EV boys look to begin a winning tradition in basketball Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor

2015-16 Season: 1-21 Head Coach: Caleb Lewis Coach Caleb Lewis is entering his first season at EV, fourth overall in coaching. Lewis comes by way of Missouri, and is looking to help bring a winning tradition to the English Valleys Bears. The Bears lose a lot from last season’s team, but that just means the opportunities to compete for playing time is ripe for the picking for these underclassmen. EV returns two starters, one of which is Will Tapken. Tapken is a good inside and outside post player who can play solid defense for the Bears. Jeff Montgomery is the other returning starter. Montgomery is a very smart, quick and a solid decision maker. Braydon Fischer also returns, although he wasn’t a full-time starter last season. Fischer is very quick and a good shooter with a high basketball IQ. EV will look to these three players to make a huge impact on their program this season. Ambrose Coffman returns as well for EV. He is a very scrappy player who can make some big plays with

EV girls look for redemption this season Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-16 Season: 4-16 Head Coach: Luke Castor The EV Bears Girls basketball program feels as though they are on the up swing this season. After being fodder for SICL opponents for the most part last season, the Bears are looking to redeem themselves and make good on 2016-17. EV lost three seniors from last year’s team, but they return a multitude of players who have been good contributors for several seasons’ now. Audrey Grove averaged over 12 points a game as a sophomore, and returns to a junior campaign that could see her average well over that figure. Sydney Olson was the third leading scorer last season and figures to be a major contributor once again for this year’s squad. Morgan Bruns looks to step her game up and make some noise for the Bears this season as well. Emily Westhoff led the team in assists last season and is looking for more dimes in 2016-17. Once again only three seniors are on the roster, but the majority of returning contributors were freshman and sophomores last year, so the experience is there for the Bears. The majority of

The Bears had a tough go of things last season at times as a

team, but individually they had two players who really shined. Zach Axmear enters his final season already a three-time State qualifier and placed all three times. Axmear’s incredible career thus far has already caught the attention of some of the top

collegiate programs and he will be wrestling at Iowa next year because of his abilities. His 52-1 record last season and his runnerup finish at State have his expectations through the roof. Cooper Andreassen was a State qualifier last season and posted a 39-13 record. He is looking to make a huge impact once again and place at State this season. Overall, EV has seven returning starters and they have a nice mix of experience and youth. Some of their young wrestlers will compete for varsity spots and push the returning starters to become better wrestlers. “Seven returning starters. This group brings state tournament experience and some youth as well. Zach is looking to finish his high school campaign on a high note with a state championship after placing the 3 previous seasons (2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively). Cooper had a great initial experience last year before elimination. I also have a nice group of freshman coming in to elevate the quality of wrestling in the room. I have 12 wrestlers that come to work every day and expect to get better. I look forward to the season and expect good things from everyone.” Coach Hester regarding his team’s outlook going into this season. These EV wrestlers are looking for big things this season, and with pretty high expectations, why not? Axmear and this group look to be a force this season in the SICL conference, and make improvements from last season.

With Coach Hester back at the helm for the first time since 200809, the expectations and excitement for EV wrestling is at a fever

pitch. Let’s hope the Bear’s are up for the challenge as a team, and make strides toward being a winning program this year.

Eagles boys basketball look to continue to fly high in 2016-2017 Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-16 Season: 17-7 Head Coach: Dan Stout The Keota Eagles welcome head coach Dan Stout back for his 15th season at the helm, as this team is hungry as ever for SICL dominance. This team will be led by a bevy of sophomores and juniors and some key seniors. The main ingredient for Keota is their long tradition of winning basketball. The Eagles had a good season last year making it all the way to the District Championship game before falling to Montezuma. The team’s goals this season is to win the conference this season, and first to win their division. Keota has some big time playmakers returning this season, and are expecting big things as they once again have incredible depth on their roster. Keota will be led by last season’s second-leading scorer Jacob

Wickenkamp, who as a junior averaged 11.5 points per game. Wickenkamp also led the team with 106 assists and accumulated 41 steals with his aggressive defense. Jacob looks to be the undisputed leader of this team and is chomping at the bit for his opportunity. Keota is also going to be led by Avery Conrad, who as a junior almost averaged a double double with 10.6 points per game and 8.5 boards. Conrad is a force to be reckoned with on the inside and also has a nice jump shot that makes him dangerous away from the basket as well. Hunter Wilson will be a name Keota fans will be hearing a lot this season as well. Wilson is deadly from the outside, and along with Wickenkamp, looks to light up the scoreboard with him impressive play. Wilson averaged 7.2 points per game as a sophomore adding 18 assists and 19 steals. Cole Stout, who averaged nearly

6 points a game last year, will also look to step into a bigger role offensively as he too has magnificent range and scoring ability. Luke Greiner will also look to take on a leadership role, as well as get more involved offensively for Keota. Greiner was a good defensive player last season and showed very good court-vision. The Eagles will also look to Turner Klein, JD Stout and Jack Eakins to be big contributors as well. Keota loves to push the tempo offensively, so teams preparing for the Eagles may want to bring a few track stars along, because this Eagles team once again is deep and can go nine or ten deep night in and night out. This depth allows them to do what they want offensively, and defensively they will look to be a solid perimeter defense team as well as be strong on the inside with Conrad and company. The Eagles are excited and raring to get 2016-17 underway.

Keota girls look to lay winning foundation for the future Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor

2015-16 Season: 1-21 Head Coach: Jeff Sprouse The Eagles struggled last season to say the least, and that is something that head coach Jeff Sprouse knows may continue some this season. When you only have nine total girls on your roster that is going to happen, but the Eagles have made it their goal to be extremely competitive this season and be a thorn in their opponent’s side all season. Keota returns three key contributors from last year’s squad in Addison Sprouse, Erin Chalupa and Raigan Sprouse. Addison is a very strong ball handler that led Keota in FT attempts and makes last season. Chalupa is their best defensive player, and guards the other team’s best player night in and night out. Raigan is Keota’s best three-point shooter and looks to remain deadly from behind the arc this season. Regarding his team’s depth an the opportunities that are in front of a lot of the younger players coach Sprouse had the following to say, “are Freshman and either of them could find time on the floor. It will depend on how they work & adjust to what we our trying to do. Our three sophomores’ will be asked to do a lot this year. They played a lot late in the season and will be a big part of the rotation.” Coach Sprouse knows Rome

Panther’s blend of experience and youth should make for interesting 2016-17 basketball season Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor

2015-16: 18-6 Head Coach: Ken Hutchinson The Pekin panthers boys basketball program has been well run for a long time now, and things aren’t about to change in that department. However, the

Panthers are faced with having to replace their top three scorers, all of whom averaged double-digit points. They will need to fill that enormous void left and fast. Pekin believes it has the players to fill that void, and they will look to their fourth leading scorer from a year ago, Ryan Millikin, first and foremost to step up and be a game

changer. Millikin averaged 8.4 points a game last year to go with his 47 assists and 44 steals. Ryan’s athletic ability and length make him a good defender and a solid scoring threat, especially without the mentioned departing seniors from last season’s squad. Joining Millikin as returning team leaders are Levi Long and Chase Eckley, both of whom are looking to make a huge impact on this year’s team. Both are very athletic and both can provide a lot of hustle plays that won’t necessarily show up on the stat sheet each night, but both are also stepping into roles that are new and may take some time to fit in. Pekin will also look to the likes of Caleb Comstock, Cameron Millikin, Jared Horras, the only other senior besides Ryan Millikin, and Chandler Eckley. These players are all outstanding athletes who can be major contributors this season for the Panthers. Replacing talent like the talent that Pekin lost last season will not be an easy task, but the Panthers have seemed to always answer the call and have consistently remained a competitive team through the years. The Panthers will look to their youth in order to really make strides toward a positive future and accomplish-

ing their team goals. Overall, this is shaping up to be a fun-filled

season with a bunch of great kids who really want to win.

High expectations for girls basketball once again at Pekin Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-16 Season: 24-2, L First round of State Tourney Head Coach: Davis Eidhal The Panthers had yet another successful season under head coach Davis Eidhal last season and are pumped for another great campaign. This year’s team lacks experience, but doesn’t lack depth. The Panthers hope to return to State and make a deeper run in 2017. Coach Eidhal is in his 13th season with Pekin’s girls basketball program, and his 53rd season overall as a coach. Given his experience the Panther’s have a leg-up on the competition already. They only return one starter, so they will have to fill several spots but are confident they have the girls to get it done. The Panther’s lone returning starter is Maci Gambell, who was one of their f loor leaders last year being named AllConference for her outstanding play. Gambell averaged 15.4 points a game last season as well as 5.5 rebounds. Kaylee Linder is the only other Panther with varsity experience from last season. She saw some playing time and even started a couple games. Linder will be the team’s point guard and will direct the offense. Some newcomers that can be difference makers this season for Pekin are Emilee Linder, Haley Gambell, Zoey Wright, Shea Dahlstrom and Faith Oostra. “The girls need to play together and get experience playing with one another. I think that we will have a good season once the girls get some game experience.” Said Coach Eidhal regarding his expectations for his team this season. The expectations are always high for Pekin, and deservingly so. Pekin has been a powerhouse in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, and show no signs of letting up this season.

won’t be the case this season as the expectations are much higher. Pekin returns nine varsity letters from a year ago, including Clayton Greiner who was their lone District placer last season. “With no seniors or freshmen this season what we’ll be looking for is who will be grabbing the reins and leading our team. We are looking to surprise some people with the maturity and aggressiveness, without any returners making it into the post season many teams won’t have us on their radar, at least at the beginning of the year.” Said coach Al Chapman about his Panther wrestler’s outlook this season. Some returning wrestler’s for Pekin are; Keaton Baayen, Drake Harbison, Kaden Baker, Ethan Cooksey, Isaiah Wittrock, Jordan Hixson and Clayton Greiner. They will also return sophomores Hunter Conger and Zach Hammes. They all have high goals for themselves as individuals and as a team. Elijah Sieren, Dustin Tschudy,

Conner Reed, Tanner Bainbridge, Hunter Lucas and Ted Criswell all also return this season and are looking to push for varsity spots. Chapman was a co-head coach with Sam Collora, but this season Pekin will move on without Collora. Pekin still is deep with their coaching staff as well as their players as assistants Aaron Deutsch and Aaron King will be helping Chapman get these wrestlers ready for a great season full

of opportunities. “Expectations are to become more aggressive and not give up on ourselves. The team would like to make it to regional duals as a goal.” Said coach Chapman about his team’s expectations this year. However things play out, as long as progress is made in the right direction all involved will be thrilled with the wrestling program as they look to get back into the thick of their conference race.

Sigourney boys look to make strides toward the future in 2016-2017 By: Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-2016 Results: (11-12) L to Keota Dist. Semi-Finals Head Coach: Mitch Eslick This basketball season will be a test that sixth year head coach Mitch Eslick and the Sigourney Savage varsity basketball program hasn’t had to face in quite some time. The Savages lost all their starters from a year ago, as well as losing two players who played quite a bit off the bench last season. Only two total players who dressed varsity a year ago are returning for Sigourney, meaning opportunities are plentiful for the many incoming and returning underclassmen. Sigourney may take some lumps along the way this year, but they have a chance to build a young team made up of mostly freshman and sophomores who can set a foundation for future success. As a whole Sigourney lacks size coming into the season, but all of these young men will fill out in the years to come, and will gain experience this season that can go a long way when building a competitive ball club. The Savages as mentioned do return some experience in senior Will Magill, who has dressed varsity the past two seasons. Magill is a tough defender, who has shown flashes of scoring ability in the past coming off the bench. Magill will be the lone senior for this team, and is expected by this coaching staff to be an excellent role model for this

Sigourney girls look to build off of their experience from last season Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-2016 Season: 14-10, L Regional Semi’s to eventual State Champion Springville Head Coach: Zach Tremmel, first season at Sigourney, 13th year overall as head coach The Savages will not be lacking in depth or returning experience this season to say the least. They return four starters from last season’s team as well as a majority of their contributors from the bench. “We obviously return a lot of experience and athleticism. We also return most of our bench, so we should have plenty of depth to play an up tempo style.” Said head coach Zach Tremmel regarding his team this season. The Savage returning starters are led by Leah Carter, who averaged 3.5 points with 14 assists, 28 steals, seven blocks and 50 rebounds on the year last season. Autum Barthelman was Sigourneys second leading scorer last season as a sophomore with 12 points per game. Barthelman also led the team in assists (94) and steals (107), she also hauled in 95 boards last year. Sigourney senior Anna Ohland who corralled 159 rebounds last season looks to be a presence once again for the Savages in the paint. Brooke Waechter is the fourth

Sigourney-Keota wrestling program looks to continue established success Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-16 Season: 25-6, Conf. Champs, 8th at State duals, 3 State qualifiers, one placing Head Coach: Craig Reeves 1st season as SK head coach, tenth season coaching overall The wrestling program at Sigourney-Keota has been a bright example for the rest of the SICL conference to follow over the years, as SK has continuously been a highly competitive program that has always cherished their rich wrestling tradition. Under first year Craig Reeves there appears to be no signs of things changing as SK is geared up for another shot at the SICL Conference championship, as well as making noise at State. Last season SK had three State qualifiers with all three returning this year. Nine wrestlers return this season for SK, including their State qualifiers Kaleb Reeves, who took seventh at State, Noah Boender and Luke House. “There are some good leaders in the room. They push each other to get better. We have a lot of experience in the room and they want to do

Trojans look for competitive edge this season as TC boys’ basketball blends mix of youth and experience Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor 2015-16 Season: 4-17, L First Rd. Districts to Cardinal Head Coach: Curtis Fisher, 3rd season at TC, 4th year overall Tri-County has had their fair share of lumps the past three season’s under head coach Curtis Fisher, but this season the boys basketball program appears to be in line for a competitive 2016-2017 campaign. The Trojans have four of their five starters from last year returning. Jacob Bombei is in his third year as

the starting point guard as he enters his senior season. He is the guy that does it all for TC and gets this team rolling with his dynamic play. He is a great leader on and off the court. Bombei averaged 10.5 PPG last year. Walter McKay is another senior for TC this year who returns as a starter. McKay has the ability to stretch the floor for a post player and can get up and down the floor quickly. TC is depending on him to be a tough defensive player as well. Lane Williams is yet another senior returning starter for TC. Lane has

the ability to hit the J from the perimeter and has great vision to see the open floor. Cameron Krumm is a junior returning starter. He led the Conference a year ago with 90 offensive rebounds. He is their next scoring option after Jacob Bombei. Krumm gets up and down the floor with his long body frame, and can disrupt teams defensively in transition. He also has the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting capabilities. Krumm has the ability to post up down low and do work on the inside. He is also being counted on as a defensive force for TC down low disrupting opponents shots. Cory Hughes is a junior with experience returning as well. Although Cory did not start a year ago he did start quite a few games when he was a freshman, so he has valuable experience. Cory can space the floor and can get hot from beyond the arc. “This offseason he became more aggressive and has now begun to drive and will be able to get more easier shots as well as creating open shots for his teammates with an excellent passing ability,” said Coach Fisher about Hughes. Bailey Davis is another senior with experience returning to TC this season. “Davis is a hustle player who can disrupt an offense with his sneaky ability to deflect passes. He is another guy who can run the floor and hit from beyond the arc.” Said Fisher about Bailey Davis. Dylan Seaton is a junior who also has some experience from last season. Dylan is a big guy who is always trying to

fight for position down low. “He has developed great moves in the post and will be one of the first guys off the bench for us this year,” said Fisher regarding Seaton. Sophomore Brandt Molyneux is a flex player, meaning he can play inside and out. He is fairly active on the offensive glass and is continuing to develop his post moves down low as well as his post defense. Sophomore Aydan Bos is a smaller wing player but he is not afraid to run the floor. He continues to develop a more aggressive attitude this season as he is getting used to high school basketball. He has a fairly solid shot overall. Coach Fisher was also very excited about the prospects of his incoming freshman class. He said the following regarding two in particular he is really excited about. “Brayden Monroe is a freshman newcomer. Brayden most likely will be our backup point guard this season because he seems to not be afraid of any challenge. He has the ability to penetrate the defense and find the open man. He also is not afraid to

guard the other team’s best player. Tegon Fogle is a freshman newcomer we are pumped about. Tegon is a post player who has decent strength for a freshman athlete and has tremendous speed.” Overall Fisher and his assistant coach Jeff Davis are expecting their team to be a double-digit victory team when this season is all said and done. Really the possibility for a 15-win season is not a stretch of the imagination for TC, as they do return a lot of athletes and talent. Experience is a huge factor for this team, and they hope that experience will pay dividends when this season is all said and done.

once again lead Tri-County on both ends of the floor. Lundy averaged 12.6 points last season, shooting over 44% from the field. Lundy also averaged 8 rebounds a game last season, and should be in line to average close to a double double this season. Katlyn Little, another senior, will be asked to step into a big role on this team this season. Junior Allison Steinke, who averaged four points a game last season, is the second highest returning scorer behind Lundy. Tri-County has to replace three of their top five scorers from last season, and there will be ample amount of opportunity for all the girls on the roster to compete for playing time. Kearstan Schmidt, a junior, was deadly from behind the arc last season leading the team in 3 point field goal percentage. She will look to step into a bigger role this season, as she will see much more chances to make an impact on the court. The Little’s will be a big factor this season, so will the Miover’s. Emma Miover, a freshman, will have a chance to step in at her young age and help add depth to this Trojan team. Hannah Miover is a junior who will see a lot more playing time this season and

should be a big help to this team. Overall the Trojans look to remain competitive and not be the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team that they were last season. Consistency and competitiveness will be huge

keys to this years Tri-County girls basketball team. If they can come together and play smart, sound basketball, then they should be close to matching last season’s win total, or eclipsing it.

Trojan wrestling moves forward without Montezuma Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor

Coach isn’t oblivious to the challenges his team will face this season, and after several very competitive seasons with a full team, they now have to try and manage with much fewer numbers. Coach Edmundson spoke about these challenges recently, “We will not have a lot of kids out. It will be impossible to compete in team races, but we will be able to compete in matches.

2015-16 Season: 9-13, 3rd in SICL Head Coach: Scott Edmundson Tri-County and Montezuma decided not to share a wrestling program this season as they have in the recent past, but that hasn’t deterred the few TC wrestlers who will be out this season. Although they only have three wrestlers at the moment, they have high expectations for the two returning wrestlers, and hope they can encourage more TC students to join the program. Noah McCammant and Clay Harper are TC’s two returning wrestlers, and freshman Jakeb Van Patten will also be wrestling as the team’s lone newcomer. Coach Edmundson remains optimistic despite the fact that TC will not be able to compete for team wins this season, but individually he is excited about the prospects of his two upperclassmen this season. “Our kids are going to
