Eldora United Fund 2017 kicks off

Roundhouse Halloween

NEW PROVIDENCE – The annual costume parade and carnival, a fall tradition which began over 65 years ago in New Providence will be held at the Roundhouse on Saturday, October 29. The costume parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the carnival to follow. The tradition began at the New Providence Community School prior to 1949 as a fundraiser for the school. Costumed children lined up in their classrooms and walked to the Roundhouse to parade around the gymnasium for the community. A king and queen were chosen using ears of corn as the voting token. The corn was then sold with the proceeds used for school projects. When the school started having a winter homecoming celebration, the king and queen coronation was moved to that event and the fall carnival instead crowned an eighth grade prince and princess with a kindergarten boy and girl serving as crown bearers. After the parade, the student council members sponsored carnival games for the children and parents alike. This annual tradition continued until the New Providence School merged with Eldora in 1980. The event was reprised in 1992 with eight age groups beginning with 0-2 year-olds and ending with an adult category. Cash prizes are given. Three judges select the top four entries in each age group. The carnival games, manned by 4-H and school groups, always include ring toss, cake walk, fish pond, putting green, treats in the straw and prizes. Pizza, walking tacos, homemade pie, popcorn and other snacks are available. Hundreds of dollars of prizes donated by area merchants will be raffled off during the costume parade. Tickets may be purchased that evening. The proceeds from the evening are used to help fund Roundhouse projects. Admission is free so bring the whole family. Come in costume or come to enjoy the creativity of others.

The dollars you dedicate to the Fund are helping more people than we can begin to count! The good that flows from your contribution is reflected in the faces and hearts of those in need. “As our community continues to build for the future, we need to help those less fortunate to rebuild their lives and futures, so they can be counted on as good family and community members for years to come. Supervisors approve economic development dollars By: Rob Maharry Staff writer ELDORA-The Hardin County Board of Supervisors approved an amendment that will provide additional funding to economic development groups in the county as well as a recommendation to approve the construction of a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO), among other items, during Wednesday morning’s regular meeting. The amendment will add $7,500 to the county’s contribution to economic development, bringing the total annual amount up to $37,500 from $30,000 with funding coming from the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST). The economic development alliances in Iowa Falls and Ackley will receive the funding. A motion to approve the amendment passed 2-1, with chairman Lance Granzow voting no. After a brief public hearing, the board unanimously voted in favor of a recommendation to approve the construction of a new CAFO in Buckeye Township at the Zilske Finisher Farm. Hardin County Emergency

Management Coordinator Roxanne Warnell gave the quarterly report for her department during the meeting and discussed topics such as mitigation grants, emergency preparedness plans for child care facilities as mandated by a new law, a recent mass casualty simulation and changes that needed to be made in the emergency management plan on a yearly basis. A motion to accept the report passed unanimously. The board held a conference call with Bob Josten of the Dorsey and Whitney law firm of Des Moines to discuss its urban renewal plan and some of the regulations relating to it. After speaking with Josten for around 10 minutes, a motion to retain the services of Dorsey and Whitney was approved unanimously. The board continued to ponder the future of a county owned property, which includes a house, located next to the Emergency Operations Center in Eldora, but no official decisions were made. Possible courses of action include selling the property altogether or salvaging and refurbishing individual items from the home, and the supervisors agreed to do more research and gather more information before taking action.

Ken Loyd and Cally. Cally is in the Hall of Fame.

Union man and his famous best friend by Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY— The dog of a Union man has been named to the 2016 Animal Hall of Fame. Cally, is an eight year old Malinois owned by Ken and Pauline Lloyd of Union, and joined two other animals in the honor. Ken is a paralyzed veteran who has teamed with the dog to open up a lot of possibilities for himself. The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) and Merck Animal Health honored three extraordinary animals with 2016 Animal Hall of Fame awards for their bravery, companionship and professional contributions to people and the community. Fifty-eight animals from across Iowa have been inducted into the Animal Hall of Fame since its inception 19 years ago, including dogs, cats and horses. The awards were given in three categories, Companion, Hero and Professional. In the Hero Category, Cally was cited as a remarkable service dog and loyal companion for Mr. Lloyd. Despite having cataracts in both eyes and surgery on one, Cally enhances Mr. Lloyd’s life in multiple ways. She helps with routine activities, such as picking things up off the floor, opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off and even

fetching a soda from the fridge. Cally also serves as an ambassador for the organization Paralyzed Veterans of America, providing an example of the benefits of having a service dog to other veterans and their families. Cally was nominated by Dr. Rachel Allbaugh of Iowa State University’s Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. The added 2016 Iowa Hall of Fame winners are: Companion Category: Flyer, a 12 year old Morgan horse owned by Glenda Farrier of Atlantic. Flyer was chosen for the Iowa Animal Hall of Fame as an incredible example of the humananimal bond. Glenda and Flyer had an immediate bond when they first met when Flyer was just six weeks old and chose Glenda as her owner. As a young horse, Flyer injured her vertebrae and pelvis after being chased over a tall fence by a stray dog. Over the next several years as Glenda suffered with her own health issues, she was committed to Flyer’s recovery. As they both worked through their respective illnesses, they helped each other heal. Flyer is now a confident driving horse. Glenda says, “Our connection is not of a horse and her owner. We are kindred spirits, sisters, and soul mates.” Flyer was nominated by Dr. Jodie Pettit of Audubon-Manning

Veterinary Clinic. Professional Category: Gracie, a six year old Golden Retriever owned by Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Davenport. Her caregiver and director is Jane Marsh-Johnson. Gracie is specially trained as part of the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog Program. She is the only Iowa dog in the national organization. Not only does she provide ministry and comfort to the 400 kids at the Davenport school, she also provides her services around the entire state and beyond. Gracie has been deployed 9 times during major emergencies including the 2012 Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, CT, the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire in Prescott, AZ where 19 firefighters died and most recently the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL. When not on deployment, Gracie spends her days listening to kids read at school and the library; visiting nursing and hospice homes; and helping veterans who are experiencing PTSD. She is also the official crisis response dog for the City of Davenport police and fire departments. Gracie was nominated by Dr. Laura Bahns of Kimberly Crest Veterinary Hospital in Davenport.

Construction forces polling change

By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – There has been a last minute change in the location for voting for residents of the Eldora/Pleasant/Providence/ Union voting precinct. That includes residents in those townships and cities within them, including Whitten, New Providence, and

Union. They will vote at the Emergency Operations Center at 1031 Edgington Avenue in Eldora. They had been scheduled to vote at the Eldora city hall, but that is changed due to the continuing street construction around the municipal building. In fact, the change came late enough that legal notices you find

in this paper still list the prior voting spot – but again, to repeat the polling place for those townships will be in the Emergency Operations Center building. Use the north entrance to enter. Around the county the following are polling places for the November 8 vote. Alden/Buckeye Precinct votes

STEAMBOAT ROCK SCHOOLHOUSE – Steamboat Rock Schoolhouse Committee has connections. The old community building fills up on a regular basis with entertainment ranging from the sacred, to holiday specials, to, in times past, professional wrestling. Now they are back with a distinctly un-solumn fan favorite. Donkey basketball arrives Saturday, October 29, at 7 p.m. in the Schoolhouse gym. “Participating will be area locals riding real, live donkeys! Wilder than a rodeo, funnier than a circus!” First game will be Lithopolis Smoke Eaters (Fire Department) vs

Presbyterian Church and the second game is Steam Boat Rockers (Baptist Church) vs HeeHaw Honky Tonks (Saddle Club). During intermission they are offering free rides for the kids. A concession stand will be available selling popcorn, nachos & cheese, candy bars, pop and water. Mama’s Diner in the Schoolhouse will be open for those that want to eat prior to the games. “Dairyland Donkey Basketball show is 1 ½ hours of wholesome, side-splitting, donkey-loving, family fun tournament action! Spectators will be entertained by donkey riders made up of family, friends, and community members riding in two

elimination games and one final championship showdown. Each donkey has his own talents! The donkeys get the best of care and each one is specially selected to run, buck or duck!” Advance tickets of $7 are available from Dawn’s Treasures, Travel Now, City Hall, and Rock Stop in Steamboat Rock. They are also available from Schoolhouse Committee members Craig Babcock, Dawn Doolaard, Marcia Frerichs, and Bruce Stahl. Tickets at the door are $10. Pre-schoolers are free. The last donkeyball game was March 2, 2013 so the show was long overdue, organizers say.

Charges in worker comp case

ELDORA —A former Iowa state trooper has been accused by state authorities of improperly receiving workers’ compensation payments. The Iowa Public Safety Department said Thursday that 38-year-old Lance Below turned himself in Wednesday to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office. Below was released without bail. Authorities say Below improperly received workers’ compensation while working for the patrol and for another employer, without notifying his workers’ compensation provider that he was being paid for the second

job in addition to that with the state agency. This would have reduced his compensation. Court records say Below, of Hubbard, was overpaid nearly $27,000. Below had hurt an ankle in the line of duty back in July of 2012. That was not disputed. When in the course of his rehabilitation he returned to duty with the patrol, he is alleged to have neglected to informed all parties of his continuing outside additional work for an private business.

IA pheasant season opens Saturday DIVING- The Tigers’ Lexi Ryan dives along the back line and stretches to bump the volleyball as teammates Paige Harrell (17) and Hanna VanderWilt (7) looks on during regional net play last Wednesday. South Hardin was swept by Iowa Falls-Alden 25-14, 25-10, 25-22 in the post-season opener.

Tigers suffer another short post-season

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor IOWA FALLS- The run of early exits from post-season play by the South Hardin volleyball team continued with a straight set loss to Iowa Falls-Alden here last Wednesday. The Tigers were swept by the Cadets 25-14, 25-10, 25-22 during a Class 3A, Region 4 quarterfinal match. The one-and-done post-season setback was South Hardin’s eighth time in the past nine net campaigns. Since 2008, the one opening round victory came in 2013. Slow starts were costly for the Tigers Wednesday as Iowa Falls-Alden bolted to leads of 8-0 in the first set, 10-4 in game two and 6-0 in the third set. “You can’t get starts like we did

tonight. We just had a lot of unforced errors and things snowballed,” stated South Hardin coach Greg Salvo. “It is a frustrating end, especially after the way we played so well last Saturday (Woodward-Granger tournament). I was hoping that would carry over, but it didn’t,” he added. After two quick set losses, the Tigers attempted to extend the match and season with a competitive third game. Down 15-12, South Hardin scored six unanswered points with Dru Balvanz at the backline. Highlighting the run were a back-to-back block and then kill by Nina Priske. Iowa Falls-Alden pulled within 18-17 on two Grace Renaud kills. The Tigers regained the momentum to lead 2219, but then fell flat as the Cadets netted the final six points. Grace Juhl had a service ace during the run and

Lauren Keane the matching ending kill. The Cadets delivered a quick punch, scoring the first eight points of game one with five on kills. South Hardin never made a run as the leads were 12-2, 14-6 and 20-12 before closing on a 5-1 spurt. A 10-0 scoring spree sparked IF-A in the second set, ballooning the advantage to 23-7. Gabrielle Vierkandt landed two service aces during the run with kills for Keane, Alivia Gerstein and Hannah Redmond. Priske’s six kills led the Tigers’ attack with five for Lexi Ryan, JoJo Keahey four and Dru Balvanz three to go with 10 assists. Hanna VanderWilt added eight assists and Ryan collected a dozen digs. The loss closed the campaign at 9-21 for the Tigers.

Renaud clubbed a match-high nine kills with seven each for Gerstein and Jackie Timm, and six for Keane. Renaud and Gerstein were both 22-of-23 hitting, while Keane had 22 assists. Vierkandt had three service aces, going 21-of-22 with Gerstein 19-of-19 with one ace. Grace Juhl collected 16 digs, Keane 14 and Redmond 13. Iowa Falls-Alden improved to 2112 and plays second-ranked DikeNew Hartford in a regional semi-final match tonight (Tuesday) in Iowa Falls at 7 p.m. The Wolverines whipped West Marshall 25-13, 25-10, 25-10 last Wednesday. The IF-A – Dike-NH winner advances to the 2A, Region 4 final against the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura – Clarion-Goldfield winner Monday (Oct. 31) in Hampton.

DES MOINES- Iowa’s pheasant hunting tradition will begin another chapter on October 29, when nearly 60,000 hunters will pursue ringnecks during the season opening weekend in field’s across the state. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources annual August roadside survey predicts Iowa pheasant hunters can expect to have good hunting this fall, and likely more company in the field. The optimistic mood is a natural outcome of five consecutive years of higher population surveys and hunter harvests. The survey found an average of 21 pheasants per 30 mile route statewide, with higher counts coming from counties cross the state diagonally from northwest to southeast. The statewide average in 2015 was 24 pheasants per route. “At this point, it appears much of our corn and beans will be out of the fields by the opener, which will concentrate birds to grass areas and make hunters happy. If we have good weather, I think we could see a bump in hunter numbers and birds harvested,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa DNR. Bogenschutz said he has noticed more birds near field edges and along the roads as the crops have been coming out. “I’ve been seeing some birds around on my way in to the office and have been getting a few phone calls from around the state from people also seeing birds,” he said. “The birds are here, we need hunters to return.” Iowa’s pheasant population could sustain a harvest of 500,000 roosters, but it will not reach that level until there are 90,000 hunters afield. In 2015, some 55,000 hunters harvested 270,000 Iowa roosters. Hunters can read the August roadside survey, review hunting regulations, buy a license and find a place to hunt online at www.iowadnr.gov/ hunting. Regulations Unchanged Regulations covering pheasant hunting are unchanged from

last year – there is a limit of three roosters per day, 12 roosters in possession, and hunters are required to wear one piece of solid blaze orange clothing. If hunting public land, be sure to check if steel shot is required. If cleaning the birds in the field, be sure to leave the head, fully feathered wing or leg attach while transporting the bird home. Quail population highest in 27 years Iowa’s quail population is its highest since 1989 after experiencing increases again across south central and southwest Iowa this year. “This is the best opportunity we’ve had to hunt quail in 27 years,” Bogenschutz said. “For anyone who has ever had an interest in quail or who hasn’t hunting quail recently, this is the year to go.” In 1989, 80,000 hunters harvested 400,000 quail. In 2015, 10,000 hunters shot 28,000 quail. Quail population information is also included in the August roadside survey for hunters wanting to give quail hunting a try. Quail season begins October 29.

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor CONRAD- Victory never tasted so sweet. After eight straight weeks of defeats, the BCLUW football team celebrated in the season finale here Friday by beating MFL-Mar-Mac, 33-22 during Class 1A, District 3 play. Knotted 14-all at intermission, the Comets outscored the visitors 19-8 in the second half to wrap-up the season at 1-6 in district play and 1-8 overall. The win also snapped a 13-game losing skid overall with the last win over North Tama in September of 2015. “It was so fun to put it all together tonight,” said BCLUW coach Anthony Jagr. “If we would have played the second half in other games this season like we did tonight, we would have had more wins. I’m just happy for the kids and proud of the team,” he added. Clay Silver and Caleb Engle powered the BCLUW

offense. Silver had two touchdowns and 116 total yards – a team-high 73 rushing and 43 receiving on three receptions. Engle rushed for two short touchdowns and 54 yards. Engle scored the go-ahead six-pointer on a two-yard run in the third quarter and sealed the deal with a oneyard touchdown run in the fourth. State Qualifying Cross Country

VanderWilt takes 10th with late push

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor GARNER- A late push propelled South Hardin sophomore Jacob VanderWilt to a top 10 placing and a state meet berth during a Class 2A State Qualifier cross country meet here Thursday. The meet’s top 15 individual placewinners advance to the state show and VanderWilt with a strong final 1.1 miles climbed his way into that select group. VanderWilt, who was counted 16th at both the one and two-mile markers, was clocked in 17:33. “Jacob had his best race of the season and probably the best race of his career,” proclaimed South Hardin coach Mike Olson. “Our gameplan was to be a couple three places ahead of where we wanted to finish and hold on, but this also works. The course was a fast course and I was worried about the sprint at the end, but Jacob just let it go,” he added. The Class 2A boys will toe the starting line at 1:30 p.m. as one of eight races at the state meet. Saturday’s (Oct. 29) state cross country meet will be held on the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge. by Scott Bierle Sports Editor CEDAR FALLS- Seniors Grant Baker and Ian Showers along with sophomore Caleb Silver earned state meet berths for the BCLUW boys’ cross country team at a Class 1A State Qualifier meet here Thursday. The threesome posted top 15 placings to secure the berths led by a lofty third for Baker, top 10 for Showers at eighth and Silver 12th. Baker covered the course at Birdsall Park in 17:21 with times of 17:49 for Showers and 17:51 for Silver. The excitement of three Comets running another day took the sting out of a hard-luck fourth placing in the team race for BCLUW. The Comets missed advancing the team to state by one point, scoring 90 to third place Starmont’s 89. “The guys are handling it better than me,” stated BCLUW coach Donna Fiscus, on the team’s fourth placing. “It hurts to be that close, but we made a good run and have three guys going individually.” Unranked Hudson captured the team crown at 76 points followed by No. 13 Denver at 85 and fifth-ranked Starmont 89. Dunkerton was right on BCLUW’s heels at 92 points. The fourth and fifth runners for the 12th-ranked Comets were Neifer Ralston 31st at 18:55 and Blake Mann in 19:50 for 53rd. The state showing will be a second for both Baker and Showers, who also qualified as individuals last fall. The Class 1A boys will be the eighth and final race at Saturday’s (Oct. 29) state meet with a race time of 2:30 p.m. State will be contest on

the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge. “Grant is running with a lot of confidence right now and that helped him today. Ian had another very good race. We count on him being in the top 10. Caleb was a surprise to most people, but not to me. He has been building to this,” said Fiscus on the three state qualifiers. Denver’s Curren Matthias was the individual medalist with a 17:04 running followed by Don Bosco’s Zach Nie at 17:19. The BCLUW girls rounded up 467 points for 17th in a field of 19 teams. Samantha Schleisman was the lone Comet in the upper half of the 148-runner field, ending 63rd with a time of 24:15. Skylar Nelson was next at 104th with Milena Ralston 114th, Payton Pekarek 125th and Haley McDonald 132nd. Season finale brings 27-13 setback for South Hardin

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORA- The late season skid for the South Hardin football team continued with a 27-13 loss to Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in the regular season finale here Friday. The Class 2A, District 2 setback was a fourth straight for the Tigers to close the gridiron campaign 2-5 in the district and 3-6 overall. The visiting Raiders’ first three possessions found the end zone and built a 21-0 halftime cushion. A 19yard scoring strike from Hunter McWhirter to Brady Kemp capped a 10-play first possession followed by two short touchdowns runs for Blake Coughenour. The game’s first play from scrimmage saw South Hardin throw an interception and again the offense struggled. For the sixth time this fall the Tigers were checked to under 200 total yards – generating 161 Friday. Coughenour first found paydirt from two-yards to cap a nine-play march and then the senior running back fueled a three-play 64-yard drive, scoring from four after he took a screen pass 44 yards on the drive’s first play and ran 16 on the second. The opening 24-minutes came to an end with the Raiders at SH’s 22 and after two C-M-B touchdowns were called back for penalties on the drive. Coughenour produced 282 of CM-B’s 421 yards with 120 rushing on 22 tries and 162 receiving on six catches. The Raiders stretched the advantage to 27-0 to open the second half

as Coughenour scored six on another two-yard run just 1:59 into the third quarter. “We got behind the eight-ball early, but behind a good group of seniors we made a couple of drives in the second half. We just kept grinding and scored,” said South Hardin coach Barry Scott. South Hardin’s offense finally then found some footing and answered that score with the first of two Jeff Thompson touchdowns. Thompson scored from six-yards to finish an 11-play march that included a midfield fake punt pass of 23 yards from Ty Cook to Hunter Nessa and later Thompson battled for two-yards on a fourth-and-one. Thompson’s second TD and eighth of the fall was a three-yard blast and again capped an 11-play march late in the fourth period. Cook had a 17yard scramble, Micheal Halsey rambled 13 yards and Cook connected with Brandon Meints for 11 yards on the drive. Thompson rushed for 54 yards on 18 carries, Cook hit six passes for 70 yards and Meints had three grabs for 29 yards. Linebackers Ryland Duchane and Dane Butler headlined the Tigers’ tackle chart with nine solos for Duchane to go with eight solos and two assists for Butler. Alex Gustafson added seven tackles with six unassisted. Tyrell Todd picked a pass in the end zone, denying a C-M-B score. The win jumped the Raiders to third in the district at 4-3 and finished 4-5 overall. The game also marked the end of Collins-MaxwellBaxter football as C-M and Baxter

are splitting.

It was in August the Wright County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously and OK’d a development agreement opening the door to Prestage Foods of Iowa building a $240 million pork processing plant near Eagle Grove. During the past summer hearings had taken place for the public. “We are pleased that the Wright County Board of Supervisors granted us approval to move forward with this new, state of the art packing plant,” says Ron Prestage, DVM. The plant will be a $43 million boost to the payroll in Wright County and will provide economic benefits to surrounding counties as well. More than 900 new full-time jobs will be created with the lowest paid workers beginning at more than $37,000 per year plus full benefits. Average wages at the plant are expected to be more than $47,000. “We have been raising hogs in Iowa for more than a decade and plan to buy 40 percent of the hogs for the plant from local, independent farmers,” says Prestage. “This will help these farmers cut back on transportation costs and keeps the value in the state.” The company says it is looking forward to completing the design for the plant, selecting businesses to

The development will the processing of 10,000 hogs a day, a big impact on the marketing of hogs in central Iowa, in addition to adding at least 922 jobs to the Wright and surrounding region. It will mean a payroll each year of about $43 million. One of the key items the company would consider was the availability of labor in the area. Meanwhile, Mason City objectors had expressed concerns about the plant resulting in environmental degradation, concern about the local schools being overwhelmed and concerns about the plants presence creating even more incentive to construction of added confinement hog finishing facilities in the Mason City area.

traffic patterns. Its laborshed. Most counties in Iowa have already undertaken what are termed Laborshed studies with the Workforce Development Agency. The studies uncover established commuting patterns and survey the county for a good indication of just how many people there are willing to drive and how far they will consider driving in order to find work. Mitchell says that the analysis done in Franklin County a couple of years ago tends to show that, although Eldora is within the reasonable distance for a commute to work in Hampton, it ism realistically, right on the far end of reasonable. So, when the nod for the plant went to Wright County, implications for Hardin County workers dissolved away. At the same time, Mitchell says that no one assumes that any new facility of Prestage’s size would simply hire all its help from within the home area. This type of development is of such a scale it would almost certainly involve people moving to the area in pursuit of the jobs. The development is a large number of jobs in any case. Roughly

By Rick Patrie News Editor FRANKLIN COUNTY – For those following the events in Mason City this spring, you watched a community essentially say no thanks to about a thousand industrial jobs. Prestage Foods was talking about taking advantage of the huge hog production capacity here in Iowa, proposing to build a massive packing plant in the Cerro Gordo County city. What Mason City said no to, folks in Wright County would welcome, and along the way Hardin County’s neighbor to the north Franklin County, actively courted. Though Hardin County never figured in the location mix, Franklin County’s efforts were near enough to stir curiosity about splillover employment impacts here. Karen Mitchell is executive director of the Franklin County development association in Hampton and back this spring when she was investigating possibilities for Hampton, she told the Eldora Newspapers that when business recruiters are talking about jobs and commuting distances, economic developers already had a good idea of the nature of the county’s labor

Youth leadership opportunities

A busy schedule faces kids involved in pork production effort

IOWA – The Iowa Pork Producers Association annually invites the state’s young people to participate in a competition to represent the association and the industry as ambassadors for nearly 60 years. The first Iowa Pork Queen was selected in 1960. The contest runner up became the Iowa Pork Princess. IPPA added another contest in 2006 when it began selecting a Premier Pork Youth Ambassador. For 2016, these separate contests have been combined into one and IPPA will select a queen and two ambassadors. The youth team will attend and assist with various events, in-state and out-of-state pork promotions and educational activities during a year-long reign. Events include the Iowa State Fair and World Pork Expo. The 2017 Iowa Pork Youth Leadership Team competition will be held during the Iowa Pork Congress in Des Moines in January. involved, and it’s a big undertaking to have it all done, but it’s well worth it to have that level of consumer trust,” Jarrod said, adding that it’s just one more thing he can do to be a good representative of the pork industry. Shari said that she thinks her husband has always been a positive role model and representative of the pork industry. “Since I’ve known him, I’ve noticed that people always seem to gravitate towards Jarrod,” she said. “Throughout the many pork committees he’s been involved in, he’s always been a positive role model; he’s very relatable, he has a passion for what he does. I think we need more representatives like him in the industry, and I’m very proud of him for everything he’s accomplished.” Jarrod, who met the other three competitors during a dinner in Chicago, said that each farmer is knowledgeable, driven and passionate about the industry “They’re all good people, and they would all make great representatives of the pork industry,” he said. “Whether I win the competition or not, I get to wake up everyday and do something that I love and that I have a passion for. No day is ever the same for us, and we face new challenges every day, but I get to be around my family every day and we get to work together towards the same goal of producing a safe, quality product, and that’s what it’s all about in the end.” EDITOR’S NOTE: Since this article was originally published, the National Pork Board has named their winner for “America’s Pig Farmer of the Year.” This year’s honor went to Brad Greenway of Mitchell, South Dakota.

Here is one young swine showman whose name came up and up and up for ribbons at the state fair. Dylan Madden is actually pictured here at the Hardin County Fair where the journey to Des Moines began. The results here are from the State Fair. IOWA – Eighty food pantries across the state shared in about 44,000pounds of boneless pork loins from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. The deliveries were made in June and July, with Iowa Select Farms refrigerated semi s travelling almost 1,600 miles to 54 different towns and 82 food pantries. Postings on social media told the story of each food pantry as part of the project. In all 808 cases of pork loins were distributed. A free 16-page booklet about proper storage handling and preparation accompanies each loin. There ware recipes that will help stretch each donation into several meals. The loins were about 4.5 pounds each and feed a three-ounce serving to 24 people. Doing the math shows about 233,000 servings to recipients.
