Boosters fundraising for school choir By Rick Patrie News Editor SOUTH HARDIN – The formal choir robes in which south Hardin High School vocal musicians perform have seen better days. Now the local music and performing arts booster group is proposing to fit the kids out new. For several decades the South Hardin Performing Arts Boosters (formally the Music Boosters) has supported the activities of young people involved in the Performing Arts in our school districts. This group has annually awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors, has purchased instruments for the K-12 music program, and has supported teachers and students involved in the performing arts. SHPAB is currently fundraising to replace the South Hardin High School Choir Robes, all of which have exceeded their usable life. More than 100 young people sing in the South Hardin Concert Choir and they will represent the district with these new robes as they travel to festivals and contests. Although the SHHS Concert Choir received Division 1 ratings at the 2016 IHSMA Large Group Contest, they

did so wearing two different robes - those from the former ENP High School, and those from the former Hubbard-Radcliffe High School. The Boosters have already received generous donations from individuals and from the Eldora Kiwanis toward the purchase 15 of these new robes. Currently the plan is to purchase 125 robes to accommodate various sizes of students, and because at that number, the vendor will provide each student a free garment bag which will prolong the life of the robe. Individuals and groups interested in supporting the Boosters in this effort can contact President Annette Baker, Treasurer Jen Mitchell, Secretary Mary Swartz, or SHHS Vocal Music teacher Patrick Gagnon at pgagnon@southhardin.org, or 939-3421 x1458. Community members can see a sample robe at Hardin County Savings Bank in Eldora which has generously allowed a display to be housed in their lobby. Tax-deductable donations can be mailed to South Hardin High School, 1800 24th Street, Eldora, IA 50627 attn: Patrick Gagnon.

HARDIN COUNTY – The county-wide and county-focused women’s charity 100+ Women Who Care is recruiting new members and their next scheduled get acquainted event is Monday evening, October 10th at the Pine Lake Country Club in Eldora from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All women who reside or work in Hardin County are invited to join. 100+ Women Who Care Hardin County has introduced a new element to traditional local fundraising and philanthropy. In doing so it is touching other non-profits charitable efforts with a helping hand. The group is designed to make an immediate, direct, and positive effect in our county by bringing together women who care about local community causes. There is no volunteering, no telemarketing, no event planning, and no silent auction donations to solicit. The group lends a hand to local improvement efforts out of its own resources. Membership has grown to over 70 members. Members are at many different stages of life, work in different fields and already give back to their communities in their own ways,” says Carol Gilbert, Steering Committee Member. “But for one hour every four months, they’re also a team, pooling their money and votes to support a common cause.” At each meeting, members are given the opportunity to nominate a charity for consideration. Three members’ submissions are chosen, (continued on page 3)

A big chorus of Thank you Mr. Blair and Mr. Primus. The fifth grade in the Eldora-New Providence class of Patrick Gagnon show off the latest addition to the classroom. The school actually received the piano shown here from Eldora’s Don and Rosanne Primus, who had been keeping it in a storage space. Mr. Blair was Don’s late uncle and he, Blair, loved to play the instrument. Don says he suddenly thought of the school when it passed to his hands on his uncle’s death..

In tune

By Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – What better way to make the most of a fine family hand-me-down. Take it out of retirement. It wasn’t long ago Don Primus surprised Patrick Gagnon of the South Hardin/E-NP schools’ vocal music department. Gagnon teaches singing and young voices like his 5th grade need accompaniment.

Primus had the accompaniment. He had an uncle Truman Blair and Mrs. Blair – Gail – who long lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and kept an electronic piano, primarily for Mr. Blair’s use. When he passed on the family went looking for a good home for the instrument. Home became his nephew Don’s storage room here in Eldora. Don had gone to Santa Fe to move the instrument back to Iowa, and though he actually has some musical background himself, he knew

he would never truly make full use of a piano. It was then he approached Gagnon and today the instrument is at home again, this time in the E-NP elementary school – a gift of the Primus’. Gagnon says it’s a premium piece of musical technology and the instrument’s moved to the top of the ‘use’ list in his classroom. The Primus also threw in a saxophone for the school. You can help the music department, too. See the story above left for how.

That time of the year again Eldora Rotary and its award winning spook house

by Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – Need another good scaring? If you do, an Internet-based survey of scary places now confirms you can’t do any better than Eldora where the Rotary has a good scare for you. Come on out to the old city hospital. You will get a good scaring – scared silly in fact – and the price of admission ensures that a lot of good causes will be funded over the course of the next year. Add to that, you will get to meet some interesting people. Like this guy to the right who has become the poster boy for just a little bit spooky. He and folks like him helped the Rotary win a contest conducted on the web for scariest Halloween fun houses in all of Iowa. Besides, if you don’t come out to the Haunted Hospital, this guy could be coming out to your house to find out why. So show up and support Rotary and Halloween. It was about four years ago the group first saw potential in Halloween and Rotary moved into the empty wing of the one time Eldora City Hospital. The long corridors and wealth of small rooms was just what Halloween called for. They began fashioning a Haunted House which has grown every year

and as it has grown, it has provided funds to a host of community betterment projects. And now, it is October again. According to Marc Anderson with Rotary, there is plenty of fright left in the season, October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 from 7-11 p.m. each night. “We still occupy the east wing of the old hospital, located at 2413 Edgington Avenue (across from Kum & Go). “We will continue to allow the use of flashlights from 7-8 p.m. for children or anyone who needs it. Improvements this year include: Completely redesigned haunt. Little looks like it did last year. Lots of new props and special effects Widened hallways to allow wheelchair access throughout the haunt. It is always a huge crowd draw, and the Rotary said even before opening night it routinely has more than 500 people following the event on Facebook and website www. EldoraHauntedHospital.com. Proceeds from the haunted hospital have gone to Dorothy’s Sr Center, Eldora-New Providence PTO, Eldora EMS, Eldora Firefighters, Eldora Police Department, Eldora Public Library, Greenbelt Home Care’s Christmas Cheer program, the Hardin County Food Shelf, and the South Hardin High School Performing Arts Boosters.

Him again

You gotta like the guy. For one thing, he’s an award winner now. Yes, the Eldora Rotary was cited by an internet survey of spook house lovers, cited for running the best one in Iowa. All the money goes to good causes and you get to meet the most interesting people.

The harvest is coming in and there are two events left at the farm museum.

Season finales at Farm Museum

By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Another season almost in the books for the Hardin County Farm Museum. The site on the north side of Eldora is looking forward to its Saturday, October 1 Fall Harvest Festival. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The harvest festival is always a chance for volunteers with the site to show off their skills bringing in a

crop with the tools and techniques of three generations ago. That means harvesting the corn, but it also means a big meal in the barn at 11 a.m. and lots of other activities out around the grounds. It is all free, and you can find demonstrations using vintage equipment, picking and shelling, stalk shredding and plowing. The 2016 fest also promises some blacksmithing demonstrations, rope making, the return of the petting

zoo, wagon rides around the grounds and a lot of things for the little kids too. The meal is pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, pie and ice cream, with the proceeds all going to helping the museum cause. The October 1 date is the second to the last on this summer’s calendar. The museum also has its family barn dance set for 7 to 10:30 p.m. on October 8. Supper will be served after 6 p.m.

At the end of all the presentations, the attendees vote, ballots are counted, and a winner is announced. The women then write their $100 checks to the selected charity. “The meetings are an exercise in “awesome efficiency,” says Kathy Enslin of Ackley, who works as a consultant for School Administrators of Iowa and signed up as soon as she read about the group in the local paper. Since April, 2013, 100+ Women Who Care has donated over $84,400 to Hardin County charitable organizations. “Meanwhile, membership continues to grow each year,” adds Gilbert, “which means our impact becomes even more significant.” 100 Women Who Care is not a national organization, but instead simply became a good idea that has taken root in 400 chapters all over the world. The 100 WHO CARE ALLIANCE is a networking organization for those spearheading chapters around the world.

Business & Professional DeNeui family earns Heritage Farm recognition Directory (EDITOR NOTE: This story ran in MidAmerica Publishing’s Grundy Center paper but touches on the DeNeui family of Eldora whose farm is in Grundy County) By: ROB MAHARRY The Grundy Register GRUNDY COUNTY- Each year, families from across the state of Iowa are recognized at the state fair for both century farms (in the family for at least 100 years) and heritage farms (150 years). The DeNeui family received a heritage farm

recognition, and current landowners Don and Carolyn De Neui spoke with The Grundy Register about the experience earlier this week. Though the DeNeuis now live in Eldora, their land is located in northwestern Grundy County between Wellsburg and Ackley. It was first settled by Johannes and Frauke DeNeui, who immigrated to Iowa from Germany in 1865 (when land was selling for $4.50 an acre) and eventually settled in the area after first arriving in Cedar Falls.

The land was then passed down through multiple generations. Last year, they made the decision to put all of the land into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a federal program in which farmers agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve environmental health and quality in exchange for a yearly rental payment. On CRP land, the native grasses grow in an attempt to lessen erosion and preserve the

ground. Although they both grew up in the area (Don on the farm in Shiloh Township and Carolyn in Eldora) Mr. and Mrs. DeNeui both worked in schools around Iowa for most of their professional careers, and Mr. DeNeui used the GI Bill after serving during the Korean War to finish his education at what is now the University of Northern Iowa. He taught at Rockwell City for decades, and she was an administrative assistant. Throughout that time, the

farm stayed close to their hearts, and they moved back to the area in 1994. Along with Don’s sister Iona (DeNeui) Yoder and her husband Alan, the family has a total of five children who will inherit the acres, and many of the family members were on hand last month in Des Moines for the recognition ceremony. Though they may not be as connected to the farm as those who first settled it, Don and Carolyn are hopeful that it will always stay in the family.

AREA – Owing to recent heavy rains that left lots of water on the trails, the 44th Annual Juvenile Diabetes Trail Ride, which historically has generated a lot of local interest here in Hardin County, has been rescheduled to Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9 in rural Clarksville. When Butch Freeseman’s son Rodney was 1 ½, the boy was diagnosed with diabetes. Soon after, in 1972, the elder Freeseman, of Allison, started the annual trail ride to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “The water’s just too high,” Freeseman said. “It was just impossible to have it this coming weekend.” The trail ride starts at 11 a.m., sharp on Saturday at the Mr. and Mrs. Terry Engel residence, 27389 180th Street, Clarksville and crosses farm ground in Clarksville and surrounding areas, near the Shell Rock River. Riders over age 13 pay $5 a day; 13 and under may ride for no donation if they choose. Saturday’s ride includes a 5:307:30 p.m., free-will donation pork loin potluck supper. Bring a potluck dish. Following supper, at 8 p.m., will be a dance at Doc’s Restaurant Lounge to the band, Borderline. There will also be an auction, including four processed halves of hog, and 50/50 cash raffle. (Need not be present to win if including phone number.) At some point during the ride, Rodney Freeseman will give an educational update on the state of diabetes today, Butch Freeseman said. The Cowboy Church performance will unroll at 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by a prompt 11 a.m. departure on horseback. This is to be Butch’s last year coordinating the trail ride. A commemorative story appeared in our Sept. 8 issue.

Tigers spoil A-P Homecoming By JOHN JENSEN Mid-America Publishing PARKERSBURG — South Hardin senior Dane Butler stopped Aplington-Parkersburg running back Sam Thorn short of the goal line of the game’s final play as the Tigers edged Aplington-Parkersburg in a back-and-forth battle at Ed Thomas Field in Parkersburg. The Tigers (3-2 overall, 2-1 in Class 2A, District 3) led 21-7 in the second half yet needed a touchdown and two-point conversion in overtime just to extend the game. They took the lead in the second overtime period and then stuffed A-P’s attempt to win the game with a conversion run. “Dane Butler is having a tremendous senior season and came up and made a big play, a big fill at the end,” South Hardin coach Barry Scott said. “At some point one team was going to do that and one team wasn’t, so I was glad we came out on top,” Scott said. “I’m proud of those boys for hanging in there, (they showed) a lot of resiliency. We certainly have an unbelievable amount of respect for A-P. It certainly is quite a place to get a win.” South Hardin’s comeback came after Aplington-Parkersburg rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to tie the score in the third quarter. The Falcons took the lead in overtime but could not get a key stop. “I thought the effort was good, especially in the second half,” Aplington-Parkersburg coach Alex Pollock said. “We just made too many mistakes and that’s been our deal for the whole year. At some point it’s going to click, we’re kind of running out of chances here, but we did fight hard.” The Falcons (2-3 overall, 1-2 in District 3) had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation only to be turned back without a chance to make a winning play. Sophomore quarterback Carter Cuvelier completed a 12-yard pass to Chase Kling at the 16-yard-line with four seconds left. As time ran off the clock, he heaved the ball to the end zone where the intended receiver was interfered with, giving A-P one untimed down from its 9-yard line. Whistles blew as South Hardin jumped offsides on Jacob Abbas’ game-winning field goal attempt. The Falcons lined up to go for a winning touchdown, only

to be called for a penalty of its own when an offensive lineman left the line of scrimmage early. Officials conferred for more than a minute before determining that the penalty against the Falcons counted as their play. “We were under the impression that, no matter what, there was still one untimed down because there was a defensive penalty,” Pollock said. “(The official) said because the next penalty was on us, that was the untimed down. I’ll have to look at (the rule book) … I don’t know for sure. If that’s the case, that’s on me.” APLINGTON-PARKERBURG LOST despite out-gaining the Tigers by 169 yards. A blocked punt, fumble and botched coverage on a third-and-long play, however, set up South Hardin first-half touchdowns. “When you make that many mistakes you’re going to get tripped up,” Pollock said. “We’re not the type of team that can come out flat right now, we’ve got to have that energy for a full game and we have not had that the whole year. We’re continuing to try to figure out what makes us click.” South Hardin won the game with a passing game that had not been firing on all cylinders through the first four games of the season. Junior quarterback Kolten Rewoldt completed 5-of-10 passes for 131 yards and a pair of overtime touchdown passes to his twin brother Kevin Rewoldt. “Our passing game has been statistically stagnant and it hurt us in the first four games, but we weren’t going to give up on it and we knew it would come around,” Scott said. “We had catchable balls and we didn’t drop too many tonight, which was a good deal.” The passing game was key, as the Tigers ran for just 101 yards on 43 carries. Logan Spindler paced SH with 39 yards while Jeff Thompson ran for 37 yards. A-P was fairly balanced, rushing for 291 yards and throwing for 110. Halfback Sam Thorn led the Falcons with 141 yards while fullback Lincoln Johnson added 59 yards and wingbacks Riley Barrett and Kling collected 59 and 54 yards, respectively. Cuvelier completed 10-of-20 passes for 110 yards and was not intercepted.

THE FALCONS TOOK AN early lead after marching 68 yards on the opening drive of the game, with Lincoln Johnson going the final three yards for the touchdown and Abbas kicking the point after. South Hardin tied the game eight minutes later after a blocked punt set up a 23yard drive capped by Ryan Duchane’s six-yard scoring run. Michael Halsey tied the game with his pointafter kick. The game remained tied until the waning minutes of the first half. A 78-yard Kolten Rewoldt-to-Ty Cook pass on third-and-long from inside the Tiger 20 set up Thompson’s 1-yard run that game South Hardin the lead. Moments later Thompson, now playing defense, stripped the ball from an Aplington-Parkersburg receiver and returned it to the Falcon 22. One play later Spindler took the ball to the end zone on a counter play, giving the Tigers a 21-7 halftime cushion. A-P scored the first two times it had the ball in the second half, with Cuvelier’s conversion pass to Kling tying the score with 1 minute, 31 seconds to go in the third quarter. The Falcons struck first in overtime on a Kling five-yard scoring run and Cuvelier conversion pass to Kling. South Hardin tied it as the Rewoldt brothers hooked up on a nine-yard scoring pass and ensuring conversion pass. The Rewoldts hooked up again on the second play of the second overtime, again from nine yards out. Halsey’s PAT kick gave the Tigers a 36-29 lead. A-P found the end zone on Thorn’s third touchdown of the night and went for the win, coming up short. “That was a no-brainer for us,” Pollock said of the two-point attempt. “It’s not just a quick decision, a lot of thought goes into that decision.” The Falcons play three of their final four regular-season games on the road, including Friday night at oncebeaten Roland-Story. South Hardin plays three of its final four games at home, including Friday against Dike-New Hartford.
