Local food bank sees increase in usage Rebecca Peter

gleadernews@qwestoffice.net GARNER – On Thursday, families and communities will gather around the dinner table to give thanks for the abundance of food before them and the blessings of the past year. However there are families who struggle to put Thanksgiving on the table. That’s where local food banks come in. Shirley Brown is volunteer coordinator for God’s Pantry in Garner. The community food bank is locat-

ed at 855 Maben Ave. (the Garner United Methodist Church). Brown said he has seen an increase in the number of persons coming to God’s Pantry for assistance for the past eight years. He believes one possible reason is due to the lengthening of ability of a person to draw unemployment to two years. Another reason is that the purchasing power of the dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to. “Everything has gone up,” he said. “For the elderly - folks on a GOD’S PANTRY to page 2

The school will continue to use their rollout signs as needed. “I would hate to do more than what’s needed,” said Police Chief Dan Cummings. “Then everybody will be complaining.” Also at the meeting was Drew Sweers from V&K to discuss doing a topographical survey for the city’s industrial park. A Hancock County Christmas tradition is the Angel Tree Project at Britt and Garner. Angel trees are located at Clear Lake Bank and Trust, Reliance State Bank in Garner and at First State Bank and at Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in Britt. “This year we will be having “angel” and “present” cutouts to pick from the trees,” according to Amber Jenniges, Garner Chamber of Commerce director. “This gives an opportunity for more community members to pick from the tree and to ensure that each angel get a present that is age-appropriate.” Here’s how the Angel Tree Project works: Each angel has a description of clothing needs and size for children and teens, ages 10 months to 17-years old. You can help by picking an angel from the Angel Tree, purchasing a gift for the child as described on the angel (the child’s age, sex, clothing sizes), and returning the wrapped gift with the angel attached to the Angel Tree. To ensure delivery, return the gift ANGEL TREE to page 2

GOD’S PANTRY from page 1 fixed income - there hasn’t been maybe but one or two increases in Social Security in the last 8 to 9 years.” Brown noted ten years ago, there were about 10 to12 families who utilized God’s Pantry on a regular basis. “Today we’re having between 105 to 125 families per month,” he said. “I think that’s a significant increase.” Elderly persons on fixed incomes as well as families come in. Others who stop are transitory folks. “I helped a guy out who was living in his van,” Brown said. “He didn’t take anything you had to cook.” Approximately 35 volunteers arrived at the Methodist church to box “holiday packages,” which were distributed Monday morning. The packages contained a 4-pound canned ham, frozen turkey breasts, gravy, stovetop stuffing, green beans, French onions, cream of mushroom soup, cranberry sauce, pancake mix and syrup, cake mix, frosting, oatmeal, yams refrigerated rolls, and fruit. “There’s enough for a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal,” Brown said. God’s Pantry coordinates with local churches to sign up volunteers to help out. “But, we don’t turn any help down,” he added. Persons interested in volunteering should, contact Brown at 641-430-4716. God’s Pantry in Garner is open on Mondays 9-11 a.m. and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m.

GHV BOARD from page 1 system at the high school and the shift from issuing students MacBook Pro computers to Chrome Books at the high school. “I’ve been impressed with how well our students and staff have rolled with it,” she remarked. “What I love about [Chrome books] from an educator standpoint is that we don’t lose educational time.” The sale of the district’s used MacBook Pro computers generated about $70,000, which went into the schools general fund. “Technology, as you know, has just exploded,” commented Tyler Williams, school superintendent. “It’s been a major expense in everyone’s budget that wasn’t there 15 years ago, and it’s not going away.” “Technology is not the outcome,” Haag added. “Technology is the tool.” Dianne Hinders, Curriculum Coordinator, reported that the state of Iowa will be transitioning to “Smarter Balanced Assessments” for math and English language arts, beginning with the 2017-18 school year. The “Smarter Balanced Assessments” will be administered to students in grades 3-11, and will replace the current Iowa Assessment exams. According to the state Department of Education website, the assessments provide a more detailed picture of student learning by providing specific information on which skills students have mastered and where

they need additional support. They also help ensure students are on track for the next grade and, eventually, college and the workforce. Jim Haag, high school principal, commented Smarter Balanced Assessments will force students to think more critically. In his report, Haag said parent participation by parents in parent-teacher conferences at the high school was up about 5 percent. The district continues to reach out to parents whose students are struggling school. Recent athletic highlights include the GHV boys cross country team placing 5th at the state meet. The cheerleaders placed 4th at a recent competition. The high school production of the musical “Beauty and the Beast” was a success, Haag said. He congratulated the cast, directors, and crew who were involved in the production. The Veterans Day program at the high school on Nov. 11 was well-received. “It’s a wonderful outreach to our community,” he said. The high school remodel/expansion project “is on the home stretch,” Haag said. He will be meeting with architects to do a punch list of the classroom additions in the near future. The wrestling team has had its first practice in the new wrestling room. Employee of the Month Lorene Dykstra, Lakeside Alternative High School program director

was named the GHV Employee of the Month. Dykstra was nominated by fellow teachers at GHV. Dykstra has had 20 years as secondary principal with four years at Ventura. She then restarted Lakeside Alternative High school program and is in her ninth year doing that. She will have completed a total of 43 in education. Other board action includes the following: • Voted to offer early retirement benefits to certified staff this year with a $10,000 benefit for health insurance with no other policy changes. • Accepted the retirement resignation of Lorene Dykstra, Lakeside Alternative Program Director, effective at the end of the school year. The board thanked Dykstra for her years of service. The board also accepted the resignation of Loretta Roth, paraprofessional. • Matt Fank was approved as a volunteer coach for girls basketball. Melodie Skinner was hired as a parttime paraprofessional. • Approved authority for Drop Out Prevention (Allowable Growth) funding. • Discussed district policy on reimbursement for meals. The board will take up the discussion again in December. Board members were reminded that starting in January, the monthly meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. They will also begin the annual policy review in January.

BRITT COUNCIL from page 1 features so potential developers can get a better idea of what it will take to build structures on the grounds. “I think we’ve gotten move on this as fast as we can,” said council member Mike Ostercamp. “We can’t offer anything for sale if we don’t know what we’ve got.” In other business, the council discussed the possibility of increasing the water deposit for rental properties. Residents that move out of a rental home or apartment without paying off their water bill has become a frequent occurrence. Because the amount owed exceeds the amount of the deposit, the remainder of the balance is assessed to the property owner. “We probably have an angry landlord once a month or every other month,” said City Administrator Shell Anderson. Raising the water deposit was suggested, however the council was uncomfortable with setting a policy that would affect the entire city. Instead, it was decided that it would be more appropriate for landlords to ask for larger deposits instead. “I don’t like the idea of changing an ordinance that affects everybody

to solve the landlord’s problem,” said Mayor Ryan Arndorfer. “I don’t believe it’s on us to do it,” said council member Curt Gast. Finally, the council discussed the city’s policy for the compost site. The city has established a compost pile for residential use, however it has been reported that some residents are excessively taking advantage of the free material. “There’s a lot gone already,” said Gast. “Somebody’s been out there scooping it up with a loader.” The intention of the pile was to allow residents to come in and take a little bit at a time for their gardens and yards, however it’s suspected that some people are taking large amounts out of the pile for commercial purposes. “If they are getting paid to spread our compost, then that’s a problem to me,” said Gast.” The council discussed fencing around the pile to discourage people from using large machinery or offering the compost for sale for large amounts once the community has had a chance to get their use out of the pile. “I think the residents should get first pick,” said Ostercamp.

Never Too Late

2016 is definitely the year of unexpected things. The Cubs won the world series, that… other thing happened (we’ll get back to that next week), but most exciting for me is the news that “Young Justice” will be getting a third season. “Young Justice,” for those that don’t know, was an animated series from Warner Bros. Animation that centered around a team of DC Comics sidekicks. It easily ranks among the best super hero shows that Warner Bros. has produced, and that’s no small feat. By all accounts, “Young Justice” should not have worked. Half the cast consisted of obscure characters that even few comic fans would recognize and the show didn’t adapt any pre-established incarnation of the Teen Titans or Young Justice from the comic books. Instead of adapting a particular era of continuity from the DC comics, the show mixed and matched characters and histories in a way that made them familiar, but distinct. Abandoning the episodic, continuity-free style of other shows of its time, “Young Justice” felt like a return to the older “Justice League Unlimited” series, with character In this section: driven episodes, a heavy emphasis Marketplace • Classifieds • on Public Notices continuity, and an overarching Church • Courthouse News • Obituaries for being a show W story. , a Ironically, 20, 2014 . . | S B about teenage super heroes, “Young Justice” is probably the most mature series Warner Bros. the toy executives that funded the show and it was canceled after two seasons. “Young Justice” was funded based on a toy deal with Mattel and while the show itself generated critical acclaim, that acclaim didn’t translate into action figure sales. When Mattel canceled the toy line, the show went with it. Like so many other great shows, “Young Justice” ended before its time. This is not uncommon. The animation landscape is littered with great shows that got cut down in their prime, often on cliffhangers that will forever go unresolved. Since 2013, it seemed like “Young Justice” would join the ranks of “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Wolverine and the X-Men.” In spite of this grim reality a surprisingly persistent fanbase has been pestering showrunner Greg Weisman about a third season. Much like how Joss Whedon to this day still fields questions about “Firefly” coming back, Weisman has the somber task of shooting down the hopes of fans looking for a chance that “Young Justice” could see a revival. I’ve seen it in person. The sad reality is that no amount of fan petitions and internet chatter is going to bring back a show that didn’t turn a profit. Or is it? Earlier this year, “Young Justice” made it to Netflix and Weisman changed his tune, hinting that fans should take the opportunity to rewatch it. Since then rumors have circulated about Netflix funding the much desired continuation. The petitions came back, the internet chatter increased, and finally, two weeks ago, Warner Bros. Ani-

mation announced that “Young Justice” was coming back.” This does not happen. For a show to get canceled as a financial failure, only to be revived three years later, is unprecedented as far as I know. It’s not confirmed that Netflix will be financially backing the new season, but that appears to be the most likely scenario. If so, that’s something of a game changer. Since the 80s, the animation industry has been heavily tied to the toy industry. Toy lines weren’t created to profit off of cartoons, cartoons were created to advertise for toy lines. This practice is still prevalent today, though to a lesser degree. The fact remains though that, in many cases, the number of people watching a show doesn’t matter when it comes to deciding if the show will continue. The only viewers that matter are the ones that also go out and buy into the toy line. Netflix obviously doesn’t have that interest. Their financial model is to throw money at popular things to convince as many people as possible to stay subscribed for another month. For Warner Bros., this makes “Young Justice” a much easier sell. They know they have a rabid fanbase that will go to great lengths to watch the show. That’s exactly the kind of thing Netflix is looking for. Who would have thought that undying fandom and pointless internet petitions could actually get something done? Travis Fischer is a news writer for Mid-America Publishing and wants a second season of ABC’s “Sonic the Hedgehog.” It’s only been 22 years. There’s still time for a revival, right?

Things every senior should know about Medicare

Medicare open enrollment starts October 15. There are three enrollment periods during which you can sign up for Medicare. Initial enrollment - The first time you can sign up for Medicare is called the Initial Enrollment Period. This is a 7-month window that begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after your birthday. If you sign up during the Initial Enrollment Period, you can sign up for a plan without answering any medical questions. General enrollment period - If you don’t sign up before you turn age 65, there is a general enrollment period in which you can sign up between January 1 and March 31 each year. Special enrollment period is only available to individuals that meet certain requirements. Medicare Part A helps cover your inpatient care in hospitals. Think of it as hospital insurance. Medicare Part A will help cover your medical costs when you are already sick. This also includes coverage in critical access hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, hospice and home health care. It does not cover long-term care Medicare Part B covers preventative care and is medical insurance. Think of Part B as in the word “before.” Medicare part B covers the costs before you become sick or injured. Routine check-ups with your doctor are the types of expenses covered by Part B. Sometimes there is confusion as to what Medicare will and will not cover. Medicare only covers 80 per-

PEOPLE & EVENTS

cent of the cost for Medicare-covered services. For example, if you are hospitalized and leave with a bill of $10,000, Medicare will only cover 80 percent, leaving you with a $2,000 bill. You will have to pay that bill out of pocket. In addition, basic Medicare does not include drug coverage. You would have to cover your medication costs out of pocket if you do not have a prescription drug plan. There are several types of Medicare Supplemental Plans. Medicare Advantage or Part C plans combine your Part A and Part B coverage and act as your primary insurance. Private insurance companies provide the Medicare Part C coverage. They typically include prescription drug coverage. Medicare Supplement or Medigap plans cover the 20 percent of costs that Medicare does not cover. There are different plans that provide different levels of coverage. Medicare Prescription Drug or Part D plans help offset the costs associated with your medications. There are different plans with varying costs and coverage. Speak with a Medicare specialist in order to help you find the right plan. When you enroll in Medicare or any Medicare program, you should ensure that your doctor accepts Medicare insurance and payments. Review your plan annually. The annual enrollment period each year runs from October 15 to December 7. Call Elderbridge at 1-800-243-0678 to set up an appointment with a SHIIP Counselor to talk about your Medicare options.

Iowa near top of U.S. rural income growth

By David Peters, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach AMES, Iowa - The United States Census Bureau released its report on income and poverty in urban and rural America in September. While the report focused on nationwide trends, Iowa State University associate professor and extension rural sociologist David Peters was more interested in how rural Iowans had been affected over the last decade. “The results were a bit surprising,” Peters said. “Despite recent concerns of a decline in rural Iowa’s income, this proved not to be the case. Over the last decade, rural households are doing well and, in fact, are doing better than urban Iowans and better than other rural areas in this country. The statistics certainly fly counter to the narrative that you can’t make a living in rural Iowa.” The 2015 median household income in rural Iowa was $60,223, almost 11 percent higher than urban incomes ($51,705). Rural Iowans also have become wealthier than rural residents in other states. After being on par with national rural averages prior to 2012, incomes of rural Iowans were about 10 percent higher than those living outside the state. “I would have suspected rural incomes to go up and down mirroring market trends,” Peters said. “When commodity prices were high we didn’t see a huge jump in income and didn’t see a corresponding decline as prices have gone down.” Peters attributes that steadiness to a decoupling of farm and rural economies. Many rural residents are able to easily commute to larger cities for jobs, meaning that for many residents income is consistent even when farm commodity prices decline. “Unlike states like Nebraska or

the Dakotas, Iowa has a number of fairly good sized cities spread out throughout the state,” Peters said. “Most rural Iowans can reach one of these cities after driving for only 25-30 minutes. People who choose to live in small towns can still easily be engaged in a meaningful career in larger cities.” Incomes in rural Iowa have also grown faster than those in urban parts of the state. Since 2005, the median income of rural Iowans has grown by 9.6 percent while urban Iowans have seen their income grow by just 3.7 percent. Iowa ranks 21st nationally in rural median income, with its rural income growth of nearly 10 percent over the last decade the sixth-highest growth

rate in the country. Conversely, Iowa has the 30th highest urban income average and its 3.7 percent growth is 26th-best. “Iowa needs to focus on professional service jobs,” Peters said. “High-end technology and service jobs are wonderful to target, and Iowa should continue to pursue those type of jobs. However, the state has to pay attention to middle skill jobs because they provide good incomes and are more stable through periods of recession. There must be a focus on good high school and technical degree granting jobs; you can make a good living in rural Iowa and those industries are thriving.” Detailed information on income trends in both rural and urban Iowa can be found in Peters’ publication “Household Income Trends in Iowa and the U.S, 2005-2015: Rural versus Urban Differences” (SOC 3077).

Letterwinners returning to play basketball for Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in the 2016-2017 season are: (left to right) Maddie Williams, Jillian Heitland, Jade Hanson, Hannah Lau, Mara Anderson, and Makaya Shropshire.

Cardinal girls seek improvement

GHV girls’ basketball coach Matt Erpelding will rely on youth as he navigates the Cardinal squad through the schedule this season. With only three seniors and two juniors on the roster, a number of sophomores will be expected to step into key roles in Erpelding’s lineup. Many of those sophomores logged considerable minutes as freshmen last season as GHV struggled on the way to a 5 – 17 overall record. Coach Erpelding is confident that the experience gained by those youthful players combined with strong leadership from the few upperclassmen will produce a stronger GHV team. The Cards will look to three returning upperclassmen to lend their experience to the squad. Most notable on the list is senior forward Hannah Lau. Lau was an honorable mention all-conference player last season after leading the team in scoring, rebounding and steals. “Hannah Lau has worked very hard on her game in the off season and I expect her to have a great senior year,” noted Erpelding. “Her versatility should open things up for other players to have a lot of success.” Makaya Shropshire also returns for her senior season as a letter winner. After seeing action off of the bench last year, Makaya is expected to become a more significant contributor this year. “Makaya will be asked to play a much larger role on this year’s team. Her quickness will be a huge asset as she can cause opposing teams some headaches with her scrappy defense and that quickness allows us to push the ball up the floor offensively,” stated Erpelding. Junior Jillian Heitland returns after earning a starting role for the Cards last season. Heitland was a consistent performer for GHV last season and coach Erpelding expects to see that reliability continue. “Jillian continues to improve her offensive game which makes her more than just a perimeter shooter. Jillian will need to use her varsity experience to help solidify our defense.” Three sophomores return to the floor as letter winners after breaking into the lineup as freshmen. Maddie Williams, Mara Anderson and Jade Hanson are all expected to show significant growth from a year ago. All three girls showed consistent scoring

potential last season and were also scrappy on the defensive end of the floor. Coach Erpelding has an optimistic outlook as the season begins. “Hannah’s versatility will hopefully be a huge plus and make us a tough team to guard if we play team basketball. That is one area where this team has made tremendous strides in since last season. We are sharing the basketball very well and giving up a good shot for a much better shot. Our team speed is probably our biggest strength. The challenge is if we can use that quickness to our advantage. We have to push the ball up the floor in transition and attack defenses before they get set up. We also need to use that quickness to create turnovers on the defensive end.” Erpelding stated that the Cards will need to show considerable improvement on the defensive end of the floor if they hope to be more successful. “The biggest area of concern for me right now is our defense. We are not playing good defense either as a team or as individuals. We have to make a commitment to the defensive end if we are going to win games of any significance. We are very offensive minded and the challenge I have presented to the girls is to take as much pride in the defensive end of the floor as they have in the offensive end.” Cardinal fans got a taste of what’s in store for their squad as GHV traveled to Mason City last week to face the Mohawks in their annual Hall of Pride scrimmage. As always, Mason City fielded a very strong team that edged ahead in the first half before taking control in the final two quarters. Eight different players saw significant action in a contest intended to allow everyone to play. All 14 players listed in the scorebook were given an opportunity to contribute throughout the game. “I was happy with the way we competed for most of the game,” stated Erpelding. “I was honestly concerned heading into the game if that would be the case. Our nerves showed early in the game but I thought we settled down mid way through the first quarter. The game was within reach throughout the first half as we finished the half playing pretty well and cutting the deficit to 12. Mason City adjusted how they were defending

some of our man-to-man action and we didn’t respond to that very well as we made numerous poor decisions with the basketball. We struggled all night guarding their perimeter shooters and did a very poor job guarding the ball in our man-to-man defense. I did think we rebounded the ball well as we out rebounded them 40-37. We use this scrimmage to find out the things that we need to work on. Without a doubt the area of our game that needs immediate attention is our defense. It is apparent that this group doesn’t take any pride on the defensive end of the court. This was addressed in practice Wednesday so we will see how the girls respond!” With the conference season just around the corner, Erpelding believes North Union will be the team to beat in the TIC West. “They will be a tough team. They have a couple of solid guards and they are always so fundamentally sound and wellcoached.” Erpelding also noted that Forest City and Lake Mills have the potential to be in the hunt for the league title. GHV will open the season with a pair of non-conference games, hosting Osage on November 22 and Charles City on November 28. The Cards will then begin league play on November 29 at North Iowa.

Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, a non-profit group that is working with local food producers and community partners to promote and increase opportunities for local food, now has a membership program to help keep all partners connected and plugged in to the many opportunities that are emerging across North Iowa. There are four levels of membership: student (up to college senior), individual, household, and organizations. Member benefits include discounts to events such as Farm to Fork dinners, free subscription to the quarterly newsletter, The North Iowa Bite, and opportunities to be involved with some of the most innovative, cutting edge local food initiatives in North Iowa. Healthy Harvest of North Iowa is working hard to put local food at the

This non-profit brings life and work together, interacting across multiple levels, including producers, community groups and agencies, corporations and local business. Healthy Harvest is active in nine counties including Cerro Gordo, Hancock, Floyd, Franklin, Kossuth, Mitchell, Winnebago, Worth and Wright. The North Iowa Local Food Guide, a hard copy brochure, as well as a searchable database at www. healthyharvestni.com, is home to more than 50 local food and farm businesses and 17 farmers markets. Farm to Fork dinners showcase great food and flavors and help start the conversation at the community level. “Healthy Harvest is increasing awareness about local food and leading innovative projects with part-

We are very excited about this and are dedicated to helping our members find the right fit for their desired involvement. It’s quick and easy to sign up right on our website at www. healthyharvestni.com.” Along with this new membership, Healthy Harvest is promoting it’s “2016 Center of the Plate” fundraising campaign to generate additional support for local food work. In 2017, Healthy Harvest will publish its annual local food guide, lead a project looking at local meat production and marketing, expand its producer profile project, update its website and more. There’s energy in the local

food movement. Both membership and sponsorship offer opportunities to get involved. Healthy Harvest of North Iowa is led by a seven member, all volunteer board with programs directed by three part-time staff. Funding support comes from several County Board of Supervisors, corporate sponsors including CL Tel and POET Biorefining of Hanlontown, Mercy of North Iowa, Hearing Associates, First Bank of Hampton and grants. Wait for soil temps to remain below 50 degrees to apply anhydrous ammonia By John Sawyer and Dustin Vande Hoef, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach DES MOINES, Iowa – Farmers are reminded to wait until soil temperatures remain below 50 degrees Fahrenheit before applying anhydrous ammonia (NH3) fertilizer this fall. Soil temperatures have been slow to cool due to the unusually warm late October temperatures, and officials with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach said that waiting can help reduce nitrogen loss and better protects the environment. “It is important that farmers wait for cooler soil temps to apply anhydrous so that there is a better chance the fertilizer stays put and will be available to the crop next spring,” said Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of

Agriculture. “Soil temperatures, like air temperatures, can change quickly, so it is important that we wait with applications until soils are likely to remain below 50 degrees.” ISU Extension and Outreach maintains a statewide real-time soil temperature data map on its website that agriculture retailers and farmers use to determine when fall N applications are appropriate. The website can be found at extension.agron.iastate.edu/ NPKnowledge. “The reason for waiting to apply anhydrous ammonia until soils are cold is that nitrification, the process of biological conversion of ammonium to nitrate, occurs at a more rapid rate with warm soils. Since ammonium-N does not leach and is not subject to denitrification, as is nitrate, it is more stable in the soil,” said John Sawyer, professor and extension specialist in

soil fertility and nutrient management at Iowa State University. In addition to waiting for soils to cool below 50 degrees, use of a nitrification inhibitor should be considered to help further slow conversion to nitrate. Temperature is only one soil condition that farmers should consider when applying anhydrous ammonia. Making sure that the soil is not too dry, too hard or too wet will reduce injection issues that allow ammonia to move to the soil surface and be lost to the air. If conditions are not suitable, then waiting for better conditions is suggested. Farmers with questions about timing of fertilizer applications can talk to their local ISU Extension and Outreach field specialist or their ag retailer for more information.

Hancock County 4-H hosted more than 100 people at their annual 4-H Awards & Recognition Program on Sunday, Nov. 13th, 2016. Festivities included inducting the 4-Hers into the County Council leadership groups for high school and junior high, recognizing project area achievements of more than 35 4-H members, and awarding competitive awards to 4-Hers for character, hard work, and commitment. The awards program also recognizes outstanding 4-H volunteers. “This year we recognized Kris and Joan Hanson for outstanding volunteerism for the 4-H program,” said Victoria Schmidt, County Youth Coordinator. “We also recognized and thank the following retiring volunteers: Emily and Aaron Forsyth, Jamie Stromer, Dave Sloan, Mona Kraft-Harle, Jon Gamerdinger, Frank Marshall, Al Steffensmeier, Heidi Konz, Phil and Michelle Dornbier, Jamie Stromer, George Smith, Dan Goll, Ian Barrick, Patricia Barrick, Cassie Collins, Jillian Van Epps, and Jeanne Dick. These volunteers are the caring adults that make the 4-H program thrive in Hancock County.” Immediately following the ceremony 4-Hers, family members and friends enjoyed a meal together sponsored in part by Hancock/Winnebago Cattlemen Association. “Winning awards is only a small part of 4-H,” Schmidt said. “We can’t forget that 4-H members make new friends, learn new skills and master their projects areas, and develop into caring adults who make a positive difference in our future.” If you would like to learn more about 4-H in Hancock County contact the Hancock County Extension Office at 641-923-2856 or xhancock@iastate.edu. fruit, year after year, but to keep them coming back, some pre-winter care and preparation is required. What must be done during fall to ready strawberry beds for a cold-weather blast? ISU Extension and Outreach horticulturists can help answer your questions about strawberry plant beds and how to handle them during the winter. To have additional questions answered, contact the ISU Hortline at 515-294-3108 or hortline@iastate.edu. How should I prepare my strawberry bed for winter? Strawberries should be mulched in fall to prevent winter injury. Low temperatures and repeated freezing and thawing of the soil through the winter months are the main threats to strawberry plants. Temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit may kill flower buds and damage the roots and crowns of unmulched plants. Repeated freezing and thawing of the soil can heave plants out of the ground, severely damaging or destroying the plants. Allow the strawberry plants to harden or acclimate to cool fall temperatures before mulching the planting. Applying mulch before

the strawberry plants have properly hardened may make the plants more susceptible to winter injury. In northern Iowa, strawberries are normally mulched in early November. How do I protect strawberry plants growing in a container? Strawberry plants growing in a container will likely be seriously damaged or destroyed if left outdoors on a patio, deck or on the ground surface. One option is to place the container in a cool, protected location (such as an attached, unheated garage) in late November. Periodically check the plants in winter and water the container when the soil becomes dry. Another option is to dig a hole in a protected area and set the container in the ground. Cover the strawberry plants with several inches of straw. The soil and straw mulch will protect the strawberry plants from cold winter temperatures.
