Blitzen Boogies at Keota Elementary Fine Arts Night Amie Van Patten Regional Editor Students put on a very entertaining holiday program on December 1. The fifth grade band started off the night with three performances. “We Will Rock You” had all of the students in the bleachers stomping their feet along with the band. The fourth grade class sang an arrangement of fun tunes with Landyn Greiner ending their
portion of the night with a slide across the f loor to the “Blitzen’s Boogie”. Kindergarten jingled their bells to the classic “Jingle Bells”, and second grade had the crowd giggling with “I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”. The sixth grade band returned to the stage to perform three pieces including “Last Dragon” by Grice. The fifth grade class started with two traditional pieces and then ended with a tune “Winter Won-
derland/ Here comes Santa Claus” as performed by Anna Kendrick and Snoop Dogg with a solo by Will Carlson. First grade came through with “Deck The Halls” and “Winter Wiggles” with the kids wiggling all around. Third grade had a missing Santa in the chimney played by Luke Moeller as they sang “There’s Someone in the Chimney”. Sixth grade had solos by Hannah Tandy and Jocelyn Purkeypile and du-
ets Annadell Tusing, Chloe Pringle, Aidan Anderson and Caden Sprouse as they sang “Hallelujah”. The night concluded with an encore by kindergarten through sixth grade performing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Mrs. Utterback led the Elementary chorus with the band being led by Mrs. Edwards. Mrs. Miller’s art class had a display to be seen before and after the performance with the PTO baskets on display as well.
Amie Van Patten Regional Editor Matthew Murphy is currently awaiting trial on sexual abuse against minors charges in Jefferson County. Murphy was originally planned to appear in court December 6 on sexual abuse charges and again in January. Due to Judge Wilson’s retirement, there have been scheduling issues in the 8th district, so the plan is to continue the Murphy trial along with others in Jefferson County. No formal action has been planned at this time in either case against him. Murphy was formerly employed by the Southern Iowa Area Crime Commission and was a Reserve Deputy for the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and the Defendants are presumed innocent until and if found guilty in a Court of Law.
Holidays in full spirit in Keota Amie Van Patten Regional Editor The Keota Community is getting into the holiday spirit from the trees placed throughout town to the banners and decorations lining the streets and houses covered with décor. This weekends Holiday Market, Tour of Homes and Speech soup supper was a perfect opportunity for friends, families and community members to gather and enjoy the friendship of each other as they joined to raise money for good causes.
The Hansen home had a sleigh and carriage offered on the tour. See more photos on page 3.

KCHC to provide mammography service on site By CJ Eilers News Editor The Keokuk County Health Center (KCHC) Board of Trustees met on Thursday, Dec. 1, where they discussed offering mammography services at the hospital in lieu of mobile services previously offered through Mercy Medical Center. Back in September, it was announced that Mercy out of Cedar Rapids would no longer be providing mammography screenings and other services in Keokuk County, along with other Iowa locations. Since then, KCHC has weighed options of finding a new service or providing these services themselves in the radiology department. The cost for new equipment necessary to host mammography screenings ranges from $139,000 to $260,000. An estimated 10 to 12 patients per month sought screenings through the Mercy mobile services according to KCHC CEO Matt Ives. The decision was placed on the Board to bring this service to KCHC. Consideration was made if this service would be profitable enough to maintain, and if enough people would seek screenings. The Board was presented a quote for screening equipment by Browns Medical Imaging for $190,000 and would have to have a decision made by the end of the year to secure that price. The motion to approve providing mammography services was approved unanimously. KCHC has hired Dr. Cheryl Quinn D.O. as a new provider for the Keokuk County Medical Clinic. Dr. Quinn will assist with the clinic’s inpatients services and provide supervision, as well as be the medical director for the Keota Nursing Home.

Eagle Advocates Fundraiser • Hypnotist John Greene
She has over 12 years experience, is a board certified Family Medicine Physician, and is expected to begin her position in early January. Ambulance Director Casey Thompson reported that the electrical wiring in the new ambulance garage is complete and the hope is to have a concrete approach in before winter weather hits hard. Work is being done to the piping and drainage systems in the specialty clinic, which has seen fewer patients in the last several months. Due to the lack of workload, getting this project along has proven easier. KCHC will need to replace their compressor in the near future. Thompson is looking into prices, estimating the work will cost around $15,000. For the Ambulance and Ancillary Services report, Thompson feels that they will hit 800 calls by the end of the year. Policy procedures are being put into place for the new Crown Vic the hospital acquired from the Sigourney Police Department. As mental health patients will be transported with the vehicle, Thompson is looking at what policies other hospital have in to place already. A weekend paramedic has been hired and will join three other hires this month for training at the hospital.

Keota girls fall at Lone Tree 41-14
Noah Reeves attempting to finish off EV’s John Fisher.
Sigourney-Keota punishes all comers at opening home Duals Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor SIGOURNEY- SK was victorious in all three of their duals on Thursday, Dec. 1 to open the wrestling season. Their opponents were EV, HLV and BGM, as SK outscored all three of them 198-38 on the night. SK won a lot of points due to forfeit as all three opponents had several open weights. EV was the closest dual of the night, although SK defeated the Bears 60.0 to 20.0. This was the matchup that saw the most opportunities for SK’s wrestlers to wrestle. At 106-lbs Mason Dye defeated Tanner Mihal in 0:59. At 120-lbs Seth Thompson of EV defeated Cale Jarmes 8-0 in a major decision. At 126 Cooper Andreassen of EV defeated Dayne Fisher by fall at 0:32. At 132 Nick Ives made quick work of Keaton Annis in 0:25 in the first period. Cian Borra won his first varsity match defeating Clayton Morrison at 152-lbs (Fall 3:42). Zach Axmear defeated Greg Gott at 160-lbs. Alec Schuster beat Caleb Peach (Fall
5:06) at 170-lbs. At 182-lbs Noah Reeves defeated John Fisher (Fall 5:43). Kaleb Reeves, Noah Boender and Cooper Greiner all didn’t get the chance to wrestle in the dual. Sigourney trounced BGM winning a majority of matches by forfeit, but also wrestling hard in the weight classes that BGM was able to field. Sigourney won the dual 78.0 to 0.0, the following is the results of the matches they were able to wrestle in: 285: Cooper Greiner (SIGO) over Nathan Smith (BGM) (Fall 0:34) 106: Mason Dye (SIGO) over Blake Mann (BGM) (Fall 1:54) 113: Cale Jarmes (SIGO) over Jacob Cline (BGM) (Fall 1:09) 126: Dayne Fisher (SIGO) over Ian Hawkins (BGM) (Fall 3:03) 132: Nick Ives (SIGO) over Jack Smith (BGM) (Fall 0:47) 138: Zech Boender (SIGO) over Jordan Kriegel (BGM) (Fall 0:25) 160: Alec Schuster (SIGO) over Ethan Hawkins (BGM) (Fall 0:50) 170: Nate Schuster (SIGO) over Dalton Alexander (BGM) (Fall 3:09). Sigourney defeated HLV 60.0 to 18.0 in another SK rout. The following are the submitted results: 106:
Mason Dye (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 113: Cale Jarmes (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 120: Double Forfeit 126: Dayne Fisher (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 132: Nick Ives (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 138: Caden Fontinel (HLV) over Zech Boender (SIGO) (Fall 2:00) 145: Trent Hendricks (SIGO) over Cody Frahm (HLV) (Fall 6:00) 152: Kyler Klesner (HLV) over Cian Borra (SIGO) (Fall 3:12) 160: Alec Schuster (SIGO) over Dakota Huber (HLV) (Fall 3:21) 170: Kenneth Kriegel (HLV) over Nate Schuster (SIGO) (Fall 2:40) 182: Noah Reeves (SIGO) over Derick Weiermann (HLV) (Fall 3:50) 195: Kaleb Reeves (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 220: Noah Boender (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) 285: Cooper Greiner (SIGO) over (HLV) (For.) A good night of wrestling from SK as they get off on the right foot. The expectations that they have for themselves are very high, and the results from their first meet of the year was a very good sign of the things to come for this years wrestling program.
23 Students Named to the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team
Iowa Corn proudly announces today the 23 Iowa college students who will make up the seventh Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team (CAT). Comprised of Iowa students pursuing degrees in agriculture, CAT will assist the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) in developing targeted programs to enhance the organizations’ relationships with individuals pursuing careers in agriculture production and allied indus-
tries. CAT achieves this by fostering the knowledge and skills of these future leaders and providing them the tools to advocate for Iowa Corn and other commodity organizations’ role in the success of Iowa agriculture. “Iowa corn farmers’ future depends our ability to offer relevant programming, advocacy and services to new professionals entering Iowa’s agricultural sector, “said Iowa Corn Promotion Board Director Larry Buss, a farmer from Logan who
chairs the committee overseeing the team. “We are excited to work with these 23 bright students on ways we can cultivate and promote our organization and the corn industry.” The team includes one representative from each state college and university, and five students from Iowa State University. In addition, two additional positions on the team are for students in non-ag disciplines at any accredited Iowa college or university. The 2016/2017 participants:

Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor LONE TREE- The Eagles played three very tough quarters against Lone Tree on Monday, Nov. 28. They played Lone Tree to a 21-13 deficit in quarters one, three and four, but quarter number two the game got away from the Eagles as Lone Tree ended the half on a 20-1 run. Keota’s leading scorer was Erin Chalupa with six points; she also added five rebounds, one assist and a steal. Addison Sprouse had four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night. Freshman Addison Swanson had two points and five rebounds, while Brianna Duwa had six rebounds in the game.
Keota struggled to score from the field shooting five for 23 in the game. They played very tough defense for a majority of this one, and played a lot better as a whole than they had last week against Highland. The Eagles will continue to build off of the small victories and do what they can to keep competing, just put a whole game together. They will also look to find ways to score points moving forward, finding out who their scorers will be this season. Overall this was a good learning experience for this inexperienced group of girls, and a solid performance for a good chunk of the game. Keota Lone Tree

Keota girls again have one quarter to blame for loss against Belle Plaine Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor KEOTA- The Eagles girls basketball squad once again played very tough for three-fourths of this game against Belle Plaine on Tuesday, Nov. 29, but fell when they were outscored big time coming out of the half similar to their loss to Lone Tree on Monday night. Keota was led in scoring by Raigan Sprouse who had 11 points on an impressive four of five shooting. Addison Sprouse added eight points. Erin Chalupa
had seven rebounds and Brianna Duwa had five for the Eagles. Keota trailed by a mere two points at the half, before BP came out with lights out shooting in the second half. The Eagles will continue to play hard and remain competitive as a team, they just don’t have the depth to be able to stay with these deeper rosters at the moment, but conditioning and game experience may help turn the tide on the Eagles young season. Keota boys lose home opener against Belle Plaine 54-73
Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor KEOTA- The Eagles had a tough go of things on Tuesday, Nov. 29 against Belle Plaine. The Plainsmen came out shooting lights out, and Keota fell behind early on. The Eagles were forced to play from behind for the majority of this game, although they were able to claw their way back within single digits several times, ultimately they were routed in the fourth quarter and put away by BP. It was another productive night for Hunter Wilson as he followed up his 29 point performance on Monday night with a 13 point effort, although his shooting was not at the level it was Monday going five for 13 from the field, including three for nine from behind the arc. Wickenkamp had an off night going one for seven from the field for three points; Jacob did have four assists on the night though. Avery Conrad had a much better night offensively as he put up 13 points on six of eight from the field. Conrad also grabbed nine rebounds falling one short of a double-double. Cole Stout had eight points but also had a rough time shooting on the night, and JD Stout added 12 big points off the bench. Jack Eakins added six boards and Luke Greiner added four points, a steal and three boards. Keota was 21 out of 59 shooting on the night, including a dismal six for 33 from the three. For the second night in a row their free throw shooting was less than par as they were six of 17 as a team. Coach Stout on his team’s performance against BP, “We just were inconsistent shooting the ball, I think the two games in two days got the better of us tonight.” Stout continued, “We need to play smarter, rebound better and just get after it more than we have. We were such a far cry from the night before when we played a tough Lone Tree team so close, the good news is we will see Belle Plaine again at their place, so that is something for our guys to look forward to.” There’s no need to push the panic button Eagles fans, as they have several games in a row over the next week and a half or so that could see them possibly 5-2 when this stretch is done, but you have to go out and play the games of course. The Eagles have a good mix of athletes with differing abilities and attributes, and the more they play together the more in sync they will start to become. Coach Stout also mentioned doing some mixing and matching with his starting lineup and rotation to ignite a spark. The problem with Keota this year will not be on the offensive end, even on nights like Tuesday when they shoot poorly they are still able to muster 50 plus points, but on the defensive end. Although that will change as well as they continue to play ball, and should improve on almost a nightly basis. Keota BP

Keota falls just shy of road upset at Lone Tree Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor LONE TREE- The Keota Eagles traveled to Lone Tree on Monday, Nov. 28 and almost pulled off a huge season-opening upset. They fell just short in a close game throughout against a Lone Tree team ranked as high as number two. The Eagles will definitely look to their performance at the line in such a close contest as a deciding factor. They were eight for 18 as a team from the line, and only falling short of Lone Tree by two points makes this one tough to stomach despite the Eagles excellent play. It really was one of those games that if just one thing goes a little different we could be talking about a Keota Eagles upset road vic-
tory, instead they fell 76-74. They had 14 assists on 26 made field goals in the game, however they accumulated 21 fouls as a team. They were out-rebounded by a much bigger team inside with Lone Tree. Hunter Wilson led the way for Keota with 29 points on ten of 16 from the field and seven for 12 from behind the arc. Wilson also had two rebounds and two assists. Jacob Wickenkamp dropped 24 points on nine of 20 shooting, including five for 13
from three. WickenKamp also had eight rebounds, nine assists, a steal and a block in what was the definition of a stat stuffing game for Jacob. Cole Stout was five of 13 with all his shots coming from deep. He had 15 points, two boards and two assists. Avery Conrad was held scoreless, but he did have ten rebounds. Luke Greiner and JD Stout added three points each in this one to round out the Eagles scoring. Wilson, Wickenkamp and Stout accounted for 68 of Keota’s
74 total points and were 24 out of 49 from the field. The rest of the team was two for 14. The glaring issue would be they need one more player to step into a scoring role, but for their first game, and against such a tough opponent, they did a fine job putting up points and running their offense. “ They (Lone Tree) are a very experienced team with some really talented players,” Said head coach Dan Stout regarding the Eagle’s opponent on Monday. “I am very happy with the way we played against Lone Tree as a whole.” As the season rolls along Keota will inevitably find several more scoring options and will figure out how to play together better. Wilson was very good in the opening week of the boys basketball season for Keota as he averaged well over 20 points and was big doing a lot of things on the court to help the Eagles. The week began on Monday when Keota played a tough Lone Tree squad, a top five team in 1A, and they played LT well falling by a mere two points 76-74. After a disappointing game as a team against Belle Plaine, Keota came back with a 41-point victory over Tri-County. Wilson was very good scoring 29, 13 and 25 points giving him 67 on the week. He shot 24 for 43 from the field, well over 50%, and was a blazing 15 for 27 from behind the arc, as he is shooting lights-out no matter where the shot is from thus far this year. Wilson also added ten rebounds, and three steals through the first three games. Keota and Wilson will look to reel off a couple wins in a row and build some momentum moving forward.
