Home schooling at center stage
By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Here is a school where you’ll rarely find the kids all packed into one building, filling one playground – excepting special occasions where they gather at the Roundhouse in New Providence. It’s of course the school of the Hardin County Home Educators, found dispersed in homes around this and neighboring counties. You can see some the school’s best efforts when the Hardin County Home Educators High School Drama Club presents the comedy, “Hillbilly Reunion” on Friday and Saturday, November 18th and 19th at 7 p.m. at the New Providence Roundhouse (104 N Main, New Providence). There is no charge, but suggested donations at the door: Adults $5. Students $3. A silent pie auction will be held as a fundraiser for the Hardin County Home Educators Scholarship Fund. The play is written by Tim Kelly, and produced by special arrangement with Eldridge Publishing Company. The plays are a regular offering of the group of families who’ve chosen to school, in part or entirely, at home. Homeschooling has gone on in an organized way since 1992. Among the founders of the group were two families still active, Don and Connie Rose and Dan and Diane Nelson. Diane is the certified teacher contact between the Eldora-New Providence School District and the home educators. (continued on page 3)

Highway S-56 reopens at Steamboat Rock The road is open from Steamboat Rock to Eldora again. The 2016 bridge replacement project wound up without ceremony recently. Meanwhile weather has been kind to workers in Eldora who are moving to complete the summer 2016 phase of the Washington Street paving project. Both required detours around the respective communities, a challenge for truck drivers in particular. In Eldora it means new street, new storm sewers and curb and gutter slated to be done this fall. From the beginning the city was anticipating the sidewalk replacement might wait until spring.

Technology infusion at the high school By Rick Patrie News Editor SOUTH HARDIN – The South Hardin High School vocational agriculture department has recently taken delivery on a big inventory of 21st Century technology. And last week voc-ag instructor Greg Pfantz hosted the rest of the high school and the public in an evening’s open house, putting some of the acquisitions out on display. The timing was no coincidence, as the school had taken possession of several units early this fall. Voc-ag took the lead and invited the business, industrial arts, and the family and consumer sciences department to share the spotlight as well. A key attraction, Pfantz’ new pair of welding simulators. They mimic – virtually – the welding experience. The idea is to give students a runthrough on a welder-simulator, give
them the feel of the process, and do it without wasting raw material. After practice, the students almost invariably take to actual welding more fluidly and more accurately, Pfantz says. The welding simulators came to the department by virtue of a couple of key donations. One was from the Hardin County Community Endowment, which last April put $7,500 toward the purchases. Then the Hardin County Farm Bureau kicked in more help. A number of other local interests also helped out with smaller donations, Pfantz said. Pfantz says he has about three dozen students involved in the welding experience, in both his welding class and an entry vocational agriculture class. Meanwhile, in another room, the industrial arts, building trades department offered some samples (continued on page 4)
By Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – It was the year North Vietnam and the United States signed the Paris Peace accords and broke off most hostilities. It was also 43 years ago, when a suggestion came forward from the local American Legion and VFW posts that the school district join veterans in celebrating contributions service members had made to the country. Gene Foster with the Legion and VFW, Jan Ruhde, a high school English instructor, and Clem Marsden, who was a school principal at the time, began the project which continues to today. Annually, the initiative has enlisted students from the smallest to the graduating senior. It has featured bands from all the schools, choirs and choruses, and would eventually marshal the well-known parade of flags bearing Foster’s name. It all came together on Veterans Day 1973 for the first time. Servicemen and women have always been the guests of honor, but the children play the most colorful roles. By the 1992’s renewal of the project, Foster was announcing he would like to retire. In December of that year the
newspaper was announcing as much. “Unknown to most of the people attending this years (then the 19th celebration) this was to be Foster’s last year serving as coordinator for the event….” “He resigned from all duties effective December 31 of 1992. As it turned out the newspaper had gotten a little ahead of its own story. Foster found himself unable to replace himself. But in November of 2001, the Eldora Newspaper went out on a limb and reported once more: “This year’s program will be extra special for Foster, as it will be his last as coordinator for the event.” “After 28 years in charge of the Veterans Day program at the EldoraNew Providence Schools, I have decided to retire.” A compulsive collector, he kept a copy of that paper, and in September of 2002, he wrote himself a note at the bottom: “No one is taking my job.” So, he was back again the next year. In time Foster’s retirement actually did stick. Today the program is a project of the servicemen’s groups, and a volunteer from the staff at the high school. Fourty-three years and counting.

Stars and Stripes on parade since 1973 Another red white and blue milestone Another long running veteran project made a milestone this year. The Eldora Newspapers for nearly 30 years has been publishing a special section in which the accumulated photos of veterans are recalled right before each Veteran’s Day. Only as far back as the year 2000 we had just 32 pictures to include. This year we topped 400. You submit the photo once and it is printed forever, so if you have a veteran to remember, living or deceased, contact the papers about next year’s edition. The salute this year was in the November 8 edition of the Ledger. Shown to the right is part of the contingent of elementary school color bearers during Fridays other Veteran Day observance.

Home schooling at center stage (continued from page 1) Families to different degrees take advantage of a home school assistance program offered by the Eldora based schools, but beginning back in 2013, the state legislature voted to grant home schooling families a wide latitude as to how much they associated with the public schools or not, and how much assessment is done on the progress of learning. The state has of late taken to stance, that parental rights are preeminent in the state. On all there are 38 families right now and close to a hundred kids from Hardin Hamilton, Story, Frankline, Butler, Grundy and
(from the website of the Hardin County Home Educators, here is a history of the movement’s development. On May 9, 1992, two moms invited the families they were aware of in the area who were interested in homeschooling to join us at a family picnic. Five other families attended in addition to the original two families. In conversation that night, it was decided that the moms would meet once a month with the meeting moving from community to community. A meeting was planned for moms to share curriculum and teaching methods. We also determined that night to plan a field trip and a family activity once every three months. There grew a strong bond between those initial families in the first year. The name Hardin County Home Educators was selected. By the time the school year began in 1993, there were 24 families that had joined HCHE. After moving the meetings from

Marshall County. The families gather for a couple of cooperative classes every month in the Round House and have a program of sports and traditional extra curricula activities, I clouding lots of field trips. The play is an example. Some members are dual enrolled both as home scholars and formally part of the school district, taking advantage of classes in E-NP and extra curricular activities there. As recently as three years ago press reports said home schooling within the boundaries of the E-NP district was up around 8.5 percent, and indicated that the norm throughout the state is closer to 2.5. “Hillbilly Reunion” on Friday and Saturday, November 18th and 19th at 7 p.m. at the New Providence Roundhouse

place to place the first year, it was decided to hold them in a permanent location. Mom’s meetings were held the second Tuesday of each month while dads organized a very popular activity - Gym Night. The purpose of the mom’s meetings was for discussion, support, and education. There were no business meetings, no committees, and no board. The church where the group met had a moms’ group. In order for homeschool moms to attend, there needed to be a place for their kids while the moms met. Two homeschool moms, therefore, began offering classes at the church for homeschool students while the mothers attended the moms’ group. In addition to those classes, HCHE events that year included a wonderful pioneer field trip, a day in a one-room schoolhouse, a family bowling party, a family bike hike, and a musical about the Ten Commandments presented by the kids. A monthly newsletter was created and was hand-addressed and sent to each family. At the end of
that second year, we organized the oldest kids (upper elementary and middle school age kids) into an annual staff, and they created the first HCHE annual. By 1996, 44 families were members of HCHE. Hardin County Home Educators sponsored events like a citizenship essay contest and a dramatic Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln presentation by Illinois professional Lincoln impersonators, Max and Donna Daniel. The families of HCHE organized a homeschool conference which was held that April. It was well attended by people from across the state. In the fall of 1997, HCHE began offering education classes. The first classes offered were speech, paper cutting, patriotism, the solar system, and Spanish. Students of all ages presented the play, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Moms began meeting one Saturday morning a month for breakfast, sometimes meeting in homes, and other times meeting at restaurants.

It was an opportunity to get better acquainted and to find support among other homeschool moms. A dad began classes to teach the fundamentals of basketball. Those initial classes led eventually to the HCHE Chargers basketball teams from elementary through high school. The group held tournaments, which lasted from early morning until late into the evening, were a highlight for players and fans alike. A homeschool mom and caterer, organized fantastic food stands, and HCHE parents and kids worked to feed the crowds of people. HCHE girls and boys teams were very competitive at several private school invite tournaments. A trophy case displays the many trophies won. In 2006 a HCHE boys basketball team competed in the National Homeschool Basketball Tournament in Wichita, Kansas, finishing second, and in 2007 and 2008 the HCHE boys basketball team competed in the National Homeschool Basketball Championships in Oklahoma City finishing in the Final Four. American Legion Flag essay While Election Day meant visiting polling stations for many, for several South Hardin fifth graders it meant appreciation for Old Glory. Walter Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion met with students in October and introduced a patriotic contest. The challenge was to write in their own words what the American Flag meant to them. The American Legion offered a first place prize of $75, second $50 and third $25 as a reward for their efforts. Utilizing in class work time and personal research at home, the students were able to exceed our expectations. This year our judges were Post Commander Dwight Clark, Legion Student Ambassador Megan Paul, and fifth grade Language Arts teacher Kelsey Nilles.

In recent weeks the department has helped a local business startup fit out a shop uptown in Eldora, and it has worked at trimming out last details on the Ellis Church building which was moved to the site of the Hardin County Farm Museum from its long time home north of Buckeye. The school’s business department
took advantage of computer and related equipment to show some of the studies its students take on. The family and consumer science department brought information on its current Windmill Café project, and even came to the open house with an infant simulator used to train students in proper care of the very smallest of children. In addition to the welding simulators, the voc-ag department also acquired advanced equipment with which they can analyze and alter laboratory
specimens – even manipulate genetic material. Pfantz says it put the small lab on an equipment par with some colleges. And finally, the ag department recently took possession of a CNC plasma cutter, which teams a computer with the moveable cutting bench. The tool can be programmed to make multiple sample cuts simultaneously.
Our American Flag
by Jenna Kosanke Fifth Grade Essay Winner There is only on reason why we live in a free country and it’s because of our allegiance to the American flag. This flag was fought for. As a country we deserve this flag and respect it with all of our American hearts. Have you ever heard the star spangled banner and wondered why it was written? It was written in honor of the great flag that still brings us liberty today. Some people say why? Why should I care about some silly old flag? I know you might not have the same opinion s me but in my own words I will tell you what the American flag means to me. When I was little I was always taught that the flag was a sign of hope, faith and freedom. However as I’m growing up my parents tell me more and more about this amazing banner. But the way I see it today it is the reason why soldiers no matter what the cost carry on in battle. Why they have no fear about losing their lives. Why the fight for us. So to me the flag means keep going and never give up. Now that you know what the flag means to me I hope that you will think about the things I’ve said and continue to cherish the great emblem and treat it with respect as many people do. Those are the reasons why I love my flag Old Glory.

Patricia “Pat” Bakker Patricia Sue Bakker, 66 of Pueblo, Colorado, formerly of Grundy Center, went home to her Lord on October 26, 2016 at The Oasis Assisted Living Home under the care of Campussus Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Nathan Barkley officiating. Patricia “Pat” was born on February 10, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Vail and Lorraine (Taylor) Hess. She grew up in rural Grundy Center on the family farm, where she attended and graduated from Grundy Center High School in the class of 1968. Pat married Jerry Bakker in 1970, which they were later divorced. They welcomed a son into their family in 1975. Pat worked as the office manager for a dentist office for 25 years before retiring in the early 1990’s. She also enjoyed volunteering for various civic events/causes in Grundy Center and was especially proud of her work on the Felix Grundy Festival. Pat enjoyed helping others with their needs, which she always put before her own. She also enjoyed baking and cooking, especially for family and friends. What brought the most joy to Pat was spending time with her family, especially her son and daughter-in-law and her two grandchildren. Pat is survived by her son Rob (Heather) Bakker of Waukee, Iowa and granddaughters Katelyn and Hailey Bakker. Also surviving are three siblings, sister Rebecca (Cork) Peterson of Reinbeck, Iowa, brother Douglas Hess of Pueblo, Colorado, and sister Judith Hess of Chicago, Illinois, along with a nephew, numerous cousins and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Evelyn Oppold Lawless, 99, of Eldora and more recently Iowa Falls, passed away November 10, 2016 at Hansen Memorial Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Eldora, Iowa on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Eldora. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with a prayer service concluding the visitation at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be made to the Lawless family at www. abelsfuneralhomes.com Evelyn was born on January 15, 1917, on the family farm near Ackley, Iowa to Robert and Gertrude (Lamm) Oppold, the oldest of eight children. She graduated from Ackley High School followed by St. Mercy Nursing School at Mason City in 1938. She was united in marriage to Harry Lawless on June 30, 1943, prior to Harry’s being shipped overseas during WWII. Evelyn will be remembered as a gracious lady of deep faith who displayed a loving, caring attitude whether it be in her nursing career, of which she took much pride, her family or her many friends (she never met a stranger). Her most enjoyable times were with Harry at her side, entertaining friends and family with a superb home cooked meal, a game of bridge, and traveling extensively. She truly cherished the many visits by family and friends in
her later years and catching up on their families and activities. Evelyn knew what it meant to “listen” to others. She will be remembered especially by her grandchildren and great grandchildren for the many games of Chinese checkers and dominos, and was known to even “cheat” a little. Besides her career as a private duty and surgical nurse, and raising a family on the farm, Evelyn was active at St. Mary Catholic Church serving on various committees and being a part of several study groups. She was also very active with the Hardin County Chapter of the American Cancer Society serving for a period as President. In later years, she devoted time each week to reading to the residents at the Eldora nursing facilities and working at the Hardin County Blood Bank. Evelyn is survived by four children, John (Mary) Lawless of Ankeny, Iowa, Mary Beth Richards of West Des Moines, Iowa, Maureen Belzer of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Steve Lawless of Viroqua, Wisconsin; daughter-in-law, Bev Lawless of Emily, Minnesota and her sister, Ruth Scallon of Iowa Falls. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Jay (Renea) Simpson of Olathe, Kansas, Lisa (Marlin) Veldkamp of Des Moines, Iowa, David (Corrie) Richards of Waukee, Iowa, Andrea (Mark) Travillian of Frisco, Texas, Kathryn (Eric) Watts of Overland Park, Kansas, John (Sarah) Lawless of Mundelein, Illinois, Megan (Paul) Watts of Great Falls, Montana, Francis Lawless of Sitka, Alaska, and Ella Lawless of Ashville, North Carolina. She was blessed with 10 great grandchildren, CJ and Amaya Veldkamp, Violet and Ophelia Richards, Max Travillian, Sophie, Brady and Mia Watts, Charlie and Kate Watts and Owen Lawless. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry; her son, Patrick and granddaughter, Lori Richards.

South Hardin netters capture 8-win season
by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORA- The first net campaign under new head coach Greg Salvo ended with marks of 8-21 in matches and 26-54 in games for the South Hardin volleyball team. “The expectations were not met,” stated Salvo. “I was hoping for a better record and I felt we had four or five matches that we should have won and didn’t.” He added, “I’m not in any way disappointed in the girls. So Hardin, BCLUW girls have openers
Nina Priske, Dru Balvanz and Sammy May. Inconsistency was costly according to Salvo. “We were not consistent in our game. One match we served well and didn’t pass well and the next it would be flipped. And we had a lot of hitting errors.” Despite the record, Salvo noted the Tigers were playing their best volleyball at the end of the season. “I felt we played some of our best volleyball at the end of the year. We were figuring out the formula.” South Hardin owned a 4-5 mark through nine bouts with a pair of conference wins, and then went just 4-16 over the season’s final 20 matches. The Tigers finished fifth in the North Iowa Cedar League West Conference at 2-4 with the wins over East Marshall and GladbrookReinbeck. Balvanz was selected first-team all-conference, Tripp second-team and Priske honorable mention. “I appreciated that several of the conference coaches noted how our program had become more competitive this season. We played a lot of teams well, but didn’t get over the hump and win,” said Salvo. Ryan and Tripp led the South Hardin stats. Ryan had team-highs with 151 kills and 273 digs, while Tripp was tops in serving with 29 aces and a .984 serving percent with just five misses in 307 attempts. She was also right behind Ryan in digs at 269. Priske was second in kills with 130 and had a team-best .120 kill efficiency, while the team had just a .057 kill efficiency. Balvanz added 115 kills, junior JoJo Keahey 72 and Tripp 52. Vander Wilt was credited with 231 assists and Balvanz 225. After Tripp at the back line, Balvanz landed 25 service aces and Vander Wilt 21, and junior Rachel Weber had a .929 serving going, going 208-of-224. Defensively, Weber added 150 digs, junior Paige Harrell 133 and Balvanz 129 to go with 37 blocks and 40 blocks for Priske. Three-year career totals for Balvanz were 211 kills, 1,060 assists, 368 digs, 88 service aces and 85 blocks; for Priske 289 kills and 86 blocks; for Ryan 274 kills, 617 digs and 37 service aces, and for Tripp 123 kills, 638 digs, 56 service aces and a .951 serving percent with just 34 missed serves, going 674-of-708, including 162-of-174 as a sophomore and 210-of-227 as a junior.
