Family Gives in the Spirit of the Season The Steve and Jo Wiley family once again will be hosting a free Christmas dinner on December 25, 2013 at the McVay Family Center in New Sharon. Sixteen years ago, local pharmacist (Wiley Pharmacy) at the time, Steve Wiley and his wife, Jo, began the tradition as a ‘thank you’ to their customers and the community. Since then, their entire family, which has grown, gives of their time to help, just in the spirit of the season. The Wileys
welcome anyone to their Christmas dinner but especially if you are home alone or have no family near during the holidays. Reservations are requested and recommended but not needed, please call Jo at 641-660-0928 if you plan to attend. The Wiley’s expressed, “Please spread the word and DON’T BE HOME ALONE ON CHRISTMAS!”.

2014 Community Investment Grant applications available now
The United Way of Mahaska County’s Community Investment Grant applications are now available at unitedwaymahaksa.org. It’s the time of year where donor dollars are put into action at organizations throughout Mahaska County. In the past, the United Way of Mahaska County has received around $100,000 more in request than can be funded so deciding where donor dollars go can be difficult. In January, a group of community members will come together to make the tough decisions. Applicants for funding must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Mahaska County. No funding will be allocated to programs outside of our county. Applications are due to the United Way of Mahaska County office by Monday, January 6, 2014 at noon. No late submissions will be accepted. If you have more than one program requesting funding please complete separate applications for each program. For more information on the grant process, or to be a part of the Community Investment Team, please contact Executive Director Amy Langdon at 641.673.6043 or unitedway@mahaska.org.

The search for a man who fell through the ice on Lake Pondersoa near Montezuma resumed Monday, Dec. 16 as another team of divers joined in the effort. According to Chris Widmer, chief, Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department, David Allen Hartke, 57, Grundy Center, Iowa, reportedly fell through a weak spot in the ice on Lake Ponderosa while ice fishing Saturday evening, Dec. 14. The Midwest Regional Dive Team was called in Monday and they will search until all possible resources are exhausted, Widmer said. The third dive team arrived about noon on Monday, Dec. 16. According to J.R. Shearer, incident commander and assistant chief for the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department, the department was called to Lake Ponderosa about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a man who had fallen through the ice. Shearer said that Hartke had supposedly been ice fishing with a friend and both were using UTV Rangers on the ice, which was still thin in places. “We responded and immediately called in the Grinnell and New Sharon fire departments for ice rescue support,” Shearer said. “After our first initial rescue attempt, we called in the dive team,” Shearer said. Initially, the Johnson County Metro Dive Team arrived at 10 p.m. Saturday evening and spent the evening searching in the water for the missing person. On Sunday, nearly 30 or more rescue workers from the area, including the Montezuma, Malcom and New Sharon fire departments, were on scene assisting the divers from Johnson County and the Central Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue team. All three diving teams consist of volunteers with some who serve as fire fighters and police officers in their respective communities. The search consisted of several groups of divers in teams of two going underwater for periods of 15 minutes because of the cold water temperatures. One team would leave the water to get warmed up while another team would take over. “They made a search of about 15 to 20 feet around the vehicle,” Shearer said. Conditions, he said, were very cold while sight was very limited. The rescue teams were also using an underwater camera lowered through holes dug by an ice auger to help in the search. It was estimated by the divers that the ice was only two-inches thick at the place the subject fell through the ice – the ice was thicker a few feet further on. According to officials, the area where Hartke fell through was open water a couple weeks ago.
Above: Four months after the car accident, Paula Pitman received her promised hug from Molly Urfer, who is recovering from a broken neck.
‘A Real Life Angel’
Pitman’s quick response saves life in tragic accident “I remember her eyes, those beautiful brown eyes,” said Molly Urfer, recalling the car accident that ultimately claimed her husband’s life. Unable to move her neck without pain, Urfer sat still while a mysterious woman with a soothing voice held her neck in place until the ambulance arrived. It would be weeks until Urfer met her real life angel. The auto accident happened late in the afternoon on May 21, 2013. Long-time residents of Grinnell, Iowa, Urfer and her husband, Jim, were headed home from a trip to Des Moines. They had exited Interstate 80 and were turning left into town when their minivan was struck by a vehicle traveling south on Highway 146. “The impact of the accident rendered me unconscious. When I came to, we were in a ditch. I turned to see how my husband was. That’s when I felt a sharp pain in my neck,” said Urfer. Agitated and in pain, she tried to open the door. Meanwhile, Grinnell Mutual Claims Director Paula Pitman had wrapped up work at the office, located less than a mile south of the Interstate 80/Highway 146 interchange. She had just started her drive home when she noticed two cars in the ditch. Cars were stopping but no one was getting out to help. “I could see the mini van had been t-boned on the driver’s side. I just felt like I needed to stop,” said Pitman. “I’m not a nurse or paramedic, but I thought I could at least comfort them until medical personnel arrived.” As soon as she parked her car, Pitman ran to the vehicles to check on their passengers. The driver of the
car was shaken but okay. She got to the Urfer’s minivan and found them alert but in pain. “I asked them their names, where they hurt, and told them to sit still,” said Pitman. “Molly kept reaching to her neck so I held her neck in place with one hand and held her hand with the other. Somewhere I had learned that if a person complained of neck pain that you need to hold them still. I just kept talking to them, asking questions, and reassuring them that help was coming.” After the paramedics arrived, the Urfers were taken to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where Jim later succumbed to injuries received in the accident. Molly had suffered a break to her second vertebrae during the accident and spent several weeks recovering in the hospital. She still continues physical therapy but is doing well. The Urfers were two months away from celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary at the time of the accident. “I know if Paula hadn’t come at just that right time, I would have continued to struggle to get out of the van or get to my husband and probably further injured my neck more in the process,” said a grateful Urfer. “The trauma nurses at the hospital told me I was very lucky. It was a clean break but had I moved, I could have joined Jim or been paralyzed from my neck down. I know she saved my life, or at least my quality of life. Thank you, Paula. You’re my real life angel.” “I’m humbled by the attention,” said Pitman. “I can’t imagine not stopping to help. It was just the right thing to do.”
Longtime residents of Grinnell and active in the community, Jim and Molly Urfer had been married nearly 54 years at the time of the car accident that ultimately claimed Jim’s life.

Special Reflections by Wilma Kaldenberg
A week or two ago I had sent a letter to Zilah Navesquez, a young lady in the Philippines. I became acquainted with her (by mail) about twelve years ago when she had received a “love package” that I had packed for a “mission box,” in the Lynnville Friends Church.I had included my name and address and she wrote a “thank you” letter. I had continued corresponding with her and was happy to be able to help her to attend school and be able to earn a living for her and to be of help to her family. Naturally, when I learned of the strong typhoon that had hit the Philippines a few weeks ago, I wondered if I would every hear from her again. So I sent an e-mail letter and was happy to receive a letter from her. I thought I would use it for this week’s reflections. I’m not correcting her spelling - she can probably speak and spell two languages! She begins this way.: Dear Ms. Wilma:I am very very very happy to have receive a mail from you. My family and I are OK and we haven’t experienced loss during the earthquake and the typhoon as our area was not really affected by the strong typhoon. How are you? We are always hoping and always praying for you. My mother always asks me to e-mail you every now and then so that we will know how you are doing, especially that you are living alone in your apart-
ment. I hope that you always keep yourself busy like writing on your local newspaper. We are glad to know you are living comfortably in your two-room apartment in Pella. Please know that we are living comfortable as well in our town. My family and I are O.K. and we haven’t experienced loss during the earthquake. My father is renovating our house. I shared a part from my Christmas bonus to renovate the house and they also have earnings from selling our pigs. We have a little piggery at home - currently we have a soon-to-be mother pig - she will give birth on Christmas Day or the day after. We are really hoping she will have safe delivery; then we will sell some of the piglets and raise some of them. Aside from our pet pig we already have a puppy shilpoo, a breed of shih tzu and poodle. My uncle, my mother’s brother, gave her to us. Her name is Cocoa, and she is very sweet and adorable. She always brings joy to my parents. I hope that you will keep in touch with me and I will do my best to keep in touch with you. I hope that your children will visit with you on Christmas Day. I hope I can visit you too but I know I can’t be able to do that. I am praying for you, my family too. I hope you will have a great day today and keep inspiring other people. I must close since it is almost midnight. Love, Zilah
New Sharon Library
The New Sharon library book club met on December 10 to discuss Jodi Picoult’s THE STORYTELLER. This fiction work dealt with a wide variety of topics including forgiveness for Nazi atrocities, becoming a “new person” by living a different life, and hiding our scars. The readers were amazed at Picoult’s masterful use of symbols, story-within-a story technique, and remarkable use of descriptive language. After this remarkable work of fiction, the group will read a nonfiction selection, TEARS OF THE RAIN by Ruth Ann Stelfox. Amazon’s synopsis describes a missionary experience: “ For Wayne and Ruth Ann Stelfox, the war-torn city of Monrovia, Liberia, was a drastic change from rural Alberta, Canada. But they and their five children accepted the challenge of a two-year mission assignment in West Africa and found themselves immersed in a world of starving children, extreme poverty, disease, human sacrifice, witchcraft, and violence.
In the midst of this darkness, they found joy, love, lasting friendships, and hearts open to the light of God’s love. They saw beauty in the scarred landscape around them, and the tears of heaven in the torrential African rains. As they worked to help change the lives of those around them, their own lives were changed, and the miracles they witnessed increased their awe of the God they had gone to Africa to serve. In Tears of the Rain, Ruth Ann tells the heart-wrenching story of those two years, and of the lives that were touched and changed, including her own. Ruth Ann allowed her heart to be captured by the Liberians, and she opens her heart - and theirs - to us in this stirring, true story. “ Although readers are warned about graphic details, the book promises to be eye-opening. Everyone is invited to come to the library at 1:30 on Tuesday, January 14 to discuss this story of two years in a foreign land. If you haven’t read the book, feel free to come to enjoy listening to others’ observations.

Reflections
by Wilma Kaldenberg When I was thinking this morning about a topic for this weekly column, it seemed appropriate to be writing something about Christmas, and I realized I knew very little about the day except that we celebrate it as the day of Jesus’ birth. And Jesus’ parents, Joseph and Mary, as well as shepherds and wise men are the important figures in the stories that we find in our Bibles, in the first chapters of the books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. So I decided to read about Christmas in my old, faithful World Book encyclopedias. And most of this column will be taken, verbatim, directly from the 1956 “C” volume where about four pages are given to that topic. I have to admit that I gained considerable information that I did not know and decided those who take time to read the column may have a similar experience. It seemed appropriate to write about Christmas in this week’s “Reflections,” and I’ve decided to use my 1956 encyclopedia as a source to learn some of the history of this special holiday. As you read, remember that many years have passed since this encyclopedia was published! Christmas is celebrated in all Christian countries as the birthday of Christ. The word “Christmas” comes from the early English term “Christes Masse,” which means “Christ’s Mass.” It is used only in English-speaking countries. In most of Europe, the day is known as “Christ’s Birthday.” Scandinavian countries still use the pagan name “Yule Day,” and Germany and Switzerland observe “Holy Night.” The date for Christmas in most lands is December 25. It is marked by religious services, by the exchange of gifts, and by merry-making. No one knows definitely when the Christmas festival was first celebrated. It is spoken of in the 400’s by Clement of Alexandria. Chrysostom speaks of it in the 380’s as a custom of long standing. Other dates were often celebrated as the day of the Nativity, but in the year of 354, by order of Bishop Liberius or Rome, December 25 was adopted. It was noted later that this date would fall within the rainy season of Palestine, so that the shepherds would hardly have been in the fields at night as they were when Jesus was born. The early Church Fathers probably chose December 25 because the feast of the sun, or winter solstice, was a familiar Roman feast celebratng the victory of light over darkness. This idea was easily turned from a pagan to a Christian one,
since Christians consider Christ as the light of life. The Armenians, who were the first people in the the world to set up a Christian state, celebrate Christmas Eve on January 6 by eating fried fish, lettuce, and boiled spinach. They believe that Mary ate boiled spinach the night before Christ was born. The festivities last three days with visiting and merrymaking. December 6 is the day on which the long Christmas season opens for the Austrians, Belgians, Burgarians, French, Germans, Greeks, Hungarians, Italians, Dutch and Swiss. On this date Santa Claus, also called Christ-kindl, Saint Nicholas, or Shen Koll, comes with his pack of gifts for his children, and frequently carries a supply of switches for those who have been disobediient or careless. The countries that observe December 6 for the giving of presents have Christmas Day free for feasting, carol singing, dramas, and visiting with relatives and friends to exchange Christmas greetings. The giving of presents and the use of holly, mistletoe, Yule logs, and the wassail bowl have all come to us from the days before Christitianity, but they are things which set Christmas distinctly apart from all other holidays. Without the Christmas tree and Santa Claus, the day would lose much of its meaning to families. The custom of sending Christmas cards started more than fifty years ago. In recent years many cities have adopted the custom of celebrating with community festivals. Great Christmas trees glowing with lights are set upin a central location, such as Madison Square in New York City, or the lake front in Chicago. On Christmas Eve people gather about these trees to sing the familiar hymns and carols about the birth of Christ. The custom of White Christmas has also become a common practice in many religious and social organizations. Groups gather a few days before Christmas, singing carols, and bringing baskets of canned foods, dressed chickens and turkeys, fresh vegetables, fruits and cakes, all wrapped in white paper. The baskets are piled around a Christmas tree or fireplace, and songs are sung or pageants are given. The food is then taken to poor people. I trust that my readers, like myself, have learned a bit of history telling of this special American holiday. May we all remind ourselves that this is the date celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, our wonderful Savior.

Lower Grove News Bunker Hill & Beyond by Rosemary Schmidt
Another week gone by and it was COLD in case anyone didn’t notice. On Friday Kalvin, Carrie and I went to Ottumwa shopping. It was one of the nicest days that we have experienced recently. Got most of our shopping finished and I guess it is time. Seems as if Christmas rolls around so fast and I never seem to be quite ready. The family is all coming here on Christmas day, but I do have the meal planned and making preparations to systematically get most everything done ahead of time. There is always something to do at the last minute. I must write a Christmas letter and get it sent to my friends and relatives that do not live near me. My copy machine ‘gave up living’ and so I ordered a new one on line. Received it Saturday and must get it set up tomorrow if I am going to get the letters printed. Always something to fix and to replace. Doesn’t seem like anything lasts very long, but then I forget how long we have had some of our possessions. When I buy something, I expect it to last forever. That is not how it happens now with all the technology available. Even if the product remains good, the technology changes and you need a different item. Kenny Hoksbergen called Saturday to tell me that they had traveled on Wednesday to Titonka, Iowa which is about 210 miles and is located in northern Iowa near the Minnesota line. They were going to the funeral for Gladys (Van Rheenen) Cordes at the Ramsey Reformed Church. The church had stained glass windows and was a big one out in the country about 5 miles north of Titonka. Gladys was our old Cherry Grove School teacher and this was the church that Gladys’s husband Ralph Cordes attended in his youth. Afterwards they stayed for the lunch that had been prepared by the ladies of the church. They were glad to get to visit with the family and to see Gloria Pitts (the friend of Gladys that had brought her to my house this last summer for a visit.) Her burial was in the cemetery near the church where her husband had been laid to rest. Been staying home quite a bit because of the cold weather. It is much nicer staying by the fireside. I should be getting a lot more things done in the house, but guess I procrastinate. Went to Ottumwa to Christmas shop on Friday. My chauffeur (Kalvin) drove and Carrie & I shopped. Finished my shopping list, almost. We went to Herbergers, Mennards, K-Mart, and Walmart. We got some good buys at Herbergers…so much of the clothes were on good sales. I don’t remember when ‘back in the day’ that there were mark downs before Christmas…only afterwards. Dog-gone-it, we missed Target and Kohls. Oh well, maybe we can go back after Christmas and ‘hit the sales’. We ate dinner at Riverside Restaurant. Always get a lot to eat there and it was delicious also. Did a lot of telephone ‘gabbing’ this week since I was home bound. Talked to Norma Conover, Sally
Bruinekool, Shirley Hoksbergen, Charlene De Kock, Lois Ann Van Wyk, and Pam (Jackson) Tweedy and Geneva Jansen. I did go to Pella on Thursday and went to see Donna Hanna in the Pella Hospital. She is progressing nicely with the therapy on her ankle, but was quite upset over the death of her brother, Bill Livesky from New Sharon. Stopped in to see Dennis Roozenboom also and was planning on seeing Gerald Rozenboom, but he had been allowed to go home that day. Breakfast time Saturday at Happy Joes with the bunch: Bill Van Zante, Marvin & Charlotte Rollins, Phil Vogelaar, Shorty & Marlena Wichhart, Charlene De Kock and Sally Bruinekool. Shorty treated us with Pizza and dessert pizza because it was his birthday on Sunday. Seems as if that is not quite the way it is supposed to be. Shouldn’t we be buying his Pizza? But, we did not argue, we just ate! Sunday the weather was cold, but I went to the First Baptist Church to hear the Cantata and the Children’s program. Coffee time afterwards and then on to the Family Restaurant to eat. Henrietta Veldhuizen and Minnie (Henry) Van Wyngarden were there and graciously let me set with them. Minnie used to live in Lower Grove many years ago. Those two gals are always a pleasure to visit with. ****OXYMORONS 1. Why is good if a vacuum really sucks? 2. No news last week because RL had a eye appointment in Grinnell and would need a driver home and he had not told me so our books did not coincide with each other. So I just had time to get up and get around. It pays to let the other one know of your plans for them. A sad weekend in the lives of area Montezuma. A man drowned at the Lake, ice fishing. Our granddaughter is on Fire and Rescue and they were out for hours doing all they could. Ice is a great fooler and water under neath can be spring fed. So sad. We went to Des Moines on Friday to Mennards, RL’s favorite place to be. Boring!!! And also he spends a lot of time reading and looking and I am looking for a place to sit. Jaylah wanted to sit among the Christmas lights for sale and all the junk from China. So we did while we waited and waited. We then stopped for Chinese in Newton. Jaylah loves chinese and she knows what she wants as she looks for her self. Watched the Dr.’s the other day and here is what not to eat in your food. BHT and avoid completely BHA. Whatever they are. Do not eat food with acsulfame or aceK. Beware it is not safe and Diacetyl in a butter substitute is poison. One needs to carry a big book and check all the ingredients in all foods. What a list there is. Mom canned her own every summer up to 500 qts. at least. Now days that is almost to expensive if you buy peaches or cherries or any kind of fruit. Shelly Long must can almost that much. Go Shelly!!! Gary and Sonya Briggs and Wayne and Ruth Hasley journed to places around Decorah to look at the Christmas lights over the weekend. The guys have been friends since they were in grade school. They also do a lot of fishing up there in the summer time. We took in the Legion Cat fish supper on Friday night. They serve whole catfish and it was really the

best. Potatoes, coleslaw, bun and chocolate pudding. They will serve 3 more months the second Tuesday of the month. Go down the sidewalk to the back door and whala, there is some good eating. Our granddaughter has been in the Navy 11 years and they asked her to join up with the other Veterans. She was helping serve. So we went. Did you see on the news where a new fad is to take two old sweaters and make some pants and adding the other to make the top. You have to be young and adventurous and not fat to wear them. They are called spants!!!!! sweater and pants. I knew I was not going to be wearning them for sure. Saturday evening we had a soup supper and all the trimmings at the home of our son, Brian and his family and two of our other kids, Ann and Mark. Karol had to work and so half of the family was there and so we will try and do something else near the end of the year for the other half. We do fill a house anymore. Sunday was the Christmas program at church for the kids, I visited with Marie DeBoef from New Sharon as she came to see five of her great grand children perform. There was a great crowd. In the evening we again went in town to the birthday party for our great grandson Elliott Coster who turned four on the tenth. It was held at Grandpa Rick Talbert’s. We came, Ann and Larry, Kelly VanRyswyk and her two children, Ben Fogt and two boys, Bette Talbert, Uncle Colton and Aunt Rachel and Kieren and Jaylah. House was full. Forest Home Club is Wednesday at Colleen’s. Looks like next week is full so keep safe and slow down. Haste is a waste of time and could be fatal. I hate I- 80 for that reason, they are nuts on that road. What semi can break in a pinch going 80 or more miles an hour. A car can’t either. We avoid that road when we can.

I’m also really glad to see all of the students that are busting their butts to keep good grades and excel in the sport that they’re in for the season. As a student athlete myself, we have pretty long days. I usually leave my house around 7:15 a.m. for jazz band and don’t get back until about 6:30 p.m. from basketball practice, or 9:30 p.m. on game nights. It’s not as easy as some people think. Since semester tests have been taking place this week, that just adds a little more stress to our routine. Semester tests are one of my least favorite things about the school year. I don’t enjoy the pages and pages of notes that we have for each subject. I don’t enjoy the hour and a half class periods. But it’s also not going to last forever, although it seems like it at the time. But I will thank the teachers for being reasonable when it comes to test time. They usually give us 4 days prior to the test week for us to study, and it only counts for
by Jackson ‘Jac’ Munson Hello everyone. For this weeks edition of “Just Sayin,” I’m filling in for my mom who has decided to take the week off. I’m not sure how she writes these articles (sadly, I’m the only person I know that doesn’t read her article), but I think I’ve got a small idea on how it goes. To start off, I just want to say how much I apT preciate the teachers and staff that work at my school. I never realized how much they have to deal with day in and day out until this year. They bend over backwards just to help us learn and get a good education. And not only do they help us with our academic lives, but also with our personal lives. Whenever we get out of line, they are there trying to straighten out our problems and get us back on the right track.
Tales of the Ancient Sportsman White Christmas? Maybe, but not guaranteed. The forecast this week tells us that most of the white might be gone by the end of the week. However, the weather experts tell us that another system is brewing that might give us some white again before Christmas. Whatever happens, we were able to enjoy Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” at the Civic Center in Des Moines Thursday evening. A nice group of 40 of us attended the musical and it was delightful. The show was quite different than the movie, but the theme was the same. The singing, dancing and costuming were spectacular and left us with a warm feeling of Christmas. Perhaps I was overcome with the Christmas spirit. Saturday the Ancient-ess and I headed for Des Moines, which is not a smart thing to do on a weekend before Christmas. But we stayed far from the maddening crowds and nowhere near Hobby Lobby. We stopped at Toyota of Des Moines just to look. Our looking resulted in us driving one home. I am such a soft touch. But that is my shopping pattern. Know what you want, go get it and don’t waste a lot of time while you are at it. I knew that it was time to put “Gypsy Rose”, the maroon Impala out to pasture. She was beginning to show signs of deterioration and eventual costly problems. Come to think of it, my body is showing some of those same symptoms. I’m not ready for the pasture yet, but after a couple of situations this past week maybe I should reconsider. Anyway my first look was at a

New Sharon Sun 10% of our final semester grade. On a dif different topic, I just want to add how thankful I am for the great parents I have. They do so much for us kids and it’s crazy how much goes unrecognized. My dad usually gets up at 4:00 a.m. and is in Newton by 5:30. I’m definitely not a morning person and I could not imagine having to get up that early every day. My mom works in town, so she doesn’t have to get up as early or travel as far as he does. Even with their busy schedules, they still manage to find time to attend all of my basketball games or band and vocal concerts. One thing that I’ve always tried to live by is respecting my parents, no matter what reason I have to be upset with them. It makes me so mad to see kids disrespect their parents, especially when they get almost everything they want. I hope one day kids see how much they have, instead of what they don’t have. I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this chapter of “Just Sayin.” Have a good week and have a Merry Christmas!
sassy little red Prius. She fluttered her eye lashes at me and whispered 51 city/48 hwy mpg in my ear. It was love at first sight and I knew she belonged to me. It was the same way with the Ancient-ess nearly 55 years ago. I was going through the lunch line at Penn College and saw her washing pots and pans back in the kitchen. I nudged my buddy and told him that I was going to marry that girl. He asked me who she was and I told him that I didn’t know, but I was about to find out. In both cases the details were worked out and I claimed my prize. The Ancient-ess has been with me for nearly 52 years now and “Scarlet” the Prius started her tenure Saturday. One of those pasture episodes happened Thursday as we were loading the bus to go to Des Moines. It was time to depart and my bus driver asked me where our seats were in the Civic Center. All of a sudden it hit me that my tickets were back in my office at the bank. I tore out of there and made a bee line to the bank. I have been moving my office from the second floor to the first floor, so I headed to the first floor office. I couldn’t find the tickets and then it dawned on me that they were in the second drawer left side of my old desk. I ran up the back stairs to my office and there they were. It was back down stairs and to my car in double time. I was back on the bus and on the road only 10 minutes late. Apologies were made and the folks got a good chuckle. Also my pacemaker was adequately tested for this month. On lady told me to not tell
my kids about this or they would want to put me in a nursing home. I’m not coming just yet. The second incident happened Friday night. My boss from Knoxville emailed me Monday and asked me if I would cover the KnoxvilleOskaloosa games in Knoxville Friday. I went to Knoxville and charted the girl’s game after which I went down for interviews. The other sports writer from the paper was already there. Oops! I had forgotten to reply that I would be there. I told the other guy to go ahead and write it as I was going home and watch the Hawkeyes and the Clones. Pasture? No! Please Mr. Custer, I don’t want to go. I was bummed by the way the game ended. The Hawks did everything, but win the game. Missed free throws were huge, but what an outstanding game. I think it would have been a different story if the game had been in Carver Hawkeye instead of the Magic Kingdom. I did manage to cover games on Monday and Tuesday last week. Monday night I had the Pella Christian games at PCM and the Mustangs won both games. Fred Lorensen has another mighty fine boy’s team at PCM again and I would look for them to show up at the “Well” in March. Tuesday night I was in Oskaloosa for the games between the Indians and Pella Christian. Pella Christian won both games, but the Eagles were tested. Once again it is time to see what happened in our yesterdays. 75 years ago: Dec. 21, 1938Fremont rallies to beat Hedrick 26-18. There was a man who approached God & asked Him, “Lord, how much time is a million yearsup in heaven?” “Well,” God said, “a million years is but a second in heaven.””Oh!” said the man, “and up in heaven how much money is a million dollars?” “Well,” said God, “a million dollars is only a penny in heaven.” “Great!” said the man. “God, give me one of your pennies.” “All right,” said the heavenly Father. “Just wait a second.” Waiting...waiting...waiting and waiting. Not easy is it? At least for some of us, including myself, but some people are so patient, like Anna from the Christmas story... Like 2:36-38, Anna There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eightyfour. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting

Parson to Person
and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Here is something many don’t even think about...In Jewish customs girls would marry between the ages of 12 & 16, her husband died when she was 21, and she saw the Messiah at the age of 84, she waited between 61 & 65 years! Not just waiting at home while doing her normal routine...she waited in the temple, while worshipping, praying and fasting!! I am willing to confess something very shocking...I am not a patient person! I hate waiting for anything! Hate being late! It’s worse than a thorn in he side for me!! I think I am better than I used to be, but I know I have a long ways to go to get where Anna was, or most importantly, where God wants me! Patience, waiting, persevering... they all go hand in hand! We have
been engrained with...have it now, don’t wait, get it while you can mentality, that we have forgotten the lessons of old... “All good things come to those who wait.” Some would say that Anna was special, a chosen person, yes, but she was no different then you and me! The difference? Focusing on the promise of the Messiah! The Messiah that would save the world! Our focus needs to be on the promise of the Coming King. They were waiting for his coming, we are to be focused on His return, and to patiently endure until it happens. Patience is so much more than waiting in line to check out of the store, waiting for your food at a restaurant, being stuck in traffic, waiting for people to show up to leave on time! -Ephesians 4:2, Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love -Romans 12:12, Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in
prayer. -James 5:8, You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. The original Hebrew texts uses 2 different words in these 4 verses, one uses it as a noun, it is a thing that you possess, and the other as a verb, the thing that you possess, but it is put to work! When patience is put into action, it can also be called, longsuffering, enduring, perseverance! It gives us hope through our walk with God, it is not easy, but we need to patient, we need to endure and persevere through all the troubles and trials! But it is all worth it because the Lord’s coming is near! Don’t give up, persevere through it all, because God will come through on His promise of Jesus’ return! He is coming back, and it will be completely unexpected!

NM Girls Basketball in Full Swing
By Coach L.E. Moore November 22, 2013 North Mahaska 38 Belle Plaine 45 It was great to get started at home against a very good opponent. Belle Plaine was ranked #10 in the state with a good post player. We worked hard every possession, which is the Warhawk way, and kept digging in a little deeper but we just couldn’t contain their 6’1” player, Cameo Pope. We got into foul trouble which had us backing off on our defense a little and we were not shooting the ball well at critical times. As a coach I thought we learned a lot about what it is going to take to compete at this level. It was the first varsity game for several of our players so the learning curve is huge and first time jitters can be hard to overcome. We will keep getting better and better with each passing game and the girls will continue to play strong. I am proud to be their coach and it will be a good year There was balanced scoring by the team with Julia Groenenboom leading the way with 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists followed by Michaela Heys with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Maggie Ferguson contributed 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals and Mackenzie Fuller popped in 5 points, 2 rebound and 2 assists. Rounding out the scoring was Bailey Upton with 1 point, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. November 26, 2013 North Mahaska 30 Keota 33 All I can say is WOW! Words cannot express how hard we played– we just could not find our offensive rhythm in this game against a very determined Keota team. We need to clean up some things on offense. I like our defense but we are not getting things done on the offensive end. The girls know this and we are searching for that girl who will step up to the challenge. Both teams struggled to get anything going during most of the game. We had a decent first half and maintained a lead but could not sustain it through the conclusion of the game. We made a strong effort in the fourth quarter but fell short at the end. We do appreciate the great fan support and the team will continue to work very hard for 32 minutes each game night to represent the
Julia Groenenboom Forces her way to the hoop. Warhawks and our community with pride and determination. Scoring 12 points each were Rachel Sherburne and Julia Groenenboom with the only other scorer being Michaela Heys with 6. Sherburne crashed the boards with 8 rebounds followed by Heys with 6 and Shaina Spears with 5. December 3, 2013 North Mahaska 49 Tri-County 18 The Warhawks hosted the TriCounty Trojans and the girls came to the gym focused and ready to hit the hardwood! We played with energy and also had girls stepping up to the challenge. I am very proud and happy for this group of young women. The team saw balanced scoring with 6 team member scoring and everyone saw minutes on the floor. It was an exciting night in the Warhawk gym as many of the girls saw their first varsity victory. When playing defense you have to have a heart, if not you have to build the soul. Well tonight we had heart and we played hard for 32 minutes and held a team who had been scoring at least 40 points a game to 18. We can play full court man if that is what we need to do and we found it within ourselves tonight to do just that. It was a well balanced game – so lets get after it – play hard and think strong in the upcoming weeks! Michaela Heys had a double double with 17 points and 10 rebound with 2 steals followed by Maggie Ferguson with 13 points (3 threes) and 3 assists. Julia Groenenboom added 9 points 2 rebounds, 3 steals
and 3 assists while Rachel Sherburne chipped in 6 points, snagged 5 rebounds, had 3 steals and 2 assists. Samantha Edmundson and Mackenzie Fuller each added 2 points. Great effort by all. December 6, 2013 North Mahaska 64 Montezuma 34 The Montezuma Bravettes made the trip south on Highway 63 to take on the Warhawks in New Sharon on a Friday evening…when the two rival teams get together it will be a high energy atmosphere in the gym and this one did not disappoint. The Bravettes came out with pressure and we made it work to our advantage. The fast break and our team defense were the key factors in this game. Unselfish play by all the players was also a huge factor in our success tonight. It was another night of balanced stats with 29 rebounds, 15 steals and 16 assists and everyone seeing the floor for some playing minutes. Michaela Heys led all scorers with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists followed by Julia Groenenboom with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 6 assists. Next up was Bailey Upton with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals; Rachel Sherburne contributed 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists. Three players rounded out the scoring with 4 points each – Maggie Ferguson, Samantha Edmundson and Shaina Spears and Edmundson and Spears snagged 3 and 5 rebounds respectively. Great effort and a good win for the Warhawks!

Warhawks Get Win Over Sigourney Submitted by: Coach Phillips We went into this game knowing that if we played our game without many mistakes and played solid defense we should finish on top. We jumped on them quick then missed a bunch of two foot shots and finished the quarter down 10-11. Roose came alive in the second and hit some key shots along with Hibler taking the ball to the basket. Hehli had some foul trouble and had to sit most of first half. We finished the half up 27-17. We kept the defensive pressure on in the third along with playing solid on offense and finished up 41-24. We let them slip in closer in the fourth but did a nice job of hitting freethrows down the stretch. the final was NM 59 Sigourney 49. This a good team win!
Freshmen Milan DeJong shoots a 3. Senior Connor Hehli shoots his foul shots.

Athletic Bears Take Down the Warhawks Submitted by: Coach Phillips BGM has a very athletic group of players and they came to our place on Tuesday the 10th and displayed that. We came out a bit flat and you can’t afford to do that against teams like that. They jumped out to a first quarter lead of 20-6, ouch! The second quarter was a bit better on of offense but we still had a hard time stopping a hot shooting group with the half ending 17-41. The guys did not quit working hard and kept competing a team that couldn’t miss from anywhere and the third ended 28-52. We played
them head to head in the fourth but proved that it is hard to dig a hole that deep against a good team and come back. The guys will learn from this one along with us coaches and be much better in the next meeting. Final 39-64. Hehli 18pts. 15rebs. 4blks 1steal Pothoven 11pts. 1reb. 2steals Wanders 5pts. 1reb. 3steals Roose 3pts. 1reb. 1ass. Hibler 1reb. 4ass. 1steal Bortell 2reb. Fleener 1reb. 1steal Dejong 2pts. 1reb. 2steals

Submitted by: Coach Phillips We always seem to get pumped to play our big rival in Montezuma and this first meeting of the year played out to be a heated battle. We all felt that if we played a high energy defense and error free of offense that this would be a tough battle and that is what it was. We came out a bit sluggish and gave them a slight lead in the first quarter 6-10. The guys came out in the second and picked up the defensive intensity and executed well on offense and ended the half with a 22-21 lead. The third quarter was a very even back and forth contest with Monte. With a slight lead of 34-31. By midway into the fourth we had the lead and then they hit some key shots and we missed at some untimely times that down the stretch cost us the win. The guys played there hearts out and felt that they should beat that team and will in our next meeting. The final score was 43-53. Hehli 16pts. 19rebs. 7blks. 1ass. Wanders 16pts. 3rebs. Bortell 8pts. 6rebs. 2ass. Pothoven 3pts. 3rebs. 2ass. 3steals Hibler 1reb. 1ass. 2steals Fleener 3rebs. 1ass. 1steal Goemaat 1ass.
