O-A/BC-IG girls return seven le er winners At the start of the 2015-16 basketball season the goal of O-A/BC-IG girls’ basketball coach Megan Chizek was to see her young squad develop as the season moved along. Last year’s team, which inished 5-16, only had three seniors, which allowed several underclassmen to gain playing experience. As a result the team returns seven letter winners this year. The returning letter winners are seniors Sydney Buehler (G), Amanda Gunderson (G), Courtney Peters (P) and Skylar Reis (G) and juniors Jordyn Fredericks (G), Bethany Rehse (PG) and Anna VanDusen (P). Reis, Rehse and VanDusen are returning starters. Rehse earned second team all-conference honors last season.
Chizek is also looking for varsity squad contributions from junior Jatelyn Jessen, sophomores Ellie Dotzler and Alyssa Mason and freshman Kylee Weber. With the return of several experienced players the coach has set a goal for club to be a “top contender in the conference.” Chizek pointed to Kingsley-Pierson, Woodbury Central and Westwood as the top teams in the conference. “The strengths of our team are experience, size and pushing the ball up the court. The areas we need to work on are rebounding and breaking a press,” noted Chizek. The rest of the roster includes: Sophomores—Kelsey Dausel, Kirsten Dausel, Emma Endrulat, Ashley Lindner and Madison Schiernbeck.

Falcons look for season long improvement A young and inexperienced boys’ basketball team will take to the court for O-A/BC-IG this season. Coach Steve Brown said the focus this season is improve with each passing day. “Several of our kids are without the experience they should have at this point in their careers,” said Brown. “Even some of my older kids, with the exception of Ryan Bumann and Devon Fritz (the team’s two letter winners), don’t have the experience they should have at this point due to injuries or from not being out or lack of playing time.” Fritz, a guard, earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season when he led the Falcons in scoring with 12.9 points per game and was second in total assists (58) and second in steals (39). Brown said Bumann will play forward and may play a guard spot occasionally. Junior Ty Warnke is slated for the point guard spot. The other varsity squad members include: Seniors—Brandon Schwade, Parker Clausen and Cole Veltri (out for season due to injury). Juniors—Chase Devitt and Ryan Kolpin. Sophomores—Ethan Ernst, Landon Ray, Reed Godbersen, Grant Conover,
Quintin Cranston and Kaden Ladwig. Brown noted the six varsity sophomores will be called upon for playing time. “Those six kids will have to step up and develop faster than we would normally require,” said Brown. “They’ll get thrown into varsity games with just one year of JV experience. That is going to be tough on them because they really need another year of JV work, but we don’t have that luxury.” The junior varsity roster includes: Junior—Austin Newquist and David Hoss. Sophomores—Peyton Young, Austin Lindner, Jacob Cowlham and Ethan Young. Freshmen—Isaiah Ironshell, Austin Wardrip, Sam Devitt, Tyler Ehrig, Carson Godbersen, Tevin Harms and William Grote. Dan Dotzler is the team’s assistant coach. Brown said in order for the team to be successful this season the players will have to understand what they are capable of doing. “We’re going to have to drive the ball and get out in transition and if there is an opportunity we need to go to the rim and score or get fouled,” said Brown. “If we can’t get to the basket we’ll need to
be possessive of the ball and go with the idea that if the other team doesn’t have the ball they can’t score. We need to cut down our turnovers and understand how important possession of the ball is. “The problem with inexperienced kids is they want to play faster than what they are capable of. Turnovers then become a problem and that is where games get away from you. “We just want to get better everyday. If we have a game with a lot of mistakes, we’ll work to clean those mistakes up and continue to work at getting better.” Brown said the process of getting better will take some time. “In the irst three days of practice we threw a lot at the kids,” noted Brown. “They were starting to get stressed so we went back to keeping things basic and working on fundamentals. We spent one practice just scrimmaging and found a lot of things that need some polish.” Brown said Siouxland Christian is among the top teams in the WVC. “Siouxland Christian had some success last season and probably has the most kids back so they are probably the team to beat in the conference,” said Brown. “Lawton-Bronson, Woodbury Central, Kingsley-Pierson and Maple
Valley-Anthon-Oto should also be pretty good. “Ridge and West Monona are probably a lot like us in that they lost a lot of players from last season. For a lot of conference schools, how good they will be will depend on how fast their kids develop.” The boys opened the regular season Tuesday, Nov. 29 against River Valley. O-A/BC-IG Wrestling Letter Winners
Falcon wrestlers aim for con nued improvement O-A/BC-IG wrestling coach Randy Nieman is looking for continued growth this season from several wrestlers who have varsity experience. The coach noted one of the goals he has for his wrestlers this season is to “make that next step.” “We return four district qualifiers and one state place winner,” said Nieman. “We want each of those wrestlers to make an improvement to take themselves to the next level. “We also return multiple wrestlers who have two or more years of varsity experience. They have consistently improved each year and we want that growth to continue. Sometime it takes a little patience, but in the end our wrestlers’ hard work always pays off.” The Falcons return nine letter winners to the line-up including state meet qualifier Kurtis Krager who placed sixth at 106 at the state meet as a sophomore last season. Krager also qualified for the 2015 state meet, but did not place. Krager is projected to wrestle at 113 this year. The other returning letter winners include seniors Jeren McKibbin (285) and Adam Grote (170); juniors Tyler Anderson (195/220), Isaac Endrulat (195) and Blake Anderson (182) and sophomores Dylan Hemer (113/120), Ethan Mortensen (138) and Devin Behrendsen (160). Non-letter winners who Nieman is counting on to contribute to the varsity are freshmen Jake Nieman and Jarrett Hewitt and junior Ryder Meek. The rest of the roster includes sophomore Shawn Hopkins and freshmen Derrick McKenzie and Gavin Parks. Jory Hemer is the assistant coach. “Our stronger weight classes will 106, 113, 170, 182, 195 and 285. Those are the five weight classes that our district qualifiers from last year
will wrestle at and 106 where a solid freshman should be,” said Nieman. “We will be a solid dual and tournament team. It will be tough to improve on our 10-2 dual record from last year, but we are currently ahead of last year’s learning curve. I’m very pleased with where the wrestlers’ technique is right now. “We have multiple wrestlers who never stopped wrestling last year, competing all spring and throughout the summer. You have to believe that this commitment to success will pay off. There is no substitute for freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling in the summer.” O-A/BC-IG had a 10-2 dual record last season including a 6-1 mark in the Western Valley Conference. Year after year the Western Valley Conference features some top wrestling talent. Nieman said the top teams in conference this season include Westwood, MV-A-O and Woodbury Central. The Falcons opened the season Tuesday, Nov. 29 with a double dual against East Sac County and South Central Calhoun. O-A/BC-IG travels to Holstein this Thursday, Dec. 1 to take on Ridge View and MV-A-O in conference action. West Monona will host the conference tournament Jan. 14. O-A/BC-IG Boys’ and Girls’ Bowling Letter Winners
Winter Sports Edition
O-A/BC-IG bowlers gearing up for new season The O-A/BC-IG bowling teams open their seasons this Thursday, Dec. 1 in Denison against Denison-Schleswig. Girls The O-A/BC-IG girls’ team posted a 2-8 record and placed third at the class 1A state-qualifying meet last season. New head coach Adam Mickelson said one of his goals for the girls this season is to improve on last year’s record. “This year, our goals are to improve individually so that we can achieve competitive scores,” said Mickelson. “Last year, the team was 2-8 and went up against some good competition, but we have a number of experienced bowlers back and I am expecting some improvement on that record this season. Hopefully, we will be bowling our best by the season’s end so we can compete in postseason play.” The team returns three letter winners in juniors Jenna Henderson, Amy Bennett and Alexis Renze. “Our letter winners are our top bowlers back from last season, but there are some others who have varsity experience. They are senior Marzia FineranShivers and sophomores Victoria Hoe-
fling and Kim Renze. “The other girls who should contribute on the varsity level are sophomores Alyssa Henderson and Sarah Cotton as well as freshman Aurora Anderson.” Mickelson said when it comes to the district, Le Mars will be good again this year, but hopefully his girls can rise to the challenge each meet. The complete roster includes: Seniors— Marzia Fineran-Shivers. Juniors—Elizabeth Adams, Amy Bennett, Melissa Cedeno, Jenna Henderson, Amy Huls and Alexis Renze. Sophomores—Rebecca Cedeno, Sarah Cotton, Alyssa Henderson, Olivia Hoefling, Victoria Hoefling, Brooke Little, Billie Mosier, Kim Renze, Sierra Schmidt and Hannah Ulrich. Freshmen—Aurora Anderson, Krystal Bettin, Skylar Mackey, Stephanie Rigby, Shae Baker and Zoe Verschoor. Boys The Falcon boys return five starters from last year’s team that placed third at the state qualifying meet. Despite having a large starting group, coach Kurt Hofmeister noted the team will be young again this season. Only

one of the returning starters is a senior. “I am hopeful that we can win at least half of our matches this year,” said Hofmeister. “Once again, we will be a very young team, so I am hoping that we will show a lot of improvement from early in the season until late in the season.” The returning starters/letter winners are senior Gabe Malcom, junior Cole Rhea and sophomores Dana Wessel, Colin Bengford and Devin Hare. “Wessel and Rhea are my top two returning bowlers from last year,” said Hofmeister. “Rhea was honorable mention all district last year. They both averaged about a 173 during meets last year. “The other kids who should contribute on the varsity level are freshman Darian Hannel, sophomores Kolton Krajicek and Jarrett Bumann and junior Austin Behrendsen, who should all be pushing for varsity spots.” The rest of the roster includes: Junior—Ryan Dunker. Sophomores—Tyler Euchner, Zane Sohm, Colin Bengford, Brayden Miller and Dillon Sanderson.

Ridge View Girls’ Basketball
Wednesday, November 30, 2016 11
Raptor girls to feature strong, quick line-up Ridge View returns six letter winners from last year’s team that posted a 10-10 record. Second year coach Brian Bode is counting on that experience along with a quicker and stronger line-up as factors toward improving on last season’s record. The returning letter winners are senior Harlee Wagoner, juniors Beth Pickhinke, Erin Johnson and Paige Todd and sophomores Kinzey Dutler and Kara Richard. Wagoner and Pickhinke, who are returning starters, were all conference honorable mention selections last season. Wagoner led the Western Valley Conference in rebounds with 11.3 rebounds per game. She scored 6.3 points per game. Pickhinke averaged eight points, 2.1 rebounds and two steals per game. The other letter winners are the top prospects to ill out the starting line-up. Bode also listed several girls who will probably come off the varsity bench. They include sophomores Gracie Chance, Emerson Else, Maddie Else and Kennedy Mason and freshman Katlyn Wiese. The coach said the bench will be a team strength this season. “We should have great depth this year,” said Bode. “I also feel that we are very athletic and have great team speed. We have a knowledgeable group of girls who have good basketball IQ. I also think we have the best rebounder in the conference, which gives
us more opportunities for second chance points. “We have some experience in our two returning starters as well as a few of our bench players who played a lot of minutes last year, which will be nice, but we will also be young to begin the year. Many of our bench players will be playing varsity for the irst time. Just making the adjustment to a little faster game and having to play stronger will take some time. We won’t have tremendous team height, which may be a concern if we are facing a team with multiple players who are taller.” Bode noted this year’s squad will be better than last year’s team in several areas. “This year’s team will be more of a threat from the perimeter,” said Bode. “I also think this team is more aggressive and will like to mix things up on defense and be able to play faster offensively. “Our girls have been working hard in the weight room so I also feel we will be faster and stronger than a year ago. I also feel that being in the system another year the girls will know our concepts better and we will be more ef icient.” The coach said the overall success of the team will be determined by several factors including playing team basketball, limiting turnovers, forcing turnovers, converting turnovers into points, be aggressive and convert free throws.
“Offensively, I think we will be quick and aggressive,” said Bode. “We should have more shooters to provide some threat outside the three-point line, which hopefully allows us to create advantages in the post area. “Defensively, we have increased our demands for ball pressure and want to cause havoc for opposing teams. If we can control the tempo of the game defensively we like our chances.” Bode said the WVC will be very competitive this season. “Westwood should be the front runner with the most returning players,” said Bode. “Woodbury Central, Kingsley-Pierson and Lawton Bronson always seem to be tough each year. I believe this is where we will it in with this year team. These games could be important games throughout our season as these games could end up going either way. “O-A/BC-IG will be better than last year with more experience and I think Siouxland Christian and West Monona will have a strong group of returning players as well. River Valley also has a couple returning players.” The rest of the Ridge View roster includes: Sophomores—Rachel Kenny, Mercedes Juelfs (manager) and Ashley Kestel (manager). Freshmen—Veronica Kron, Hanna Blackmore, Kylie Humlicek, Kate Kofmehl, Jordan

Ridge View Boys’ Basketball
Winter Sports Edition
Raptor boys have talent, need to gain experience Ridge View returns just one starter from last year’s 18-3 boys’ basketball team. Coach Dale Tokheim noted this year’s team has talent, but lacks experience. The lone returning starter is senior Tyler Wingert, a 6’1” guard, who was honorable mention all-conference last season. Tokheim described Wingert as a “strong and athletic player” who can inish at the rim and shoots well from outside. Other returning letter winners are senior Colton Wunschel a 6’4” post/forward and junior Jaxon Franken a 5’11” guard. “Wunschel is a versatile player who will play both inside and outside for us,” said Tokheim. “Franken is a great outside shooter.” Senior Cole Degen a 6’2” forward/post also won a letter last season, but will miss his senior basketball season due to a knee injury suffered during the football season. Tokheim was counting on Degen as one of the team’s starters in the post. In addition to the letter winners, Tokheim is counting on several newcomers to the varsity roster. “Seniors Juan Nava is a guard that will be battling with the underclassmen for some playing time,” noted Tokheim. “Junior Josh Frahm (6’5”) will be competing for some playing time as a post player. Twins Klint and Kolton Blum are both versatile players who could possibly play any position for us this year. “We have a deep sophomore class and they will be ighting for some starting
spots. Jacob Tokheim (6’3”) heads the sophomore group. He is a guard who could play some post for us as well. Jake Kliegl (6’1”) is a strong, athletic and aggressive post player. Ezra Miller could be a force inside at 6’6” 270 pounds. Austin Degen, Logan Cuthrell and Kevin McGuire are all guys who can handle the ball and shoot it well from the outside.” Junior Jaeden Albers is also listed on the varsity roster. The team’s assistant coach is Mike Smith. The head coach noted his team’s style of play will be very similar to last year. The question is can an inexperienced team execute and handle the pressure. “We have a lot of good athletes with speed,” noted Tokheim. “I think we will be able to push the ball up the loor and have several guys who can drive and inish. We are very versatile because the guys have similar abilities so we can move people around to take advantage of mismatches. “I think depth is a strength because we have 12 to 15 guys that are ready to compete at the varsity level. I also think our physical strength is a team strength because we will have several people who can post up. “Experience is probably our biggest weakness. I think all the guys I mentioned are ready to play, but only three of them have experience at the varsity level. If we work hard and improve throughout the year and have some fun along the way, our record won’t determine our success.
However, even with the big losses we have from last year’s team we have high expectations. We expect to challenge the conference leaders. “Finally, if we can improve all year and be playing our best basketball at the beginning of the tournament trail we will be satis ied.” Tokheim explained his coaching philosophy. “I want to play tough smart defense. We will play man to man and a couple of zones. I like to mix things up based on the situation and the other team’s personnel. “Offensively, we will push the tempo. We have several guys who can drive and inish and that also sets up the three-point shot. I don’t want anyone to be afraid to take the shot but we will work on recognizing what a good shot is.” Tokheim is expecting a competitive battle in the conference. “I think the top three teams are Woodbury Central, MVAO and Siouxland Christian. The next four teams could challenge those top three on any given night and they include us, Westwood, K-P and L-B. There will be a lot of teams who are going to be improved from last year with a lot of young talent in the conference.” Ridge View’s junior varsity roster includes: Junior—Michael Zobel. Sophomores—Brant Price, Karlo Weldon, Andrew Brockman and Matt Brosamle. Freshmen—Jaden Droegmiller, Jacob Constancio, Logan Gross, Nathan Yockey,
Alex Movall, Grant Schmidt, Jarod Vohs and Dawson Blum. The team manager is Randy Redding. Ridge View introduces archery to sports program Ridge View High School is offering archery to its high school students this winter. The irst year program has attracted 33 students under the guidance of Justin Kinney. The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is a joint venture between Departments of Natural Resources and Departments of Education. There are nearly 200 Iowa schools participating in the in-school program and growing rapidly. Eastern Iowa is illed with teams and western Iowa is gaining. Currently, schools near Ridge View that have archery teams include Lawton-Bronson, Spencer, Sergeant BluffLuton and Atlantic. Kinney said he is hopeful more schools will create teams as the popularity of archery grows. The Raptor archery season begins Dec. 2 and culminates with the state tournament in Des Moines March 3-4 for those who qualify. From April-October Ridge View archers have the opportunity to shoot once a week at school, participate
in a summer series and attend various tournaments and shoots as they open. “My goal this summer is to open it to our fourth through eighth grade students to get them interested and involved,” noted Kinney. “The great thing about archery is that it is literally for everyone regardless of strength, gender, physical ability, etc. so it is a great opportunity to get students in our school involved.” The team includes Katrina Van Norman, Markus Mueller, Austin Hansen, Grant Schmidt, Nelson Bernandes, Cole Degen, Katie Brinkman, Rayann Volkert, Tristin Drey, Lauren Johnson, Matt Brosamle, Nathan Yockey, Connor Pickhinke, Arianna Parra, Cassie Allen, Evan Cockerham, Brant Price, Chase Evans, Brett
Taylor, Angela Conover, Braleigh Schossow, Cloe Droegmiller, Jaden Droegmiller, Brayden Stowater, Samantha Pickel, Andrew Brockman, Devin Hare, Amanda Bruns, Jo Loera, Aimee Kell, Taylor Beiermann, Kyle Friedrichsen and Jake Kliegl. Kinney listed several goals for this season: • Get students in the school involved. There are currently 33 students out for the sport. Kinney would like to see that number grow. • Learn. “This is a brand new sport at Ridge View. I have a lot to learn about coaching it, being a member of the league, etc. Looking forward to learning alongside our great students,” said Kinney. • Help students grow as people. Ar-
chery teaches great life skills such as commitment, patience, honesty and diligence. • Encourage students to constantly better themselves as archers. In this sport students compete against themselves just as much as other archers. • Get the word out about archery in this area and conference and hopefully see more teams in the area form in the future. In terms of scheduling, Kinney said the team will start small to “get our feet wet” this season. The schedule includes a triangular between Sergeant Bluff-Luton, LawtonBronson and Ridge View on a date to be determined; Ridge View Raptor Shootout Dec. 3 at 8 a.m. at the high school gym; Broken Arrow Tournament in Ventura Jan. 14; Atlantic Trojan Tournament in Atlantic Jan. 21 and the LawtonBronson Tournament in Lawton Jan. 28. There will be additional tournaments as they are announced near Ridge View.

Ridge View Wrestling
Raptor wrestlers are young, eager to work hard New Ridge View wrestling coach Caleb Christensen inherits a young, but eager group of wrestlers. “We are a young group this year,” noted Christensen. “With that being said, we also have a very hard working group. Last year’s group has really set the tempo for us to continue our work. We had a great group of leaders in the wrestling room last year and will have some kids this year looking to pick up that leadership role for our team. “We are not as strong this year technique-wise, but our kids make up for that with heart and determination on the mat.” The Raptor squad includes 13 wrestlers. They are (*denotes letter winner) seniors Evan Else* and Erik Major; juniors Trent Moeller*, Trent Miller*, Cameron Steffens*, Lance Else*, Jake Mitchell and Nelson Augusto; sophomore Tyler Smith and freshmen Dylan Wood, Connor Pickhinke, Tate Phillips and Chance Hansen. The team’s assistant coach is Doug Davidson. Evan Else was 26-11 last season with 17 falls. He is a returning two-time district quali ier and returning conference champion at 220. Lance Else was 23-17 last year. Trent Miller comes to Ridge View from Alta-Aurelia. “Evan Else is returning off of a good season last year,” noted Christensen. “He was a conference champion and sectional runner-up. Else will be looking to improve from last year and be trying to qualify for the state tournament in Des Moines in February. “Lance Else is also looking to make that trip to Des Moines with his brother. He was a district quali ier as a freshman and will be looking to add to that this year. Lance is starting to grow into a solid
Galva, IA
technician and that will be his strong suit on the mat this season. “Miller comes to us from Alta-Aurelia. He inished 28-9 last season and inished third at sectionals as a sophomore. Miller will be looking to push that to a qualifying spot in the district tournament this season and will also be trying to vie for a spot at the state tournament.” Christensen is also counting on the underclassmen to ill out the line-up. “We have four incoming freshmen this year that we will look to add in some key areas,” noted Christensen. “Connor Pickhinke will look to help us out at 182 pounds. Tate Phillips will be looking to wrestle for us at 182 pounds as well. Tate is a solid wrestler all around and will be a good presence in the wrestling room. “Chance Hansen is coming off of a good season in middle school and will look to wrestle for us at 170 pounds. Dylan Wood is also coming off of a good season in middle school. Dylan will be looking to give us some solid points at the 138pound weight class.” The coach added the Raptors have a “great group of kids.” “One strong point that we can always count on is the work ethic these kids bring to the room each day,” said Christensen. “It is the backbone of what we are trying to accomplish. Kids bring in a great energy each day and are willing to put in the effort to develop in to the best wrestlers they can possibly be. I am most looking forward to working with kids who will bring something different to the table for us in the wrestling room.” There are some areas the coach is looking to improve on. “We are always looking to develop wrestlers to their fullest potential, both on the mat and in life. We have a young team this year. Technique will be our biggest challenge to overcome
on the mat. I feel that in the past we have had success on our feet and we hope to continue that. One major focus we will have this year is on our ‘ground game’ where we will be looking to improve in chain wrestling on the mat to put pinning combinations together. “Our success this year will be de ined by the improvements we make. We will be looking at small details this year and will be looking to develop good wrestlers and good people. Our successes will not be de ined by wins and losses, but more by our work ethic and our willingness to push forward.” Developing good wrestlers and people is part of Christensen’s coaching philosophy. “Our coaching staff wants to develop our wrestlers to their fullest potential,” said Christensen. “As a student, athlete, citizen or jobholder, we want our athletes to leave the program empowered with the skills to make them successful in all walks of life. We want to develop goal setters who realize success knows no shortcuts. “We believe that hard work is the secret to our success. We want our athletes to experience success while having fun and exhibiting good sportsmanship. That’s why we believe all wrestlers need to follow our pledge. “Do what has to be done, do it when it has to be done, do it as well as you can, do it this way all of the time.” Christensen is a believer in no pause wrestling, which states “we can’t stop and hold on, learn to move your feet and move your opponent and look to score at all times.” He also believes wrestlers need to be ighters. “That means we will ight when winning or losing and it doesn’t matter what the score is.”
Christensen noted the WVC is a very competitive and challenging conference. “Each team has their unique qualities and it will be great competition for us,” said Christensen. “A lot of the schools in our conference are returning some great talent. O-A/BC-IG is always tough and will bring some great kids back to their line-up this year as will Woodbury Central. “West Monona is also returning some solid starters in their upper weights as well as a solid group of freshmen. Westwood is also a very tough team. They have built a great program in Sloan and will be returning some very good talent. They will be the team to beat in our conference this year.” Ridge View Nov. 29 West Sioux/AA (at Holstein) Dec. 1 MVAO/OABCIG (at Holstein) 3 at Manson Tour. 6 Hum/East Sac/So.
