Ellsworth Community College ag students learn long distance-customer service.
Easy access to farm tech and expertise
By Rick Patrie News Editor IOWA FALLS – Ellsworth Community College has partnered with a communications technology provider called AgriSync to help the school’s precision agriculture students learn 21st Century-style customer service skills. Many look forward to jobs out in the farm service sector, and like every other part of the economy, it is becoming clogged with Smartphones and hybrid gadgetry. Ellsworth Community College (ECC) began its Precision
Agriculture degree program in 2011 to help tackle the talent shortage and need for experienced experts in the growing agriculture technology field. ECC is one of the few colleges across the country that offers a degree in Precision Agriculture. “We wanted a program that would create the ‘Precision Agriculture Technician’, the person who is going to be out there one afternoon installing new equipment, and two hours later they are troubleshooting a Precision Agriculture system,” says Kevin Butt, agriculture professor at ECC.
The partnership with AgriSync comes with all the advances in smart technology and its move out into the fields, farmers more and more find themselves calling on experts to help solve problems which often crop up right in the middle of the busiest seasons. The experts can’t be everywhere at once, so students in the Ag programs at Ellsworth Community College are getting acquainted with a new communications link that puts the farmer and the farmer’s technical (continued on page 4)

61 percent for Trump sets tone for Hardin County returns up and down ballot By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – The GOP swept everything in Hardin County, from top to bottom. Nowhere was it even close. At the top of the ticket Donald Trump carried the county with 61 percent of the vote. The Trump people carried every voting precinct in the county and the vote split was: 5,231 for Trump/ Pence, 2,774 for Clinton and Kaine. Total votes in the presidential race here were 8,597. Voters actually had nine candidates from which to choose in the Presidential race. Libertarian Gary Johnson garnered 294 votes in the county, the others were negligible. One step down within the national races, incumbent Senator Charles Grassley defeated challenger, Democrat Patty Judge here in Hardin County by a similar landslide
margin, and though the margin was somewhat closer, House member Steve King easily defeated Democrat Kim Weaver, too. Grassley garnered 5,812 votes to Judge’s 2,273, and King took 5,229 to Weaver’s 3,039 here in Hardin County. Both GOP candidates won statewide. At the state level, Iowa House member Pat Grassley easily defeated his Democrat challenger Doris Fritz, 3,434 to 1,503 here in Hardin County. In the district wide the race for the house 50 seat in the Iowa Legislature Grassley won by 74.6 percent. Grassley represents the north half of Hardin County as well as all of Grundy and a large portion of Butler County. The House District 49 seat in the Legislature also saw Republican Dave Deyoe handily beat challenger, Democrat Mickie Franklin by 2,118 to 810 here in Hardin County, and win district wide with 59.9 percent.
Libertarian candidate John Evans also took 191 votes in that race. Deyoe represents the south half of Hardin County and a large swath of Story County in the Statehouse. The Republican rout also extended to county voting. There was just one race on the ballot for county posts. In that, newcomer William John Hoffman of Whitten defeated incumbent Democrat Ronn Rickels Iowa Falls for the board of supervisor post. The vote total was 4,338 Hoffman, to 3,748 Rickels. Rickels had served one term on the board. Republicans Jessica Lara and David McDaniel ran unopposed for the county auditor and county sheriff positions. Auditor, Lara got 6,811 votes total, and Sheriff McDaniel 7,230. In 2012 election the vote total was 8941 compared to 8597 this year. (For a precinct breakdown see page 3.)

South Hardin is Music City
All State and Honor Musicians By Rick Patrie News Editor E-NP – The instrumental music department in the South Hardin Schools is quickly carving out a niche in the ranks of honor groups recognizing student musicians from across the state. Latest word is that two high school students here have been chosen for statewide All State orchestra, which will conclude its annual gathering with a concert on Saturday November 19 at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus. All state is effectively music’s All Americans here in Iowa, and Laura Stanish and Justyn Smith carry the South Hardin banner to the big conclave and the concert that will be rebroadcast on Iowa Public Television. Meanwhile, seven high school band members at South Hardin were recently accepted into the NCIBA bandmaster’s district honor band. It is a stepping-stone to the All State recognition for student musicians. The significance of the naming of the seven, lies in that number, says instructor Wayne Lu. All seven of the students submitted for consideration from the school here were accepted. Very rare, Lu says. They will travel to Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge for a reception in their honor, and then the assembled bands – there are two of them, one for 9th and 10th graders and one for 11th and 12th grader – will perform in concert that evening. The seven accepted included Laura Stanish, a senior flute player, Justyn Smith a junior French Horn player, Tom Haywood, a senior tuba, Haley Teske, an 11th grade clarinet, Eden Tym a sophomore French horn player, Gavin Roy a freshman percussionist, and Cyrene Werner a sophomore clarinet player.
Selection for the honor band recognition is based on information submitted in the nomination packet. Of special note, Lu says, is that the All State competition November 17 to 19 in Ames, sees Stanish attend with wins in her district for four years in a row on flute, essentially meaning she was the top flute player in each of the last four years in the North Central Iowa District. Smith has been an all stater twice now. And he is only a junior, Lu says of the French horn player. Lu says that the seven successful nominations to the district honor band is a first for the school district. He notes the honor band assembling in Fort Dodge consists of 100 freshmen and sophomores and 100 junior and seniors. Students for the honor band are selected based on a nomination process. The selection criteria includes if the student has been an All-State Band member or alternate, if the student was recalled for All-State Band and if the student auditioned for All-State Band. The criteria also looks at the students’ solo/ensemble participation and rating as well as if they are a past district Honor Band member, what private study they’ve done, other Honor Bands they’ve been selected to and the recommendation of their band director. Music achievements can often extend beyond high school, Lu says. He has one of his former students in music education in college now and a couple of current ones are considering higher education in music. Music offers lots of adaptation to the job market, one of the more notable is music lent to therapeutic purposes. Lu says the success of the current group of students has been very gratifying.

Public Record Letters to the Editor Veteran Monument effort suspended To the Editor: After much thought and discussion, the Eldora Veterans’ Monument Committee has decided to suspend our project. The sole purpose for forming this committee was to honor our veterans who lived in the city of Eldora area (50627 zip code) with a monument/memorial. We felt these veterans deserved to be honored for their service to our country like all other towns around us have done. This monument/memorial was to be dedicated to the veterans who have passed away, for those currently serving, and for those who choose to serve in the future. But for some reason, the community of Eldora couldn’t come together on this one project. How very sad and what a statement to our veterans. Many articles were written in the Eldora Newspaper and the Times Citizen along with radio spots reporting on the project and always asking anyone who was interested in assisting to attend the meetings. A committee was formed almost two years ago with around 25 people including at least six former veterans. We were all so enthusiastic and had our hearts dedicated to this project. We have donated our time, held fundraisers, and used our own money for many expenses. We listened and addressed any questions or concerns that people brought to us (not hearsay). Location was one of the main topics we dealt with first. We researched all potential locations brought to the committee, and specifically addressed all of Mr. Foster’s location ideas. After reviewing all of them, the committee felt that the location at the old Deer Park was the best place for the monument. The City Council of Eldora voted on and gave us the location where the Welcome Center is currently located. This caused so much controversy and downright nastiness from people within the community. That people could turn so hateful and resentful instead of trying to work together was truly sad. We were looking for a location that was visible, had parking available, handicapped accessible, big enough for future expansion, and a place to reflect. These are just a few things we thought about when selecting the location. We then asked for assistance from a landscaping company, Ritland and Associates and Tom Stancliffe, a professor at UNI who designed other veteran memorials, to give our com-
mittee some guidance in designing a monument. The committee selected a design that was unique but also gave us the opportunity to look for some grants/money as there are no grants available for just Veterans’ Monuments. We even hired specific assistance from someone who writes grants. Yes, this project was going to cost some money, but so have those monuments in the communities surrounding Eldora. The committee never thought that our design was extreme or as described by the Eldora American Legion members, “hoity toity.” Yes, the design was unique and not like anyone’s around us, but why would we want to copy or have one just like someone else? Lots of comments have been floating around about the design and the location, especially from the members of the Eldora Legion. Our question to the people who supposedly didn’t like the design and the location is where were you during the past two years? Why have you chosen to come forward now with your demands on exactly how the monument/memorial design should be and where you want the location to be? Instead of serving on the committee or having some open communication with the committee members, you chose instead to discuss this in a negative way. The committee couldn’t understand why people chose to discuss all their dislikes with everyone but a committee member. But when it’s all hearsay, who really knows if it was actually said or if it’s the same people voicing their opinion. Also, shouldn’t the Eldora American Legion represent ALL veterans that are members instead of just a few that attend the meetings? We have heard some very good comments about our design from local and out of town people. When the model was placed at the Veterans’ Day program, there weren’t any negative comments and there were many people in attendance. RAGRAI people who visited our booth also made positive comments about the design. We heard that the community of Eldora should have had a voice on the design. Despite our efforts to publicize and communicate as well as inviting the community to participate in the meetings, people still felt excluded. How could we possibly accomplish this? The com-
munity hasn’t come together on any one project in so many years. Only our small group showed up and was willing to try to make this goal a reality. A community unwilling to put forth the time, effort and compromise to bring a monument honoring those that have served us, should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. We ask you to think of your family, friends, and loved ones that have served. Think of what they sacrificed. Who better to honor than our local Veterans? How can a group, that is trying to do exactly that, cause such a controversy? Because of the demands made by the Eldora Legion on how exactly they want the design to be, the committee cannot with a clear conscience abide by what has been demanded of us. The Eldora Legion stated basically if we don’t do the design their way they will not back us. We have at no time asked for any monetary amount from the Legion. We have asked for their support since in almost all cases the local Legion is the first group to support and assist with a veterans’ monument. The Eldora Legion told us they felt they couldn’t support the committee because it looked like they are patting themselves on the back. What? That statement is something we as the committee couldn’t understand. This monument is for VETERANS and the Legion is made up of VETERANS. We believe the Eldora American Legion’s mission could easily include ensuring that veterans are remembered and loved. So it is with heavy hearts and much disappointment that Eldora Veterans’ Monument Committee has chosen to suspend our efforts and disband the committee. Saying this, all money donated to the Veterans’ Monument will go into a trust with the City of Eldora for any future veterans’ monument project. Of course, if you would like your donation back, you may simply ask for it in writing and mail your request to City of Eldora, 1442 Washington Street, Eldora, IA 50627. Hopefully, the few members at the Eldora Legion will step forward and decide to continue with this project exactly how they would like it to be designed. Never did this committee think that a project like this wouldn’t be supported by our whole community in Eldora. I guess we were wrong. Respectfully, The Eldora Veterans’ Committee
raised it. It was 10:30 a.m. Several of my shipmates and I, standing at the bow of the main deck of our ship, saw it clearly at our distance away from it (about the length of two football fields, we were told). Our ship was the U.S.S. Hudson DD475, a Fletcher Class Destroyer. Our orders were to provide shore bombardment and other gunnery activity while we checked the underwater surfaces for troublesome reefs, etc. Our ship is neither the largest nor the smallest of the Navy’s Fleet, but we could maneuver in waters of only 30 feet depth … if necessary. That allowed us to be close into shore … and to see the first flag raising without field glasses. To the second flag raising: There are many differing views about how and why there was a second event, most of which were (and are!) incorrect. Even magazine articles. Even by Marine Personnel. Chuck lindberg’s observation: Some glory-hunter military officer (not a Marine from ‘below’ forces) wanted that flag for a souvenir. He
found a guy to go up there and bring it back to him. The ‘guy’ ran into Chuck Lindberg who said, “Only a Marine gets THIS flag!”. ‘Guy’ went back empty handed. Glory-hunter managed to get a flag from one of the many ships in the harbor. Must have taken quite some time to accomplish. ‘Guy’ was a War Correspondent and proceeded to build up a fantasy flag raising for publication. His ‘event’ took place at 4:30 p.m. that same day. He got the same Marines to ‘pose’ for him for photos. His photos were sent over to Guam for ‘approval’ (?). Officers there selected the photo they liked best … and “the rest is history.” problem: All publications of this event ignore the FIRST FLAG RAISING … and give credit to that war correspondent for his imitation flag raising, which … in my opinion … is an insult to the First Flag Marines … and to the Marine Corps itself for not challenging it. william T. Bruner Eldora
First flag raising To the Editor: This is about the first flag raising (American Flag) on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, during the U.S. invasion in February 1945. I witnessed it. Publications of the event have been seriously and intentionally misrepresented by the media and perhaps others. This information is based on my personal visit with the last living member of the Marine Patrol, which raised that flag. His name is Charles Lindberg (no, not that one!) and I visited him in his home in Richfield, Minnesota on February 17, 2007. We spent the entire day discussing the event and the participation of each of us in it. The Marines climbed a rustic trail up to the rim of the volcanic basin that was Mt. Suribachi. They were faced with possible enemy fire all that day. They were not attacked. They scouted the area for a means with which to fly our flag and claim victory for their success. They found a length of pipe (no report of what kind of pipe, but obviously related to plumbing), attached the flag and

Flashback Friday Taking a look back at local history from previous editions of the Eldora Newspapers. Compiled by Rob Maharry. Five years ago this week-2011 • Dave Mitchell is home for good. The deal is sealed. He has been sworn on his daughter’s pinky finger, and that’s irrevocable. Mitchell clearly takes a great deal of pride in the 25-year career in the Army National Guard, which saw him rise to the rank of captain and command a company, but he says it will be ending this spring as he found his priorities clarifying during his recently completed second tour in Afghanistan. His early years in the guard had been the more customary routine, but Mitchell became a career parttime soldier during a time when part time soldiers were called upon full time—time and time again—what with the several years long running war in the Persian Gulf and the other in Afghanistan. • In the end, the calculator in the Hardin County auditor’s office will have the final very carefully chosen word—but not just yet. The big question on the Tuesday ballot, concerning the county lending its creditworthiness to a plan to construct a new Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, went down to the wire and stopped at it, unable to cross. Election officials are reportedly awaiting 19 absentee ballots before they announce what will surely be a preliminary outcome. The 19, any of which show up in the mailbox, will in the end decide the issue. That’s because the votes already counted register about as close to a tie as you can get. 10 years ago this week-2006 • On the whole, it was a night for incumbents in Hardin County, with the conspicuous exception of the race for county recorder, where the challenger prevailed by a significant margin. In a race that caught a lot of state as well as local attention, when the votes were in, Polly Granzow was re-elected to her District 44 seat in the Iowa House of Representatives, edging out fellow Eldoran Tim Hoy. Her victory was significant in terms of the local voice in the legislature, but was also noteworthy in that she was one Republican who survived what was something of a savaging the party took at the state level on Tuesday. Meanwhile, at the courthouse in Eldora, two incumbent supervisors won re-election somewhat more easily, but incumbent Republican Recorder Steve Pence was unseated by challenger Barb Nuss of Iowa Falls. • The idea has surfaced now and then in conversations around the city council table for close to a year, but within the context of ensuring the city has a point person in its day to day landlord role at the community hospital building—the notion that the town might consider selling the hospital building altogether was floated again Monday night. 25 years ago this week- 1991 • The Hardin County Supervisors
are proposing to re-establish the boundaries of the election precincts in the county. Supervisors are empowered to establish precincts in unincorporated areas of the county and must submit an approved plan to the Secretary of State by November 15, 1991. When a decimal census is completed, the process of changing precincts is done to adjust boundaries to represent changes in population. The 1990 census shows nine current precincts in Hardin County have less than 300 registered voters. Five of those precincts have populations under 200. • With nearly all of the soybeans harvested and about 80 percent of the corn in the bins, Hardin County experts are saying the yields overall are “better than expected.” Dean Ohrt, manager of the Lawn Hill Cooperative near New Providence remarked last week that, “Generally, the yield is pretty good- better than what most of us thought at first.” He said there are isolated cases, which show some of the farmers are hurting because yields are down, but the average is good considering the changes in the weather. • The results are in, but the election is not over for at least two communities in Hardin County. Runoff votes will be held in Eldora and Whitten on Tuesday, December 3, to determine city council positions. Under Iowa election laws, unless a city passes a resolution calling for a majority vote, a percentage formula is used to determine the winner. In other words, candidates must receive a certain vote total in order to win, rather than just have a larger number of votes. 50 years ago this week- 1966 • The Eldora hospital follow-up canvass will be officially launched today following instruction meetings for workers in the major gifts and follow up divisions Friday and Monday nights. The advance, general gifts and allied town drives begin next week with worker’s meetings set for Friday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. in the city hall. The drive goal for the follow-up canvass is $175,000. This includes about $100,000 in new donations plus completion of pledges from the 1963 drive. • In keeping with the trend across the nation, key Republican victories were recorded in Hardin County Tuesday as an unexpectedly large number of voters went to the polls. Based on the final count for State Senator, a total of 6,967 votes were cast in the county, an increase of 1,034 over the 5,933 total in the last off-year election. James A. Potgeter, a Steamboat Rock Republican, claimed the largest margin of victory in his successful bid for state senator from the newly established Hardin-GrundyFranklin district. He becomes Hardin County’s first senator since the late R.R. Bateson of Eldora left the position in 1954.

Eagles fall late 63-58 to Ellsworth CC IOWA FALLS- A late 9-4 run lifted Ellsworth Community College over the Quakerdale Prep basketball team, 63-58 here Tuesday. Knotted 54-all with 3:09 remaining, the host Panthers send the Eagles to a fourth straight loss to start the season. Free throws helped ECC seal the deal accounting for five of the nine points, including four in the final 13-seconds. The Panthers made more free throws than the Eagles attempted, going 18-of-27 to 12-of-15. “We gave ourselves a chance to win and had it a one basket game to the end, that is all you can ask for,” stated Quakerdale coach Dustin Johnston. A short-handed Quakerdale held the lead most of the opening 20-minutes and played from behind, but within striking distance much of the second half. The Eagles had just seven of the roster’s 12 cagers suited. Down 54-50, Quakerdale pulled even on a Cole Barton field goal and two Chase White free throws. The visitors were just down 59-58 with 42-seconds showing on a Tyrees Sidberry bucket off a nifty assist from Barton. The Eagles owned leads of fivepoints in the first half at 19-14 and 25-20, and were up 30-23 before settling for a 30-25 halftime advantage. Quakerdale’s last lead was 40-39 when the Panthers had a 10-2 run fueled by three and two-point buckets for Ronald Blount. “We battled adversity with seven players and our toughness really stuck out. The defense really stepped up,” noted Johnston. White scored a game-high 20 points with teammates Mahrion Butler and Sidberry 13 each and six for

Teske, Vander Wilt tabbed MVRs for South Hardin XC by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORA- The South Hardin cross country team’s Most Valuable Runners were awarded to seasonlong scoring leaders senior Miquela Teske and sophomore Jacob Vander Wilt. Vander Wilt capped a stellar season at the state cross country meet as South Hardin’s lone entry. Vander Wilt, who placed 75th at state, led the Tigers’ scoring column all 10 meets, while posting three top 10 runs and five top 20s. He earned second-team all-conference honors, taking 19th at the North Iowa Cedar League meet. Teske led the South Hardin girl’s scoring column eight times and was second twice. She had two top 10 efforts, three top 20 and was honorable mention taking 26th at the conference meet. Top times for the two were 16:52 for Vander Wilt and 19:57 for Teske at the Union High Invite. Both times rank second best on the South Hardin leader board. Junior Chloe Webb and freshman Gavin Roy was named the team’s Most Improved and the Hardest Worker went to sophomore Jordan Carr and freshman Justin Meints. “Jacob was our leader in practice and meets,” said South Hardin coach Mike Olson. “He was competitive in every race. Some days were a grind, but you could always count on him.”
Vander Wilt was part of a youth movement for the Tigers as the sophomore was joined in the top seven in most meets by sophomore Cauy Teske and freshmen Meints, Kolby Winter, Roy, Alex Hassan and Chase Harvey. “The boys laid a good foundation for the upcoming years. We had a lot of young kids get productive varsity

Meints counted second for the Tigers in nine meets and third once, while Winter was second once and third four times with Teske third three times and Roy twice. Meints and Teske broke 18-minutes at 17:40 and 17:39, respectively, with top times for Winter at 18:02, Dorow 18:19, Roy 18:20 and Harvey 18:25. The guys ran well at the district meet and now we need to carry that over,” added Olson. The Tigers scored sixth in the 14-team Class 2A State Qualifying meet. Olson also noted seven seniors ended as four-year team members, including Dorow, Ted Dunn, Tom Haywood, Luke Bader, Layne Nelson, Zach Roll and Boe Deutmeyer. The South Hardin girls were short on numbers and booked a team score in just seven of the 10 meets with the top placing sixth at Ballard. “The girls worked hard, but it was a frustrating season. We were playing the numbers game and that hurt the motivation. I think it took something away when we were not competing for a high team finish,” stated Olson. “Miquela was a big part of our success over the past four seasons. She accomplished a lot,” added Ol-
