At annual awards program —
Ida County 4-Hers recognized S everal Ida County 4-Hers received recognition Nov. 6 at the annual Ida County 4-H awards program in Ida Grove. Merit awards were presented to 4-Hers who demonstrated outstanding participation in 4-H activities at the club and county levels. They were presented to juniors Taya Phillips (Ida High Achievers) and Margo McMillen (Maple Huskies); intermediates Tate Phillips (Ida High Achievers) and Madeline Else (Battle Badgers) and seniors Anna Van Dusen (Logan Hotshots) and Ryan Paulsrud (Ida High Achievers). Ryan Paulsrud was awarded with the outstanding 4-H award for showing outstanding leadership, involvement and who has been a good role model in their club and county. Youth leadership awards were presented to senior members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in 4-H at the county level and beyond. Claire Sohm, Maple Huskies and Baylee Knop, Blaine Clovers, were this year’s recipients. Citizenship awards went to Sage Bennett and Montana Else, both of the Battle Badgers 4-H Club. Lexi Phillips with the Ida High Achievers and Claire Sohm with the Maple Huskies received communications awards. Outstanding record book awards went to juniors—Collin Grove (Blaine Clovers) and Lauren McMillen (Maple Huskies) and intermediates—Kylee Weber (Maple Huskies) and Elizabeth Zobel (Grant 4-Hers). Evan Else (Ida High Achievers) received the outstanding longtime record book award. Outstanding other record awards went to Madeline Else, Battle Badgers; Sage Bennett, Battle Badgers; Montana Else, Battle Badgers; Ryan Paulsrud, Ida High Achievers and Ethan Zobel, Grant 4-Hers. Livestock project awards went to Lance Else, Ida High Achievers, beef; Kylee Weber, Maple Huskies, horse; Sage Bennett, Battle Badgers, rabbit; Zoe Verschoor, Maple Huskies, sheep and Anna Van Dusen, Logan Hotshots, swine. The “I Dare You” award went to Anna Van Dusen with the Logan Hotshots and Evan Else with the Ida High Achievers. Battle Badger Sage Bennett received the Ak-Sar-Ben award. Herdsmanship awards went to Blaine Clovers for beef; Grant Champions for sheep; Ida High Achievers for swine; Logan Hotshots for horse; tie between Battle Badgers and Maple Huskies for goat; tie between Battle Badgers and Maple Huskies for poultry and tie between Battle Badgers and Grant Champions for rabbit. The Logan Hotshots won the best fair booth award. The Blaine Clovers 4-H Club won the Lester Freese Traveling Trophy attendance contest award for the highest attendance at the awards program last year and the fair clean-up days. Sage Bennett and Montana Else, both of the Battle Badgers, were the recipients of Ida County 4-H Foundation Scholarships. Receiving the club leader of the year award was Teresa McMillen with the Clover Kids. Adult awards were presented to Krista Lukins (alumni award), Rick McBride (honorary 4-H member) and Ida County Cattlemen (meritorious service). Bob Paulsrud was recognized for induction into the
2016 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Clover Kids: Clover Kids is a 4-H group for children in grades kindergarten through third grade. Children participate in hands-on activities designed to build life skills before being able to participate in an active 4-H club in fourth grade. Adult awards: Every year, numerous people are nominated in four categories: alumni award, honorary member, meritorious service award and the leader of the year award. The alumni award is awarded to a past 4-H member who has continued to support 4-H after graduation. The honorary member is awarded to a person who has supported the program even though they were not a member of 4-H. The meritorious service award is given for outstanding service above and beyond the call of duty. And the leader of the year award is given to a leader who is nominated by 4-H members.
