When the Principal is the New Guy at School . . .

Greetings from the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Junior /Senior High, I will begin by saying how much I have enjoyed the start-up of school in Iowa; in meeting and getting to know EBF’s amazing students and families, and collaborating with a very knowledgeable, dedicated staff whose childcentered teaching sets forth a high standard for educators. With that being said, as the new guy in school, I am surveying the landscape and we are working hard to best determine which practices help students achieve. One word comes to mind as we begin shoring up practices to insure progressive achievement. That word is safety. As principal, I look at three types of safety – physical safety, emotional safety and academic safety. The most fundamental issue for principals to begin with is physical safety. Schools need to get students in the door safely. They have to create safe spaces in schools, provide supervision, and communicate clearly to students about staying in bounds and abiding by rules while at school. Tight, carefully coordinated and practiced systems need to be in place for a school to operate smoothly. Ongoing communication about safety procedures and policies lets families know that the school deeply values the well-being of its students. The second facet involves emotional safety. Students need to be in a nurturing, child-centered environment focused on building relationships and communication between children, their families and teachers. Every staff member in a school must make sure they have established a connection with

children and are promoting a positive learning culture so that students are engaged, connected to their studies and have someone to reach out to during a time of need. Junior/Senior High School staff are working diligently to establish and promote a strong learning culture which creates and preserves connections between families, kids and teachers. The third component of safety is academic safety. Academic safety begins with the development of a professional learning community. Learning communities don't just magically appear. The foundations must be built with concise blueprints for educators to develop high expectations and achievement for every student through a well-articulated, seamless curriculum. Instructional leaders and teachers are collaboratively working to build needed curricular support beams to facilitate high quality learning for all students. As the safety trifecta is addressed and perfected, families will begin to notice a distinct rhythm and routine emerging. Student achievement will be reflective. Please take a moment to share with your child that their school is very invested in them. We are there to help, support and guide them in their learning as they prepare to enter into their adult lives. I thank you for the opportunity to meet and get to know your children and our communities. Steve Noble, Principal EBF JR/Sr High

Teamwork through Hands-on Instruction By Chapter Reporters R. Richmond, M. Wells, and A. Eveland

New opportunities rise from change. EBF High School had a change of leadership with the hiring of new Principal Steve Noble. Noble, recently hired this summer from Michigan, is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hunt white-tailed deer with his family. Mr. Noble spoke with Ag Ed Instructor Patrick Powers about allowing students to gain experience reading instructions and working as a team to complete the task of assembling tree stands. Powers indicated that the timing was perfect, as the class recently completed a unit and was in transition to the next item in line for the curriculum. Noble said that high school kids need to learn to read, follow instructions, and work collaboratively in the “real world” after they graduate. “Letting kids use their skills that they are capable of with reading, problem solving, and working together, students will have an opportunity to be better citizens outside the school setting by doing a project like this,” Noble explained. The deer stands had several different pieces to put together to complete the stand. Students had to decipher information from the instructions and had to problem solve together to place the correct pieces together. FFA student Gabe Larkin was impressed with the quality of the material and how easily the pieces fell into place. “I was glad we could work in a group. Our group had a system in which one person was able to give guidance and direction to how pieces went together. Sometimes we all had to take a peek at the diagrams, but between the three of us, we were able to complete the task,” Larkin stated. Other classmates had similar thoughts on the assignment. “I was impressed with the Caption-Ryan Adams, structure of this stand. The powder-coat covering on the structure will allow it to last outside Austin Stewart, and Gabe in the elements a long time,” Brandt Hughes concluded. Completion of the stands will take Larkin work methodically less than a week – just in time for Mr. Noble’s white-tailed deer adventure in Southern Iowa. on an Ag Lab project.

Agri-Power FFA Chapter Holds a Turkey Dinner Written By: Randie Richmond, Morgan Wells and Adlynn Eveland

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the Agri-Power FFA Chapter showed that they are very thankful for community. This fall season marked another year of the annual turkey dinner held by the chapter members. Agri- Power was able to serve turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and a roll. Many people were kind enough to donate, as there was a jar for free will donation. Along with a great meal came a great dessert; every member who worked the turkey dinner brought a homemade dessert to serve. The Agri-Power Turkey Dinner is a time for the community to come out and have an early Thanksgiving dinner. Chapter member Jessie Fisher mentioned, “It feels like every year we get a bigger and bigger outcome, and it’s nice that our community comes out and supports us.” Left to right Rylie Lathen, Morgan Wells, Jessie Fisher and Randie Richmond

Persistent nasal congestion, reddened eyes, sore throat, cough, or headaches that disrupt the student’s learning or pose a risk of disease transmission to others. 4. Unexplained skin eruptions or rashes. When in doubt, consult your child’s doctor before sending your child to school. 5. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) appearing as redness of the conjunctiva (lining of eye/ eyelid) with or without pus drainage from eye and/ or swelling. Student should not return to school until they have been examined and treated. 6. To complete State of Iowa required dental screenings, the local I-Smile Coordinator will be at our High School during the months of November and December. The Iowa legislature passed a law in 2008 requiring all students enrolled in 9th grade have a dental screening. The Registered Dental Hygienist will provide screenings for all students without a dental certificate on file. The dental screening is an examination of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth and will be completed with a flashlight, disposable mouth mirror, and gloves. An informational letter will be sent home with your student following the screening.

H Hunters who need to satisfy the hunter education requirement need to act quickly – a few seats for the classroom courses are still available in November, but students will need to travel to participate. Classes can be found online at www.iowadnr.gov/huntered. Prospective students can see which courses or field days are near them; how many seats are available for the class or if the class is full and a waiting list is available. There is also a map showing the location along with the instructor’s name, a course overview and any special instructions. Iowa law requires all hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972 to satisfactorily complete a hunter education course in order to purchase a license. Children as young as 11 may enroll in the course, but their certificate of completion will not become valid until their 12th birthday. Each year, around 12,000 students complete hunter education in Iowa.

If you do not want your student to receive a free dental screening from the I-Smile program, please contact the school nurse. If you have a dentist and your student has received an exam within the last year, please call your dentist and have them fax the State of Iowa approved Dental Screening certificate to the High School, if you have not already done so. Dental offices have access to this form. If you have questions please contact Denise Janssen, RDH I-Smile Coordinator at 641-682-3224.

Congratulations to Haegen Boyer!

This senior is making plans for after graduation, by signing her letter of intent to play softball at McKendree.

Marching Band Extravaganza!!!

On October 24th, the EBF Bands performed their season’s songs for the last times. The gym was filled with sound as EBF’s Junior High Band came marching in. A few minutes later, the gym exploded with music and color as the high school band performed their 2016 show for family and friends. The junior high is conducted by Mrs. Dezerae Fairchild, and the high school by Mr. Joe Overton. The color guard director is Mrs. Paige VerSteegh.

Mr. Overton takes a selfie with seniors Teri Jo Lane, Peyton Walker, Claire Jager and Jessie Eveland, who received the Marvin K. Ferdig award.. Jr High students bring their parade winning show Field Commanders: Grace Manternach and Claire Jager.

Jr. High at attention.

A final performance of the award-winning show that they had been perfecting since July.

If your child is involved in other events outside of school, and you would like to have their accomplishments published, please email a statement and a photo as an attachment to rocketnewskathystreet@rocketsk12.org The Rocket would be a great place to show off their efforts and talents.

The next two submission deadlines for The Rocket are November 23 and December 8.
