GHV girls’ basketball coach Matt Erpelding will rely on youth as he navigates the Cardinal squad through the schedule this season. With only three seniors and two juniors on the roster, a number of sophomores will be expected to step into key roles in Erpelding’s lineup. Many of those sophomores logged considerable minutes as freshmen last season as GHV struggled on the way to a 5 – 17 overall record. Coach Erpelding LV FRQĂ€ GHQW WKDW WKH H[SHULHQFH gained by those youthful players combined with strong leadership from the few upperclassmen will produce a stronger GHV team. The Cards will look to three returning upperclassmen to lend their experience to the squad. Most notable on the list is senior forward Hannah Lau. Lau was an honorable mention all-conference player last season after leading the team in scoring, rebounding and steals. “Hannah Lau has worked very hard on her game in the off season and I expect her to have a great senior year,â€? noted Erpelding. “Her versatility should open things up for other players to have a lot of success.â€? Makaya Shropshire also returns for her senior season as a letter winner. After seeing action off of the bench last year, Makaya is exSHFWHG WR EHFRPH D PRUH VLJQLĂ€ cant contributor this year. “Makaya will be asked to play a much larger role on this year’s team. Junior Jillian Heitland returns after earning a starting role for the Cards last season. That is one area where this team has made tremendous strides in since last season. We are sharing the basketball very well and giving up a good shot for a much better shot. pÂŞÄş "`ĸÀĺ{¯ÚÀĺŸÂ„ÂŁÂŻp€Ä&#x; There have been very few seasons over the past decade and a half where the Cardinal boys’ basketball team has not been in the hunt for a conference title. The Cards were in the running for the trophy consistently through the old North Iowa Conference years and since the league realignment have been contenders in the TIC West. Last year an upset loss at Forest City cost the Cards the OHDJXH FKDPSLRQVKLS DV *+9 Ă€ Q ished at 14 – 2 while going 16 – 4 overall. Head coach Joe Albertson has four returning letter winners at his disposal as he begins his tenth season leading the Cards. Senior guards Johnny O’Connor and

Albertson’s team had plenty of depth a year ago and that trend has continued into this season. Senior guard Chase Theobald along with junior guards Ryan Meyers and Connor Burke were all regular members of last season’s rotation. Also expected to compete for contributing roles in the lineup are senior forwards Logan Dalbeck and Ryley Kozisek, junior guards Matthew Heinemann, Ray Catalodo, Colton Schroeder and Jonah Albertson along with junior center Jack Van Dusseldorp. Albertson noted that sophomore guard Jared Graham has shown potential LQ SUDFWLFH DV ZHOO DQG FRXOG Ă€ W into the scheme of things. The Cardinals will open their season on November 29 at home against North Iowa and will then travel to Forest City on December 2 to face the Indians.

West Hancock found themselves in the thick of the TIC West girls’ basketball race last year and head coach Paul Sonius is no doubt hoping to be in that position again this year. The Eagles were 13 – 3 in league play last season and 19 – 4 overall. Two of West Hancock’s three conference losses came at the

hands of North Union. The Eagles have graduated two of their top three scorers from a year ago so Sonius will look to senior forward Faith Hammer to lead his team this season. Hammer averaged 13 points per game last season. Joining Hammer from last year’s starting lineup is junior Kelly

Leerar. Leerar averaged just under 11 points per game as a sophomore while leading the team in assists. West Hancock has enjoyed successful seasons over the past couple of years, winning conference titles and advancing to the Class 1A state basketball tournament. Critical to the success of those teams were a pair of impressive guards who led the Eagles in virtually every statistical category. Nate Paulus and Connor Sonius have moved on, so one of head coach Brian Peterson’s biggest challenges will be replacing those two stars. This year’s Eagle squad has a tough act to follow. A year ago West Hancock won the 7,& :HVW 'LYLVLRQ FURZQ DQG À QLVKHG WKLUG at the state tournament. Peterson’s squad will look to repeat as TIC champs, but the league

netted just under four points-per-game. “Losing two all state guards who were four year starters for us will be a chal lenge, remarked Coach Peterson. “Our seniors accounted for 70% of our scoring and all other major categories. include Anthony Sherwood, Brady Hess and Spencer Formanek. Sherwood scored 11 pins while going 18 – 21 last season and Hess added four falls with a record of 7 – 28. Formanek completed the season with a record of 13 – 15 with seven falls. Jace Pringnitz had a great season as a freshman after going 30 – 11 overall with 20 pins. Tyler Nielson was 3 – 2 as a freshman at 285 pounds. Jenniges is encouraged by the experience returning but is also a little concerned about numbers. “We have some great experience back but not much depth. We’ll be close to having a full lineup with probably only two open weights at this point. We’re going to need some freshmen and new guys to step in to help us out.â€? Äş pŽ£„Àĺԓ££ĺãĺ„£€ĺÀÆŸ¯ªÂŽÄşĂ”Ÿ„ÀÆ£“ªŽĺÀÊp€ West Hancock wrestling coach Mark Sanger has a very positive outlook heading into the 2016-17 season. The sixth year head coach has a wealth of talent at his disposal that has him believing his team has a shot at challenging for the TIC West crown. That won’t be easy however, as the league has some very strong programs like Lake Mills and Eagle Grove in the mix making for what should be an exciting TIC tournament down the road. The Eagles will look to improve on last year’s 11 – 11 dual record. Four sophomores round out the list of returnees including Nathan Cabrera (106 pounds), Reed Brown (126 pounds), Dalton Subject (132 pounds) and Bennett Bruns (160 pounds). Several other Eagles will vie for spots in the lineup as upperclassmen Dawson Goodrich (junior, 145 pounds), Austin Brower (junior, 285 pounds) and Caleb Eckels (sophomore, 195 pounds) are hoping to

contribute. Sanger also has an impressive group of freshmen joining the squad, including Tate Hagen, Ian Gobeli, Tanner Hagen, Kevin Rodriquez, Josh Stromer, Tristan Hunt and Chandler Redenius. “This team has college caliber athletes, noted Coach Sanger. “Our team made vast improvement from the previous two seasons and we expect nothing less coming into this year. We return all wrestlers from last year’s team and have a strong freshman class. We are looking forward to seeing what our team can do this season. The Eagles will open the season on Thursday, December 1 for a triangular at Eagle Grove that also includes GHV. On Saturday, December 3 West Hancock will compete in the Okoboji Tournament.
