School Mission Statement: “Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Community School District will provide a quality education in which students become lifelong collaborative learners and innovative problem solvers in a global society."

School District News November 10, 2016 ~ Vol. 12, Issue 5 The EBF District sponsored a Color Run on Saturday, October 22. Approximately 190 participants (students, family, friends, school and community members) made their way on the designated run/walk in Eddyville. Young and old were showered with “safe, eco-friendly, plant-based powdered dye” along their path, turning them into moving targets! Money raised is used for PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, in all of the school buildings. The fundraising for this event puts 70% of the money back into the hands of the school to use for rewards like the SOAR store, field trips and special events. The money raised by the students in each building stays with that building. Across the district over $6,500 was raised and 70% of that will be given back to the students in a positive way. This was the second year for the Color-A-Thon, and the district hopes to make it an annual event to continue to raise money and be able to support the students in positive ways. ~ Information/Photos Courtesy of DeeDee LeHigh and Ann Ohms

THANK YOU, IOWA!

Wednesday, October 5th, Fremont Elementary School helped the state of Iowa meet the goal to have walks in all 99 counties! Over 900 walks took place across our great state that's a lot of people accepting the challenge to #StepItUp to 30 minutes of walking! The entire Fremont School, grades Pre School - 6th and all adults, walked through the streets of Fremont and enjoyed the beautiful fall day. We ended up walking 1 1/2 miles and had such a good time that nobody even realized how far we were walking. We might have gotten a few looks from others as it was Nerd Day to celebrate Homecoming Week! Fun times! Let’s all keep moving toward a healthier lifestyle!!! Thanks to Kelli Raymond for taking pictures. ~Submitted by Mrs. Kathleen Rempe, PE Teacher

This garden is primarily used to grow vegetables for the Iowa State Fair, but Indiana. The girl attendees were Morgan Wells, Adlynn Eveland, Claire Jager, Rylie Lathen, and Sarah Davidson, and the five boys that went were CD Brinegar, these boys took it beyond that. Some tomatoes were picked and donated to the school's Lex Judy, Austin Stewart, Jon Edge, and Alan Angle. Along with the ten kids were cafeteria, and strawberries were dug up and donated to citiphenomenal chaperones, Liz Spring and Pat Powers. zens. They didn't just stop at tending to the garden for this While the kids were in Indiana, they were able to experience many things. On year, but they were already thinking ahead for next. They the first day there, they were able to relax after the long car ride and swim in the pool, followed by a good dinner. On the second day of National Convention, they got a load of compost to put in the garden, and cleaned out all of the dead plants. Everyone in the chapter is really went to the Convention Hall; at the Convention Hall, the kids were able to go around to the different exhibitors and learn more about what they were exhibiting grateful for all of their hard work, and can't wait to start the garden again next year. in agriculture. Several kids were able to talk to colleges that were there and learn more about what they wanted to do with their future careers in agriculture. Later in the day, the kids were able to attend the General Session. During this session, they were able to learn about their National FFA Officers and watch them do their opening ceremonies. There was even a guest motivational speaker, named Diana Nyad. Adlynn Eveland said, “Diana Nyad was a very inspiring woman, who showed that you will always have time to fulfill your dreams.” Nyad was able to swim from Cuba to Key West. When the session was over, they hustled over to the Lucas Oil Stadium to watch Cole Swindell and Chris Young in concert. On day three, they did a community service project on the Maple Lawn Farm. This farm was in the process of being preserved, so the FFA kids were able to clean the house, paint, and refurbish a chicken coop. To refurbish this chicken coop, they took out the rotting beams and put in new ones, and also replaced the rotting floor. Following the hard work, the kids got to have some fun that night at the Cinch Rodeo. At Maple Lawn , (left to right) Liz Spring, CD Brinegar, Jon Edge, Sarah Davidson, Lex Judy, Adlynn Eveland, Morgan Wells,Claire Jager, Patrick Powers, Alan Angle, Rylie Lathen, Austin Stewart

The students that were able to attend this national convention worked very hard to be able to go by earning enough points. The point system is based off of FFA activities that they attend throughout the year. Because they are so dedicated to FFA, they were able to be rewarded by a fun week in Indianapolis, with other members just like them from all around the nation. With assistance from the AgriPower Alumni, the kids were able to go to this year’s National Convention. Also the EBFCSD was kind enough to let us take the suburbans to Indianapolis. Everyone greatly enjoyed the experience, and are ready to start working for next year’s convention.

Agri-Power FFA Chapter Holds A Mom’s Night Out

Written By: Randie Richmond, Morgan Wells and Adlynn Eveland The Agri-Power FFA members and their moms had a night out in the ag shop. The moms came together and competed in different events that the males would usually do. The different events consisted of lacing up a boot, digging out bolts in a bucket of corn, sawing a piece of wood, hammering a nail into a board, and the usual FFA test. After the events were completed, the moms and the FFA members got together and ate chili. Each member even brought a different dessert for the supper. Chapter member Lex Judy mentioned “I always have a lot of fun watching the moms try to do each event. I think it is a great way to get the mothers involved with our chapter and to just have fun.” During the dinner, the winners were announced. Coming in first place, with the most points, was Harmony Edge; she is the mother of member Jon Edge. In second place was Allison Angle, mother of members Austin and Alan Angle. Last, but not least, third place went to Aimee Wells, the mother of chapter member Morgan Wells. Aimee stated to us, “I have come Harmony Edge, Allison Angle, Aimee Wells every year since Morgan has been in FFA, and every year the kids never cease to amaze me with the different events they come up with. It’s something I will be coming to for more years to come.” The Agri-Power FFA Chapter would like to thank the moms who came out, competed, and had fun. Moms night out was certainly a “moms night out”.

Staying Healthy with Dessert

Making healthy decisions are hard when it comes to dessert. Cake, ice cream, and chocolate are EVERYWHERE. Although these are delicious, too much can be a disaster for your diet. Trying different desserts that contain more healthy ingredients could be helpful to your lifestyle. These after-dinner dessert recipes are not only better for you, but they’re pretty tasty too! Cinnamon-Pear Frozen Yogurt: 1 (15 ounce) can pear halves 2 cups of vanilla yogurt 1/3 cup of white sugar ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon of ground allspice 1. Drain pears, reserving 1/2 cup of juice. Puree pears in food processor or blender. 2. Combine pears, reserved juice, yogurt, sugar, cinnamon and allspice in canister of ice cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturers' directions. Making this dessert is better for you than ice cream. The pears and cinnamon sweeten the yogurt, so less sugar is used. This recipe is a simple way to make dinner fun and more healthy for you and your kids! -Carson Burrell, EBF FCCLA

Nutrition 3 Participates in IHCC’s Iron Chef

Mrs. Strausser's Nutrition 3 class attended the Iron Chef Competition at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa on Friday, October 28, 2016. This year the secret ingredient was Pasta and Southeastern Iowa products. Each course had to contain pasta. For the appetizer they created “ThreeCheese Summer Squash Cup with Marinara Sauce”. The main course was “Italian Breaded Chicken Breast” served with “Butternut Squash Ravioli with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce”. The dessert plan was “AlmondFlavored Pasta with Strawberries, Kiwi, Peaches and Blueberries”. Peaches were not in season, so they did not purchase them; the group had to think fast and Mrs. Strausser went to the store and made some alterations with last minute purchases of blackberries and red raspberries. Dessert was served with a honey-whipped cream. Mrs. Strausser commented, “I could not have been happier with the way these six students performed. We were the last team to be judged that day. We competed against Burlington, Fort Madison, Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant, Central Lee, Danville, and Van Buren. The judges had a lot of great things to say about their great team work, and they liked that they made all of their own pasta.” Next spring will bring another Iron Chef Competition. Pictured below are Sarah Davidson, Levi Strausser, Shayla Maize, Allie Adams, Caleb Adamson, and Shayla Veldhuizen.

BASIC CYBERSAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS Children are exposed to the Internet at younger and younger ages. Cyberspace is at home, at school and friends’ homes. As a parent or guardian, it is important that you keep current with your children’s online activities and that you communicate with each other often. Learn all you can about the Internet and become familiar with social networking sites and terms. For younger children, find and mark sites for them to visit. These can include fun activity sites, library reference sites and search engines for help on school projects. Talk to your children about the Internet and the importance of being safe while online. Assure your children that that whatever rules you set are for their safety. Only operate computers in an open area of your home, such as the living room or kitchen. This will make it easier to monitor activity than if the computer is in your children’s rooms. Be familiar with parental control programs to filter/ block inappropriate content for your children. Monitor your children’s Internet use, maintain access to their email accounts and social networks they are on. If a child gets uneasy while on the computer and you enter the room, this might indicate that he or she is visiting an offlimits site. Have your children show you what they know how to do online, as well as their favorite sites. Get to know your children’s online friends. If your child informs you of an inappropriate site, report it to your ISP or the company that created the material. Set up and/or learn all of your children’s passwords and screen names/usernames (online identities). Make sure screen names don’t reveal information about your children’s real names, addresses, school or age. Spend time online together until you are assured that your children understand the potential dangers and how to handle difficult situations. “Google” your children’s names on the Internet. Look at profiles and any postings about them. If your children go to other homes, find out what rules they have in place for Internet usage. I , I . T I .

When to Keep a Sick Child Home: Reference Guide for Parents Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can be difficult. Please use the following guidelines to help you in your decision. Be sure to call your child’s school to let them know why your child is absent, and then send the appropriate note when your child returns to school. 1. Fever: student must be fever-free (<100.4 Fahrenheit) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin). 2. Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if the child acts or looks ill. Student must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning. 3. Persistent nasal congestion, reddened eyes, sore throat, cough, or headaches that disrupt the student’s learning or pose a risk of disease transmission to others. 4. Unexplained skin eruptions or rashes. When in doubt, consult your child’s doctor before sending your child to school. 5. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) appearing as redness of the conjunctiva (lining of eye/ eyelid) with or without pus drainage from eye and/ or swelling. Student should not return to school until they have been examined and treated. 6. Any other communicable illnesses in which you have been advised to remain out of school until cleared to return by the county health department or your child’s doctor (i.e. chicken pox, scabies, influenza, whooping cough, tuberculosis, measles, impetigo, etc.) 7. Any other health condition that in the school nurses judgment is of concern for the others health and well-being and that of the child. 8 GRADE VOLLEYBALL UNDEFEATED! ~Submitted by Coach John Thompson

The 8th Grade EBF Volleyball Team capped off another highly successful season sweeping all conference opponents and finishing with an undefeated season of 9-0. The team was also undefeated as 7th Graders during the 2015 season; thus, the girls have completed their entire middle-school careers, undefeated and untied in the sport of volleyball. Coached by Rachel Hadden, the team utilized exceptional serving, passing, setting, and attacking to showcase an artillery of skill sets against their competitors. “I am very proud of this team and their accomplishments. They were very coachable and improved throughout the season in all facets of the game, Hadden commented. The team often held their contenders to single digits in games, winning decisively throughout the fall. The girls will receive a plaque to put in the school trophy case. A cake reception is also being planned in their honor. Congratulations to Coach Hadden and the EBF 8th Grade Volleyball Squad on their perfect season! Back Row: Coach Rachel Hadden, Blair Holohan, Emma McDonough, Lis Glosser, Abby Hanson, Allison Blad, Paige Harter, Emalee Davis, Brooke Shafer; Middle Row: Nikayla Leaf, Shelby Akers, Abby Knowler, Faith Roberts, Peyton Devers, Lizabeth Hotchkiss; Front Row: Kayla Williams (manager), Josie Rea, Marissa McAlister, Felicity Reddy (manager), Koleen Good (not pictured).

We started off the match scared to play and made lots of mistakes. After we got the first game out of the way and finally relaxed, things started to fall in place. We seemed to trade points throughout the match, but the Rockets didn't give up and kept pressing on to the next point. I am proud of how they reacted to the pressure of the game. We started off with the pressure of the game getting to us, but as the game progressed they felt the success they were generating which allowed them to play the game. Our hitting and blocking was on, but we didn't perform as well in our serve receive, an area we normally do well - just didn't have it that night. It was a great team effort. ~Coach Gladys Genskow

High School Football Report

On Oct. 14th the Rockets went to Clarke and won 34-20, moving the record to 3-5 overall. This was a great night for the Rocket running attack; in total the offense gained 370 yards on the ground. Leading the way was Trey Moore with 156 yards, Dakota Boyer with 103, and Ryan Henkle with 60. Trey Moore also threw for a touchdown to Dillon Howard. The defense came up big in the first quarter. T.J. Sinnif stripped the ball and Gabe Larkin picked it up and ran for 9 yards. This was a great all-around game for the football team; it really showed that everybody was bought into the program. On Oct. 21st the Rockets hosted the Centerville Reds and lost 24-6. The Rockets were able to move the ball in the first half, and Trey Moore had the only score before being sidelined with an injury. After the half, the Reds came out firing and hit a couple of big plays in the air to win the ball game. The Rockets finished the season 3-6. I would like to thank all that supported the football team this year and players. The boys bought into the program and showed great strides for the next year to come. ~Coach Brian Koehler

EBF vs. Union Oct. 31, 2016 Class 3A Finals 13-25 8-25 13-25 STATS: Torie Alexander: 24/25 Attacks, 5 Kills, 4/6 Serving, 5 Digs; Haegen Boyer: 2/2 Attacks, 1 Assist, 4/4 Serving, 12 Digs; Emma Bunnell: 11/12 Attacks, 4 Kills, 4 Assists, 1/1 Serving, 1 Dig; Taylor Caves: 6/8 Attacks, 1 Dig; Darian Johnson: 5/5 Serving; Teri Jo Lane: 6 Assists, 4/4 Serving, 3 Digs; Grace Roberts: 7-9 Attacks, 2 Kills; Taryn Swartz: 0/1 Attacks, 4/5 Serving, 1 Ace, 4 Digs; Lexi Taylor: 5/6 Attacks, 3 Digs; Briana Ver Steegh: 5/6 Attacks, 3/5 Serving, 4 Digs. COMMENTS: EBF came in the finals with nothing to lose. We battled with the #1 ranked Union with all we had. Unfortunately, they were the better team. We had moments of good plays, but not enough to get past the consistent power of Union. I am proud of how our kids didn't give up. They put forth effort to succeed every point. It's hard to end your season with a loss like this, but it generates the spark to get better for next season. It will be hard to replace those seniors who stepped up all season with their leadership and experience; underclassman now have experience and get back to working on maintaining the EBF success in volleyball. We will start looking at the winter season and getting our kids the exposure needed to better our skills. Thank you to everyone who has made this season such a success. ~Coach Gladys Genskow

Professional Football Player Turned Motivational Speaker Visits the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont School District rd th

On October 6, 2016, EBF 3 -12 graders were fortunate to have a retired professional football player come and talk with them. Steve Grant, a former Indianapolis Colt and Tampa Bay Buccaneer, is now a motivational speaker who travels with the Sports World Organization. As he travels to schools around the United States, he talks with students about imagination, attitudes, choices, and perseverance. Mr. Grant told the kids to always try their best, live up to their dreams, and to not let anyone or anything get in the way of fulfilling their dreams; his encouragement helped them to understand that they can do whatever they set their minds to if they try. He stressed to his listeners the importance of making positive choices in their lives. He admonished them to remember that: You’re not born a winner; You’re not born a loser; You’re born a ~submitted by Lindy Hammes chooser!

Art Faculty Exhibition

OTTUMWA --- The annual Indian Hills Community College art faculty exhibition, featuring the art work of Lisa Fritz and Mark McWhorter, can be viewed starting Nov. 14 in the Indian Hills Art Gallery on Ottumwa’s campus. The public is invited to the opening reception of this art exhibition at which viewers may view the art work and visit with the artists regarding their works on display. Many of these art works will be for sale. The reception will be held on Monday, Nov. 14, from 7-8:30 pm., with refreshments served. Lisa Fritz has taught at Indian Hills as an adjunct art instructor since 1986 and as a full time art professor since 2010. Fritz’s drawings and paintings in colored pencil, oil and acrylics feature an odd combination of seemingly unrelated objects. In the gently surrealistic worlds of her art works it is up to the viewer to tell the story. Fritz has been working on a series of block prints that are based on objects in her environment that she then transforms into patterns. Mark McWhorter has taught art at Indian Hills since 1980. He teaches art studio and art history at the Ottumwa campus and oversees the operation of the Indian Hills Art Gallery. His art work to be shown will include pottery and paintings in acrylics and watercolor. McWhorter’s stoneware pottery is made to be put to use. There will be a variety of lidded jars, mugs, bowls and teapots. The subject matter for his landscape paintings comes from many locations including Southern Iowa, South Carolina, and the American West. The IHCC art faculty exhibition will be on view until Thursday, Dec. 8. The Indian Hills Community College Art Gallery is located in the Ottumwa campus Library. The gallery is open from 8:00 am to 8:40 pm Mondays to Thursdays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays, and from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm on Sundays.

Registration Opens for College Scholarship Program Scholarship Gives 30 Iowa High School Seniors Chance at $2,000 Educates Them on College Borrowing and Personal Finance

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (Nov. 1, 2016) — Registration is open for a scholarship that offers 30 Iowa high school seniors a chance to receive $2,000 for college while learning important financial literacy skills. In addition, each recipient’s high school will receive a corresponding $500 award. High school seniors may register for the Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge: Senior Scholarship at www.IowaStudentLoan.org/SeniorScholarship between now and Feb. 17. Iowa Student Loan® will award $2,000 scholarships to 30 students who complete two online financial literacy tutorials and score highest on a related assessment. Registered students also receive emails highlighting financial literacy tips, such as the importance of early career and college planning and ways to reduce student loan indebtedness. After registering for the scholarship, students receive emailed instructions for completing the three required online components. The two tutorials — Student Loan Game Plansm and the ROCI Reality Check — were developed by Iowa Student Loan to help students understand the consequences of college borrowing and discover how to maximize their return on college investment, or ROCI. A related multiple choice assessment will check students’ understanding of the concepts in the tutorials. The 30 high school seniors who score highest on the assessment test will each receive a $2,000 scholarship that will be sent directly to their colleges in fall 2017. If top-scoring students tie, those students will be asked to write and be judged on a short essay so winners can be determined. Each scholarship recipient’s high school will also receive a corresponding $500 award to be used toward scholarship and financial literacy programs. “Besides financially benefitting the scholarship recipients and their high schools, for students who use the tools, this program helps prepare them to pay for college,” said Steve McCullough, CEO and president of Iowa Student Loan. “As a student loan company, we often hear from borrowers who say they didn’t understand how their debt would affect them later. This is one way we educate students before they ever take out their first student loan.” Chris Hensley, Iowa Student Loan board chair, concurs. “The suite of tools students experience through the scholarship process is really designed to help them understand how to borrow less and to make wise student loan decisions based on expected starting salaries for their intended college majors. The Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge: Senior Scholarship is open to legal U.S. citizens who are permanent residents of Iowa; are seniors at an Iowa high school during the 2016–2017 school year; and attend college in fall 2017. It is a no-purchase -required program, and full rules and details are available at www.IowaStudentLoan.org/SeniorScholarship. Learn More - Students, parents and educators who are interested in learning more about the Iowa Financial Know-How Challenge: Senior Scholarship should visit www.IowaStudentLoan.org or email scholarship@studentloan.org. Established in 1979 as a private, nonprofit organization, Iowa Student Loan helps Iowa students and families obtain the resources necessary to succeed in postsecondary education. Iowa Student Loan has helped more than 392,500 students pay for college. The organization, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, also provides an array of borrower benefits, financial literacy tools and community reinvestment programs, including support for free college planning services for students and their families.

Pay It Forward Tuesday at Fremont Elementary In 5th and 6th grade library, we are reading the book “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde. This book is based on a true story. The Pay It Forward movement started out as an extra credit assignment for a middle school social studies class. The assignment was for them to think of a way to make the world a better place to live. With that assignment, one student came up with the Pay It Forward movement that has gone around the world. We would like to start our own Pay It Forward movement here at the Fremont Elementary School. We are calling it Pay It Forward Tuesdays. For the months of October through February, we are asking students to bring any spare change that they might have to school EVERY Tuesday. With this money, we will buy books at the Pay It Forward Book Fair. Half of the books will be for our students at Fremont, and the other half of the books will be given to other children in the area. 49
