Whopper of a harvest is rolling in County looking toward exceptional yields in both beans and corn By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – The harvest has all the signs of being a near record one. Prices are still down, but they have not fallen precipitously during the harvest season as some had feared, and if you have to have low prices, observers say it is great to have a corn crop that is flirting with last years record 199.5 bushels per acre here in the county. And the bean crop is even more of a surprise. “We are hearing much higher numbers than any of us expected,” reports Darwin Miller with Iowa State University Extension’s offices in Iowa Falls. Miller says that you can likely credit the rains in August for the bean’s sprint to the finish. The moisture was right on time and helped make an exceptional summer for a crop that, he said, had early on seemed to stall out at 8 to ten growth – then recovered, and finally finished with the fifty-plus and lower -sixty bushel per acre reports – even 70 bushel per acre reports – extension was hearing from some farmers around the area. 2016’s corn has last year’s record benchmarked to live up to. Whether the averages can match 2015 remains to be seen, but Miller says all signs are for a very positive Hardin County corn crop in 2016,

too. He says that local observations on the corn crop show farmers in the New Providence and Hubbard areas coming out a bit ahead of their neighbors this growing season. Particularly when compared to their counterparts in the north of the county. Excess rains in the north probably accounted for the difference, that and the fact that the more southerly areas are by nature better drained. Miller said that farmers in the county were sometimes in the field harvesting corn when the crop was a little wetter than they might have preferred. But a spate of dry weather (until just the last few days) made grain as a whole dry enough that farmers saved on drying costs this year. Miller says that prices often trend to lows during the harvest season most years, but they didn’t reach the $2-plus ranges some had feared. Things slowed in the fields after the last spate of rains – 1.61 inches in Eldora, an inch in Iowa Falls and almost two inches over around Ackley. With a view covering the state, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Weather Service had more observations as of Monday morning this week. (Find the report on page 2 of this edition.)
Hardin County Extension says it is hearing reports which suggest an exceptionally good soybean harvest in Hardin County this year, and much the same for the corn crop, though it might not quite meet the high benchmark set for corn last year.
Realtors organization estimates continued softening in area land values By Rick Patrie News Editor AREA – Iowa ‘average’ farmland value was $6,486 an acre, according to a survey from the Iowa Chapter of Realtors Land Institute. That was as of September of this year. By comparison, the average value
statewide in September 2013 had been estimated at $8,750 an acre. Here in central Iowa, the MarchSeptember estimated decline was thought to be about 3 percent. The institute report, which comes out twice a year, also noted that the estimated decline in the state as a
whole had been 3.7 percent, again across the focus period between March and September. And the bi-annual report, from professionals in the real estate and lending business, confirms a continuing downward trend attributed to commodity declines.
Of course, individual farm ground value is local, and depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is timing, but the Land Institute report remains one of the more quoted when the subject is farmland prices (continued on page 3)
Big early vote emerging
By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – There is still the traditional day to vote. But in significant numbers, local folks are trickling and sometimes swarming into the polls well ahead of election day. The Hardin County Auditors office is poll central, at least until November 8 when the rest of the voting booths around the county open up for business. At the county auditor’s office, they said last
Friday, there had already been 2,869 ‘absentee’ ballots cast or mailed in to the courthouse by mid day. Of course, most of those ballots weren’t absentee in the old fashioned sense. They were cast very much in person. Voting early and absentee has gotten so popular that nowadays it’s fifty-fifty statewide, between those who come early and those who wait for election day. Gone is the old image of determined folk braving blizzards in early November, shivering in line as they wait their turn in the
At AGWSR helm By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Yet another new face in a local school district principal’s chair. Jason Gabel came to work July 1 in the AGWSR schools Wellsburg Center. He is the principal at the Wellsburg facility after the retirement of Sheryl Arends at the end of the last school term. Gabel brings more to education too. His wife Kelly is teaching just across the county in the South Hardin Middle School in Hubbard. Otherwise, he has a sister in the profession, but his generation is otherwise the first in the field for the family. Gabel came to the district here from Martin County West Schools in Sherburn, Minnesota where he taught junior high social studies for
six years. He holds a bachelors degree in social studies from the University of northern Iowa and his masters and specialist degrees from Minnesota State. At his last post he served as the technology integration specialist in the district and also was a peer reviewer. His wife Kelly teaches special education in the South Hardin District. This part of Iowa is relatively new to the family. The closest contact was at UNI in his undergraduate work. He said he was pointed in the education direction from a young age, a kid who liked school as a student too. Gabel works in the AGWSR middle school center in Wellsburg. The district elementary and high school is in Ackley
voting booth. Today people vote almost at their whim. And the Auditor’s office has been hosting them in the rotunda for a couple of weeks. It is getting late, but here again is a review of how you go about casting your vote early. There are some stipulations.
Absentee Voting by Mail
Registered voters may still request an absentee ballot to be sent to them by mail. You must complete an absentee ballot request form and return the original, signed form to your
county auditor. The request form does not need to be witnessed or notarized. Someone who will be 18 years old by the date of an upcoming election may request an absentee ballot if he or she is pre-registered to vote. The request form must be received in the county auditor’s office by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the election. If the request is received so late that is (continued on page 4)
USDA $6.9 Million loan to Hubbard Coop Telephone by Rick Patrie News Editor HUBBARD – Some indication of the investment the country faces in making all of rural America broadband-accessible comes in a recent local announcement. Hubbard is being extended a nearly $7 million loan to help the telephone company enhance communications options in the area served by the Hubbard Cooperative Telephone Association. Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa, recently announced that Hubbard Cooperative Telephone Association is receiving a $6,950,000 USDA loan to enhanced services and offer higher broadband speeds to rural
customers of the coop. The figure suggests the scale of the effort which is now a national priority in rural America. Approval had actually come a while back and work making installations in the phone company central office have already been under way, along with work at the homes of individual subscribers. The project is technology and hardware-heavy but the phone company in Hubbard says the substantial $7 million loan (of which they expect to use only about $5 and a half million to complete the project) is actually among the smaller ones of its kind. Rural communication companies around the nation are working to comply
with an FCC desire that the whole of rural America have broadband service available. In general, broadband refers to telecommunication in which a wide band of frequencies is available to transmit information. Because a wide band of frequencies is available, information can be sent on many different channels simultaneously, allowing more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time. Systems experts compare it to more lanes on a highway allowing more cars to travel on it at the same time. The Hubbard coop serves about 700 households, including about (continued on page 3)

– both on the upswing and the down. The survey is based on sales and assessments, observations from about 150 real estate brokers, bankers, appraisers and other farm professionals. Iowa’s farmland values dropped 8.7 percent over the past year and have fallen about 25 percent from peaks in 2013, a new survey shows.
Again, here in the central Iowa reporting district, which include Hardin County the decline between March and September was 3 percent. In March of this year, here in the central Iowa district, high quality land was estimated at $9,594, in September $9,219. Medium quality cropland dropped from an estimated $6,894 in March to Septembers $6,716, and low quality land moved from $4,330 to $4,265. All nine crop reporting districts showed year-over-year declines, the
survey Wednesday showed, ranging from 6.7 percent in northeast Iowa to 11.7 percent in southwest Iowa. The report on land values out of the Chicago Federal Reserve reported in August that farmland values in Iowa had dropped 6 percent over the past year. All the reports cite the decline in commodity prices as a key factor. U.S. farm income this year is expected to be 42 percent lower than the peak in 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Timber, most likely for recreational purposes was the one exception to the downward trend, the report showed. Timber acres climbed between 4.5 percent and 5.1 percent in south-central and southeast Iowa. One trend supporting farmland values is that there are fewer farms for sale, and this does tend to slow the downward push on prices.
1,375 people within a roughly 89 square mile territory. Expectation is that the work will be completed by the end of December and switchovers for customers completing shortly after. “We are pleased to be assisting in this project that will provide new opportunities for people and businesses in rural Iowa,” Menner said. “Broadband has helped rural communities across the country gain access to improved health care, open the door to educational services and expand business and social opportunities.” USDA Rural Development funds will be used to construct more than 140 miles of buried fiber and install upgraded electronic systems and equipment for expanded broadband service in and around the City of Hubbard located in Hardin County.
Since 2009, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $350 million to help bring new and improved telecommunications and broadband services to hundreds of rural businesses and thousands of rural Iowans. USDA Rural Development’s funding continues to have a dramatic impact on rural communities across Iowa. During the past seven years, USDA Rural Development has invested more than $4 billion on essential public facilities, small and emerging businesses, water and sewer systems, and housing opportunities for Iowa families. This past year USDA Rural Development’s assistance in Iowa helped create or retain more than 1,000 jobs, aided 2,400 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 60 communities as they made improvements to their facilities, services and infrastructure.

$6,000 to SH grad thru Hoover Library project
WEST BRANCH – Three students, including one from Hardin County walked away with thousands of dollars in college scholarships after Presentation Day at the Herbert Hoover Presidential LibraryMuseum Fourteen finalists, all high school seniors in the Uncommon Student Awards program participated in the project sponsored annually by the Hoover Presidential Foundation. Among the top three were Jordyn Daggs-Olson of South Hardin High School. The students applied for the program as high school juniors back in March. The Foundation selected 14 finalists from across Iowa to participate in the program. Each student developed a philanthropic program of their own design and worked on it over the summer. They returned last Saturday to present their results. Each student was awarded $1,000 for their efforts. Three were selected by a panel of judges for an additional $5,000 scholarship award. Jordyn Daggs-Olson of South Hardin High School in Eldora earned a $5,000 scholarship for her project, ‘Investing in Iowa’s Future by Learning to Treasure Its
Past.’ “I created an experiential curriculum designed for the third graders at Eldora-New Providence Elementary,” Daggs-Olson said. The program focuses on life in rural Iowa during the 1920s and 30s, with specific focus on education, agriculture and daily life. The students have combined classroom lessons with a day of applied experiences at the Hardin County Farm Museum. Among the three were also: Kyle Hoffman of Muscatine was one of the three. His project was titled, ‘Catapults for Kids and Classrooms.’ “I raised $11,000 to fund my development of STEM curriculum and kits for Muscatine’s 12 elementary/middle- schools,” Hoffman said. The kits included highquality ‘hands-on’ reusable activities to promote deep understanding of key concepts during traditional classes and after school programs. “I’ve already trained teachers on using the kits and arranged for ongoing ‘STEM Fridays’ with after school programs,” he added. The third scholarship award went to Mickey Sloat of Davenport Central High School in Davenport. Her program, ‘Don’t Upstage Yourself,’ involved introducing
students to theatre at a young age to instill higher confidence, selfexpression and success later in life. “Don’t Upstage Yourself is an afterschool enrichment program that uses theatre games, improv and putting on a play to encourage kids to develop a love of the arts, public speaking, and, most importantly, themselves,” said Sloat. In addition, Lucia Wagner, Iowa City High School, was recognized as the Mariah Becker award winner for her project, ‘Free Pantry.’ This award is in memory of Mariah Becker, a member of the Hoover Uncommon Student Award Class of 2000. She was a student at the University of Iowa in 2002 when she lost a long and courageous battle with cancer. Miss Wagner received a plaque and her name was added to a permanent display at the LibraryThe Hoover Presidential Foundation is a private nonprofit organization for the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum and Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch, Iowa. The Foundation fosters the collection, interpretation and preservation of historical resources relating to the life, ideas, values and times of Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States.
FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR WINNERS: Leslie Hoover-Lauble (2nd from left) presents $5,000 awards to (L to R) Kyle Hoffmann, Jordyn Daggs-Olson and Mickey Sloat. Eldora City CounCil SpECial CounCil MEEting CondEnSEd oCtobEr 24, 2016 -- 6:00 p.M. eldora City Council met in Special Session with Mayor Bob Jeske presiding to discuss a proposal on the Hospital. Council members Melody Hoy, Jack Brekke, Bob John, Cindy Johns and Dave Mitchell were present. also present were City administrator Bruce Bierma, Chandra Kyte, Cory Larson and ambulance staff, newspaper staff and citizens. Mayor Jeske asked for comments from the Council members. each member gave their concerns on the Hospital. Council member Hoy thought the City should look at the Hospital and see if it could be remodeled for the eMS. She thought we should look at both options of remodeling the Hospital and building a new building. Council members Johns, Brekke, Mitchell and John all thought that if the Hospital was remodeled, the eMS would out grow it and more work would be needed on it later on, it would not be energy efficient, the layout would not work, and during the remodel where would the eMS work out of and how would the remodel effect McFarland and greenbelt Home Care. Mayor Jeske asked for a motion on the Hospital and Council member Hoy motioned that the City look at the Hospital and have Cannon Moss Brygger architects of Sioux City, Ia do a study of the building for a cost of around $10,000.00 that the City would pay for. after motioned by Council member Hoy there was no second given and the motion died. It was then left with the City to look at what the eMS could afford and what they needed for a new eMS building. There being no further business Mayor Jeske asked for a motion to adjourn. Council member Mitchell so moved, meeting adjourned at 7:17 p.m. Bob Jeske, Mayor aTTeST: Chandra Kyte (Ledger – Nov. 1, 2016)

Grundy girls rally for 5-set win over W-G
WOODWARD- A come-frombehind five-set victory was celebrated by the Grundy Center volleyball team winning 25-16, 23-25, 1525, 25-22, 16-14 over WoodwardGranger during a Class 2A, Region 4 semi-final match here Thursday. The Spartans rallied from a 14-10 deficit in the fifth and deciding set to defeat the ninth-ranked Hawks, after battling back from a 22-16 deficit in the fourth game. The wild win improved Grundy to 24-16 and ousted W-G at 31-8. The Spartans also downed the Hawks in a regional semi-final last season with a three-set sweep. Junior Landry Luhring led the Spartans’ attack with 16 kills on 41-of-45 hitting followed by Kylie Willis 14 on 37-of-39 hitting and Brooke Flater 11, with 47 assists for Sydney Mathews. Emmy Kracht was 16-of-19 serving with two of the team’s four service aces. Luhring had 27 digs and Kyah Luhring 24. W-G senior Olivia McCune produced match-high totals of 21 kills on 44-of-54 hitting and seven service aces, going 23-of-25. Grundy Center now meets No. 5 Tri-Center tonight (Tuesday) at West Des Moines Valley. Game time is 7 p.m. T-C defeated Des Moines Christian Thursday in four games and improved to a lofty 32-1. Grundy Center is one of six teams from the North Iowa Cedar League Conference to advance to regional finals. Along with the Spartans in 2A, No. 3 Sumner-Fredericksburg plays West Branch at Center Point and No. 10 Waterloo Columbus meets No. 4 Lake Mills at Nashua, while in 1A, No. 2 Hudson plays Lamoni at Bondurant tonight (Tuesday). Class 3A finals were held Monday with No. 2 Dike-New Hartford meeting Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at Hampton, and No. 1 Union High playing Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at Montezuma.
(continued from page 11) ing period came with 17-seconds showing with another scramble by Ehrhardt good for 21 yards. The game’s first punt then came moments into the second quarter followed by what may have been the contest’s breaking point. After a 47 yard punt by Roelfs left the Warriors at their own four, Ehrhardt dropped back into the end zone on first down and rifled a deep pass to Sylvester, who snagged the pigskin at mid-field and raced to paydirt, capping a 76yard pass play. Another two-point run for Ehrhardt and the host’s led, 30-14. Central Elkader added six-pointers on the next two possessions with a 46-yard pass from Ehrhardt to Ted Hilgerson and then Ehrhardt bolted 11-yards. The two teams divided four touchdowns in the second half as Eilderts scored twice for AGWSR – first on a 66-yard kickoff return and then a five-yard run in the game’s closing minutes. For Elkader, Hilgerson blasted three-yards and scored on a 23-yard pass from Ehrhardt. “They handled us really well at the line of scrimmage and that created a lot of problems,” said Koop. “If we can’t control the line of scrimmage the way we’re used to, it makes it tough on us.” The explosive Warriors wasted little time with the football as six of the eight scoring drives on the 80-yard field lasted four or fewer plays. Sylvester had 125 receiving yards on five catches with 83 yards on four grabs for Josh Cummer. Hilgerson added 50 rushing yards and was credited with 10 solo tackles and another 13 assists. Stubbe’s 69 yards on 13 rushes led the Cougars with 51 for Eilderts, 45 for Roelfs and 39 for Tyler Rose. The team’s passing was just 4-of-9 for 23 yards. AGWSR entered the game without starting QB Nathan Karsjens
after he broke his right hand in the regular season finale one week earlier and then Roelfs went down with a knee injury late in the first half Friday. Eilderts and freshman Titan Opperman manned the position the final two-plus quarters. Stubbe had six solos, two assists and a picked pass for the defense with five solos and three assists for Meinders and Rose. The loss capped the first fall of Eight-Player football at 7-3 for the Cougars. Central Elkader, 8-2, will host 9-1 Don Bosco Friday in a quarterfinal contest. Elkader defeated the then top-ranked Dons, 44-34 during the regular season. Don Bosco, fourth-ranked, routed ONE-ON-ONE- AGWSR running back Liam Stubbe carries the No. 1 Turkey Valley, 75-24 in the football as a Central Elkader defender looks to make the tackle playoff’s first-round Friday. during post-season play Friday.

explosive Warriors race past Cougars
by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELKADER- An early high-paced scoring parade turned one-sided and vaulted Central Elkader to a 58-26 victory over the AGWSR football team during Eight-Player first-round playoff action here Friday. After the two teams traded touchdowns on the game’s first four possessions, only the host Warriors continued the hectic scoring spree. Actually, seventh-ranked Central Elkader found the end zone on their first six possessions and owned a commanding 42-14 cushion with 1:34 remaining before the break. “I would say there was one word that sums up our three losses – speed,” said AGWSR head coach James Koop. “We have the strength and size that can match any team. But they’re faster than us. We get to state track in the 400 and 800s, and they’re qualifying in the 100 and 200s. I have not problem with our effort, we always come and put it all out on the field, but speed is the difference,” he added. The speedy and shifty Derek Ehrhardt sparked the Warriors as he had a hand in seven of the winner’s eight touchdowns – four passing and three rushing. Central Elkader
amassed 497 yards of offense and signal caller had 425 with 279 passing and 147 rushing. Previewing the post-season game Koop noted containing Ehrhadt was key. “He (Ehrhardt) is a phenomenal athletic. Even if we had someone in the right spot, he could get by us. “ Central Elkader opened the barrage of touchdowns with a four-yard flip from Ehrhardt to Nick Sylvester deep in the corner of the end zone just 2:03 into the first period. AGWSR countered with a nineplay drive – all on the ground and capped with Liam Stubbe finding running room off-tackle for a 37yard dash. Both team’s two-point rushes were good and were knotted 8-all. The Warriors quickly regained the lead on a three-play march with Ehrhardt sprinting the final 31-yards. He added the two-run run. The Cougars answered with an 11-play effort that ended with a oneyard blast for Mason Eilderts. The two-point failed and AGWSR was down 16-14 at the 1:25 mark in the first. The drive included an 11-yard run for quarterback Aaron Roelfs and a 12-yard pass from Roelfs to Stubbe. The game’s fifth TD of the open(continued on page 10)

IF-A/AGWSR’s Fisher medals at state XC meet by Scott Bierle Sports Editor FORT DODGE- A career-best clocking carried Iowa Falls-Alden/ AGWSR sophomore Aubrie Fisher to a medal placing at the Iowa High School State Cross Country Championships here Saturday. Fisher posted a top 15 medal stand placing of 11th in the Class 3A girls’ race. Additional area runners at the state show were sophomore Jacob VanderWilt of South Hardin, who placed 75th in the boys’ Class 2A race, and BCLUW’s trio of seniors Grant Baker and Ian Showers, and sophomore Caleb Silver in the Class 1A boys’ field. Fisher, listed No. 24 in the latest individual state rankings, covered the Lakeside Golf Course in a swift 19-minutes, 24-seconds. The run bettered her previous best of 19:40
set at the state qualifying meet 10days ago, where she took sixth. Earlier in the week Fisher noted a top 30 placing was the goal, but the dream was to medal. She just missed the top 10 by one-second with Grinnell’s Mary Blanchard 10th at 19:23. The Class 3A individual champion was freshman Adrianna Katcher of Center Point-Urbana with a 13-second win over the 140-runner field at 18:27. Fisher was also a state qualifier as a freshman and her numbers were 65th in 20:45. Vander Wilt posted the 75th placing in a field of 140 runners and booked a clocking of 18:04. The results had mixed reactions according to South Hardin coach Mike Olson. “Jacob was disappointed, which is probably good, but I’m satisfied. He now has the experience to come back here and do better. It is

Reece won the Garner State Qualifier where Vander Wilt took 10th. Baker collected a top 30 placing and Silver finished in the first 50 for the Comets. Baker’s time of 17:32 was good for 29th out of 138-runners and Silver hit the finish line 46th at 17:47. Showers ended 79th at 18:20. The 1A meet medalist was North Union junior Riley Bauer with a run-away time of 16:09. Second was Jerry Jorgenson of Treynor at 16:32.
