Success Will Continue For Cardinal Runners

The Leader • Aug. 22 Season Preview

GHV Cross-Country coach Jeff Short is no doubt wondering what is in store for his teams this season. The Cardinal boys have a very tough act to follow after winning the Class 2A Team Title last fall. His girls’ squad will have a different look this year as GHV has severed ties with West Hancock, resulting in the Cardinals moving

down to compete in Class 2A. The Cardinal boys may have lost their top competitor from a year ago, but the expectations are still very high with eight experienced runners contending for a spot on the varsity roster. Sophomore Reese Smith is the top returner from last season after his fifth place finish in the state championship race. Joining Smith as state championship competitors are seniors Logan Dalbeck, Derek Brown and

Austin Siegrist along with junior Ray Cataldo. Dalbeck, Cataldo and Brown placed 13th, 28th and 35th respectively in the state title race while Siegrist placed 84th. In addition, Smith, Dalbeck, Cataldo and Brown were first team all-conference runners on GHV’s TIC championship team while Siegrist was a second team performer. The Cardinals feature plenty of depth on the squad with Mason Wirtz, Andrew Schreur and Nathan Larson also

earning letters in 2015. The Cardinal girls’ team may not have mirrored the achievement of the boys, but that squad also had plenty of experience and potential returning this season. The Cards surprised a few squads with their first place finish in the TIC West race with sophomore Nicole Upmeyer earning first team all-conference honors. Rebekah Larson and Hannah Wellik also finished strong at the Con-

l a u t t a i r o g n s n o C

ference meet, bringing home second team all-conference medals. Completing the list of letter winners for the girls’ team are Rachel Sokol and Emma Whelan. Coach Short noted that as always the runners showed great dedication over the summer, logging plenty of miles with the goal of repeating past success. The two squads will open the season on August 30 in action at the Newman Cross-Country meet.

The Leader • Sept. 7

Expectations were high for the state champion GHV boys’ crosscountry team as they opened the season at Newman on Tuesday. The Cardinal boys did not disappoint as GHV cruised to the team title at the Knight Invitational. The Cards easily outscored runner-up Mason City by 18 points on the way to the trophy. Reece Smith opened his season with an individual title, winning the race with a time of 16:17. Logan Dalbeck finished third for GHV in 16:52 and Ray Cataldo placed fifth in 17:14. Also running for the Cardinal varsity were Mason Wirtz (34th, 19:16) and Tyler Obermann (64th, 20:15). Cardinal coach Jeff Short coml mented, “The team ran very well for the first meet of the year! It tis always fun to see where we are starting the year out as far as times go, and both Coach Albertson and I are very pleased with the results.” The Cardinals have been well represented in junior-varsity races over the past several years and Tuesday’s race at Newman followed that trend. Running for the GHV JV squad were Andy Schreur (second, 19:43), Dalton Kelly (third,

19:57), Luke Brown (fourth, 20:01), Nathan Larson (sixth, 20:08), Lucas Rayhons (10th, 20:11), Matthew Heinemann (19th, 21:20), Austin Case (21st, 21:26), Dalton Hawe (22nd, 21:32), Andrew Dornbier (44th, 22:39), Drew Furst (45th, 22:45), Patrick Carew (48th, 22:51), Sam Childress (54th, 23:15), Jordan Upmeyer (56th, 23:21), Seth Miller (72nd, 24:20), McKinley Hawe (75th, 24:46), Spencer Formanek (76th, 24:48), Austin Mohlis (81st, 25:03), Luke Hansen (84th, 25:14), Derek Neuberger (92nd, 26:59) and Isaac Bell (95th, 27:38). After opening the season a week earlier looking like the toprated 2A Cross-Country team, GHV coach Jeff Short elected to allow his junior varsity boys’ squad a chance to see what they could do at the Belmond CrossCountry Meet. The Cardinals turned in a respectable performance placing sixth overall in the nine-team field. “We have a very big meet coming up this week so we decided to rest the top five boys at Belmond,” noted Short. “The next five runners really stepped it up to fill their shoes and ran well on a very hot day.” GHV’s team placing was somewhat lower than expected as two of the varsity runners were unable to complete the race due to injury. Comprising the Cardinal varsity roster at Belmond were Andy Schruer (18th, 19:28), Nathan Larson (24th, 19:43), Mason Wirtz (35th, 20:44), Luke Brown (37th, 21:05) and Lucas Rayhons (44th, 21:39). The Cardinals always bring several junior varsity runners to meet and Tuesday’s meet at Belmond followed that pattern. Competing in the JV race were Matt Heinemann (21:56), Dalton

Smith, Dalbeck Lead Cards at Ballard The Leader • Sept. 21

It may be a long bus ride, but GHV cross-country coach Jeff Short likes taking the Cardinal runners to Huxley each year. The meet is always a very competitive event that features many of the top runners from central Iowa. The Cardinal coach views this race as a great way to see how his teams measure up against strong programs. Gilbert proved to be the team to beat at the Ballard meet as they finished in first place with 42 points. Nodaway Valley came in second with 63 points followed by GHV with 67 points. Reece Smith and Logan Dalbeck made strong statements against some great runners as the Cardinal duo placed first and second. Smith won the individual medal in 16:50 while Dalbeck was close behind with a time of 17:03. Ray Cataldo also made a good showing with his 11th place finish in 17:53. Completing the team score were Austin Siegrist (23rd, 18:34) and Derek Brown (30th, 18:52). Completing the Cardinal varsity roster were Andy Schreur (49th, 20:03) and Nathan Larson (57th, 20:53). “The boys ran very well at Ballard against some of the best competition in the state,” noted Short. “It takes running against good competition at this point in the season to determine where you’re at and we

feel pretty good after this meet.” Junior varsity racers at Ballard on Monday included Tyler Obermann (20:06), Lucas Rayhons (20:40), Luke Brown (20:44), Austin Case (21:22), Dalton Hawe (21:35), Matt Heinemann (21:56), Andrew Dornbier (22:52), Patrick Carew (23:16), Drew Furst (23:32), Sam Childress (24:40), Jordan Upmeyer (24:40), Austin Mohlis (24:41), Luke Hansen (24:48), Seth Miller (25:57), Braden Hess (25:58), McKinley Hawe (26:19), Keegan Clark (26:33), Isaac Bell (28:33)

GHV Boys Win Humboldt Race The Leader • Sept. 28

GHV cross-country coach Jeff Short has come to expect winning efforts from his boys’ squad and the Cardinals did not disappoint at Humboldt last week. The Cardinals literally ran away from the field in that race, placing first with 54 points. Runnerup Humboldt was well behind with 98 points while Mason City was third with 100 points. Reece Smith added another individual title to his resume as the sophomore standout won the race in 16:55. Logan Dalbeck placed fifth with a time of 17:20 and Ray Cataldo also finished in the top ten, placing ninth in 17:53. Completing the team total were Austin Siegrist (21st, 18:29) and Derek Brown (22nd, 18:35). Also on the varsity roster were Andy Schruer (63rd, 20:12) and Tyler Obermann (74th, 20:32). The Cards utilized their largest junior varsity of the season at Humboldt with 18 runners competing. On that list of racers were Nathan Larson (20:12), Mason Wirtz (20:21), Lucas Rayhons (21:14), Luke Brown (21:53), Matt Heinemann (21:59), Dalton Hawe (22:03), Patrick Carew (22:06), Austin Case (22:36), Andrew Dornbier

(22:58), Drew Furst (23:51), Sam Childress (24:22), Keegan Clark (24:44), Jordan Upmeyer (24:50), Seth Miller (25:32), Braden Hess (25:52), McKinley Hawe (25:58), Austin Mohlis (26:21) and Luke Hansen (26:26). “The guys ran very well on a very tough course,” noted Short. “We’re getting to the most important part of the season and it is great to see the runners working so hard.” GHV was scheduled to host their annual cross-country meet on Monday, but flooding at the golf course has forced postponement of that race. The Cards will be in action on Thursday at Hampton. Team scores from the Humboldt cross country meet follow.

Cardinal Boys Dominate at Hampton Race The Leader • Oct. 5 GHV has become accustomed to winning team titles at boys’ crosscountry meets and last week’s event at Hampton added another trophy to the collection. The Cards easily outdistanced the remainder of the field, scoring 28 points while the next finisher Humboldt was well behind with 44. Reece Smith picked up another first place finish with a time of 16:24. Logan Dalbeck and Ray Cataldo finished second and fourth respectively with times of 16:56 and 17:34 while Austin Siegrist was tenth with a personal-record time of 17:50. Derek Brown completed the team total with an 11th place finish in 17:56. Nathan Larson and Andy Schreur completed the varsity roster as Larson placed 27th with a personal record time of 19:18 and Schreur was 31st in 19:39. GHV assistant coach Emberly Albertson noted that many of the racers recorded personal record times at the meet, making for a very exciting evening. Junior varsity runners finish-

Also representing GHV in the JV race were Lucas Rayhons (20:18), Luke Brown (20:19), Dalton Hawe (20:22), Andrew Dornbier (20:49), Jordan Upmeyer (23:29), McKinley Hawe (23:58), Austin Case (24:26) and Derek Neuberger (27:16). The Cardinals will compete in one race this week, traveling to Eagle Grove on Thursday. Complete team scores from the Hampton meet follow.

Post-season expectations are high for the GHV boys’ crosscountry team and last week’s action at Eagle Grove gave the Cardinals more reason to be excited. Reece Smith continued his streak of individual titles while propelling the Cardinals to a third place finish against some of the toughest teams in the state. Two ranked teams from Class 3A finished ahead of GHV in the team standings as Gilbert won the title with 25 points followed by Humboldt with 61. GHV placed third with 73 points while the remainder of the field was well behind. Smith is currently the top-rated runner in Class 2A and the GHV sophomore placed first overall in 16:25. Ray Cataldo and Logan Dalbeck are also ranked among the top twenty individuals in the state and they placed 13th and 21st overall in 17:40 and 18:03. Austin Siegrist followed Dalbeck to the finish line, placing 22nd in 18:06 and Derek Brown completed the team total by placing 26th in 18:17. Completing the varsity roster were Dalton Kelley (40th, 19:00) and Nathan Larson (54th, 19:25). Kelley’s time in this race was a 30 second improvement over his previous personal record. Andy Schreur led the GHV junior varsity racers with a time of 19:29. Also racing for the Cardinals in JV action were Mason Wirtz (19:51), Tyler Obermann (20:16),

Lucas Rayhons (20:33), Luke Brown (20:36), Dalton Hawe (20:45), Patrick Carew (22:02), Matt Heineman (21:38), Seth Miller (21:46), Sam Childress (22:54), Braden Hess (23:07), Drew Furst (23:16), Jordan Upmeyer (23:28), Luke Hansen (23:23), Keegan Clark (24:30), Spencer Formanek (24:27), Austin Mohlis (24:30), Austin Case (24:47), McKinley Hawe (24:38) and Derek Neuberger (26:07). Cardinal coach Jeff Short commented, “The team ran well on a hilly course against some of the best teams in the state. Reece’s winning time was only eight seconds off of his personal record. Ray also ran well to

finish as our number two runner. Many of the guys appear to be peaking at the right time with only three meets to go before districts.” The Cardinals have a big week ahead of them with a meet at Forest City on Monday and the TIC conference race on Thursday. Team scores from the Eagle Grove meet follow.

Cardinal Boys Roll at TIC Race Another year, another conference cross-country title for the GHV boys’ squad. After winning the Class 2A title last season and sitting on top of the ratings this year, bringing home the TIC trophy may seem a bit anticlimactic, but nevertheless GHV’s enthusiasm peaked for last Thursday’s race. It was the second event of the week for the Cardinal runners as they also ran at Forest City on Monday. GHV finished fourth overall at Forest City on Monday, not bad considering that the Cardinals’ top runners were taking the day off to remain rested for Thursday’s race. Newman won the team title with 37 points followed by Forest City and Osage with 61 and 67. GHV’s team score on the day without their three top-twenty (Class 2A) competitors in the field was 91 points. The seven runners on the varsity roster were competing to fill the final two open slots for Thursday’s TIC race. Mason Wirtz secured one of those positions by leading GHV, placing 14th in 18:22. Tyler Obermann placed 17th in 18:34 followed by Dalton Kelly (19th, 18:46) and Nathan Larson (20th, 18:48). Andy Schreur completed the team score by placing 22nd in 18:51. Also running in the varsity race for GHV were Lucas Rayhons (26th, 18:58) and Dalton Hawe (37th, 19:42). Cardinal assistant coach Em-

berly Albertson commented, “The boys ran great at Forest City. We had 14 boys run their best times of the season with only a few meets to go. This meet determined the last two runners to fill the varsity squad for the conference meet. Mason Wirtz and Tyler Obermann ran their way onto the varsity squad for the TIC meet.” In JV action, nine individuals completed the course in personal record times. Competing in that race for GHV were Seth Miller (19:48), Luke Brown (19:50), Patrick Carew (20:27), Andrew Dornbier (20:35), Braden Hess (20:46), Keegan Clark (21:14), Sam Childress (21:25), Austin Mohlis (21:31), Jordan Upmeyer (21:33), Drew Furst (21:49), Austin Case (22:34), McKinley Hawe (24;12), Luke Hansen (24:37) and Derek Neuberger (24:56). GHV entered Thursday’s TIC race hosted by NIACC as the clear favorite to win the title and the Cardinals easily lived up to those expectations. Against TIC West teams GHV finished 25 points ahead of the runner-up Eagle Grove. The winning margin was even greater when the two divisions were combined with GHV scoring 32 points compared to runner-up Eagle Grove’s 78. Reece Smith literally ran away from the competition, completing the course in a personal record time of 15:59 to win the individ-

ual title. Logan Dalbeck finished in 16:41 to place second against TIC West competitors and third overall. Ray Cataldo was also a top-ten finisher, placing fourth in the TIC West standings and sixth overall with a time of 17:17. Austin Siegrist is peaking at the right time, recording a personal record time of 17:36 to finish seventh and tenth. Completing the team score was Derek Brown placing 10th and 16th overall in 18:08. Rounding out the varsity roster were Mason Wirtz (13th, 25th, 18:37) and Tyler Obermann (26th, 63rd, 19:50). The Junior Varsity race was completely dominated by GHV in both points and competitors. The Cardinals finished the JV team competition with 24 points with six runners finishing among the top-ten places. Racing in the JV race for GHV were Nathan Larson (18:46), Dalton Kelly (19:07), Lucas Rayhons (19:23), Andy Schreur (19:31), Seth Miller (19:50), Luke Brown (19:50), Braden Hess (20:57), Matt Heineman (21:04), Patrick Carew (21:05), Austin Case (21:15), Andrew Dornbier (21:20), Dalton Hawe (22:08), Drew Furst (22:21), Keegan Clark (22:31), Luke Hansen (22:31), Austin Mohlis (22:57), Sam Childress (22:03), Jordan Upmeyer (23:08), McKinley Hawe (23:56) and Derek Neuberger (25:34). GHV Boys Will Defend State Title The Leader • Oct. 26 With GHV sitting atop of the Class 2A Boys’ Cross-Country rankings all season, it was really no surprise to see the Cardinals win the title at last week’s District Championship race. The Cards were expected to emerge as the team champion and with three racers finishing among the top four places winning the title was pretty much “business as usualâ€?. The meet was hosted by GHV at the golf course on Thursday, giving the squad a great opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd. Cardinal coach Jeff Short was appreciative for this opportunity. “It was incredible to run a Regional Meet on our own course. I think it was great for the runners, fans, and the community. There was a lot of work involved organizing and running the meet, but with all of the willing volunteers, it went great! Cards Place Fifth at State Cross-Country The Leader • Nov. 2

GHV’s quest to defend their Class 2A State Cross-Country title fell a few points short on Saturday. The Cardinals have been perched on top of the Class 2A rankings virtually all season and appeared to be well on the way to bringing home another championship trophy, but they were denied that achievement by some very talented competitors representing several very strong teams. GHV’s Reece Smith has been eyeing an individual state title all season and as the state’s top-

total were seniors Austin Siegrist and Mason Wirtz. Siegrist placed 38th overall in 17:56 while Wirtz placed 84th in 19:05.9. Also running for the Cards in the state meet were sophomore Nathan Larson (96th, 19:50.4) and senior Derek Brown (104th, 20:36.0). Cardinal coach Jeff Short was no doubt a bit disappointed with the outcome of the race but still maintained a positive outlook on the day’s results. “I was very proud of the team this year, we had a great season. It did not finish like we would have liked, but it still was a great season. I tell the runners that a season is not determined in one race, nor is a runner’s legacy. I thought it was great to have the number of students and fans at the State Meet supporting the program. Many of them were underclassmen who will be the needed to fill the holes left by this year’s departing seniors.” Team scores from the Class 2A State Cross641-923-2645 | www.jasperseninsurance.com Country race follow. ranked runner in Class 2A seemed prepared to reach that goal. Smith had to settle for the runner-up spot however as Ogden’s Andrew Stumbo pulled away from the pack to finish the race as the individual champion. Smith ran an impressive race, finishing the course 25 seconds ahead of the next runner with a time of 16:02.2. Senior Logan Dalbeck completed his career with a top-ten finish after placing sixth overall in 16:39.4. Ray Cataldo was GHV’s third runner, placing 33rd overall in 17:49. Completing the Cardinal
