Greenbelt begins another chapter
Sunday afternoon in the Park The Hardin County Historical Society had ice cream and a lot more this year. The society always caps off summer with the social, but last year a small contingent of vintage car enthusiasts showed up for the event. This year they doubled and tripled down in their numbers and the social moved to the St. Paul Lutheran Church and the car show moved across the street on the lawn of he old Middle School property. To see how the project has grown check page 2 for more pictures.

Documentary film maker Jon Heitland Their other two brothers, Frank and Nate, were sent to prison for 30 years for crimes they did not commit as part of the same cover-up involving prominent but dishonest citizens in Steamboat Rock, Ackley, Eldora and the Hardin County Greenbelt area during Iowa’s frontier days. Using re-enactors and a re-created 1880s Iowa town, The Rainsbargers is a local Hardin County true life tragedy. Including interviews with descendants of the participants, this one hour documentary has finally set the record straight about a maligned family who paid a terrible price as scapegoats for the greed of others when Hardin County was part of the “Old West”. This documentary won a Certificate of Merit, Iowa Motion Picture Awards, 1997. At 1 p.m. the film is Farming in Iowa: The Role of the Farm Wife and Iowa’s Barn Tradition Farming is the backbone of Iowa, and these two short films celebrate two important aspects of that heritage: the “farm wife” who raised a family, did the cooking, laundry, (continued on page 3)
By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Eldora is familiar territory for Julie Towne, new administrator of Greenbelt Home Care. Back to the old fishing hole, actually. You see, she used to come here with her father when he’d make his regular circuit, stocking bait suppliers around northeast Iowa. He ran a regional business out of the family hometown of Garnavillo, and he would bring the kids along on some of the trips and always leave them off at Pine Lake State Park to do some fishing while he handled business in town. She still likes fishing but now she’s come back to Eldora to take charge of the county’s public health nurse and associated services. Towne who is the new administrator at Greenbelt Home Care is a career health care professional, 13 years a registered nurse in Minnesota, Denison and most recently in Carroll Iowa. In Carroll she had worked as a public health service administrator, but she says Greenbelt’s home care component offers are a new career (continued on page 3)
Julie Towne has recently come to the head post at Greenbelt Home Care here in Hardin County. Greenbelt is the public health nurse office and an joint initiative of the city of Eldora, Hardin County and Hanson Family Hospital. She comes from a similar position in Carroll, Iowa.
Hear The Word from cover to cover By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – You can give voice to Scripture and make it heard out in the public square early next week – actually on the lawn of the courthouse. Readers are being summoned, and listeners, too. Project organizers say it is a chance to participate in the statewide Bible Reading Marathon, which began in January in Des Moines at the Statehouse and has continued through all but a couple dozen county courthouses since. The State Capitol hosted the first event in January when the Bible was originally read cover to cover in the Capitol rotunda. Then it was
proposed to do the same thing on the courthouse lawns of all 99 counties – the idea originally to have all the readings done in celebration of the 4th of July. But, only 55 counties were able to accomplish it on Independence Day. Twenty more counties have since completed and 24 were left to finish, with Hardin County one of them. Diane Nelson of New Providence is the Hardin County project captain and Sherrie Nelson (no relation) is the coordinator for Region Six of the project. You can contact her at 641-751-4194 for details and any opportunities to participate. Governor Branstad signed an official proclamation of support for the project in April.
Fareway names new Eldora manager Ryan Bjustrom is the new manager of the Eldora Fareway Grocery. He comes to the job from the Fareway in Fort Dodge where he served as an assistant manager, on station there for three years. He has actually been with the Fareway organization for fully 19 years, starting while in high school at the age of 16. He is a native of Startford Iowa. And he and his wife Amanda have sons Gavin, 11, and Dylan, 9. This marks his 8th store assignment in Iowa and Minnesota locations.
When the Hardin County organizers met with the county board of supervisors for permission to use the courthouse lawn, they indicated that it generally takes a little over 80 hours to finish the Bible cover to cover. They said the reading would not employ microphones, just a limited amount of space, a few tables, chairs and a podium. Here are the local details: Hardin County Bible Reading Marathon In front of the Hardin County Courthouse – 1215 Edgington Ave., Eldora (continued on page 3)

SHHS Homecoming
Sunday afternoon in the Park
You could taste, you could hear, and you could tour through the end of summer, courtesy of the Hardin County Historical Society and friends last weekend. The Historical Society had its annual end of summer ice cream social and this year took a little detour along the way. The activities centered up in St. Paul Lutheran Church in terms of the lunch, while just outside and across the street a group of collector and vintage car enthusiasts set up for visitors. The band which has been known by many a name is Brian Hagedon, Roger Ziesman and John Farmer and the littlest motorist and best of the car show is Ryleigh Miller of Marshalltown. And yes, the car is remote control.
There are some new wrinkles to Homecoming at South Hardin this year. Here is the schedule, and note how the coronation this year comes at approximately 7:15 the evening of Monday October 3 after the JV football game. Also note, there’s no parade this year. Check the list for some other new takes on Homecoming and a lot of old traditional ones. The game is Friday October 7 against West Marshall, starting at 7 p.m. The school does note that a few times might be subject to change.

Also included are comments by local residents about rationing and the war on the “home front”. This documentary features Ackley veterans Delbert Harken (D-Day troop transport), Woodrow Heitland (B-17 bomber ground crew), Robert Harken (bomber pilot), Bob Schultz (D-Day planning), Don Seibold (USS West Virginia battleship, battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Leyte Gulf), and Dee Seibold (Army nurse corps) and there are also offerings from Eldora veterans Raleigh King, Wendell Clarke and Marion Athus. Greenbelt begins a new chapter in health service (continued from page 1) challenge. She says he anticipates there will be a lot of similarities between here and her work in Carroll. For one thing both counties have very large elderly populations and that should make the work familiarity. She says she’s already initiated a few changes here in the Hardin County health service. She has begun putting a new emphasis on formal team approaches to tasks at Greenbelt. She says it is an initiative she thinks is being well received by staff, too. Towne says she has always known the medical field was her calling. Towne says she learned about the opening for the head job here while at a regional meeting of health care professionals. Hardin and Carroll Counties are in the same region and it was about that time that the county was looking for a replacement for Terry Terrones who had left the Hardin County post to return to a job in a hospice profession. Town says the move to Eldora works out well for family. Her husband is employed in State

Veterinary Feed Directive Guidelines Effective Jan. 1
HARDIN COUNTY – In an effort to protect human and animal health from the rise of antibiotic resistance, the Food and Drug Administration has issued new guidelines that will regulate medically important antibiotic use in animal feed. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, veterinary oversight will be required when using medically important antibiotics for treatment, prevention and control through Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD). Antibiotics classified as nonmedically important are not affected by the VFD.
Kevin
“The VFD ensures that the veterinarian and producer are using antibiotics that are medically important for therapeutic purposes, and that they are necessary and warranted,” said Chris Rademacher, ISU Extension and Outreach swine veterinarian. “Producers who want to continue to use a VFD drug must have a VFD from a licensed veterinarian that they have a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship with. This will promote more veterinary-producer interactions that will guide the decisions to use
2016-2017 season
medically important antibiotics for mass medication (feed or water).” Producers are required to keep their VFDs on file for two years. In addition, veterinarians and feed manufacturers who do not abide by the VFD regulations could face fines or the revocation of their licenses. Complete information on the Veterinary Feed Directive (AS 0011) is available through the ISU Extension Store at https:// store.extension.iastate.edu/Product/ Veterinary-Feed-Directive or at the Hardin County Extension Office.

Taking a look back at local history from previous editions of the Eldora Newspapers. Compiled by Rob Maharry.
Five years ago this week-2011 • City mayor Jim Brown has signed on to an effort undertaken by several mayors in the state of Iowa, seeking to short-circuit what appears to be plans by the U.S. Post Office to—maybe—cut service in almost 200 offices in the state. In Eldora itself, all the changes in the service have not focused on closing but have scaled back the staff here drastically and seen the routing of the mail through the Grundy Center office and only then re-circulated back to Eldora for actual delivery. Meanwhile, the offices in Whitten and Garden City have been placed on a watch list, due for more study and possible closure. • The Balvanz family threshing machine got trotted out for one last run under the family name about two weekends ago. Everything worked fine after the handiwork of a few coons was undone. The thresher and an antique tractor, a 2545 Case, both of 1928 vintage, were put to the task of threshing a couple of wagon loads of oats while family and friends looked on. The viewing will be the last for the thresher as the family has decided to put it up for sale. 10 years ago this week-2006 • A lot of national politicians from places as near as Missouri and as distant as New York seem to have developed a sudden interest in Iowa. Forty-fourth House District Republican Polly Granzow smiles and allows that all the visits are probably not about a burning desire to tour one of the pair of Hardin County ethanol plants. Yes, there might be some presidential ambitions in the mix, but she says there are some very businesslike things that come out of such little trips to the Hawkeye state. “It establishes ties to Iowa with people who could be making very big decisions affecting the state in the years to come. You may be looking at future elected officials or people appointed at the federal level in a new administration. “It is important that they have some familiarity with us here.” • The Newton racetrack that’s been so much in the news and the subject of big special foldout sections in the Des Moines Register, in fact has a very big Eldora fingerprint on it, mostly in the form of the inner ring of concrete track liner and most all the support buildings at the track’s infield. McDonald Construction of Eldora has been trekking to Newton early
in the morning since spring, one of the chief subcontractors on the project, which in total is coming to $70 million and is by far one of the more high-profile jobs of its type being done in Iowa in recent memory. 25 years ago this week- 1991 • Four new directors were elected, and officers were re-elected during the 75th annual meeting of the Hardin County Farm Bureau Tuesday night at the Boat Club in Steamboat Rock. The meeting attracted 275 members. Bill Lawless, representing Eldora township, and Charlie A.D. Haywood, Union township, were newly elected to two-year positions and Brian Krause, Buckeye township, and Leonard Penning, Grant township, were newly named to one-year positions on the Hardin Farm Bureau board. Tony Doolard of Clay Township, James Willems of Etna Township and Mike McCartney of Sherman Township were re-elected to twoyear positions. • In spite of a threat that the results of the recent bond issue election are to be contested, the Eldora-New Providence board of education, during their regular meeting Monday night, began to make plans for the construction of a new high school. “We have only received information that a protest is being planned,” said E-NP superintendent Ingvert Appel. “As far as we are concerned, the canvass has been held an the vote was confirmed at that time. We proceed on that basis.” • Work continues by interested organizations to gather documentation to present to the Iowa Department of Transportation at public hearings in November supporting one or more of the proposed four alternatives for Highway 20 as it stretches across Hardin County. 50 years ago this week- 1966 • Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Friday at 10:00 a.m. for the new nursing home being constructed by Eldora Enterprises, Inc., in the southwest section of the city. Mrs. Louemma Jensen, secretary of the group, turns the first spade of ground for the 50-bed structure. • Fire destroyed the interior of the canteen at the Iowa Training School for Boys here late Tuesday morning. Total damage was estimated at $25,000. The loss is covered by a state contingency fund. The blaze was discovered by an employee in the canteen, Mrs. Mabel Meyers, at 11:20 a.m. She had been in the building at 11 a.m. and turned the French fryer and grill on low temperature. She then left the building, returning 20 minutes later to discover flames around the two appliances. An electrical short is believed to have caused the blaze.
Letter to the Editor Supports Hillary Clinton for President To the Editor: It’s quick and easy to criticize a person in a sound bite or “snap fact”. Learning about the inaccuracies, exaggerations, and outright lies in those criticisms requires more time and effort, but it’s worth it if you want to know the truth. Before you believe all the onesided barbs against Hillary Clinton, please check out the full stories be-
hind them. One source you can use is Politifact.com, a non-partisan, Pulitzer Prize winning website. After evaluating hundreds of statements from both our presidential candidates, they rated 70 percent of Donald Trump’s statements as mostly false, false, or pants-on-fire false. For Hillary Clinton, the number was 28 percent. One more thought. If you were
to consider sinking your entire life savings into Trump businesses, you would probably look pretty deeply into their history, including the multiple bankruptcies, before investing. I hope you will look at least that deeply into the man and his history before you vote to gamble all our futures on a Trump presidency. ron neuerburg Eldora, Iowa
