THANK YOU THANK YOU During this time of sorrow, we learn how much our family and friends mean to us. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness at a time when it was much needed and deeply appreciated! From the Family of Carol Omans THANK YOU To the Clients of Carol’s Tax and Accounting: Through the 40 plus years of completing taxes, Carol’s list of clients has grown. These clients have also become friends. Carol was very protective of her clients and as she was finally looking to slow down, she had begun the search for someone that would be a “good fit” for her clients. Carol had found that group and was working with them at the time of her passing. I am currently working with this group to fulfill Carol’s wish to take care of her clients. We will have news very soon. Thank you for your years of trust. Sincerely, Carol’s son Jeff

BRITT - Jeffry Stampohar, CPHA, has been named Administrator/CEO at Hancock County Health System (HCHS) by the Board of Trustees. He will begin his duties at HCHS on January 11, 2016. “We are confident that Jeffry will be a valuable asset to HCHS as his skills and extensive knowledge in health care will benefit the organization as well as the greater community,“ said Mary Kopacek, Chairperson of the HCHS Board of Trustees. “He comes to us with more than 25 years of experience in health care administration. GARNER – Hancock County supervisors had a light agenda on Monday, Dec. 28. The board scheduled a hearing in connection to an existing pork facility in Liberty Township for 10 a.m., Jan. 11. B&J Pork proposes increasing the animal unit capacity at a pork finisher facility to 1,760 animal units (4,400 head of finishing swine), with no new construction. County supervisors approved payroll change for Amy Reynolds, who completed her 6-month probationary status in the Treasurer’s Office. The board also approved a change in pay for Jennifer Roberts, county communications employee. In other recent business, the Hancock County fair board and the Britt Draft
Horse Association presented their annual funding requests on Dec. 21. The fair board requested $34,500 for the Hancock County Fair and $1,500 for dust control on roads at the fairgrounds. Randy Hiscocks, fair board president, said the main project at the fairgrounds for 2016 is electrical upgrades in addition to general maintenance. The new three-seasons building is complete and the fair board purchased some land in 2015. The Britt Draft Horse Association is requesting $1,000 or $1,200. The funding for the annual Britt Draft Horse Show goes toward advertising and educational purposes, Hiscocks noted. Both funding requests will be taken under consideration when the board begins work on the county budget for fiscal 2016-17.

Kids have Christmas break plans the holiday. Emilie Jenson leadernews.map@gmail.com
The Christmas holiday has passed, the gifts are open, and the kids are still out of school for a week, but several elementary students from West Hancock have plans that will keep them occupied until it is time to go back to class. Gustavo Gomez, a second grader said he had Christmas plans, but wasn’t sure what he would do with the remainder of his time off. “We’ll have a party and open presents on Christmas Eve,” he said. Second grader Kaleb Brown was also excited enough about his Christmas gifts waiting under the tree to not be sure what he was going to do past
“I’m going to open presents, and on the 26th we’ll open more presents,” said Brown. Natalie Hernandez said she would sleep in on the days with no school, but, like most children, she, too, had her mind on the holiday. “I’m going to open up lots of presents,” she said. Third grader Creighton Kelly hoped it would snow so he could keep his Christmas break plans. “I’ll play in the snow if we get any,” he said. “If we do then we will pull people around in a tire behind the Gator.” Nathaniel Spencer, a third grader, said he would enjoy a few holiday treats.
“I’m going to eat a lot of cookies,” he said. “And I’ll open presents.” Spencer also had some hopeful plans that depended on the weather. “I know I am getting a sled, so I hope I get to play with the sled in snow.” Reign Krumwiede said he’d spend time indoors, but using his imagination. “I’m going to rebuild all of my lego sets,” he said. Still, most had their Christmas in mind, or spending a little time with family. “I’ll go see both of my grandmas,” said Sienna Weiland. Her classmate, Demaris Guido had some travel plans to the other side of the state. “We’ll go to Muscatine” he said.

Fundraising dollars help to fund research for screening to detect cancer early, to find new treatments and cures for cancer, to assist people during their cancer journey and to fight back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer. Hailey Manternach, chair of the University of Northern Iowa’s Relay For Life, will be the guest speaker. “We encourage and invite anyone interested in celebrating the lives of those faced with cancer, remembering those who have lost their battle with cancer, and fighting back so no one ever has to hear the words, ‘You have cancer,’” said Webner. “Join this world-wide fight against cancer!” The 2016 Hancock County Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society will be held Saturday, June 18 at Garner.
