They also oversee more than 250 nurseries and grow-finish sites. Christensen Farms & Feedlots, Inc. was nominated for the Iowa Venture Award by Prairie Energy Cooperative. Kirk Brincks, director of Asset Management for Christensen Farms, stated Christensen Farms has built six other similar facilities in other locations in the last year and half. Brincks credited the cooperation and the behind-the-scenes work of Hancock County Economic Development Corporation Jill Kramer, the City of Garner, Prairie Energy Cooperative, Dean Snyder Construction and others for making it a “very smooth project.” “We were able to complete the project on time and within our budget,” said Brincks. Duncan Heights completes transition to new location Rebecca Peter

gleadernews@qwestoffice.net GARNER –Duncan Heights, Inc., is a non-profit organization serving persons with mental health and intellectual disabilities. The agency (formerly known as the county home) was privatized as Duncan Heights in 1989. This summer, Duncan Heights transitioned 37 clients from the county-owned property 5 miles east of Garner, to Supported Community Living homes or apartments at Britt, Forest City, Clear Lake, Garner and Grafton. The change was to meet federal requirements of the Olmstead Act to integrate residents the community. Earlier this fall, the agency also

moved its offices to 236 State Street in Garner (the former Video Place). “It was kind of a long process,” said Duncan Heights Director Heidi Hansen. “Our number one priority was transitioning our residents out. We had to find housing and had to make sure everyone fit with what they needed in housing.” The transitioning process started in July with the first group of clients. A second group was transitioned to neighboring communities in August. “The challenge was to group people together, who first of all, could live together well. We had people who would like to have lived totally alone, but it was not in their best interest to do that,” Hansen said.

Another challenge was finding affordable housing that would meet the physical needs of some clients. “We have several clients with limited mobility, who need walkers or would not be able to climb stairs,” she noted. Since clients are located in various communities, more staff was added. Duncan Heights has 25 full-time and 10 part-time employees. “We have been very lucky that the staff we had at the facility has transitioned into positions to care for people in the communities,” Hansen said. “With the transition to independent living, our residents now have the opportunity to make choices in their daily living that they didn’t have before.”

“That has been a challenge for some, and for others it has been very enjoyable to be able to cook and choose what they want to eat…to go to the grocery store…things they hadn’t done for years.” Hansen added that the downside sometimes making less than healthy food selections - is something we all have done. “But our staff is providing the guidance. Supervision and skill training is their role now,” she said. “You see how people have been able to grow. We’ve been able to tap into their desire to do things for themselves. It’s been very positive for their mental health and outlook on life.” DUNCAN HEIGHTS to page 3

Santa comes to Britt By Travis Fischer Santa Claus came to town last week in Britt as the Hobo Days committee held their fifth annual Christmas fundraiser at the Britt Municipal Building on Friday, December 2. “It’s nice to do something for the kids in our community,” said committee president Amy Boekelman. The committee prepared 250 hot dogs and bowls of ice cream for guests to enjoy while waiting to talk to Jolly ol’ St. Nick. Hot dogs were provided by Britt Auto Service while, the Britt Food Center donated the potato chips

and Ewing Funeral Home sponsored the ice cream. Along with the dinner, guests signed up for gift basket drawing and two lucky kids six and under were able to draw for bicycles donated by Jerry and Arlene Christensen. The dinner itself functions as a free will donation fundraiser for the committee, with proceeds going towards entertainment for next year’s Hobo Day’s event. The committee will also be selling Christmas wreaths until December 19. The dinner was a hit with the kids

as people lined up across the room to have their picture taken with Santa Claus, Mrs. Clause, and a helper elf. “We just have a good time,” said Boekelman. “Any time we can get together and do something fun we’re all for it.” Along with the dinner, the Hobo Days committee has helped kick off the Christmas season with a memory tree in the city gazeebo, which allows people a place to remember loved ones during the holidays.

West Hancock funding needs Guest Editorial By Wayne Kronemann, West Hancock Superintendent West Hancock district is doing great in all aspects to include academics, extra and co-curricular activities and finances. We continue to strive to get better every day through hard work from the staff and students. As I told one staff member a couple a weeks ago I would put us up against any school. We have a good thing going. It doesn’t matter what the state or federal government come up with we are always up to the task. It does not matter if they call it Common Core or Iowa Standards we will work hard to make sure the kids are getting a good education with multiple opportunities for success. One of the major issues the school board is looking at right now is how to keep up with the growing demands of our aging facilities and equipment. We have been doing the best we can to fix, replace, and add facilities and equipment that makes it a better place for your children and grandchildren to go to school. The learning environment is so important to a good education. This is why the school board regularly seeks input on facilities from the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC). The board uses this prioritized list to make changes in the district. They also use their best judgment on other smaller items if needed. The community has been fantastic in supporting the needs of the district through taxes and fundraisers and we definitely appreciate that. However the rate at which those

funds come in, the inflexibility of the use of state funds, and the lack of growth of state funds has put a damper on our progression of facilities improvement. That is why the board is currently looking at the facilities needs list and exploring ways to finance these future items. Right now as taxpayers in the district you are paying a total of $1.69 + $.33 = $2.02/$1000 of assessed property value for facilities and equipment improvements. At the end of the 2019-20 school year the elementary building will be paid off which is bond at a $1.69/$1000. Right now the board has an approved non-voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) that is $.33/$1000. For the 2020-21 school year your rates could drop $1.69 or you could approve an additional Voted PPEL of $1.01 for a total of $1.34/$1000 still saving $.68/$1000 on your taxes down from a total of $2.02. These extra funds would allow us to take care of facility and equipment needs at a faster rate. This would be limited to ten years of increased PPEL collection. This would allow us to take care of such items, as updating windows and doors throughout the district. It would also allow for much needed fixes on the building roofing, flooring, lockers, updates to the high school commons area, etc. These are things that need to be done but we currently do not have the funds to do them at a fast enough rate. Thank you for your consideration on this issue over the next couple of years and watch for opportunities give input to this option or possibly others. You could also take time to have discussions with your school board or myself about this. All of our contact information can be found on our school website.

OPINION / EDITORIAL

THE LEADER

Pizza and the Rabbit Hole

For about a month now, since just before Election Day, the seedier corners of the Internet have been obsessing over “Pizzagate,” a conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton running a child trafficking ring out of a Washington D.C. pizzeria. The political conspiracy combined with the absurdity made for a catnip like combination for the internet trolls that frequent places like Reddit’s /r/The_Donald, who went so far to create a spin-off message board dedicated to the topic. Taking a life of its own, the conspiracy theory has created its own mythology, tying the pizzeria from the Clinton Foundation to Satanism to Brazilian football. Did a Hollywood celeb talk about pizza? Must be part of the conspiracy. Did a politician have their photo taken with a child? Must be part of the conspiracy. Why hasn’t the Washington Post covered it? Must be part of the conspiracy. And what does Janet Reno have to do with all of this anyway? Must be part of the conspiracy.

For the last month there have been bombastic YouTube videos and “news” articles, each eager to share the big revelation that will “blow the whole thing wide open.” And if it doesn’t happen, well then at least they got a big spike on their traffic for that day. It’s hard to say how many people actually believe in the Pizzagate conspiracy. A couple weeks back I had a conversation with a Trump supporter that admitted he only frequents places like /r/The_Donald because it’s fun to participate in its silliness. While I’m sure some people actually believe in the conspiracy theory, I suspect most people are treating it like a game. I understand the appeal. Conspiracy theories are fun. Heck, I’ve spent the last couple months following a series of YouTube videos predicting a reboot of the Pokemon franchise, linking the designs of new characters to medieval alchemy, Norse mythology, and the Book of Revelations. It’s not a complicated formula. Find one connection that seems plausible, then extrapolate ten more connections out of it. It can be fun to take a trip down the rabbit hole. But that’s a silly theory about a video game. This is a real life business run by real life people who have had their real life turned upside down by internet trolls looking for cheap laughs. All of which came to a head this weekend when a North Carolina man decided to do some “self-investigation” of the pizzeria. With a gun. Thankfully, nobody was hurt during the incident. A shot was apparently fired, but the man was otherwise arrested peacefully. But it could have gone differently. It’s hard to decide who is more cul-

had so much fun with the Duncan Heights residents that it’s been our activity of choice for the last several years.” He added, I know that this is a bit cliché, but I can tell you with all sincerity, that we get a great deal more from the residents than they get from us.”

pable in this situation. The people who don’t know better and actually believe in the conspiracy nonsense, or the people that do know better and perpetuate it anyway. This behavior isn’t limited to just Internet trolls. This is the post-fact world that we live in. A world where social media has enabled us to create a personalized bubble of reality where anything that reaffirms your pre-established beliefs must be true and anything that challenges them is just part of the “lamestream media.” Everybody does this to some degree, myself included. It takes a conscious effort to challenge your perception. Not everybody has the time, energy, or inclination to do so. We all know that person on our social media that posts crazy stories about vapor trails in the sky, or the Department of Homeland Security buying up all the ammo in the country, or how global warming is a hoax. That person that posts whatever has a catchy headline without caring about whether or not what they’re posting is true. You know. The kind of person we just elected to be president. This is the inevitable result. One might think it’s harmless to share a silly story, but somebody else might actually believe it. For better or worse, the internet has turned us all into the media. Facebook is the largest distributor of news in the nation. That effectively means everybody is now the editor of their own news aggregate. It’s a power that should not be taken lightly. Travis Fischer is a news writer for Mid-America Publishing and tries to keep his crazy theories on video games and movies.

The NIACC Singers will sing “Believe” from The Polar Express with a solo dance by Elyssa Wilson. The show

will also include solo big band inspired performances by NIACC music majors Lydia Ouverson of Mason City singing “White Christmas” and Emily Erhardt of Fairbank singing “A Christmas Song.” Add in novelty selections including “Slow Rockin’ Christmas,” “Mele Kalikimaka,” and “Christmas Time is No Time to Diet,” and you have the recipe for a fun holiday filled afternoon. “The end of the show will bring back a traditional choral feel,” Ryner said. Included will be Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria;” “Glow,” by Eric Whitacre; and “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing!” as sung by the Morman Tabernacle Choir. A featured solo

with orchestra of “O Holy Night,” by sophomore soprano Harleigh McKee from Webster City will surely be a highlight of the show. Ryner added, “The NIACC Concert Choir has been out on several occasions throughout the semester and received great reviews at all of our stops. Their featured spot at the end of the concert will surely be poignant and reverent.” For tickets to the show, call the NIACC Box Office at 1-888-466-4222, extension 4188. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.niacc.edu/ boxoffice. Please note the change of performance time from previously advertised information.

The 31st annual North Iowa TubaChristmas concert will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, in Southbridge Mall’s center court in Mason City. Any tuba, sousaphone, euphonium or baritone player of any age who would like to participate is asked to attend a rehearsal on Saturday morning in the Mason City High School band room. Registration is at 10 a.m., with a rehearsal starting at 10:30 a.m. Musicians should bring their own instruments, decorated with seasonal ornaments, lights, or bright Christmas colors, a Santa hat and music stand. TubaChristmas is a performance of

favorite Christmas carols by area tuba, baritone and euphonium players. The North Iowa concert will be one of more than 200 similar tuba concerts given throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Starting in 1985, with only six players, the North Iowa TubaChristmas has grown to be one of the largest in the nation. It is one of Iowa’s longest running TubaChristmas events, and traditionally has been the largest in the state, drawing more than 100 tuba, baritone and euphonium players annually from North Iowa and southern Minnesota. TubaChristmas is celebrating its 43rd anniversary nationwide. It be-

gan in 1974 at the ice rink stage of New York City’s Rockefeller Center, where more than 300 tuba, baritone and euphonium players gathered to honor the memory of world-renowned tuba player and Iowa native, William J. Bell, who was born in Creston on Christmas Day, 1902. TubaChristmas was created by Harvey Phillips to honor Bell, and the traditional carols were specially arranged for the first TubaChristmas performance by American composer Alec Wilder, who died Christmas Eve, 1980. Phillips, an Indiana University music professor, died on October 20th of 2010. VENTURA – Storage of commercial boat hoists on residential property was discussed by the Ventura City Council, Nov. 28. According to Else Taylor, city administrator, a temporary option would be for owners to seek a Conditional Use Permit from the Board of Adjustment for the nonconforming use of the property. The other option is permanent and may be more appropriate, given the length of time this property has been used in some capacity for the storage of boat hoists. This option would be for the owners to request a zone change for the property from residential to commercial and would eliminate repeat requests for a Con-

ditional Use Permit for the ongoing nonconforming use of the property. In other business, the council approved the first reading and waived second and third readings on an ordinance pertaining to temporary water service shutoffs to homes that are vacant for an extended period of time. A property owner may request that water service shut off at the curb valve when the property is expected to be vacant for an extended period of time. The city will charge a $150 fee for turning in the water meter and $150 fee for returning water service and the meter. The fees still apply if a licensed plumber shuts off or turns on the water at the curb valve. Taylor said the change in the utility temporary vacancy ordinance is due to the change in the water rates that go into effect on Jan. 1.

Consider giving kids less stuff, more time during holidays

By Mackenzie Johnson and Laura Sternweis, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach AMES, Iowa – Although the holidays can be a season of giving, sometimes the focus shifts to a season of getting, or so it may seem from a child’s perspective, says Mackenzie Johnson, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “It’s OK to give gifts to our children. We all want to see our children happy, and as parents we give from the goodness of our hearts,” said Johnson, who specializes in family life issues. “However, it’s easy to overdo it, especially around the holidays. This can become a pattern, and before we know it, we’re overindulging our children – giving them too much, too soon and for too long.” Research shows that overindulging children puts them at risk for a variety of negative outcomes, including a need for immediate gratification, an overblown sense of entitlement and a materialistic mindset and goals. Children who are overindulged may have poor self-control, as well as a more difficult time developing adult life skills, Johnson said. Giving children too much stuff is just one form of overindulgence, Johnson explained. Other forms include soft structure, meaning a lack of rules and responsibilities, and over-nurturing – doing things for children that they should be doing themselves. So how can parents know whether they are crossing the line into over-

indulging their children? Researchers Jean Illsley Clarke, David J. Bredehoft and Connie Dawson started the Overindulgence Project, Overindulgence.info, in 1996, studying the relationship between childhood overindulgence and subsequent adult problems and parenting practices. To date, they have completed 10 studies investigating overindulgence involving more than 3,500 participants. The researchers suggest parents ask themselves four questions: Do these gifts use a disproportionate amount of family resources? Does what I am doing harm others, society or the planet? Does this meet my needs (as the adult) more than the needs of my child? Does it hinder my child from learning developmental tasks? If parents answer yes to one or

more of these questions, they probably are overindulging their children. However, there are some simple ways to get back on the right track. “First of all, if you have been overindulgent, take responsibility. Being in denial about it means that you can’t change anything,” Johnson said. “Second, forgive yourself. If you’ve gone overboard in the past, don’t beat yourself up about it. Look at how you can move forward, do things differently and learn from your previous experience. “Next, work on one problem area at a time. Don’t try to suddenly change everything about your parenting style at once, as that will likely be too overwhelming,” she noted. “Maybe you start by deciding not to give your children so much stuff – toys, electronics, etc. – this holiday season, but consider giving them the gift of your time.” For example, parents could create a “gift certificate” for a parent and child lunch date, or plan for an afternoon playing board games or having a baking day together. “Or start even smaller and decide you won’t give in to your child’s next temper tantrum at the grocery store,” Johnson said. “Just because you’ve overindulged your children in the past, doesn’t mean your children have been damaged forever. You can get back on track and raise your children to become responsible adults who show respect for others,” she said.

Handling poinsettias during the holiday season By Richard Jauron and Greg Wallace, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach AMES, Iowa – One of the best parts of the holiday season is adding colorful seasonal plants to the home. That includes the poinsettia. However, poinsettias do require special care to reach their full potential. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists can help answer queries about poinsettias and other holiday plants. To have additional questions answered, contact the ISU Hortline at 515-2943108 or hortline@iastate.edu. What should I look for when purchasing a poinsettia? Poinsettias are available in a wide range of colors. Red is the most popular color. However, poinsettias also are available in burgundy, pink, salmon, white, cream and gold. In addition, there are bicolored, marbled and speckled poinsettias. The colorful part of the poinsettia, commonly referred to as the plant’s flowers, are actually modified leaves or bracts. The true flowers are yellow to green, button-like objects located in the center of the bract. When selecting a poinsettia, choose a plant with dark green foliage and brightly colored bracts. The true flowers should be shedding little or no pollen. Avoid poinsettias with wilted foliage, broken stems or few leaves. How do I care for a poinsettia? To prevent damage from cold temperatures, purchase the poinsettia at COMMUNITY CALENDAR Continued from page 1 book club will meet to discuss “Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor” by Lisa Kleypas. the end of the shopping trip, place the poinsettia in a plant sleeve or carefully wrap it before going outdoors and set the plant in a heated vehicle. Exposing the poinsettia to cold temperatures, even for a short time, may cause its bracts and leaves to blacken and drop. As soon as you get home, unwrap the poinsettia and place it near a sunny window or other well-lit location. However, don’t let the plant touch the cold windowpane. Also, keep the poinsettia away from cold drafts or heat sources. Poinsettias prefer temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Water needs can be determined with your finger. Check the potting soil daily. When the soil surface becomes dry to the touch, water the plant until water begins to flow out the bottom of the

pot. The pots of most poinsettias are placed inside decorative pot covers. When watering a poinsettia, carefully remove the pot cover, water the plant in the sink, then place the poinsettia back into the pot cover. Is the poinsettia poisonous? Contrary to popular belief, the poinsettia is not poisonous. However, it is not intended for human or animal consumption. It is still advisable to keep the poinsettia out of the reach of small children and pets. One potential health concern with the poinsettia is dermatitis or an irritation to the skin. When a poinsettia stem is cut or broken, milky sap oozes from the wound. Some individuals may develop a skin irritation if the milky sap comes in contact with their skin.

GHV boys top GHV girls win twice North Iowa, Forest City GHV is expected to contend for the TIC West Division boys’ basketball title and the Cardinals got off to a good start toward that goal with two league wins last week. The Cards picked up a pair of unimpressive wins over North Iowa and Forest City on Tuesday and Friday but dropped a heartbreaker to Osage in TIC crossover action on Saturday. TIC boys’ basketball teams jumped right into league play last week and GHV opened their season at home against North Iowa. The Bison finished at the bottom of the standings a year ago and are not expected to be real strong again this year. GHV on the other hand is considered to be one of the top teams in the league but in this first outing for both squads North Iowa was in the game through the entire first half. The Cards pulled ahead 13 – 9 after one quarter of play and maintained the slim margin at halftime. GHV looked like a much different team in the third quarter and essentially put the game away by outscoring their guests 22 – 7. Leading 51 – 30 heading into the final period, GHV got the bench involved and cruised to the 69 – 56 win. Nick Joynt scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead GHV on the night. James Betz followed with 13 points, six boards and two blocked shots followed by Logan Dalbeck with a dozen points. Chase Theobald was the fourth Cardinal in double figures netting 11 points. Ryan Meyers grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists with three steals on the way to scoring five points. Also in the GHV scorebook were Johnny O’Connor with five, Holden Hutcheson with four and Jack Van Dusseldorp with three. Cardinal coach Joe Albertson commented, “That first game is always exciting especially for those players who step on the floor for their first varsity game. Our nerves got the best of us. We may have tried to do too much to make plays early on, but the boys got into a groove in the third quarter. We got big contributions off the bench from Chase Theobald and Logan Dalbeck. Both of them ran the floor well and got to the rim.” Forest City is always a difficult place for Cardinal teams to play and that was very evident on Friday. The Cardinals got off to a miserable start, converting only one field goal in the first quarter as Forest City also played poorly on the way to a 9 – 2 lead.

GHV’s James Betz dunks the ball during the Cards 54-52 loss to Osage. The momentum turned in the second quarter as GHV outscored their hosts 12 – 2 on the way to a 14 – 11 halftime lead. The two teams played virtually even in the third quarter with the Cardinals holding a 27 – 23 lead after three quarters of play. Forest City made a run at the Cards in the fourth quarter but GHV controlled the tempo in the final minutes on the way to the 43 – 36 victory. Nick Joynt led the Cards with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists followed by Holden Hutcheson with a dozen points and six rebounds. Ryan Meyers added six points, five boards and four assists while Johnny O’Connor chipped in five points. Logan Dalbeck and Chase Theobald completed the scoring total with four and two points respectively and James Betz grabbed six rebounds and five steals. “We have possibly never had a worse start to a game in ten years,” remarked Albertson. “It mirrored our opening night win with North Iowa. We were forcing passes and shots and playing without poise in the first quarter. Thank goodness we play four quarters. Our defense picked up in the second and third quarters by forcing

turnovers and contesting shots while our offense started to find a little bit of rhythm behind Holden Hutcheson and Nick Joynt. Each of these players had some big shots down the stretch to push us to a victory.” GHV was looking to start the season 3 – 0 and after the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Osage the Cardinals appeared to be on the way. The Cards caught Osage off guard early in the game to build a 16 – 3 lead heading into the second period. The Green Devils then regrouped to close the gap to 29 – 21 by halftime. A big momentum switch in the third quarter helped Osage to make up the difference on the scoreboard and eventually take go ahead. Leading 39 – 36 heading into the final period the Green Devils continued their run, expanding their advantage to nine points with three minutes remaining in the game. GHV put together an impressive run at the end of the game that put the Cardinals into the driver’s seat with a onepoint lead with 12 seconds remaining in the game. Osage got a big break on their last possession, knocking down a three-pointer at the buzzer to score the 54- 52 win. Nick Joynt scored 15 points with five rebounds and four steals to lead GHV on the night. James Betz added 10 points, five boards and two blocked shots followed by Johnny O’Connor with nine points. Ryan Meyers was credited with four assists to go with six points while Chase Theobald and Jared Graham chipped in three points apiece. Logan Dalbeck and Holden Hutcheson completed the scoring total with two points each. “We knew Osage had talent and confidence after two big wins,” noted Coach Albertson. “I was hoping we could get off to a good start for a change and play with a lead, and we did behind a couple early buckets by Ryan Meyers. We played our best basketball of the year in the first half. We received some key plays from Connor Burke and Jared Graham that kept us in the game. However, we struggled with some defensive switches in the third and fourth quarters, and Osage made us pay. We made a great run late with pressure defense and we were able to get the lead with seven seconds to go with two Johnny O’Connor free throws. However, Osage got enough space to hit a shot right before the buzzer to spoil our best effort of the season. We have a lot of work to do to become the team we want to be.” The Cardinals are 2 – 0 in TIC West play and 2 – 1 overall. They will continue the TIC season this week at home against West Hancock on Tuesday and on the road at Belmond on Friday.

With three games on last week’s schedule, GHV girls’ basketball coach Matt Erpelding would have loved to add three wins to the Cardinals’ record. The Cards didn’t win them all, but they did manage to top Charles City on Monday and North Iowa on Tuesday before stumbling at Forest City on Friday. What began as a close game quickly turned into a rout in Monday’s win over Charles City. GHV led only 5 – 2 two minutes into the game but the Cards then outscored Charles City 11 – 2 through the final six minutes of the first quarter to pull ahead 16 – 4 heading into the second period. The Cards then put the game out of reach, outscoring the Comets 20 – 1 in the second quarter to lead 36 – 5 at intermission. GHV then eased off in the second half with bench personnel seeing plenty of playing time. The Cards remained in control, leading 46 – 15 after three quarters before posting the 58 – 26 win. Jillian Heitland and Maddie Williams each scored 10 points to lead GHV in the book. Jade Hanson followed with eight points while Hannah Lau added six points and four rebounds in limited action. Sadie Oulman came off the bench to score four points and grab five rebounds as Mara Anderson, Makaya Shropshire, Nicole Upmeyer and Carlee Frayne also scored four points each. Jenna Hanson and Alison Johnson rounded out the scoring total with two points apiece. Cardinal coach Matt Erpelding commented, “We struggled making shots in the first couple minutes of the game but once we settled down I thought we played really well. We shot 67% from the floor in the second quarter while holding the Comets to only one point which allowed us to pull away to a big halftime lead. I was able to rest my starters in the second half which will pay huge dividends later in the week as we get into the conference portion of our schedule. Four of the five starters played less than 20 minutes and with Hannah nursing a minor injury I was able to rest her considerably as she only logged 11 minutes. I was very happy with our bench play as they were able to maintain the 31 point lead in the third quarter and even when we emptied the bench mid way thru the fourth they held their own against the Comet starters. I love the way we are sharing the basketball right now! We are seeing the floor pretty well and giving up good shots for even better ones. I thought we played with more

GHV’s Jillian Heitland shoots from the baseline during the Cards 66-56 win over North Iowa. Heitland scored 18 points in the game. energy than we did in the Osage game, but we need to continue to raise that level as we move forward in the season.” The Cardinals opened TIC West play with a solid win at home over North Iowa. The Cards pulled ahead 16 – 9 after one quarter of play and then held off a Bison spurt in the second quarter to lead 31 – 24 at halftime. North Iowa closed the gap to three points again in the third quarter and then rallied to lead 50 – 48 midway through the final period. An 8 – 0 run put the Cards back in front and GHV made free throws down the stretch to seal the 66 – 56 win. Hannah Lau was big in the win, scoring 18 points with 14 rebounds, six steals and two blocked shots. Jillian Heitland also scored 18 points to go with six rebounds followed by Maddie Williams with 11 points and three assists. Makaya Shropshire chipped in seven points with five steals while Jade Hanson came off the bench to score seven points with 10 boards. Sadie Oulman added three points and five rebounds and Carlee Frayne scored two. “We got off to a good start as we were able to use some ball pressure to create several turnovers and get some easy buckets,” remarked Erpelding. “Unfortunately after the first couple minutes we didn’t play very well on either end of the court. We struggled getting any offensive flow as we committed numerous turnovers. Defensively we had trouble adjusting to how the game was being officiated and had some girls get into foul trouble. Trailing by two late in the game we had to go back to some full court pressure to try and regain some momentum. A few quick steals sparked us to go on a run to stretch the lead as the game had been in doubt. The saving grace was the free throw line. We were 24-37 while they were only 8-23. We need to continue to work on our decision making against full court pressure as well as our offensive execution.” Forest City is expected to be one of the top teams in the TIC and Cardinal fans should be pleased with

what they saw in the first quarter of Friday’s game. GHV came out strong on the way to a 15 – 8 lead after one quarter of play. The Indian offense got on track in the second quarter to pull ahead 26 – 20 at intermission. GHV pulled to within two points early in the third quarter and were looking to regain the lead but Forest City held off the rally and pushed the score to 42 – 30 with one period remaining. Both teams sputtered on the offensive end of the floor and Forest City finished with a 49 – 34 victory. Hannah Lau led GHV with 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Jade Hanson came off the Cardinal bench to score on seven of 10 free throws with six rebounds while Makaya Shropshire chipped in six points, four boards and four steals. Jillian Heitland added six points with five rebounds and Maddie Williams completed the scoring total with two points. Mara Anderson contributed five rebounds to the Cardinal effort. “We started the game with the best offensive execution we have had all year,” stated Coach Erpelding. “Unfortunately that only lasted for a couple possessions and we struggled offensively the remainder of the game. We ended the first quarter with a 15-8 lead but as the game went on we had a few defensive breakdowns and did a poor job of rebounding that enabled Forest City to pull away from us. We only shot 26% from the floor as we couldn’t get perimeter shots to fall and missed numerous bunnies. The one positive from the game is that we did a better job of playing defense without committing fouls as Forest City only shot 7 frees throws. It was frustrating to get off to such a nice start and then lose our mental focus and let the game get away from us. We need to bounce back with a much better performance on Tuesday night.” The Cardinals are now 1 – 1 in TIC play and 2 – 2 overall. They will host West Hancock on Tuesday before traveling to Belmond on Friday. Selected individual statistics from last week’s games follow.

Cardinals wrestle at St. Ansgar dual tourney A short-handed GHV wrestling squad traveled to St. Ansgar on Saturday for their first tournament action of the season. Several open weights made it difficult for the Cardinals as GHV managed to prevail in only one of the three duals. The Cards opened the day with a one-point win over St. Ansgar. The team score was tied at 42 apiece after the final match was completed and the eighth criteria finally gave GHV the winning point. Five Cardinal forfeits in the match made it tough for GHV to earn the win but GHV won six matches by fall and another by forfeit to tie the team total at 42 apiece. Earning pins against the Saints were Austin Case (113 pounds), Brady Hess at 145 pounds, Anthony Sherwood at 152 pounds, Conner Shaw at 182 pounds, Buck Weaver at 195 pounds and Grady Umbarger at 220 pounds. GHV’s second dual of the day had the Cardinals facing a strong Clear Lake team. Conner Shaw’s second period pin was the only individual win for the Cards as Clear Lake posted a 78 – 6 win. Shaw’s victory tied him as the all-time win leader in GHV history. In the third match of the day, Clarksville took advantage of four Cardinal forfeits on the way to a 46 – 21 win. Drew Furst scored on a 21-second pin at 106 pounds, while Austin Case and Conner Shaw won their matches by forfeit. Completing the team score for GHV was Anthony Sherwood with an 8 – 2 decision at 152 pounds. GHV finished the day with a 36 – 27 loss to Northwood-Kensett. The Cards picked up two falls and three forfeits against the Vikings. Conner Shaw and Grady Umbarger both scored first period pins against Northwood-Kensett while Drew Furst, Austin Case and Buck Weaver earned forfeits on the day. In spite of losing three of the four dual matches Cardinal coach Cory Jenniges was able to note positives for a number of individuals. “After going 4 – 0 Shaw finished the day with

GHV’s Austin Case has the clear advantage in last week’s 113-pound match against Eagle Grove. Case started the season with a second-period pin over this Eagle opponent.

Cardinals open with double dual

Wrestling season officially opened for the GHV squad last week with a triangular meet at Eagle Grove. The Cardinals wrestled well in their first outing of the season but a couple of open weights were too much to overcome in losses to their hosts and West Hancock. GHV’s forfeits at 132 and 285 pounds proved to be the difference as Eagle Grove outscored the Cardinals 46 – 35. Austin Case and Zach Eichmann opened their seasons with falls at 113 and 120 pounds. Jace Pringnitz and Brady Hess also scored pins at 138 and 145 pounds while Colyn Schoneman stuck his 160-pound opponent. Conner Shaw missed out on a pin but did score extra points with a technical fall at 170 pounds. The West Hancock dual included a total of five forfeited matches between the two schools. The Eagles gave up

points at the three lightest weights while GHV surrendered matches at 132 and 220 pounds. Jace Pringnitz earned his second pin of the night with a first period fall. Colyn Schoneman also scored another pin at 160 pounds while Conner Shaw moved up to 182 pounds to win a 4 – 3 decision. West Hancock scored five pins in the match on the way to a 45 – 33 team victory. Cardinal coach Cory Jenniges commented, “These were two close duals that we were in right to the end. Having two open weights hurt us some. We are a young team so I didn’t really know what to expect to be quite honest. I was pleasantly surprised. Our freshmen wrestled well for us. Coach Bass has done a nice job with those guys at the junior high level. They have stepped in the room and competed from day one and it showed last night. The upperclassmen did their job

and wrestled well. Our inexperience got us at a couple weights but that will improve as the season goes on as we get more mat time. Our numbers are up and that is getting guys more partners and competition in the practice room. I’m really proud of the kids even though we lost both duals.” The Cardinals competed in their first tournament action of the season on Saturday at St. Ansgar. Results and summaries of that competition appear in a separate story in The Leader Sports Section. Complete results from the triangular at Eagle Grove follow.

NIACC Community Education offers youth tumbling program

NIACC Community Education will be offering a youth tumbling program this winter on Thursdays for youth three years and older. The winter session will be in Garner at the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura elementary school lunchroom. Classes will begin January 12 and will run for 12 weeks. Tumbling classes are offered by skill level, not by age, except for the preschool program. There will be a three-year-old preschool class and a 4-year-old preschool class. The preschool classes will last 30 minutes each.

The school age tumbling classes are based on a child’s skill level. Each class will do the same activities, but the youth will be honing their skills and techniques to advance to more challenging techniques. Classes levels are: Rollers – cannot do a cartwheel yet; Cart Wheelers – able to do cartwheels and land on feet, can also bridge with head off the ground; Benders and Bouncers – tumbler can bridge back from a standing position. This year we will be offering a class for cheerleaders who would like to learn tumbling.

Approximate class times will be: Rollers - 3:40 to 4:25 p.m., Cart Wheelers - 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.; threeyear-old preschool - 5:20 to 5:50 p.m.; four-year-old preschool - 5:55 to 6:25 p.m.; Benders and Bouncers 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.; cheerleaders - 7:20 to 8:05 p.m. Registration information and the cost of the program is available by contacting Carol Peterson, NIACC Community Education Program Manager at 641-923-2252 or petercar@niacc.edu.

Christensen Farms & Feedlots, Inc. of Garner, Iowa, received the 2016 Venture Award recognizing the company for its addition of a bio-security wash complex to it’s facility in the Touchstone Energy Park in Garner, Iowa. Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, presented the award on behalf of the Iowa Area Development Group L.C., (IADG). Pictured left to right: Rand Fisher, IADG; Todd Foss, Prairie Energy; Jill Kramer, Hancock County Economic Development; Bo Wright and Kirk Brincks from Christensen Farms; Bill Northey, Secretary of Agriculture; Becky Bradburn, Prairie Energy; and Jim Vermeer, Corn Belt Power Cooperative. VENTURE AWARD from page 1 completed in June of this year. “Everything was very efficient,” he said. Brinks explained that bio-security wash uses a multistep process to wash, sterilize, disinfect, dry and inspect the trailers used to transport Christensen Farms swine. “We dedicate about 7 manhours per trailer,” he said. “We have to absolutely guarantee that the trailer is sterilized so we don’t transfer any viruses or bacteria that might have come in with the previous load. We do that for the health and the welfare of the animals.” Garner Mayor Ken Mick, Councilman Tim Schmidt, City administrator Randy Lansing also attended the awards ceremony. “The City of Garner is pleased Christensen Farms choose Garner for

its new truck wash, and the City reciprocates the words of praise back to Christensen Farms and its employees,” said Lansing. “Their professionalism and commitment to doing things right, made working with them on this project a real pleasure. The company’s $2.8 million dollar investment into the facility and creation of five permanent full-time jobs are a real asset to Garner.” Jill Kramer, Hancock County Economic Development Executive Director added, “After the first meeting with Christensen Farms I knew they would be a great fit for Hancock County. I was impressed with their commitment to the communities of Garner and the pride in being leaders in their industry. They have proved to be great partners and we are lucky to have them in Hancock County!” “The Iowa Venture Awards Lun-

cheon provides a forum to celebrate the courage, contribution, innovation responsibility and vision of Iowa entrepreneurs,” said IADG President Rand Fisher. “IADG, on behalf of our sponsors, is proud to recognize these seven outstanding companies for their contribution to their community, region and state.” Other 2016 Iowa Venture Award recipients were: Iowa Fertilizer in rural Lee County (named Outstandin Business of the Year); Bratney Companies of Marshalltown; Concrete Machinery Inc. of Iowa in Paton; Great Lakes Communication Corp. of Spencer; Maassen Dairy Farms of Maurice; and Mogler Farms/Pig Hill West of Alvord. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Bill Northey, assisted in presenting the Iowa Venture Awards and honoring the Iowa companies and their leaders.

GoServ Global Co-Founder Ken DeYoung (right) and Laborers With Christ Missionary Les DeRoos discuss building 10 Safe T Homes® on this property next to the Village of Hope that includes 60 Safe T Homes®.

GoServ Global focuses on Haiti Hurricane Relief LES CAYES, HAITI - It’s been nearly two months since Hurricane Matthew devoured Haiti where Iowa-based GoServ Global rescues the vulnerable – orphans, widows, abandoned babies, displaced families, etc. Shacks that once served as homes before the hurricane are now missing roofs, or walls, or both. Hurricane Matthew damaged nearly every home in the area. The structures that families are living in seem impossible, yet they have nowhere else to go. GoServ Global is focusing relief efforts on housing. All of the Safe T Homes® withstood the 145 hurricane winds with minimal

damage and many lives were saved as up to 60 people crowded into the homes to ride out the storm. Thanks to donations, GoServ Global has already built more than 5 Safe T Homes® with 30 more Safe T Homes® enroute via three shipping containers. Roofs have been replaced on some of the GoServ Global traditional buildings that sustained damage. GoServ Global has already purchased land by the Village of Hope that includes 60 Safe T Homes®. An extra 150 community members have been staying at the Village of Hope because their homes were destroyed. DeYoung expects to build 10 more

Safe T Homes® on this property. GoServ Global will also focus building Safe T Homes® in Les Anglais, a community just west of Les Cayes that was totally destroyed. “The need is so great in this area - it’s the poorest of the poor,” shared GoServ Global Co-Founder Ken DeYoung. “Thousands and thousands of homes were wiped out because they were made with thatch. Many people died and now cholera is running rampant.” To learn more about GoServ and the Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund go to www.goservglobal.org/give and choose “Haiti Hurricane Matthew” in the dropdown.

Brown Butter Pecan Cinnamon Bars Recipe courtesy of Anolon Gourmet Cookware 10 ounces unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups coarsely chopped pecans, toasted Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 9x13-inch baking pan. In medium pot over medium-low to medium heat, heat butter until golden brown, stirring frequently

and making sure to scrape bottom of pan. Remove from heat and pour into bowl when golden brown to stop more coloring. Set aside. Whisk together sugars, eggs and vanilla extract. Whisk in butter in steady stream. Add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and pecans. Stir until evenly blended. Spread batter evenly into prepared pan. Bake until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Do not overcook or bars will be dry. Let cool to room temperature then cut into pieces.

lic, thyme and basil: cook 2 minutes. Add bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 5-6 minutes; remove from heat. Butter 9x13-inch baking dish. Whisk together eggs, milk, salt and pepper until well combined. Slowly pour mixture over top layer of bread. Cover with plastic wrap and place heavy objects (e.g., canned food) on top to weigh it down. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, or up to overnight. Heat oven to 350 F. Remove baking dish from refrigerator and uncover. Bake until strata is puffed and browned, and eggs are set, about 40-50 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes before cutting into serving pieces.

Santa visits Wesley

The Wesley Community Club had Santa visit on Saturday, Dec. 3. They served a supper of pork loin, cheesy potatoes, green beans, a bar, and punch. There were crafts for the kids including coloring, making a snow globe, and face painting. There was also a silent auction.

If the snow didn’t bother you Dale Dornbier of Wesley was giving horse drawn carriage rides. Santa he was also there giving out treats and listening to all the requests from the kids.
