Muffins for Moms Fremont Elementary hosted Muffins for Moms on Wednesday, November 16. The students made a special invitation to share with their Moms. The menu was blueberry and apple-cinnamon muffins, milk, coffee, and juice. It was a very busy morning for the ladies in the cafeteria, as they served around 130 people. We were very excited to see so many Moms out with their children and hope everyone enjoyed the morning.

Parents: Cold weather is officially here. Please pay attention to the forecast and be sure your student is dressed appropriately before leaving home. We strive to have the children go out for fresh air and exercise when the weather permits. As a general rule, recess will be outside unless the temperature + wind chill falls below 10 degrees. Winter coats, gloves, mittens, hats, and boots are essential cold weather wear. Snow pants are required to play in snow. To help make sure that your child's belongings return safely at the end of the day, remember to label each piece of clothing clearly. MORE MEANINGFUL INFORMATION Smarter Balanced consists of a digital year-end assessment customized to meet individual student needs and testing knowledge. When students get an answer right or wrong, the exams give more difficult or easier questions to further pinpoint student understanding. The Smarter Balanced Assessment system is geared to provide us with a more detailed picture of student learning by providing specific information on which skills students have mastered and where they need additional support.

Much like the EBF district, the state of Iowa has articulated a mission statement of preparing all students with the knowledge and skills they need for success beyond high school. In support of that vision, clear and consistent statewide standards were developed that outlined expectations of what students should know. Because we raised the bar for what is expected of students to know and do, we must now change the way we measure progress through state testing. The state of Iowa has identified and adopted a new statewide assessment protocol aimed at better measuring student ability THIS YEAR Iowa students will take the current Iowa Assessment and the Department and reflecting what is being taught in classrooms. of Education will prepare school districts for the implementation of new testing, using the Smarter Balanced Assessment during the 2017-2018 TIMELINE school year. FFA Food Drive The FFA is hosting a food drive for elementary, junior high, and high school students. Students can bring in non-perishable items, such as canned or packaged food, through December 16. All of the food will be used to support families in our communities. Deliveries will be made on December 17. Please help spread the joy of giving this holiday season!

The Agri- Power FFA Chapter collects goods to distribute around the surrounding area to those who are in need. Each year the Thrivant Lutheran purchases hams to give away in each of these baskets. We then include the hams into each basket along with a variety of different items and present them personally to those who have been nominated. If you or anybody you know would like to donate to the AgriPower Chapter, by bringing us food to the high school, it would be greatly appreciated. Any non-perishable items would be great, such as boxed pasta and cans. This has been an annual event for over 20 years and has always had a very successful outcome.

Clayton Mooney, EB Graduate, Working to End World Hunger

A 2005 Eddyville Blakesburg graduate, Clayton Mooney, has been recognized recently for receiving second place at a global competition. Clayton is also a 2012 English graduate from Iowa State University. The company receiving recognition began as an Iowa State student startup and has now taken second place at a global competition for sharing ideas that alleviate world hunger and food waste. KinoSol is the brainchild of a 2016 grad from ISU, and along with Mooney and two current ISU seniors has developed a solar-powered food dehydrator. This product was developed for fruits, vegetables, grain and insects; it can be used around the world to reduce food waste, which is one-third of all global food, currently, and also to increase nutrient availability. The group is working to raise funds for the product through a Kickstarter campaign to help with prototyping and developing a unit for the urban market. The mission of KinoSol is to end domestic and specifically consumer food waste.

Fremont School Fall Fitness Awards

~Submitted by Phys.Ed. Instructor, Kathleen Rempe

Once again, Presidential and National Physical Fitness testing has been completed at Fremont. All students in Fremont grades 3-6 participated in the President's Challenge. Testing is done twice a year, and we saw great improvement from last spring in the endurance run which is one mile for the 4th-6th graders, and 1/2 mile for the 3rd graders. Great job, kids!!! The Physical Fitness Test includes five activities that measure muscular strength/endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility: Sit-ups (core strength); Shuttle Run (speed and agility); Endurance Run/Walk (cardiovascular endurance); Right-Angle Pushups (upper body strength); Sit and Reach (Flexibility). Presidential Physical Fitness Award—To earn this award, students must score at or above the 85th percentile on all five activities. National Physical Fitness Award—Students earn this award for scoring above the 50th percentile on all five activities. Congratulations to all students that participated and strive to improve their fitness levels! Dental Screens

To complete State of Iowa required dental screenings, the local I-Smile Coordinator will be at our High School during the months of November and December. The Iowa legislature passed a law in 2008 requiring all students enrolled in 9th grade have a dental screening. The Registered Dental Hygienist provides screenings for students without a dental certificate on file. The dental screening is an examination of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth and will be completed with a flashlight, disposable mouth mirror, and gloves. An informational letter will be sent home with your student following the screening. If you do not want your student to receive a free dental screening from the I-Smile program, please contact the school nurse. If you have a dentist and your student has received an exam within the last year, please call your dentist and have them fax the State of Iowa approved Dental Screening certificate to the High School, if you have not already done so. Dental offices have access to this form.

For questions please contact Denise Janssen, RDH I-Smile Coordinator at 641-682-3224.

This partnership will allow for the drum corps to host winter camps and Spring training at the Former Vennard Campus in University Park/Oskaloosa. The campus is equipped with dormitories, rehearsal and dining hall, practice field with tower and lights and ample indoor space. This arrangement offers an opportunity for the instructional staff and members to properly prepare for our six-week tour within Drum Corps International’s Summer Music Games. While the corps will move winter and spring rehearsals to Iowa, we will continue to operate, fundraise and expand on community relations in Racine, Wisconsin. For the upcoming season, the administration anticipates 60-75 marching members for the 2017 season lead by the finest educators in the Midwest. Tentative Winter/Spring schedule: December 10-11 Open House (Full Corps); January 13-14 Camp (Brass and Percussion); February 4-5 Camp (Brass and Percussion); March 4-5 Camp (Brass and Percussion); April 8-9 (Brass and Percussion); May 13-14 (Full Corps); June 9 – Spring Training Students interested in membership in the 2017 Racine Scouts should visit RacineScouts.com to register for our upcoming Open House to receive audition materials and details on our first rehearsal of the 2017 season. Band Directors are encouraged to visit us during the Open House to explore options for your students with both the Racine Scouts or WPU. We continually strive to provide a quality experience for your students that will help boost the quality of school programs. Founded in 1927 as a Boy Scouts of America drum and bugle corps, the Racine Scouts hold the distinction of the oldest continuously active operating corps in the county. It is also recognized as the oldest musical scouting unit. Known over many years by the affectionate nickname “Chrome Domes,” after their distinctive mirrored helmets, the Racine Scouts have a storied tradition in drum corps competition. The group was recognized as the Most Improved Open Class Corps in 2014. In 1938, a group of Madison businessmen were inspired to start a local Boy Scout corps, and they asked for Racine’s help with staff, music, and support for their start-up of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. In 1947, they were seen by Scoutmaster Don Warren of Chicago’s Troop 111, who then decided to start the drum and bugle corps that would become known as the Cavaliers. Comments from WPU Athletic Bands Director, Terry DeJong: “I am very pleased to see this partnership develop with the Racine Scouts to benefit both of our programs. They’ve got such a long history, now 89 years old and it’s our privilege to help them with changes to continue their future and become part of our community and with us becoming part of their history. With this partnership, they will also offer great benefits to WPU with our Athletic Bands and further educational opportunities for our Music Ed majors to better prepare the students for running their own programs in the preparation, business and travel areas. With the corps’ student involvement and internship/scholarship opportunities, this adds another unique offering with our program that other universities in Iowa do not offer".

BINGO

The Rocket wrestling team held their annual Soup/Sandwich Supper and BINGO night fundraiser on November 18. Once again, it was standing room only as a cafeteria full of people ate a good dinner of various soups, chicken and noodles, pulled pork sandwiches, desserts and won some great prizes. Thank you to everyone who came out and played, donated food and prizes and helped work to support the wrestling team. Special thanks to Ed Glenn for being our awesome number-caller and keeping everyone on track all night. Also a special thank you to Martin and Heather Scharff who ran the food line, to Allison Angle who served as our prize patrol for the night, and Aaron Angle for smoking 80lbs of meat for the dinner. Congratulations to everyone who won prizes, especially to John McGrew who was the grand prize winner of $100 cash. - Coach Little (Photos courtesy of Coach Little)

!

Athletic Director Curt Johnston hopes to win.

7th grader Taylor Rea shows off her prize.

Ed Glenn calls Bingo numbers.

Rocket Wrestler Dalton Griffiths stands by one of the donated prizes ready to hand it out to a big winner.

John McGrew holds up his winning BINGO card and $100 cash that he won.

PlayDoh Winner - Eddyville PreSchooler Jace Nicholson

Wrestling Cheerleaders Ali Blommers and Faith Berryman figured out how hard it is to work while taking care of their newborn babies (a class project).

If your child is involved in other events outside of school, and you would like to have their accomplishments published, please email a statement and a photo as an attachment to rocketnewskathystreet@rocketsk12.org The Rocket would be a great place to show off their efforts and talents.

The next two submission deadlines for The Rocket are December 8 and 22.
