Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in Buffalo Center, Lakota, Britt, Lake Mills and Bricelyn will kick off its 100 year anniversary at the beginning of 2014. Originally founded in 1914, the bank has grown and expanded into the five branches it is today. On May 16, 1914, J.J. McGuire, a member of the McGuire Lumber Co. family, along with F.L. Sharon, H.D. Feldick, C.J. Anderson, and E.B. Aukes, organized and incorporated the Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in Buffalo Center. The bank building was located at 125 North Main Street – the same address that had been occupied by several other banks in the town’s early days. During the 1920s and 1930s, The Great Depression caused many banks in Iowa to fail. First National Bank in Buffalo Center was one that did not survive. Farmers Trust & Savings Bank purchased their bank building, and the business was moved across the street to 201 Main Street in 1935. That same year, both banks in Lakota also failed, leaving the community without a bank. Farmers Trust & Savings Bank then opened an office there. Elso E. Sapp purchased controlling interest of the bank in the 1930s. After 53 years of personal involvement in the bank, he sold controlling interest to W.D. Ley in 1967. Construction of a new building in Buffalo Center was completed in the spring of 1971 at 101 North Main Street, where the home office is currently located.
In February 1992, the bank purchased the Home Federal Savings & Loan office in Britt from the regulators. It was the first expansion of the bank in 58 years. The bank received approval in March 1998 to open a bank office in Lake Mills. A temporary loan production office was opened in October 1998, while the bank building was being constructed. The new bank opened in February 1999. In February 2002, the bank purchased the Gateway Savings Bank office in Lake Mills and merged it with its existing office. In April 2012, the bank purchased the State Bank of Bricelyn, MN. The bank had been owned by the Flo family for over 100 years. W.D. Ley passed away in December 2000, and his shares were held in his Estate until June 2004, when they were sold, along with other minority shares, to the employees of the bank. The employees (Employee

Throughout its history, the bank has existed to provide credit, quality financial products, and outstanding service to the communities in which it served. To this day, FTSB remains primarily an agricultural bank in rural north central Iowa and south central Minnesota and prides itself on its heritage. American Legion Estate planning help available Auxiliary
ISU Extension and Outreach in Winnebago County will offer an estate planning workshop on January 31, 2014, at the Titonka Savings Bank in Forest City. Talking about estate planning is often difficult, and implementing an estate plan can be even harder. Farmers are unique in that there is not a distinct moment where they just walk out the door to retirement as someone in a regular wage earning job might do. There are options they can consider, such as phasing out or transitioning to another generation, and this program helps them plan for that. The “Evaluating Your Estate Plan workshop will answer estate planning questions and help prepare you for future farm transitions and estate planning. The program applies to everyone – town and country, families, couples and individuals – according to Melissa O’Rourke, Iowa State University Extension Farm Agribusi-
ness Management Specialist, who is one of the speakers at the event. Kelvin Leibold, Iowa State University Extension Farm Agribusiness Management Specialist, will be the other featured speaker at the workshop. The workshop will discuss the language of estate planning, gift, estate, inheritance taxes, calculating retirement costs, and many other areas vital to creating a good estate plan. If you are confused on how to build a plan for transferring farm assets or unsure what options are best for your farm operation and family, you should attend this workshop. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 31, and advance registration is required. To register, call the Winnebago County Extension Office at 641-584-2261. There is a fee for registration. Titonka Savings Bank in Forest City is located at 101 Hwy 69.

Community Hymnsing celebrates the season The North Iowa Community Hymnsings are celebrating the winter and Christmas seasons with faith and inspiration on Sunday, Dec. 29. The group will gather that day at the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center at 7:00 p.m. The hymnsings are a north Iowa tradition and gather men and women, boys and girls from several area churches. The congregations who sponsor the hymnsings are an ecumenical mix of First Baptist, First Congregational and First Reformed Churches of Buffalo Center, in addition to Ramsey Reformed of rural Titonka and First Presbyterian of Lakota. Pastor Donna Steven is the song leader for this event, assisted by laity and clergy of the participating churches. Pastor Donna will be retiring at the first of the year, so this will be her last time sharing with everyone as the hymnsing leader. A new coordinator has
been named, and some changes are ahead in the future for the hymnsings. The community hymnsings continue a rotation through the participating churches. Each church contributes to the mix with someone from their congregations to sing or play. The host churches always provide a “Community Special, and this month’s special is Judy Junkermeier. Pastor Brad DeVries of the First Congregational Church will be sharing a brief devotional time. An offering will be received on this Sunday for the North Iowa Food for Families food pantry. The group always concludes the evening of singing with a fellowship time to be held in the church basement. The community at large is cordially invited to share this hour with the sponsoring churches. The next hymnsing is scheduled for February 23.

Commercial Manure Applicator training scheduled for Winnebago County The Winnebago County Extension Office will host a training program for Commercial Manure Applicators on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 from 9 a.m. to noon. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will conduct the required three-hour training workshop at that time. There is no fee to attend the workshop, but commercial applicators must register by Dec. 30 by contacting the Extension Office at 641-5842261. Commercial manure applicators needing to recertify and those wanting to certify for the first time should attend. The workshop will provide the required three hours of annual training and will cover applicator rules, biosecurity issues, foaming pits, and development of manure application rates, and how to read manure plans. All currently certified commercial manure applicator licenses will expire on March 1, 2014. Commercial applicators can attend training throughout the year, but if they were previously certified, they should plan to attend training and submit the forms and fees to DNR prior to March 1, 2014 to avoid paying the late fees. Certification fees for commercial manure applicators have not changed for 2014. ISU Extension and Outreach will charge a $10 fee to applicators
choosing to view the certification materials on a non-scheduled reshow day at the county office. For this reason, all applicators are encouraged to attend the workshops or to plan to view training materials on the scheduled reshow date at their local county extension office. The fee will not apply to workshops or scheduled reshow dates. Contact the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Winnebago County to determine which days are scheduled for the manure applicator certification programs. Due to scheduling conflicts, many county extension offices will no longer accept walk-in appointments to watch the training DVDs. If attending the Jan. 7 commercial manure applicator program or watching the three-hour DVD is not convenient, commercial applicators may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam. In addition to needing an appointment to take the exam, applicators must bring a pencil and photo identification, and should plan to bring a calculator. Commercial manure applicators hauling, handling or land-applying primarily dry or solid manure are encouraged to attend the dry manure applicator workshops scheduled for February 2014. Dates and locations can be found in the link below. For more information about the
commercial applicator program, contact the ISU Extension Winnebago County office at 641-584-2261 or access a list of the training locations

New wildlife area in Winnebago County The Winnebago County Conservation Board has acquired 190 acres of wildlife habitat northeast of Forest City, thanks to cooperation from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Iowa DNR, and the Winnebago/Hancock Chapter of Pheasants Forever The new Lenze-McCoy Wildlife Area, named for Chuck Lenze and Dr. Dave McCoy, is located in section 22 of Mt. Valley Township, three miles east and 1.5 miles north of Forest City on 210th Avenue. The acquisition was finalized this past summer, and the area is now open to the public for hunting, trapping, bird watching and other compatible uses. The acquisition began early in 2011, when Bruce Mountain, formerly of the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, contacted the WCCB about the possibility of partnering together to acquire wildlife habitat in Winnebago County. Mountain was the executor of the Ted Fariss Estate, a fund which was to be used to acquire wildlife habitat. Once it was determined that the WCCB would be interested in a partnership, Mountain directed a portion of the estate’s funds to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The INHF then used that money to partner with the Iowa DNR to secure a Prairie Lakes 6 North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant. The INHF was then able to purchase the property in 2012, until the WCCB could secure financing of its
own. Later that year, the Winnebago/ Hancock Pheasants Forever Chapter contributed funds to the WCCB for the project, and, in 2013, $229,000 of the Prairie Lakes 6 grant was awarded to the WCCB for the purchase. No county tax dollars were used for the acquisition. This past summer, the acquisition was completed, and the area became the property of the WCCB. All but 10 acres of the LenzeMcCoy property had already been enrolled in the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) by the previous owners – the Monson and Kingland families. To qualify for WRP, the property had to contain a high percentage of hydric soils and have restorable wetlands present. Wetlands are among the most diverse habitats known, providing food and shelter to countless species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. They are also important for maintaining or improving water quality within a watershed. The new area consists of wetlands, restored prairie uplands and scattered timber areas containing oak, hickory, poplar and walnut trees. Many different wildlife species can be found on the area, including deer, turkey, waterfowl, pheasants, rabbits and squirrels. For more information about the new Lenze-McCoy Wildlife Area, contact WCCB Director Robert Schwartz at 641-565-3390 or at rschwartz@winnebagoccb.com

Bison have mixed results before break The North Iowa Bison added a win and a loss in their final two basketball games before the Christmas break. The boys traveled to Clarion on Saturday, Dec. 14, where they held an early lead over Clarion-Goldfield to pick up a 48-36 win in non-conference play. Tate Corporon posted a gamehigh 25 points, followed by Derek Yegge with seven and Trevor Aukes with six. Corporon and Dylan Voortmann each totaled five rebounds, Corporon had six blocks, and Yegge had four steals. “One good thing about a game on Saturday after a Friday loss is that you don’t have the whole weekend to dwell on it, said Bison Head Coach Chad Hinders, referring to his team’s loss to Forest City the night before. “Our focus turned to Clarion Goldfield. We did not know a lot about the Cowboys because their lineup changed totally from last year, too.
“Fortunately, we were able to run through our offense and get a lot of good looks in the paint, said Hinders. “This allowed us to build a ten point cushion after the first period. The Cowboys exclusively played man-to-man defense, and we were able to put in a few of our old back cut plays that got Tate open for a lob dunk and Derek an easy put in. This put us up 15, and also this made us relax a bit, and they were able to make a run at us to end the half. The Bison led 27-18 at the break. “From there, it was just a game management exercise, feed the ball inside to Tate and make free throws, said Hinders. “Tonight we were able to get the ball inside to Tate, and he was strong with the ball and finished strong to the goal. Also, it was a total team defensive effort. Anytime you can hold an opponent to below 40 points is a plus. It takes the pressure off of the offense and lets us dictate what we need to do to close out the
Wrestlers notch two wins at home The Forest City Indians picked up a pair of victories last Tuesday night, Dec. 17 in Forest City, as they hosted Central Springs and GarnerHayfield Ventura. The Indians faced the Central Springs Panthers for their first dual of the evening, which came down to the final pairing. Beau Sorenson defeated Kegen Fingalsen 6-4 in a sudden victory at 160 pounds to secure the win for the Indians, 39-34. Forest City won all but three of their matches with the GHV Cardinals to win their second dual of the night, 57-18. game. North Iowa 16 11 11 10 48 Clarion 6 12 10 8 36 The Bison came up short in their last match before the break, as they fell 59-55 in a close contest at Newman Catholic on Tuesday, Dec. 17. “Tonight, we really clicked offensively in the early stages of the game, said Hinders. “We were getting good ball movement on the perimeter, and the posts were flashing to open areas. It was not the same story on defense, as Newman Catholic was also able to get open looks
and really beat us to the ball. When we did force missed shots, they were able to get the offensive rebound and score off of them. “The second and third quarters were our downfall, as we were outscored 26-20 in those periods, said Hinders. “Similar to Lake Mills, we had a run that put us ahead by one, but it just seems like we expend so much to get back to even that we don’t have the little extra to keep with it. Newman then went on a little run to get up by seven. We gave a valiant effort to the end, but it just

of our passes are just too long, or we are trying to force it in between too many hands. We have flaws, but these are correctable. Ladies outlast Forest City The Lady Bison hosted their first conference match of the basketball season on Friday, Dec. 13, when they defeated the Forest City Indians 47-42 after a big first half. “Games with Forest City are usually very exciting, and this game had plenty of excitement, said Lady Bison Head Coach Rob Riedinger.
“We had an outstanding first half of play, with Krista leading the way as we built a 35-18 halftime lead. “Things began to unravel in the third quarter, as we struggled to handle Forest City’s pressure and thus allowed them to get back into the game. I was pleased with our resolve and fight as the girl’s worked very
hard in the final minutes to preserve this victory, said Riedinger. North Iowa had three scorers in the double figures, including Paige Hassebroek with 14 points, Krista Hovland 13 and Rebecca Murray 10. Hovland led in rebounds with 11, followed by Murray with eight and Hassebroek with six.
Beau Sorenson defeated Kegen Fingalsen of Central Springs in a sudden victory to secure a win for the Indians last Tuesday night.
Krista Hovland goes up for two points in the Lady Bison’s win over Forest City on Friday, Dec. 13 in Buffalo Center.

Austin Paden and Corporon each had four rebounds. Voortmann had four assists and three steals, and Corporon had three blocks. “We are doing a lot of things correctly, but we need to take better care of the basketball and understand game management, added Coach Hinders. “We are trying to stress value each possession. “Rachel [Boekelman] had her best defensive game to date, and Kayla [Stelter] played outstanding in the final minutes to help preserve this win, said Riedinger. “With all that said, poor free throw shooting in the final quarter made this game far more exciting than necessary.
