December 26, 1963 The three-week four-event preChristmas gift days and Santa Claus party was concluded on Monday afternoon, Dec. 23, just ahead of the Christmas holiday observance of the birth of Christ. There was a total of $700 in toys, gift certificates and cash awarded to all youths of the community between the ages of 1 through 16, with recognition for youths the predominate factor this year. Saturday was the annual Santa Claus Christmas party in Sheffield. Because of inclement weather Santa was on hand and visited with the children in the 1 through 12 age group in the basement of the Memorial Hall. A total of 353 youths attended and most were accompanied by parents. Cash awards of 50 cents each were distributed by Santa’s committee of Louis Meehlhause, Dale Brayton, Jack Sheahan and E. F. Sullivan. The interior of the Memorial Hall was a welcomed change from the below zero temperatures which prevailed outside, and many compliments were received on the change in plans for the day. Monday afternoon Jackie Nolte was selected to receive the girl’s bicycle and Calvin Leeps was selected to receive the road racer. A total of five youths in the 1 through 12 age group were announced before both awards were presented. The first girl and the first boy selected who were present to receive the awards were the recipients. Twelve gift certificates valued at $2.50 each were presented to youths in the 13 through 16 age groups. Recipients Monday afternoon were Theresa Rowson, Lila Van Blaricom, Terril Hobbiebrunken, Shirley Pinneke, Jim Allison, Kay Rother, Betty Bonjour, Ruth Truax, Kathy Culver, John Logan, Ann Bechtel and Pamela Marken. Making the selections were Calvin Schneck, Leo Chinberg and Louis Meehlhause. Sheffield-Chapin cage teams split wins with CAL girls and boys in North Star conference competition Friday night on the hardwood at Latimer. Spartanettes paced by Leona Bruhn with 49 points and a new school record defeated CAL girls 66 to 61 and tied with the losers for the conference first place with 5-1 records. Spartans leading by 15 points late in the first half 39-24 lost the initiative in the third period which closed 49-48, but still maintained the lead, CAL going ahead with two minutes of the fourth period gone. The contest was then a rip-snorter the host club finishing on the top end of a 65-69 count. This was the first loss in eight starts for the Spartans. CAL has won seven and lost two. Leona
Bruhn notched 49 points at Latimer Friday night for a new school record, Jan Davolt having previously set the mark at 43. Bruhn made 11 field goals in the first half and eight of 12 free throws, then netted five doubles and nine consecutive gift shots in the second half, for a total 13 consecutive free throws during the game. Pam Atkinson, held scoreless in the first half, planted one double and hit with seven consecutive gift shots for a 9 tally. Donna Foell swished in three from the field for 6 and Bev Levitt added 2 points. Karen Emhoff, Diana Grunhovd, Jan Frey and Linda Bonjour held down the defensive posts. Friday it looked like just another ball game for the Spartans with advantages of 17-11 and 41-29 in the first two periods. Ron Foell pumped in five doubles and two free throws, and Chuck Schmalbeck pulled in 13 rebounds and hit with four doubles. Ed Hopkey and Harlan Plagge each planted five doubles, and the latter triple gift shots to keep CAL boys in the running. The third period went to CAL boys Hopkey getting four, Plagge two, Andy Sorensen two and Don Stratman one all from the field, Sorensen getting the lone single for the 19 points and a 49 to 48 Spartans tally. Dick Larson Spartans guard, with two doubles and seven of eight free throws in the first half, notched the teams only three field goals and Gary Heflin who pulled in 16 rebounds during the game, added two singles. Plagge and Stratman worked
the boards hard in the last half and furnished the host club with the edge. In the final Stanza Larson made 10 points, Rick Taylor and Butch Skovgard each a double, and Foell notched two singles for his only scoring in the last half. Schmalbeck was held scoreless in the last two quarters. Hopkey pushed in three from the field for a Comet 61-55 edge, Don Latham reserve guard adding three more doubles. Spartans closed the gap to 65-67 and with 11 seconds remaining Sorenson notched a double for the final 65-69 tally. Larson held game scoring honors with 27 points. Foell collected 14 tallies, Schmalbeck and Heflin each 8, Skovgard 6 and Taylor 2. Itchin’ for a New Year 3HGOH\¡V 3RQGHULQJV Nick Pedley is editor for the Hampton Chronicle, The Sheffield Press, and Pioneer Enterprise.
Much like Thanksgiving, New Year’s ranks high on my list of favorite holidays simply because it doesn’t require much effort. You can sit back with friends, munch on some snacks and watch the clock roll over to a brand new year. It’s the thick of college bowl season as well, so there’s no shortage of good football on TV. Oh, yeah – the drinks. Can’t forget the Champaign! Who knew you could have so much fun celebrating the arrival of a new digit? There’s no need to go shopping for presents and you don’t have to worry about cooking a huge meal. New Year’s is celebration in its purest form. Though fun-haters may call it a frivolous holiday that lacks merit or meaning, I really don’t think that’s true. New Year’s offers a fresh start; a definitive breaking point from one year to the next; a clean slate. It’s a year filled with unopened doors and unlimited opportunities – who knows what lies ahead? Maybe it’s the Cubs fan in me, but I’ve always loved New Year’s for all of the reasons listed above. I know it might be dumb to some people, but I truly believe the holiday holds value. I’ve had plenty of years that I’d like to forget, and New Year’s provided me with that defining split from whatever crummy stuff I was dealing with. Of course, New Year’s also gives us the perfect opportunity to reflect on the past 365 days. For most people, the year included its ups and downs. There were probably loved ones lost or bad decisions made; maybe you got a promotion at work or landed a better job. In any case, it’s important to absorb the lessons learned and cherish the highlights – doing so will no doubt make for a better 2014. All this hope and promise typically ushers in a bold new attitude for people. I’m not sure when the New Year’s resolution made it’s first appearance, but it’s one aspect of the holiday that I can certainly live without. The New Year’s resolution is a good
idea on the whole. It gives people a goal to work towards that feeds off an attitude of improvement. People want to turn the page and really better themselves in the New Year, and that’s great. However, they fall flat on their face far too often, and it’s a wonder anyone makes these stupid promises with themselves at all. I look no further than myself for a shining example of this resolution ridiculousness. For at least the past three years I’ve been resolving to quit biting my fingernails, work out more and spend my money more wisely. I plan to put those same items on my list this year, but I’m less than optimistic any of them will come full circle. Usually the first to go is my plan to exercise more. It’s so easy put it off because I’m too “busy or “tired. I can talk myself out of things very easily, and my disdain for working out makes it even easier. In spite of my fervent resentment, I’d really like to get back in shape. Maybe I need a personal trainer; or maybe I should just join the army. Next to go on my list of hopeless list of resolutions is my bad habit of biting my fingernails. My mom would always nag me growing up to quit, but I could never quite kick it. It’s pointless and childish, but I do it without thinking most times. If you’ve got any suggestions or remedies, let me know. The final nail in my resolution coffin is usually my spending habits. It’s never gotten out of control or anything, I’ll just spend too much one weekend on pointless things. Be it a trip, night out with friends or something else, my bank account will get squeezed and I find myself slapping my forehead. I think college loans and other bills will easily keep my spending in check this year, however. You can’t spend money if it’s not there! I hope you ring in the New Year with style and flair. Have fun, be safe and have a great 2014.
-XVW 7DONLQ¡ %\ - = One holiday down . . . one to go. Paper wise that is. Friday was Monday . . . today (Monday) is Tuesday. And I’m already preparing for next week. Know what I just said? Let me know, too! Anyway . . . I can say that this week went smoothly . . . so far. Even got some printing done. Now I just have to clean up the press! That takes some time as it really needs a good clean. I’m still walking around in a maze here in the front of the office. (I said maze . . . not daze!) But I plan to straighten that out this week, too! If only I can find the time! I’m, sure that somewhere under all these cartons of paper and envelopes . . . there’s carpet that needs vacuuming! Home . . . finally got all the shopping completed, gifts sorted out, and wrapped. I’m ahead of the past few years. I usually spend part of Christmas Eve day wrapping gifts. I spent part of Saturday and Sunday doing it this year. Now I have to find a way of getting them in the car, getting them to Altoona, and still remembering who gets what! Name tags? That would be way too simple! It’s when Nic opens up a doll that I wish that I would have used them! Just kidding! That hasn’t happened . . . yet! Friday late afternoon I drove to Altoona to spend the evening with Angela and family. It was her birthday . . . and I knew I wouldn’t get to see her over the week end. The weather was a big factor in my deciding to go. Not good, everyone said. Matter-of-fact . . . a couple of them said I was not very bright . . . or something to that effect. I already knew that! But . . . as it turned out . . . the roads were merely wet. No ice . . . until I reached Altoona. And not bad there for the
most part. We went out for a late supper . . . and I returned home before midnight. I know I’m a little bit left of center . . . but I enjoy driving at night! Anyway . . . slept in an hour or so Saturday a.m., and then headed here to the office for awhile. Sunday finished wrapping the gifts and headed to Mason City to do a little shopping for myself. And lo and behold . . . Monday a.m. rolled around once again! This time I want to wish everyone a “HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR. My plan for Christmas is to spend Christmas Eve and part of Christmas Day with the young ones in Altoona. And to watch Little Lid on Christmas morning. Hopefully this year I’ll remember my camera! Be good, Kids+! It’s Showtime!
Ending The Year On A High Note As 2013 comes to an end, we cap off a year that has pointed Iowa in the right direction on many fronts. We ensured more Iowans have access to good jobs, great communities, strong local schools and affordable health care—all while balancing the state budget without raising taxes. These fiscally responsible investments in Iowa are paying off. Last week, the state’s nonpartisan Revenue Estimating Conference confirmed that Iowa’s economy is steadily growing. Our bipartisan effort to expand access to affordable health care, the Iowa Health & Wellness Plan, was approved. Also Iowa children are showing improvements in health, education and wellbeing, according to a new report from Kids Count. This week, the nation’s leading wind power utility announced a major expansion in Iowa. MidAmerican Energy is buying hundreds of Iowa-built wind turbines from Siemens Energy to be installed on
wind farms throughout the state. This clean, locally produced energy reduces our dependence on foreign oil, while creating good jobs and economic opportunities in our communities. While 2013 is ending with lots of good news, there is more we can do to grow and strengthen Iowa’s middle class. Thousands of Iowans are still struggling to work their way out of the national recession. The number of Iowans in need of food has increased dramatically in recent years, and our state’s childhood poverty rate is climbing faster than the national average. As we look to 2014, I will make sure we use Iowa’s resources wisely to build on our successes. You can expect to see another balanced state budget that invests in education, worker training and job creation. If you have ideas that can help expand Iowa’s middle class, please e-mail me. The 2014 session is less than a month away and I value your opinions.
In Iowa’s Interest: Investments in Early Learning Pay Off By Senator Tom Harkin In 1991, the Committee on Economic Development issued a landmark report titled “The Unfinished Agenda: A New Vision for Child Development and Education. The group consisted of some of the top business executives in America who took a tough-minded look at American education, and concluded that the highest rate of return on investment for our education dollars would come from investing in early learning from birth to age five. More recently, in 2010, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – again, tough-minded business executives – issued a major report. And their report concluded that quality early learning is critical to our national economic security. If we fail to invest in children early on, during the period of their most rapid development, those children are more likely to enter school behind. If the playing field is unleveled at the outset, how can we hope to remain a nation of promise and prosperity for all? It is with that in mind that I have introduced the Strong Start for America’s Children Act, a bill that would greatly expand access to high-quality early learning experiences for children from birth to kindergarten entry. Something that we need to expunge from our lexicon is the term “pre-school. There is no such thing as pre-school because we know that learning begins at birth and the preparation for learning begins before birth. My bill reinforces this idea by ensuring that our most vulnerable children have the support they need to be healthy, happy, and ready for school on the first day of kindergar-
ten. We start by creating new early learning quality partnerships, so that Early Head Start grantees can partner with center-based and family child care providers to offer infants and toddlers full-day, full-year, highquality services. I also proposed a new federal-state partnership to accelerate the work currently being done in states to support high-quality early learning for 3- and 4-year olds. To receive funding through the partnership, states must support programs that are of high-quality, meaning programs must have well-trained teachers, low class sizes, low child-to-staff ratios, curricula that are developmentally appropriate, and programs must provide other services that support the non-academic needs of kids, including nutritious foods, physical activity, and strong parent and family engagement. These are the kinds of common-sense, research-based activities and services that any parent would want for their child, and they also reflect the type of support that many states and communities are currently providing in their early learning programs. I want to thank President Obama for calling for this deep investment in early learning during his State of the Union. This legislation follows through on that vision. But it will also face opposition from those who say we can’t afford it. The evidence and research around early learning is too strong to ignore and if we don’t invest now, we will pay for it later in the form of high school drop-outs and crowded prisons. Quite simply, failing to invest in high-quality early learning is against our moral and economic responsibility as a nation.

West Fork School Happenings by Darrin Strike, Superintendent The Holiday break is upon us! We have had a great first half of the school year and as the West Fork Community we should be proud of our student body and their accomplishments thus far into the school year. The Holiday Spirit was certainly lifted by the energy of our students performing for all who attended one or more of the four music concerts held in our district the past month. Our middle school students in grades 7 & 8 have now experienced a semester of digital learning supported by the iPads purchased for them prior to the start of the school year. At the current time, West Fork students in grades 7-12 each have their own device supplied by the district and every K-4 elementary classroom is equipped with at least five devices to create a classroom learning center. As a district, we have grown digitally through continuous professional development for our educators and the acquisition of more electronic learning devices. Our ultimate mission at the West Fork Community School District is for our graduates to be
…….. “successful learners, citizens, and leaders “ in the 21st Century and we see this transformation as a step to prepare all students with the skills for the technologically driven world they will live in. The Spirit of West Fork campaign this year was a huge success. To date, this endeavor has served 31 families and 80 of our West Fork students. This program is driven by the Spirit of West Fork committee which is comprised of a group of school employees and student leaders. In addition, many local citizens , churches, and businesses supported the program by purchasing gifts from the ornament trees or providing the financial support necessary to assist with purchasing food boxes, clothing items, movie tickets, or other supporting gifts for the families. On December 19 & 20, merchandise was distributed to the families who were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity exhibited by the school district and our communities. As we transition into the winter months, I would like to remind parents to sign up for the “School
Alerts” program. Our district uses this as our main venue for communicating adjustments in our regular school schedule due to inclement weather. Step 1: Visit https://schoolalerts. iowa.gov/ Step 2: Select “Sign Up” Step 3: Follow the prompts to set up an account and register to receive alerts regarding “West Fork Schools”. Questions? Contact the Superintendents’ office at 822-3236 or 8924159 for assistance. As we turn the calendar to January 2014, I am reaching out to parents to take an active role in the education of your child(ren). This can be as simple as scheduling a time each day to read with or to your child . On a larger scale, West Fork CSD receives a large amount of support from parent groups such as the West Fork Booster Club, the West Fork Music Boosters, and the Early Childhood Advisory Committee. These groups are critical to providing a quality education in the building and for providing the necessary uniforms and equipment for our music programs and athlet-
LATIMER from page 1 construction must be necessary to serve a public use; it must represent a reasonable relationship to an overall plan of transporting energy in the public interest; and the line’s route must be practical and reasonable. Sheridan emphasized that the line doesn’t have to serve a public use here in Iowa, only somewhere, which is Illinois in this case. She enouraged landowners, tenants, community members and families to file objections with the IUB to let their displeasure known. “The more objections they have, the more the utilities board will have to think about this,” she said. Landowners have the opportunity to sign a property easement with RICL if they choose, but Sheridan cautioned against it. She said many people are uninformend when they enter into an easement agreement, and noted things like trees and other property can be destroyed when the company starts construction of the line. “That’s something you need to understand – what are all these lines and towers going to look like on my property?” she said. “It’s our hope that nobody signs it. We don’t want anybody to sign any voluntary easements.” Many of those in attendance were upset at the possibility of losing
portions of their land to RICL for the company’s own financial gain. They believed that if the line was approved, at least some of the energy should remain in Iowa. “If this were MidAmerican, you probably wouldn’t see this big of a push against it,” said rural Latimer landowner Jen Koenen. “MidAmerican is sort of local, the energy is used here in Iowa. This [RICL] isn’t.” Exporting energy for the benefit of another state displeased many, but there were other concerns. A large portion of the questionand-answer session was dedicated to land devaluation, declined crop production and negative health side effects if the line is constructed. Sheridan had few answers for the crowd, citing many studies on each subject were inconclusive or had too small of a sample size. However, nearly everyone was in agreement that the line would be detrimental to land value and crop production in some way. They said soil compaction would lead to lower yields; and towers would take portions of ground out of production, thus decreasing the land’s overall value. “If anyone from Rock Island that tells you it’s not going to devalue your land, it’s wrong!” shouted Lu Verne farmer Henry Schnakenberg. Schnakenberg was one of many
in attendance who felt the merits of the project were based solely on boosting the company’s profit margins with little to no respect towards landowners. He was passionate about stopping RICL, but was uncertain whether PRIA’s efforts would prove successful. “I don’t know if we’ll be able to stop it, but I hope we do,” he said after the meeting. “If we can’t, we’re gonna try to make them pay five times what they’re offering us now. Because right now, they’re throwing pennies at us.” Though emotions were high, Sheridan reminded the crowd that PRIA needs to keep cool if they want to shut down the line. She said the organization is scheduled to meet with numerous high-ranking state officials and has contacted Iowa’s national representatives. PRIA has also hired two attorneys and attended many government functions in recent months. Sheridan admitted the group might have a drawn out fight in front of them, but she remained hopeful. “They call us N.I.M.B.Y. – not in my backyard. Folks, we’re not N.I.M.B.Y. We’re doing this for the counties, the state and the families,” she said. “It’s about unintended consequences. If we let Clean Line come through, what’s next?”
ic teams to compete and perform outside the classroom. These organizations schedule many events and fundraisers to support our district by purchasing uniforms and equipment so our students represent West Fork with class. In order to run these fundraising events, these organizations are dependent on the assistance of the parents of students in our programs. Please make this year’s New Year’s resolution to get involved in a parent group and support our programs. If you have any questions about how to get involved, please feel free to contact me at 641-822-3236 or 641-892-4160. A final note is my wishes for each and every family to have a safe Holiday Season and a wish for 2014 to be a great year for all. Go Warhawks!

Peterson out for season after freak accident By Kristi Nixon RICEVILLE – An accident in the locker room prior to the No. 13 West Fork girls 55-18 win at Riceville on Tuesday sent Warhawk senior Lindsey Peterson to the Mayo Clinic for 100 stitches and likely ended her high school basketball career. Peterson, who according to coach Rodney Huber, was taking pictures with teammates in the locker room before the game, slipped and fell, hitting her face on the corner of the bench she was standing on. “It was the worst thing I’ve seen,” Huber said. “It went straight through her gum, affected a few of her teeth and she had a big gash on the right side of her face.” According to Huber, Peterson was taken to the hospital in Osage and sent on to Mayo, where she had a CAT scan; she had 100 stitches and three plates Peterson put in her face for fractures and will most likely have to have plastic surgery to repair nerve damage. He added that he didn’t get to see much of the injury because Peterson was holding a towel to her face and there was a lot of bleeding. “I feel awful,” Huber said. “Needless to say she won’t be playing for a minimum of six weeks, so she is done.” It was Peterson’s 18th birthday. An all-state volleyball player, Peterson holds West Fork school records for kills and digs. But West Fork pulled together for a big win over the Wildcats, leading 40-10 at the half. “I was proud of them (the team),” Huber said. “They really laid it on them (Riceville). I didn’t know how they were going to respond because they looked pale; looked like they’d seen a ghost.”
Riceville bows to No. 3 Warhawks RICEVILLE – Riceville was no match for the Class 2A third-ranked West Fork boys basketball team in a 75-26 Corn Bowl Conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Four Warhawks tallied double figures scoring, led by Jacob Kuhlmeier’s 14 points off of the bench. Sam Amsbaugh and Evan Sprung each scored 12 and Hunter Myers chipped in with 10 as coach Frank Schnoes’ squad had a 54-10 halftime lead. Kuhlmeier also led the way in rebounding with eight and Tanner Tuttle also had a big effort off the bench with six boards. Myers finished with four assists and four steals as the Warhawks improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the Corn Bowl. with the highest point totals. Teams were also recognized for academics, community service and sportsmanship. The West Fork Dance Team performed a pom routine at the state competition this year. They were awarded with a Division I rating. The dance team is coached by Kaci Harper and Amy McKee. “The girls worked very hard on this routine and we are so proud of their accomplishments, stated by Coaches.” The girls will be performing on December 19th, January 17th, January 21st, and February 4th.
