he works at his game and the kids do a nice job of finding him and he also does a nice job of seeing the other kids and he’s unselfish, even though he scored a lot tonight. “Kids are finding him at the right place at the right time and it’s nice for him to be that consistent. He just

so much, being in better position. Sometimes when you get on them so fast, you have a tendency to pick on them and reach for the ball and that’s something we’re trying to get away from. “We’re going to play aggressive and we’re going to get out and that type of stuff.” A true team effort, two players finished in double figures with Lindsey Peterson tallying a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Sydney Shreckengost added 11 points and four steals. Courtney Larson and Madison Shreckengost each posted nine points with Larson pulling down six boards, handing out four assists and coming up with four more steals. West Fork throttles conference foe SHEFFIELD – Sixth-ranked West Fork’s boys basketball team left no doubt as to the outcome of its conference match-up with visiting North Butler on Friday, Dec. 13. The Warhawks (4-0) took a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and never let off the gas as they downed the Bearcats, 83-48. Sam Amsbaugh continues to have a hot hand, throwing in 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. Evan Sprung, who scored 14, was 7-of-7. Amsbaugh had an overall solid night, leading in rebounds with eight as well as assists and steals with four apiece. Drew Engebretson added seven points, three assists, two steals and block. West Fork girls roll by West Hancock By Kristi Nixon SHEFFIELD – After yielding the opening basket, West Fork’s girls basketball team scored 15 unanswered and left no one wondering the outcome of its first home contest against West Hancock, 70-31, on Monday, Dec. 9. The Warhawks were aggressive early and often in building a 35-point lead mid-way through the third quarter to start a continuous clock. West Fork came up with 15 steals and forced the Eagles into countless turnovers with its pressure, but also committed 21 fouls to send them to the free throw line. “We still have to do a better job of being smart,” West Fork coach Rodney Huber said. “Not fouling

The second half, we played better. Even if it’s an opponent we beat up on, I’m still looking at things to get better in a game. That’s our mantra right now. “These first four games, coming into North Butler, we have to be better.” Guritz added that she felt the team looked good going up against the Bearcats.

Kenzie Siemens, who was scoreless in the first half, broke out in the second to lead all scorers with 18 points for the Bearcats (4-1, 2-0) in their 60-48 win over the Warhawks in Corn Bowl Conference action. Channing Wunsch added 15 and Haley Landers 10 for the visitors, who trailed 26-21 at halftime only to rally. Although the Bearcats were out-rebounded by the Warhawks 32-31, they were balanced with six for Wunsch and five apiece for Marisa Speedy, Emily Dolan and Siemens. West Fork’s Courtney Larson
had a team-high 11 points, added five assists, four rebounds and a steal for the Warhawks before fouling out. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Greetings
... and many “Thanks!” This holiday season we would like to express appreciation to those friends and neighbors who have done business with us throughout 2013.
Gary Schriver, a member of the Sheffield Lions Club and Lions District Governor for this area of Iowa, who is blind, presented a program on the Seeing Eye Dog program of Lions Club to students of the West Fork elementary school at Sheffield and Rockwell on Friday, Dec. 13. Shown left to right are: Gary and his seeing eye dog, Logan, Pastor Kim Will, Elaine Schriver, and Larry Olk. Pastor Will, Elaine and Larry are all members of the Sheffield Lions Club.
“A good problem to have”– Franklin Co. Food Pantry tight on space By Nick Pedley The holidays usually usher in a sweeping mood of generosity and kindness this time of year, and nowhere is that giving spirit more evident than at the Franklin County Food Pantry. “That’s our biggest problem – space,” said Food Pantry director Betty Springer. “If we put a large order in this room, there’s just no space.” Springer was busy placing a donation of saltines and other goods on a shelf in a small room inside the Community Resource Center at Hampton. The Food Pantry uses two rooms inside the building, both of which were packed wall-to-wall with non-perishable food items like canned vegetables, pasta and soup. Springer said an uptick in holiday donations has forced the Food Pantry to seek out other storage options during busy winter months, but their hands are somewhat tied. The current location is ideal for both clients and volunteers alike – it’s handicapaccessible and sufficiently accommo-
dates the elderly and other patrons. “We like it here, it’s good for the people,” Springer said. “I can’t imagine there’s something that can have access like this.” Springer has explored potential short-term solutions with countylevel officials recently with hopes of fixing the Food Pantry’s storage needs. She met with the board of supervisors on Dec. 9 and detailed the seasonal spatial issues; however, neither Springer nor the supervisors could figure out a fix. “That’s a good problem to have!” said Supervisor Jerry Plagge at the Dec. 9 meeting. “We appreciate you coming in and explaining the problem, but right now we don’t have a solution.” Among the solutions discussed at the meeting was finding a new location for the Food Pantry, which both parties felt was a last option. The supervisors proposed that the Food Pantry use the hallways or lobby of the Community Resource Center as a short-term solution for storage needs,
but issues persisted with that idea as well. Putting goods in the hallway and lobby could violate fire code in addition to creating an eyesore. “It’s not a good atmosphere to walk into a mess,” Springer said. Springer also pointed out that placing orders in the hallway and lobby would make it difficult for volunteers to transport them to the shelves. Many of the workers are elderly, and would find it difficult to constantly lift and move goods like heavy cans. Currently, two tables in both storage rooms allow workers to put food on the surface prior to placing it on the shelf, creating a shorter reach. “I can do it, but it’s not all that comfortable to go down on the floor,” she said, pointing out nearly all of the Food Pantry’s volunteers are older than her. “The physical factor of trying to move stuff would be impossible.” Springer said she would continue to explore options within the Community Resource Center. She said the possibility of utilizing another room in the building exists, but it currently
houses records and other paperwork. She said the seasonal crunch on space shouldn’t deter locals from donating food to the pantry because it sees more use during the holidays. “We just need an empty room, we don’t even want it permanently,” Springer said. “I don’t know what the solution is.”
We appreciate your loyalty and are sincerely grateful for the gift of your friendship. We look forward to serving you in 2014! Alden

Local author publishes book detailing history of area parochial schools By Nick Pedley Mason City author and Dougherty native John Cunningham has published yet another book chronicling a portion of the area’s history. Cunningham recently released, “Roots and Connections to Newman Catholic School System: A History of Cerro Gordo County Catholic Schools.” The book details the timeline that led to the opening of Newman Catholic in 1961 and also provides a history of the many local parochial schools prior to its creation. “The book has a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Every time you open it you’ll find something new,” Cunningham said. Cunningham began the book two years ago and wrapped up work in October. He said the intended purpose was to preserve the rich history and heritage of the area’s parochial school system, and felt it would be a worthwhile keepsake for the many people who were educated in the institutions over the years. “I am old enough and thankful to be able to share an education system and its many experiences of the school in operation in past years and today,” Cunningham wrote in a release. “These schools provided a good education system that also
taught us faith and values.” Cunningham explained each chapter in the book covers the history of different local parochial schools: St. Patrick’s at Dougherty, Holy Ghost Academy and Sacred Heart in Rockwell; St. Francis Academy and St. Joseph’s in Mason City; Holy Family in Mason City and Sacred Heart in Manly. Numerous local parishes from Mason City, Clear Lake, Manly, Plymouth, Rockwell, Cartersville, Swaledale, Hampton, Dumont and Geneva all helped contribute to Newman’s founding, which Cunningham felt connected the book to nearly every community throughout the immediate area.
