Treasures both old and new abound in former Chapin gas station By Nick Pedley Months of hard work and dedication have begun to pay dividends for Chapin Station owners Holly and Randy Coffee. The couple has seen a steady crowd of customers come through the doors of their recently-opened gift shop in the tiny Franklin County town. The Coffees came into possession of the building in July and spent the summer and fall preparing the former gas station for its October grand opening. Construction crews, electricians and other contractors completed extensive remodeling work and transformed the run-down building into a suitable shop that now houses antiques, knickknacks and other crafts. “Basically, we gutted it completely, said Randy. “We took everything back to the studs and

built it back up from there. The renovation process was long, and the Coffees admitted they ran into a few bumps along the way. Raccoons and other vermin had made the building their own after the gas station closed years ago, and they left their presence known. The couple explained extensive cleaning was needed in addition to the remodeling. “There was this smell in here when we first took possession of it, Holly said. “We had to clean everything – the floors – everything. Once the internal work like dry walling and insulating began, Holly started collecting merchandise for the store. She’s attended auctions regularly throughout her life, and considers herself an avid collector of “funky junk. “I used to go years ago with

At that time, I didn’t understand why I did it, but it was good spending time with him, she said. “Now everyone says I’m the go-to junk girl, but I’m not sure how I feel about that. Holly said she’s thoroughly enjoyed traveling the Midwest “picking items to put in her store. Many antiques fill the three rooms inside Chapin Station, but those knickknacks aren’t the only items that Holly has to offer. Certain custom arrangements like metal lettering cutouts have been extremely popular since the business opened during the fall. “It really depends on the crowd, Holly said. “One week we’ll sell a lot of something, then the next time it’ll be something else. Holly’s no stranger to running a small business. She previously owned Little Bit Country in Sheffield prior to starting a job at Sukup Manufacturing. She said she enjoyed the challenge of opening up a new store, even though some might think she’s a little crazy doing so in Chapin. “It’s been amazing. I advertise all over, and we get people in here from bordering states. If someone’s home to visit family or something, a lot of them will make it a point to come in and

Holly said she’s enjoyed improving one rundown property in town but has shifted her attention to another eyesore. She said she and Randy would like to purchase the old church and

turn it into a community center for local residents. “Everyone says I’m crazy here in Chapin for wanting to fix up the church. They say, ‘That thing’s falling apart!’ And I say, ‘Well, so was this!’ she said. “So much of the small towns are just getting torn down, but I think it’s important to preserve. Meservey City council settles dispute over building violations By Nick Pedley The Meservey City Council received a bit of good news at their meeting Dec. 9 regarding an issue that had troubled the group for quite some time. Mayor Richard Miller reported that the city’s legal battle with Nicholas Henning over building violations had finally come to an end. Henning agreed during pre-trial negotiations to adhere to the city’s demands that he alter portions of his property to bring it inline with code. Miller said after the meeting that the agreement was a welcomed end

to a drawn-out fight. “I can’t even tell you, it’s been a long time, he said. As part of the settlement, Henning agreed to move a rock in his front yard back and remove a picket fence in the front, back and north corner of his property. Additionally, he agreed to pay a $700 fine to the city in increments of $100 per month. The agreement was reached out of court, and a motion to accept the terms was passed unanimously by the council. “He had a rock on the sidewalk that needed to get moved

back, explained Miller. “The fence that got put up – distancewise it was good. But when you went down the alley you couldn’t see – it was a vision thing. After the council accepted the terms of the agreement, Miller suggested the city update current ordinances to clarify side and rear lot lines. Additionally, Miller felt the city needed to be clearer about what material citizens can use to build a fence, and what they cannot. The council agreed to move forward with wording changes, which will be

made after Miller and City Clerk Dixie Revland research the matter further. “It’s stemming from the other issue [with Henning], said Miller. “It needs to be a little more clearer so we don’t have to have anymore discussion on it. The council also accepted a financial assistance request from the local William J. Schmale American Legion Post #171. The Legion had asked the city to provided a monthly contribution to assist with the utility bill for the first six months of 2014. The council OK’d the request, which

will total $100 per month. “The small town American Legions like ours keep getting smaller with no new members, said Miller. “It’s a matter of helping them out or closing the building. In other business, the council requested the city clerk prepare an updated ordinance to the codebook that reflects the referendum passed in the November general election. The referendum changed the number of library board members from seven to five, and will be approved at a later meeting.

Local author publishes book detailing history of area parochial schools By Nick Pedley Mason City author and Dougherty native John Cunningham has published yet another book chronicling a portion of the area’s history. Cunningham recently released, “Roots and Connections to Newman Catholic School System: A History of Cerro Gordo County Catholic Schools. The book details the timeline that led to the opening of Newman Catholic in 1961 and also provides a history of the many local parochial schools prior to its creation. “The book has a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Every time you open it you’ll find something new, Cunningham said. Cunningham began the book two years ago and wrapped up work in October. He said the intended purpose was to preserve the rich history and heritage of the area’s parochial school system, and felt it would be a worthwhile keepsake for the many people who were educated in the institutions over the years.

“I am old enough and thankful to be able to share an education system and its many experiences of the school in operation in past years and today, Cunningham wrote in a release. “These schools provided a good education system that also taught us faith and values. Cunningham explained each chapter in the book covers the history of different local parochial schools: St. Patrick’s at Dougherty; Holy Ghost Academy and Sacred Heart in Rockwell; St. Francis Academy and St. Joseph’s in Mason City; Holy Family in Mason City and Sacred Heart in Manly. Cunningham, who grew up on a farm near Dougherty, was no stranger to the past parochial schools that graced nearly every community throughout the area. “I graduated from St. Patrick’s in Dougherty, so I experienced a lot of this history myself, he said, adding he spent a lot of time scanning archives and other resources for the book’s content. “I’ve worked in libraries, and I know a little about research.

“Roots and Connections allocates a decent portion of it’s content to Newman Catholic itself, Cunningham said. Numerous local parishes from Mason City, Clear Lake, Manly, Plymouth, Rockwell, Cartersville, Swaledale, Hampton, Dumont and Geneva all helped contribute to Newman’s founding, which Cunningham felt connected the book to nearly every community throughout the immediate area. Cunningham said the book contains many historic photos and is a relatively quick read. Cost is $30 per copy, and it’s available at Book World, The Den or by contacting the author personally at his home via telephone. “Roots and Connections is Cunningham’s seventh published book since 2000. He enjoys music, gardening and riding bicycle in addition to his history hobby. “I’m always working on something – I keep busy, he said.

County 4-H Teen Council donates toys to the needy The Cerro Gordo County 4-H Teen Council found out that serving the community can be a fun experience in itself. The 4-H Teen Council spent Wednesday night, Dec. 11, purchasing Toys for Tots at Mills Fleet Farm in Mason City. The group raised money and was able to spend almost $400 and donate six large bags of toys to families in need for the holiday. The 4-H Teen council was careful to make sure they gathered a variety of toys for all ages and genders. Our 4-H Teen Council is made up of 12 members in 10th-12th grades from surrounding schools who work on various projects throughout the year. These projects can range from promotion and leadership to community service and fundraising. This year our council has done a great job of serving others and providing leadership. Members had a great time selecting the toys to purchase knowing they would be contributing to a merry Christmas for many youngsters. Larry "Tweet" Stadtlander was honored for 24 years of service to the Thornton City Council on Dec. 9. Stadtlander's first term began on Jan. 1, 1990, and his final term will expire on Dec. 31. Stadtlander choose not to seek a seventh term in November's election. (Submitted photo courtesty of Thornton City Clerk Michelle Duff)

Every family has their own holiday traditions. Some travel to visit relatives, some stay home and some do nothing at all. It depends on your preferences, and I’ve started to notice a shift in the way even my own family celebrates Christmas each year. I’d say I grew up adhering to relatively standard holiday traditions. Each year I’d visit Santa Claus at the Town Hall; I’d recite one or two lines in the pageant at church; and I enjoyed tearing open presents on Christmas morning. It was as status quo as any other kid growing up in the Midwest, I imagine. My family had their own special holiday traditions as well. We’d head over to my grandparents on Dec. 24 for Christmas on my mom’s side, then we’d go to Christmas on my dad’s side the next night. Sandwiched in between was Christmas at our own house. We’d open presents, enjoy an omelet brunch around 10:30 a.m. and sip mimosas throughout the morning (sparkling grape juice and OJ for me and my sister). However, things gradually started to change over the years. We no longer had a large celebration at my grandparents’ house each Christmas Eve, as my cousins began starting their own families with their own traditions. Gradually, I lost interest in Santa and quit buying the spiel around age 9. To top it all off, my parents opted to forego the annual trip to the tree farm in favor of an artificial one, which never quite sat well with my sister and I. It seemed Christmas and its tradi-

December gives us a chance to close the books on 2013. As I look back on the past year and review what the Legislature was able to come together and accomplish, I am pleased about the strong bi-partisan work that was done to strengthen middle class. Plenty of attention is given to big pieces of legislation, but there are less talked about initiatives that have a significant impact on our state. Even if they do not grab headlines, these things contribute to our efforts to increase opportunities for Iowans. This year we focused on empowering the next generation of Iowans by investing in education. We enabled the ability to create entrepreneurial education accounts so that students can develop skills related to starting and running a business. We fought to keep college education accessible by freezing tuition at our state universities. That is something that had not happened in decades. We also had a number of items that should help ensure there are opportunities for young Iowans to stay here. The beginning farmer program was expanded to help the next generation continue the legacy of agricultural leadership in Iowa. A targeted small business program will make microloans available to the small businesses that are the backbone of our communities and engines of growth. To increase opportunities for today’s workers, we must address the

skills gap. This year we provided over $10 million for new initiatives that offer education and training for Iowa’s workers. This investment will help Iowans get the training they need to access new careers. The more progress we make in developing a skilled workforce, the more we will enable job growth and highpaying careers. Too often I hear from a company who wants to hire but is having trouble finding qualified workers to fill the job. When the problem becomes more serious, a business owner can feel like they need to move the jobs out of the state. We need to make sure that does not happen. Investing in better-educated graduates and better-trained adults is a smart way to let everyone know that Iowa is committed to providing the best workforce in the country. When we do that, opportunities in communities large and small will abound. Those opportunities are critical to strengthening our middle class and must always be a focus for us in the Legislature. I think we have made progress in 2013, and we need to build on that in 2014. This holiday season, be safe, stay warm and have a Merry Christmas! I appreciate hearing from you. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and feedback at 515-281-4618 or Linda.Upmeyer@ legis.iowa.gov.

tions had lost some of their glimmer, and the holiday fell into somewhat of a lull for me for a brief while. I just simply lost track of what made the season so special, but all that’s turned around. I credit nobody other than my niece and nephew for my turnaround. These two youngsters have reinvigorated a sense of childhood amusement about Christmas within me, and it’s extended to nearly every facet of the holiday in recent years. First and foremost, Santa Claus is very real once again. My nephew was quick to tell me last year that he needed to be nice to his little sister or else he wouldn’t get any presents. His younger sister was a little less versed in Christmastime lore, but she knew right away who packed all the unwrapped presents underneath the tree last Christmas Eve. “Santa! she shrieked when I asked her who brought her a Minnie Mouse toy. It’s simply just fun watching a young child get so excited over Christmas. I really look forward to gift-opening time, but not for my own selfish purposes. Seeing my niece and nephew rip into presents brings back my own visceral memo-

West Fork board hears site visit review; Corn Bowl update By Nick Pedley West Fork Superintendent Darrin Strike reported that the school district received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the Department of Education following their visit earlier this month. Strike presented the findings to the board of education at their meeting Monday in Rockwell. The site visit, which is mandated for each Iowa school district every five years, provides state officials with an update on a school’s programming and progress while simulaneously shedding light on areas that need improvement. Overall, Strike said officials were impressed. “In a nutshell, they thought that we had a lot of nice things in place, he said. Strike explained the findings from the Department of Educa-

tion were just a preliminary report, and the final statement would come within the next few months. While most of it was highlighted by positive remarks, Strike explained the report came with a few suggestions. The district got docked for a lack of fencing around the playgrounds, which will be a relatively easy fix. Strike said the district will have to completely surround the playgrounds to come into compliance. Additionally, the report suggested the district could improve its special education program by monitoring student progress better. Officials felt the district could do a better job of goal-setting for the students, and they also suggested special education teachers spend more time in an instructional role with students. “That’s something we’re dealing with from an administrative level,

and we’re trying to figure out if we have the right structure in place to accomplish that, Strike said. Strike explained the district will have to submit a corrective action plan and put it in place by next fall to fix the issues. “I think the Department of Education is right on target with this, he said. “Our data is showing that what we’re using might not be 100 percent effective. There were areas to improve upon, but the board was content with report’s findings. Principal Randy Bushbaum said it was one of the most positive site visits he’s been involved with during his career. “Most of the things they were recommending were for things we were already doing. You know, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing!’ Like a pat on the back, said Bushbaum.

ries of tearing up wrapping paper as a child. Whether it was a Power Ranger or Play Dough set, I couldn’t wait to see what was next. Now, I can’t wait to see what they get next. Finally, these two kids got me thinking about the real reason for the season. My nephew was in his first pageant last year and he reminded me on Christmas Eve that it was Jesus’ birthday tomorrow. He couldn’t quite get through his short line at the play that night, but I think he might this year. Another year older, another year braver. Christmas has sort of reverted back its glory days of my youth now that I think about it. My sister and brother-in-law bought my grandparents’ house, and we restarted the tradition of hosting a Christmas Eve get together there. We go to the Christmas pageant, and Santa once again graces us with his presence, even though it’s not for me anymore. The tree is still fake, but I guess you’ve got to pick your battles. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas surrounded by the ones you love. It’s a special time of the year, and I hope all of you appreciate the time spent with family and friends.

In addition to the site visit report, Strike updated the board on athletic conference discussion. He said the Corn Bowl Conference sent letters to area schools inviting them to join the league, but there was no interest. Strike said there was talk about combining the Corn Bowl, North Iowa and North Central conferences and breaking the “super-conference down into different levels. However, all discussion was speculative at this point. “The biggest thing on this is that there’s a lot up in the air, said Strike. “Keep in mind, there’s a lot going on. Strike said another meeting is scheduled for Jan. 9 to debate the issue further.

No. 10 North Butler hands No. 13 West Fork girls first loss of season, 60-48 By Kristi Nixon Right after entering the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union rankings, West Fork (No. 13) was dealt its first loss of the girls basketball season by No. 10 North Butler on Friday, Dec. 13.

Kenzie Siemens, who was scoreless in the first half, broke out in the second to lead all scorers with 18 points for the Bearcats (4-1, 2-0) in their 60-48 win over the Warhawks in Corn Bowl Conference action. Channing Wunsch added 15 and

Haley Landers 10 for the visitors, who trailed 26-21 at halftime only to rally. Although the Bearcats were out-rebounded by the Warhawks 3231, they were balanced with six for Wunsch and five apiece for Marisa Speedy, Emily Dolan and Siemens.

West Fork’s Courtney Larson had a team-high 11 points, added five assists, four rebounds and a steal for the Warhawks before fouling out. Sydney Shreckengost also fouled out, but scored nine, including 5-of8 from the free throw line. NB vs WF to page 5

West Fork in control: Warhawks fly by West Hancock at a frantic pace By Kristi Nixon Everything about sixth-ranked (Class 2A) West Fork’s 84-62 boys basketball win over West Hancock indicated that it was in complete control. But to witness it, the game had moments where both were moving at a frenetic pace that were absolutely dizzying. The Eagles jacked up 29 threepointers, hitting 10 of them to try to keep the pace with an extremely fast offense that is the Warhawks. The recipient of that fast pace was 6-foot-5 senior forward Sam Amsbaugh. “They stop whoever they are going to guard,” Amsbaugh said. “With Hunter (Myers) and Spencer (Halloran) who both take it to the hole and shoot it well. Drew (Engebretson) is an outstanding shooter, and (Evan) Sprung is a great post presence, too. They chose to guard them tonight and those guys made good passes to me.” Amsbaugh scored 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line with a pair of college recruiters watching. And he feels like he and his teammates are in mid-season form just two games into the season. “Most definitely, yeah,” Amsbaugh said. “Last year was our first year with a new coach and a new system and everything. Now we have a year under our belt, knowing the offense. We’re three months ahead of where we were in practice from last year and that has helped that much.” After taking a 33-9 first quarter lead, three Warhawks picked up their second fouls (Engebretson, Myers and Halloran) early on and West Hancock picked up the pace, hitting a couple of threes to outscore West Fork 20-6 before half. “Anytime you play a team that is known for driving to the basket, trying to get to the free throw line and people hitting threes can be dangerous,” West Fork coach Frank Schnoes said. “There was a span in the game there they started hitting a few threes and you can get yourself back into a ballgame pretty quick. “But I was happy with the way we responded in the second half. We have to go through that, otherwise down the road if it doesn’t happen then all of a sudden you’re in the tournament and you don’t know how to respond.” Schnoes said he was happy with the team’s start and pleased to see several on his bench on the floor when the game still had meaning. “Coach (Brian) Peterson’s club did a nice job of adjusting and dropping that full court off and working their way back into the game a little bit,” Schnoes said. “They are a good, young team, so I think they are go-

ing to give some teams some grief in their conference this year.” Halloran finished with 17 points, Evan Sprung added 10 and Myers dished out seven assists in the convincing victory. But the Eagles kept dropping threes to fire up their crowd, but the closest they came to West Fork in the second half was a 10-point deficit at 51-41 with 3 minutes, 43 seconds to go in the third quarter. And the foul situation kept mounting for both teams. They combined for 34 fouls (17 apiece) and one Eagle fouled out. “They would make a three, you know, but we were always up 1525,” Amsbaugh said. “We knew we had to take care of business and we got it. “It definitely got a little chippy there, but we just had to play through

that stuff and play smart.” And Amsbaugh kept out of the fray by simply scoring, impressing coaches from Waldorf and Iowa Wesleyan Colleges who both talked to him after the game. He added six assists. “He’s been playing pretty well,” Schnoes said. “He’s really not taken time off all year, playing some AAU ball, and he works at his game and the kids do a nice job of finding him and he also does a nice job of seeing the other kids and he’s unselfish, even though he scored a lot tonight. “Kids are finding him at the right place at the right time and it’s nice for him to be that consistent. He just has a knack of getting the ball in the basket in and around the low post area. He’s been trying to work on his outside game and hit some outside shots.”

No doubt:

West Fork girls roll by West Hancock By Kristi Nixon After yielding the opening basket, West Fork’s girls basketball team scored 15 unanswered and left no one wondering the outcome of its first home contest against West Hancock, 70-31, on Monday, Dec. 9. The Warhawks were aggressive early and often in building a 35-point lead mid-way through the third quarter to start a continuous clock. West Fork came up with 15 steals and forced the Eagles into countless turnovers with its pressure, but also committed 21 fouls to send them to the free throw line. “We still have to do a better job of being smart,” West Fork coach Rodney Huber said. “Not fouling so much, being in better position. Sometimes when you get on them so fast, you have a tendency to pick on them and reach for the ball and that’s something we’re trying to get away from. “We’re going to play aggressive and we’re going to get out and that type of stuff.” A true team effort, two players finished in double figures with Lindsey Peterson tallying a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Sydney Shreckengost added 11 points and four steals. Courtney Larson and Madison Shreckengost each posted nine points with Larson pulling down six boards, handing out four assists and coming up with four more steals. It was an overall good night for junior starter Mickee Guritz, who scored eight, had two rebounds, an assist, steal and two blocks. “Our plan is to run-and-gun real fast, just keep moving, keep the team going so we don’t slow down and keep our adrenaline,” Guritz said. “(Coach) just warned us to keep our

hands off and move our feet a little bit more and don’t reach.” Huber was hesitant to say whether it was his team’s best performance in the early going, preparing his team for its biggest test of the season thus far against conference rival North Butler on Friday. “It’s hard to say,” Huber said. “I thought the first half wasn’t (our best). The second half, we played better. Even if it’s an opponent we beat up on, I’m still looking at things to get better in a game. That’s our mantra right now. “These first four games, coming into North Butler, we have to be better.” Guritz added that she felt the team looked good going up against the Bearcats. “I’m actually feeling really good,” Guritz said. “I know they’ve had some trouble, we’re just hoping whatever we do can get us to the win.” West Fork 70, West Hancock 31 West Fork (2-0, 0-0) – Taylor Logan 0-2 6-8 6; Courtney Larson 4-7 1-3 9; Cailey Weaver 0-0 2-2; Mickee Guritz 3-8 2-2 8; Kelsey Nierengarten 0-1 1-4 1; Madison Shreckengost 3-5 0-0 9; Lindsey Peterson 5-7 3-6 13; Anne Jorgensen 2-5 2-4 6; Sydney Shreckengost 5-10 1-5 11; Kaitlyn Liekweg 2-4 0-0 5; Kalynn Washington 0-0 0-0 0. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ¿ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ¿gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Words cannot express the gratitude we have for the volunteer firefighters of Latimer, Sheffield, Thornton, Coulter, Meservey, Swaledale, the emergency response team of West Franklin EMS & Franklin General Ambulance. They did an excellent job in getting our fire contained and saving our surrounding buildings. I am sure all of these volunteers would rather have been doing something else besides working with water in extremely cold conditions but we are so very thankful that they came to our aid. You have our deepest respect. We would also like to thank you family members, friends, and neighbors for their support, helping with food and warm drinks. Your hearts are huge and we are happy that we have a small place in each of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped out on that cold Saturday morning fire. ~Mark & Sue Rother ~Ryan, Becky Rother & family ~Tony, Jessica Rother & family
