From the Desk of . . . Dr. Dean Cook, EBF Superintendent This year the EBF School District, along with many Iowa school districts, is transitioning to a new leadership mentoring model. The model is focused on creating opportunities for teachers to coach their peers in bettering classroom instruction techniques. The Teacher Leadership and Compensation (TLC) System was built by the state of Iowa on the philosophy that improving student learning requires developing the instruction students receive every day. Empowering highly effective teachers with leadership opportunities and higher pay will create overall improvement in the delivery of instruction – hence higher student achievement. In the past, many of these teachers have tried to mentor on the side or when they had time. The TLC grant has allowed them to work as mentors in a fulltime capacity. The TLC system seeks to: x Attract promising candidates to the teaching profession by offering competitive starting salaries and offering short- and long-term professional development and leadership opportunities. x Retain effective teachers by providing enhanced career opportunities. x Promote collaboration by developing and supporting opportunities for teachers in schools and school districts statewide to learn from each other. x Reward professional growth and effective teaching by providing pathways for career opportunities that come with increased leadership responsibilities and involve increased compensation. x Improve student achievement by strengthening instruction. (http://www.heartlandaea.org/instructional-services/tlc/)
This year, EBF welcomes April Glosser, Lindy Hammes, Sharon Lanphier, and Angie Koebke into their new positions as instructional strategists. Their immediate impact on education in our district has been very positive, and we are very excited by the warm response they are receiving from staff. “I have enjoyed seeing the unique teaching styles of so many teachers, and witnessing the learning that is occurring throughout the district. It has provided a chance for me to offer on the spot professional development and support, and to guide our first and second year teachers, as well as to set goals and work with more experienced teachers,” said April Glosser. High school Instructional Strategist Angie Koebke echoes these same thoughts, “I love going into classrooms and seeing all the innovative teaching that is occurring. Being able to discuss the learning taking place and share ideas with other teachers is one of the best things about this job. A quote that has been repeated in conferences I have attended is, ‘We don't get better in isolation.’ I am very happy to say that our staff values collaboration, and I am pleased to be a part of this process.” EBF’s goal is to encourage teacher leadership, empower staff, and improve student achievement. The TLC grant has allowed EBF to create a culture centered on empowering leadership opportunity. Because of the TLC grant and our new positions, each of our teachers now has the support of an instructional strategist, and as a district we are better equipped to promote student learning. - Dr. Cook

“Just Before the Battle Mother--A Visit from a Civil War Soldier Blakesburg Historical Presentation - Sunday, October 16
The program is free and open to the public. Light snacks will be served. The Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society, with funding from Humanities Iowa*, will host Civil War historian O.J. Fargo for a program at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 16th at the Blakesburg Elementary School Cafeteria. Entitled “Just Before the Battle Mother--A Visit from a Civil War Soldier, Mr. Fargo dresses in full Union Army regalia and presents in first person an individual Iowa soldier’s Civil War experiences. After Fargo provides a brief overview of Iowa's Civil War involvement, the audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in dialogue with the soldier, who stays in character as he talks about his involvement in the war. Fargo’s program will be followed by a BHPS presentation on one of Blakesburg’s Civil War soldiers, Captain Samuel A. Swiggett. Married to the daughter of Cyrus VanCleve, one of Blakesburg’s co-founders, Swiggett enlisted in the ranks in September 1862. As a member of the 36th Iowa, he would be captured at Mark's Mill in April, 1864, and would spend the remainder of the war in prison camps. In 1895, Swiggett, using his personal experiences as his story's essence, published a book about his prison life entitled "The Bright Side of Prison Life". On display will be Swiggett's original family photo album as well as other Civil War artifacts provided by Mr. Fargo and by BHPS. Fargo will also bring a searchable electronic Civil War roster of men who served in and from Iowa so participants can search for ancestors who served. *Humanities Iowa is a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and a cultural resource for Iowans since 1971.

The last few years we have had an awesome turnout at the Eddyville Elementary Winter Concert. Because of the great attendance and increased enrollment at the Eddyville Elementary, we are anticipating that we will not have the space in the gym or the parking lot to accommodate everyone; to make sure the entire community can enjoy the concert, we have made some changes. At Eddyville Elementary, PS-2nd grade will perform at our winter concert, and 3rd6th grade will perform at a spring concert. Next year, we will have 3rd-6th perform at our winter concert and PS-2nd perform at a spring concert. In addition, we will add the 5th and 6th grade band to the winter concert. The high school gym will still be the location of the Eddyville Elementary concerts.

We serve and pass very well making for the other team many times not able to set up an effective offense, but we are not utilizing that advantage. This is a tough loss and hopefully the girls will rally behind this loss to make themselves better. We will focus on skill improvement at the net this week and mentally prepare for our next match September 26. ~Coach Gladys Genskow

This was a fun game to boost some confidence in the players. There were less hitting errors and a more relaxed team enjoying the win. One aspect I am proud of is that the girls stayed focused in a relaxed way and got the job done tonight. We didn't make silly mistakes and took advantage of the opportunities. It is good to have this kind of win this time of the season plus going into a tough tournament this weekend at Newton. We will have a couple of days off this week and get right back into competition this weekend against 4A class schools. ~Coach Gladys Genskow

We continue to pass the ball well and blocking is improving. Overall we played good as a team, and we were making better decisions with the ball as each match progressed. We will still focus on termination and seeing the court better with controlling what we are able to control throughout the match. As we build upon the positive aspects, we will keep the focus one match at a time with our next match on Tuesday, October 4, against Knoxville.
Pay It Forward Tuesday at Fremont Elementary
Tuesday, November 1, 2016 Thursday, November 3, 2016 4:00 to 8:00 PM
Make time to read, read, read with your kids!!!
In 5th and 6th grade library, we are reading the book “Pay It Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde. This book is based on a true story. The Pay It Forward movement started out as an extra credit assignment for a middle school social studies class. The assignment was for them to think of a way to make the world a better place to live. With that assignment, one student came up with the Pay It Forward movement that has gone around the world. We would like to start our own Pay It Forward movement here at the Fremont Elementary School. We are calling it Pay It Forward Tuesdays. For the months of October through February, we are asking students to bring any spare change that they might have to school EVERY Tuesday. With this money, we will buy books at the Pay It Forward Book Fair. Half of the books will be for our students at Fremont, and the other half of the books will be given to other children in the area. 4

Reminder: grant opportunity to help small Iowa communities with abandoned commercial properties DES MOINES-- Funding is still available to Iowa communities with populations of 5,000 or smaller to inspect and properly remove asbestos from abandoned commercial buildings. The funds, from the DNR’s Derelict Building Grant Program, allow eligible communities to investigate the amount of asbestos present in a building. The funding also allows them to determine the physical characteristics and stability of these structures by completing structural engineering assessments, and to abate identified asbestos issues. “If a building collapses and the presence of asbestos is unknown, it can increase the economic burden on the community,” said the DNR’s Scott Flagg. “In addition, a building’s appearance may not reveal the actual condition of the structure. Building assessments can assist communities determine how best to address an abandoned building.” The Derelict Building Grant Program provides small communities and rural counties financial assistance for abandoned commercial and public structures, which can improve the appearance of their streets, revitalize local economies and alleviate the environmental concerns these buildings can pose. Projects selected may apply for funding in 2017 for additional program-related tasks. For more information and to obtain an application on the Derelict Building Grant Program, contact Scott Flagg at 515-725-8318 or Scott.Flagg@dnr.iowa.gov. Applications will be accepted until funds are expended. 8

When to Keep a Sick Child Home: Reference Guide for Parents
Parent Volunteers Sought for SIAC Committee The school improvement advisory committee (SIAC) is seeking parent volunteers that can assist the school in looking at data and creating a parent survey. Volunteers are needed from each elementary building along with the Jr/Sr. High. If you are interested, please contact Curt Johnston at 641-969-4288 or curt.johnston@rocketsk12.org The first SIAC meeting will be held Oct. 17th at 6pm in the HS library. Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can be difficult. Please use the following guidelines to help you in your decision. Be sure to call your child’s school to let them know why your child is absent and then send the appropriate note when your child returns to school. 1. Fever: student must be fever-free (<100.4 Fahrenheit) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin). 2. Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if the child acts or looks ill. Student must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning. 3. Persistent nasal congestion, reddened eyes, sore throat, cough, or headaches that disrupt the student’s learning or pose a risk of disease transmission to others. 4. Unexplained skin eruptions or rashes. When in doubt, consult your child’s doctor before sending your child to school. 5. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) appearing as redness of the conjunctiva (lining of eye/ eyelid) with or without pus drainage from eye and/ or swelling. Student should not return to school until they have been examined and treated. 6. Any other communicable illnesses in which you have been advised to remain out of school until cleared to return by the county health department or your child’s doctor (i.e. chicken pox, scabies, influenza, whooping cough, tuberculosis, measles, impetigo, etc.) 7. Any other health condition that in the school nurses judgment is of concern for the others health and well-being and that of the child. Hunters who need to satisfy the hunter education requirement can search for and sign up for a course at www.iowadnr.gov/huntered. Prospective students can see which courses or field days are near them; how many seats are available for the class or if the class is full and a waiting list is available. There is also a map showing the location along with the instructor’s name, a course overview and any special instructions. Iowa law requires all hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972 to satisfactorily complete a hunter education course in order to purchase a license. Children as young as 11 may enroll in the course, but their certificate of completion will not become valid until their 12th birthday. Each year, around 12,000 students complete hunter education in Iowa.

M S - Above and at right, the high school band performs their show for family and friends and then each band member gives someone the opportunity to shadow them for an encore performance. Congratulations to the EBF Junior High Marching Band (at left and below) on their 6th consecutive 1st place finish at Centerville Pancake Days! This year the band is led by drum major Abby Hanson. The band also marched in competition at Oktoberfest in Ottumwa on October 1 (see the next issue of The Rocket for a follow-up). On Friday October 21st, the band will be performing at half time of the last home game, and will be shadowing the high school band following their performance. ~Info/Photos submitted by Director Dezarae Fairchild
