2013 – A Year in Review January

Weaver’s wins business decorating contest

Weaver’s Leather Store is the winner of the inaugural Christmas window decorating contest for Buffalo Center businesses, which was organized this year by North Iowa Betterment. Participating business placed boxes at Johnson’s Food Center, and the public voted for their favorite displays by filling the boxes with items for the local food pantry. Weaver’s collected the most votes for their display, which included decorated windows and Christmas music playing on Main Street.

Christmas lighting winners claim cash prizes After narrowing down a field of 29 applicants, the Buffalo Center City Council hired a new police officer at its monthly meeting last Wednesday, Jan. 9. Matthew Holmquist, 23, of Oakland, MN, has accepted the full time position with the Buffalo Center Police Department and will begin his work here February 1.

Bruce Venteicher, right, presented Cody Smidt with a football signed by the 2012 Minnesota Vikings for his 11th birthday last Tuesday, Jan. 8. The ball was originally meant to replace another autographed ball, also being held by Cody, which was stolen and then recovered along with the Smidt family’s car. There are only a few days left to grab a bite to eat at B.C. Restaurant, as owner Rochelle Wickwire has announced that she is closing her establishment. Wickwire says her last day of business will be Tuesday, Jan. 29, with an auction taking place Saturday, Feb. 16. The most dramatic phase of construction thus far got underway last week at the site of the new tornado safe room in Buffalo Center. Wells Concrete from Wells, MN, is using a massive crane to install the precast concrete walls and ceiling of the safe room building, which is designed to withstand an F4 tornado with 250 mile per hour winds.

Elroy and Mary Lee Lowe won $100 from Farmers Trust and Savings Bank as the first place winners of Buffalo Center’s annual Christmas Lighting Contest. FTSB’s Mike Kettwick, right, presented the cash prize to the Lowes, who live at 205 4th Ave. NW.

Krista Hovland goes up for a shot in the Lady Bison’s match with West Hancock last Tuesday, Jan. 29 in Buffalo Center. The Lady Bison head into their final match of the conference basketball season this week to settle a three way tie for second place in the NIC.

Bob and Connie Anderson of 101 4th St. NE in Buffalo Center were the second place winners of NIB’s Christmas Lighting Contest this holiday season. They received a check for $75 from Weaver’s Leather Store, which was presented by Julie Weaver, right. Helping the Andersons pick up their prize was their granddaughter, Lily Winter. Susan Jensen, left, accepts a $50 check from Nicky Baumann of Murra Hardware for placing second in North Iowa Betterment’s Christmas Lighting Contest for Buffalo Center. The Jensens’ home can be seen at 2309 440th St., northwest of town just off the two-mile blacktop.

The 52nd Annual Buffalo Center USBC Bowling Association Tournament was held January 7-13 at Buffalo Lanes, where the Buffalo Lanes team won the four-man championship. From left are: Doug Aukes, Denny Meinders, Duane Hinz and Ed Droessler.

Three-month-old Brayden Berggren is the winner of this year’s Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Sweepstakes, after his sponsor, Berggren Seeds, was the first entry selected by random drawing last Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Buffalo Center Tribune. The Buffalo Center Volunteer Fire Department is ready for anything after updating its vehicle fleet with a new equipment truck. The department recently purchased a 2003 Ford F-550 truck to replace its old 1988 equipment van, which was acquired in 1999. An excellent season of Lady Bison Basketball ended all too soon last Tuesday, as Northwood-Kensett defeated

North Iowa 42-34 in Buffalo Center. The Lady Bison, who went 9-14 last year, finished this season with an overall record of 17-6. Scott Norstrud officiated his final game last Thursday, Feb. 14, as he capped off 34 years as a referee in the same gymnasium where he got his start. Jenna Koppen and Derek Yegge were crowned Queen and King of the annual FFA/FCCLA Sweetheart Dance at North Iowa High School last Saturday, Feb. 16. Buffalo Center Police Chief Matt Holmquist brought along his family as he signed his Oath of Office during the Buffalo Center City Council meeting last Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Buffalo Center is the winner of the John Deere 3-Wheeler with Dump Box donated by Ernie Williams John Deere store in Buffalo Center. 20 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 30, 1993 People driving in to Buffalo Center Friday night were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful sight of luminaries – some 218 of them which lined Buffalo Center’s business thoroughfare from Highway 9 north to 3rd Avenue. The white sacks anchored with sand and containing white candles had been set in place by members of the youth group from the First Congregational Church. The significance to viewers is that the “Light had come into the world in the Person of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. 30 Years Ago Tribune Files of Thursday, December 29, 1983 A second holiday storm of major proportion roared through the upper Midwest over the Christmas holiday. The many sounds of Jordan Mayland By Joe Lawler Editor’s note: The following article was published in the December 4, 2013 edition of Juice – a publication of the Des Moines Register. Jordan Mayland is a 2000 graduate of North Iowa High School and the son of Cheri Mayland of Buffalo Center. Jordan now resides in Des Moines. You could assemble a band using just Jordan Mayland. The 32-year-old musician plays guitar and sings in Volcano Boys. He plays keyboard and sings in Jordan Mayland and the Thermal Detonators. He drums for the Wheelers. He makes electronic music with Tires. He’s not currently playing bass for anyone, but he did play that instrument with Nuclear Rodeo. In fact, Mayland’s Thermal Detonators group started as a oneman recording project with Mayland playing every part. That’s the case for the project’s first EP and upcoming full-length, “I Wrote It all Down. But despite the album not coming out until later this month, Mayland is getting ready to head back into the studio next month with the musicians he’s been playing with at Thermal Detonators’ live shows. “When I started getting together with the actual members of the Thermal Detonators, we started working on new material, Mayland said. “It’s interesting hearing my songs put together as a full band versus me being a control freak and playing every song myself. There are certain things I like about playing every instrument on an album, but there’s something about the dynamic of having different human beings playing those parts. Starting with the Carpet Mayland’s first band, Keepers of the Carpet, arrived onto the local music scene pretty much fully formed. Keepers were known as an Ames band, where bands often spring up as college students move to town and start playing together. But Mayland’s band started out in Buffalo Center, located in the northernmost row of counties in Iowa. Mayland and his friends founded the band while still in high school. The reason: there wasn’t a lot to do in the 900-person town. “I think just because it was a small town, we had to make our own fun and make our own opportunities, Mayland said. Soon after, Keepers of the Carpet were performing at prom, playing at the Deep Muck Big Rake festival in neighboring Rake and pretty much anywhere else they could. There were no big shows coming to Buffalo Center, so Mayland’s band became the big show. The band’s Ames affiliation came when bassist Zack Smith moved to the city to attend Iowa State. Soon the band was playing regular gigs there, with the rest of the band commuting from Buffalo Center and Pella, where Mayland was studying music at Central College. In Ames, the Keepers competed in a VEISHEA battle of the bands against Pookey Bleum. Pookey won and Keepers lost, but Pookey Bleum band members Patrick Fleming and Aaron Hefley ended up signing Keepers to their label, Bi-Fi Records.

“Jordan has a musical mind like I had never seen before, Fleming said. “His own songs are fantastic, but he can do any style. He could be in a metal band, or a Weezer-style pop band or a jazz group. He’s one step ahead of everyone else in the studio. He already hears all the parts in his head. Chris Ford first became aware of Mayland’s music as a fan. In July, Maximum Ames Records, which Ford co-founded, released a selftitled album by the Wheelers. “He’s definitely one of the most valuable musical entities in Iowa, both in terms of output and his contributions to other bands, Ford said. “He’s setting the bar high in terms of musicianship and songwriting. A man of many bands Mayland said playing in as many bands as he does can get chaotic. At the moment the Thermal Detonators are the most active, but next month Volcano Boys will return to performing live regularly. He practices with Volcano Boys on Tuesday nights and Wednesdays drives up to Ames to teach music students and then practice with the Thermal Detonators. The Wheelers recently got done with a fall tour, so are taking some time off. Tires released an EP earlier this year and will be working on new music soon. Mantis Pincers, a band Mayland plays synthesizer for, might also be getting back together soon. “There’s got to be some sort of balance between my life and being a musician, Mayland said of a realization he had recently. “But something can come up or there will be a last-minute gig and suddenly I don’t have a weekend anymore. But the bands all offer Mayland something different. He describes the music of the Thermal Detonators as being more classical- and jazzinspired, with pop elements. Volcano Boys is more straightforward rock and Tires’ sound borders on punk. With Tires, Mayland gets to experiment in electronic with his Tires and TD bandmate and friend Phil Young driving most of the music. “Luckily they’re all so different and I get to play different instruments in each one. It’s like I get to wear a different face for each. When I want to be more of a drummer or singer or synth player, I get to play all those roles, Mayland said. “I think I would get bored with one band; I’m pretty ADD. I just want to keep pushing myself to prove it to me and keep myself focused and on my toes. Mayland wants 2014 to be his year, with new music coming from the Thermal Detonators, Volcano Boys and maybe a few other projects if things work out. While he describes himself as ADD, at the moment Mayland also seems driven. “I think I’m convincing myself to stay busy with my passion, rather than dilly dally around with it, Mayland said. “I am going to go all out, not just this year, but for the next couple years, releasing as much music as I can. “I write so much and the songs get piled up that by the time I get with a band I don’t remember how to play them or I’ve lost the original spark. “So I’m trying to capture what I

Estate planning help available ISU Extension and Outreach in Winnebago County will offer an estate planning workshop on January 31, 2014, at the Titonka Savings Bank in Forest City. Talking about estate planning is often difficult, and implementing an estate plan can be even harder. Farmers are unique in that there is not a distinct moment where they just walk out the door to retirement as someone in a regular wage earning job might do. There are options they can consider, such as phasing out or transitioning to another generation, and this program helps them plan for that. The “Evaluating Your Estate Plan workshop will answer estate planning questions and help prepare you for future farm transitions and estate planning. The program applies to everyone – town and country, families, couples and individuals – according to Melissa O’Rourke, Iowa State Uni-

versity Extension Farm Agribusiness Management Specialist, who is one of the speakers at the event. Kelvin Leibold, Iowa State University Extension Farm Agribusiness Management Specialist, will be the other featured speaker at the workshop. The workshop will discuss the language of estate planning, gift, estate, inheritance taxes, calculating retirement costs, and many other areas vital to creating a good estate plan. If you are confused on how to build a plan for transferring farm assets or unsure what options are best for your farm operation and family, you should attend this workshop. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 31, and advance registration is required. To register, call the Winnebago County Extension Office at 641-584-2261. There is a fee for registration. Titonka Savings Bank in Forest City is located at 101 Hwy 69.

New Year’s Resolutions Each year, many of us make New Year’s resolutions. Most of them are things that, if we actually did them, would make us better people. But, how about making a New Year’s resolution that will not only improve your own life, but also help out the environment? Such a resolution could be very simple like deciding to put out some bird feeders this year. That will not only help your local birds, but also enrich your own life, as well. Or, you might want to decide to plant a tree or a garden this spring. Doing something like that could help out Mother Nature, but also provide you with shade, beauty, or food. Some resolutions, like dedicating yourself to recycling more or contributing to conservation causes, may seem to benefit only the environment; but, since we’re all part of this world, we would all benefit from those simple acts. Other actions, like finally replacing your old light bulbs

with energy-efficient ones, making sure you turn off appliances that aren’t being used, or committing yourself to keeping your car tuned up this year, all save energy and natural resources; but they will also save you money. Maybe, as the new year begins, you could simply resolve to enjoy what nature has to offer. You could take more walks at sunrise or sunset, learn how to identify your local birds, or decide to take up a new outdoor hobby such as photography, fishing, canoeing, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. These are all relaxing ways to enjoy the outdoors, but could also provide some simple exercise. So, as the new year begins, think of things you might want to do differently in the coming year. But, try to make resolutions that will not only improve your own life, but also the world we all live in. By doing that, we can all use our New Year’s resolutions to help make our planet a better place in 2014!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
