Quest leads to Hardin County in 1873

By Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – It’s a story worthy of Charles Dickens. The twists and turns the characters take – even the character’s names sound of Dickens. But there is no Dickensian ending. Just years of mystery. And the final mystery: Where is Nettie Mulholland buried? That is what Burlington resident Bob Orr came to the Eldora newspaper wondering not long ago. Orr says family ties have enlisted him in a search for Nettie Mulholland’s grave. The Eldora Newspapers became a point of contact because what little is known about Nettie includes one indisputable fact. She was born in Clay Township Hardin County, Iowa, sometime in 1873. And – last heard of in 1900 somewhere in Milwaukee. Mr. Orr knows she once ran away from home at 14 and found herself meeting up with a woman in Minnesota who had something less than a sterling reputation - according to police. Orr says the life of Nettie seemed

from the start destined to be a sad and turbulent one. But she apparently didn’t give up easily, and she was known to have lived in the Twin Cities, and to have a child herself. And whatever became of her, she seemed forever bound to family and layers of stepfamily, all of whom came to tough times, as well. There was no Mr. Dickens to provide redemption. Orr reports “Nettie Mulholland was born ca 1873, Clay Twp., Hardin Co., IA, a daughter of Andrew (18421925) & Betsy (1854-???) (Voiles) Mulholland. Betsy also went by Betty and possibly by Elizabeth. When Nettie was about 1 ½ years of age, Andrew Mulholland deserted his wife and child and changed his name to George Wilson.” “By the time Nettie was 12 years of age, her mother, Betsy had married three times: 1) Andrew Mulholland on 26 Jul. 1871, Clay Twp., Hardin Co., IA (Nettie’s biological father), 2) Richard Jackson on 17 Apr. 1880, Clay Twp., Hardin Co., IA, and 3) Lewis A. Descombes in Mar. 1885, Milwaukee, WI. “On 3 Sep. 1887, Nettie, 14 years old, ran away from her then home in Milwaukee, WI to St. Paul, MN.

“On 1 Oct. 1895, it was discovered Nettie delivered a stillborn, outof-wedlock son, baby boy Wetzel, while living at 538 East Water Street, Milwaukee, WI, fathered by Albert Wetzel, Printer, and on 10 Oct. 1896. “Nettie subsequently married Leo/ Leonard Comollie in Milwaukee, but apparently didn’t stay with him long per Milwaukee directory records. “But some time earlier in Sep. 1887, the Milwaukee Sentinel Newspaper carried a short story about how police there recorded finding and rescuing the girl “from a woman of questionable repute,” the episode reconstructed by Orr with considerable detail. “Nettie Mulholland was described as is a bright-eyed girl with pretty blonde hair, alighted from a Chicago train at the Milwaukee & St. Paul depot yesterday morning. She was 14 years old, handsomely dressed and seemed very self-possessed. She evidently expected some one to meet her and seemed disappointed when no one appeared. “Do you know where Mrs. Gifford lives?” she asked one of the depot policemen. “She is my aunt and she sent me a ticket to come from Milwaukee to Minneapolis. I

thought she would meet me.” “The authorities thought they knew of Mrs. Gifford, and that she was not a proper person to send the lady to. During the day a woman, who gave her name as Mrs. Gifford, put in an appearance and demanded the child, saying that she was the girl’s Mother. Mrs. Gifford threatened cold-blooded vengeance upon those who kept her daughter from her. Nettie denied that Mrs. Gifford was her mother. Nettie is now in charge of a gentleman and his wife, who will care of her until she is sent back to her home. Police reported. “But Nettie apparently failed to disclose the fact that shed been reported missing from Milwaukee, and the supposition is that she made up a story to put the St. Paul authorities on the wrong track.” Orr says, “I have much information on the extended family and will send you (the newspaper) more clues by email. I do not think the clues will be all that helpful but there are more about 100 pages in length. They cover some of the history of the Mulholland, Voiles, Jackson, Weber, (continued on page 4)

Corn board enlists students

Emily Herring of Eldora began as the new naturalist for Marshall County Conservation

Eldora woman takes post with Marshall County Conservation HARDIN COUNTY – Emily Herring of Eldora began as the new naturalist for Marshall County Conservation in October and now the Marshall County Conservation Board invites the public to meet Emily and learn about Freshwater Mussels on Tuesday, December 6 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Grimes Farm 2359 233rd Street. The Marshall County Conservation Board will offer a brief introduction to Herring, her background in natural resources, as well as a program on an amazing animal that many of us over look, the Freshwater Mussel. The Grimes Farm is located at 2359 233rd Street just west of Highland Acres Road between West Lincoln Way and Iowa Avenue. Herring is an Iowa State University grad with a degree in natural resources ecology management and has worked with multiple conservation commissions here in central Iowa, including Story and Hardin as well as Marshall. She

and her family moved to Eldora in 2007. Her new job centers on providing education and public information services to the Marshall County community, targeting natural resources issues. “Personally I became passionate about the outdoors when I was young. Besides being introduced to the outdoors through camping, fishing, and hiking, I spent every minute I could exploring my family’s acreage. Although I did not know it back then, I was a naturalist. I observed my surroundings and told my family and friends what I experienced. I caught Spring Peepers and Chorus Frogs, hunted for fossils, I mist netted birds with Gladys Black, and can still remember the first time I saw a Bald Eagle in the winter of 1991 at Bald Eagle Days at Lake Red Rock. “I attended Iowa State University and received my degree in Animal Ecology with the option of Interpretation (aka Naturalist).”

CAT will assist the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) build relationships with young people pursuing careers in agriculture production and allied industries. The goal is to provide students with a source of information on commodities and thereby establish long term relationships with them when they become influential in their professions. “Iowa corn farmers’ future depends our ability to offer relevant programming, advocacy and services to new professionals entering Iowa’s agricultural sector, “said Iowa Corn Promotion Board Director Larry Buss, a farmer from Logan who chairs the committee overseeing the team. “We are excited to work with these 23 bright students on ways we can cultivate and promote our organization and the corn industry.” The team includes one representative from each state college and university, and five students from Iowa State University. In addition, two additional positions on the team are for students in non-ag disciplines at any accredited Iowa college or university. The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB), works to develop and defend markets, fund research, and provide education about corn and corn products. Descombes and other families. “We are trying to find her despite all the twists and turns. My granddad started searching through his attorney for Nettie shortly after the death of Andrew Mulholland in 1925. I picked up the search and after 82 years am still looking. Granddad concentrated his search in the Minneapolis, St. Paul, MN area. I was able to find them in the Milwaukee, WI area but they may have moved from Milwaukee, WI to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Granddad died at the age of 105 without knowing where Nettie is buried. I have only a few years of research left so am hoping that someone will be able to help me find Nettie’s final resting place. Veterinary Feed Guidelines

The Food and Drug Administration has issued new guidelines that will regulate medically important antibiotic use in animal feed. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, veterinary oversight will be required when using medically important antibiotics for treatment, prevention and control through Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD). Antibiotics classified as nonmedically important are not affected by the VFD. “The VFD ensures that the veterinarian and producer are using antibiotics that are medically important for therapeutic purposes, and that they are necessary and warranted,” said Chris Rademacher, ISU Extension and Outreach swine

veterinarian. “Producers who want to continue to use a VFD drug must have a VFD from a licensed veterinarian that they have a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship with. .” Producers are required to keep their VFDs on file for two years. In addition, veterinarians and feed manufacturers who do not abide by the VFD regulations could face fines or the revocation of their licenses. Complete information on the Veterinary Feed Directive (AS 0011) is available through the ISU Extension Store at https:// store.extension.iastate.edu/Product/ Veterinary-Feed-Directive or at the Hardin County Extension Office.

100+ Women Who Care Support Iowa Falls Alden FFA & Ag Program

HARDIN COUNTY – 100+ Women Who Care Hardin County recently presented a check in the amount of $7,200 to the Iowa Falls Alden FFA & Ag program, to support the expansion of the Learning Land Lab, located at the Iowa Falls/Alden High School. Members voted at their October event to support the Iowa Falls Alden FFA, which was nominated by Kathy Bartlett of Iowa Falls. Members’ $100 donations were then matched by the Barlow

Community Challenge. “ 100+ Women Who Care is so pleased to support the school’s innovative approaches and provide FFA and Ag students more opportunities to tie classroom learning with real-world, hands-on cooperative learning,” says Bartlett. 100+ Women Who Care is a group of Hardin County women who meet three times a year to make an immediate, direct, and positive impact on charities within Hardin

County with their collective donations. Since April 2013, a total of $91,600 has been donated to local nonprofit organizations serving Hardin County: Greater Eldora Youth Sports Program, IFA Back Pack Buddy & Community Connection, Providential Homes, Steamboat Rock Pride and Betterment Organization & Steamboat Rock Visionary Group, Dorothy’s Senior Center, Calkins Nature Area, The Greenbelt Humane

Society, City of New Providence, Ackley Police Association, Civilian Conservation Corps/Prisoner of War Recreational Hall and Museum, City of Iowa Falls (Hardin County Recreational Trails Committee), and Iowa Falls Alden FFA. Throughout the last four years more than 120 women have given to 100+ Women Who Care to support local causes. This unique giving opportunity is available to all women throughout Hardin County.

Tigers sweep Comets in close calls

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORADown-to-the-wire wins were captured by the South Hardin girls’ and boys’ basketball teams over BCLUW during the North Iowa Cedar League West Conference openers here Friday. The Tigers and Comets kept fans in the their seats for the doubleheader’s entire 64 minutes with both games decided in the final minutes. The South Hardin girls beat BCLUW, 54-50 and the Tigers clipped the Comets, 43-37. FREE THROW ADVANTAGE An 11-point edge at the free throw line helped the South Hardin girls tip-off the NICL West campaign on a winning note. The Tigers attempted 19 free throws and made 13, while BCLUW was just 2-of-6 at the charity stripe. “We told the girls there’s not many games where we can walk out there and blow people away. Tuesday’s was kind of nice that we had a nice lead against Clarion. Tonight was one of those we knew was going to be back and forth,” said South Hardin coach Matt Thompson. The lead changed hands eight times to go with five ties. The final lead change came at the close of the third period as South Hardin (2-2 overall) scored the final six points, turning a 39-36 deficit into a 4239 lead. Kiera Anderson’s basket snapped a lengthy scoring drought followed by buckets for Hanna Vander Wilt and Miquela Teske. In the fourth, three-pointers by first Danae Nelson – her third of game, followed by Vander Wilt’s second, built a 52-46 lead with 2:30 showing. The Comets (1-2) pulled within 52-50 on Leah Yantis and Kaylee Goecke hoops, before Nina Priske’s offensive rebound and putback seal the deal. BCLUW coach David Lee credited South Hardin for the win. “I thought this was a game we could win, but they outplayed us. They deserved to win, we didn’t. They got a pretty good ball club, but I think we’ve got a pretty good ball club. They just did things better than we did tonight.” The Comets were handcuffed from the beginning as team leader Samantha Ubben was in foul trouble from the start. She picked up two

fouls in the first quarter, a third early in the second and sat, a fourth in the third and fouled out in the fourth. Nelson led the Tigers’ scoring at 13 points and a shared game-high honors with the Comets’ Skylar Veldhouse as she like Nelson made three triples. South Hardin’s Hannah Tripp had a great start to the game, scoring nine points before suffering an ankle injury in the second quarter and did not return. Vander Wilt and Paige Harrell had eight points each with seven for Teske along with seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Goecke was next best for BCLUW at 11 points and like Ubben fouled out, followed by Ubben eight and six each for Leah Yantis, Madison Ubben and Lauren Anderson, who grabbed 11 rebounds. “Turnovers really hurt us and were careless. We probably had six or seven passes that we could not catch. We shot well from the field, but didn’t take care of the ball,” noted Lee. The Comets connected on 22-of45 field goals and outscored South Hardin from the field, 48-41.

ALL TIGERS IN FOURTH A 16-6 fourth quarter carried the South Hardin boys to the first win of the season after a pair of non-conference losses. The Tigers started the final eightminutes on a 7-2 run to erase a 31-27 deficit after three quarters, and then closed on a 9-1 spurt. Cade Spieker’s three-point play at the 4:44 mark of the fourth gave South Hardin a 3433 lead – the team’s first since early in the second period. BCLUW’s Troy Dolphin answered with a free throw and then grabbed his own miss on the second

free throw and scored a baseline jumper, putting the Comets back up 36-34. The Tigers’ Kevin Rewoldt and Dane Butler then netted back-toback baskets and after a Clay Silver free throw made the score, 38-37, the Tigers’ sank 5-of-8 free throws in the final 32-seconds to secure the victory. “It feels good to get the win,” said South Hardin coach Adam Weig. “I knew going in it would be tough, BCLUW always is. Offensively, we came up with some big baskets in the fourth, and the defense was very good.” The Tigers held a 13-8 advantage through one quarter behind Butler’s eight points and trailed at halftime, 22-20 after Cauy Teske buried a long three point goal at the buzzer. The Comets had a 12-1 run over the first six-minutes of the second to open a 20-14 cushion. “Our experienced showed in the end,” stated BCLUW coach Luke Higgins. “We didn’t execute on offense down the stretch. Defensively, we gave ourselves a chance in the end. We need to learn from this game and move on, look forward to the next game.” Butler, Spieker and Ted Dunn combined for 35 points with a gamehigh 13 for Butler and 11 each for Spieker and Dunn, who had three treys. Rewoldt added five points and Teske three. For the Comets (0-2 overall), Dolphin netted 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds with eight points for Logan Mann and Blake Mann. L. Mann, who had two of the team’s three triples, missed most of the second half after a shoulder injury early in the third. Like the girl’s game, the Tigers enjoyed an advantage at the charity stripe, going 13-of-23 to the Comets’ 4-of-10.
