Way back when
Long winter nights As stated in this space before, I dreamt of a career as a movie director. Despite having learned to call them films instead of movies, I never had the ambition to get a start in that direction. It was the art, not the business that interested me. The art still fascinates me, and Dawn and I watch a lot of movies. We get them through a Netflix DVD plan. The streaming plan is too limited in selection for a movie nut like me. Like any good enthusiast, I’d like to share some movies we’ve enjoyed so you folks can have something to do while escaping the cold weather. Two dimensional war makes more sense than the real thing, so I really enjoy a good war movie. And if it is a little deeper than good guy versus bad guy and death and destruction, Dawn and I can enjoy war together. “Winter in Wartime” (2008, R for language) is about a teenage boy in Holland who aids an RAF pilot shot down in WWII. Occupied Europe was a place where it was hard to tell collaborators from friends. One is safe during the occupation but vulnerable when the invaders are defeated. It is Dutch with English subtitles, so nineteen percent of high school graduates should skip this one. But if you can read, don’t let the subtitles deter you. Europeans naturally have a more nuanced view of war, and we should pay attention. When our son Karl was born, I called my dad and said we named him after The Marx Brothers. “Winter in Wartime” was as serious and thought provoking as this next one
The Alternative Fritz Groszkruger 4selfgovernment@gmail.com www.alternativebyfritz.com is hilarious. Diversity has become an end in itself, and this list won’t need to move on after this next movie. The Marx Brothers’ “A Night at the Opera” (1935) didn’t need a rating. The Marx Brothers didn’t need to compensate for a lack of imagination with foul language, sex, or violence. If you don’t laugh all the way through this one, the coroner is on his way. The country was a third of the way through FDR’s Great Depression and needed this medicine badly. Another great movie from the Depression era is “Tarzan and his Mate” (1934). This one is not rated. It is partially responsible for the advent of movie ratings, however. The violence is shocking, and the partial nudity is artful and beautiful. The violence part is where I would advise parents to be careful with young children. The technology is ancient and amazing for its day. The story is timeless and captivating. Sensitive university students and professors better steer clear. When I was a little kid, I lived within a good bike ride of Will Rogers State Park. We used to ride up there and watch the millionaires play polo. This next movie is “Judge Priest” (1934, not rated) who is played by Will Rogers. You better
see this one quick. The movie is extremely politically incorrect, full of cliches and reserved for those who have a sense of humor. The music is fantastic; the plot complex. The tendency of our society toward being easily offended has poisoned us with cultural handcuffs. Get together with a diverse group and set yourselves free. Dawn spends a lot of time bringing joy to nursing home residents, so this next one was particularly dear to us. Be warned, more subtitles. This is a Swedish movie with seven languages. “The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” (2015 R, some violence) is an adventure that is just fun. Allan doesn’t much like sitting in the nursing home, so he leaves. The staff brings in his cake with 100 candles and found him gone. There’s even some computer generated content for the younger set. I hope these films (see, I’ve become an elitist) help pass the cold nights a little faster as we head toward spring. Please comment on these columns through a letter to the editor or directly to me at 4selfgovernment@ gmail.com. Between columns I share other “diverse” content on my blog: www.alternativebyfritz.com
Mid-America Publishing purchases The Aurelia Star Mid-America Publishing Corporation is pleased to announce its purchase of The Aurelia Star and Marcell Publishing, LLC from Marci Brown, of Cherokee, effective December 14. The Star will be added to the Hampton-based corporations growing roster of 31 Iowa weekly newspapers and shoppers. Other nearby papers also owned by Mid-America include those in Holstein, Ida Grove, and Lake City. “We are excited to assume the ownership of The Aurelia Star,” said Mid-America Publishing’s President and CEO, Ryan Harvey. “We believe this fits naturally with our western Iowa properties and our company as a whole. Marci has done a phenomenal job at re-building the Star, and we are eager to carry her momentum forward.” Marci’s decision to sell the paper was ultimately related to her decision to retire. “We want to thank Marci for allowing Mid-America to continue the legacy of the Star,” Matt Grohe, Mid-America Publishing Corporation added. “We know she’s put her heart and soul into the paper, and we look forward to working with the local community to provide the most robust news product possible going forward.” Harvey will assume the duties and title of publisher of the newspaper, while the staff of the Courier and Advance will remain responsible for day to day operations in the interim. As part of its new ownership, Mid-America will be looking to add a part-time local writer and photographer to enhance coverage of local news and events. “We believe a local newspaper needs to have local content,” Grohe
said. “That’s why our mission going forward with the Aurelia Star is the same as with every paper we publish, and that is to use the paper to tell the stories of the local residents, report on local events, and provide strong coverage of local government at the city, county, and school district levels. We’ve been very happy with the product the staff in Ida Grove and Holstein has been able to produce since ownership changes there, and we fully expect to replicate our success there here in Aurelia by providing unique content, compelling photos and quality journalism for the folks in the region.” The publication will join Mid-America’s portfolio of weekly newspapers which aside from the Courier, Advance, and Ida County Reminder also include: The Calmar Courier; Postville Herald; The Outlook, in Monona; The Eldora Herald-Ledger and Hardin County Index, with an office in Eldora; The Leader, with offices in Garner and Britt; the Grundy Register, in Grundy Center; the Buffalo Center Tribune; the Parkersburg EclipseNews-Review; the Wright County Monitor, in Clarion and Dows; the Eagle Grove Eagle; The Pioneer Enterprise (Rockwell-Thornton), The Sheffield Press; The Hampton Chronicle; The Butler County Tribune-Journal (Allison); the Clarksville Star, The Ogden Reporter, and The Graphic-Advocate, with offices in Lake City and Rockwell City. The company also owns and operates newspapers in southeast Iowa, namely, The News-Review, in Sigourney, The Keota Eagle, Keota, and The Sun with offices in New Sharon and Fremont. The company
additionally produces two weekly political newspapers, the Conservative Chronicle and the Liberal Opinion Week, as well as several TMC shoppers, such as The Hampton Chronicle’s Bonus in Hampton, The Spectrum in Lake City-Rockwell City, The Leader’s Shopper News Review in Garner, The Reminder in Ida Grove, and the Wright County Reminder in Clarion; plus monthly shoppers such as The Dual County Leader in Eagle Grove and the Keokuk County Chief in Sigourney. Additionally, the company publishes north central Iowa’s only Latino-oriented newspaper, Viva Iowa!, which serves Franklin and Wright Counties. Mid-America also operates a custom printing division, Mid-America Business and Personal Printing, that offers individualized printing and publishing solutions such as banners, posters, postcards, direct mailing, mailing list management, letter head design, newsletter management and dozens of other marketing and promotional products, which it plans to make available locally in the Alta and Aurelia area. Mid-America Publishing Corporation is a closely held family run company owned primarily by the granddaughter of the founder, Willard D. Archie, Jeanette M. Grohe, and her husband Matt Grohe, who also serves as the company’s Chairman and corporate Vice President. The Grohe family has extensive ties to the Aurelia area, with the board secretary, Ronald Grohe, having grown up in Alta, Storm Lake and Hartley. Ron is also the brother-inlaw of Nona Grohe and uncle to Sue Grohe Roberts and Kelli Hirschman, Aurelia residents.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to be the next U.S. Ambassador to China. Trump made the announcement last Wednesday, citing the ties Branstad has developed with China as a trading partner during his time as governor. If confirmed as ambassador by the U.S. Senate, Branstad would give up his role as the longest serving governor in U.S. history. Branstad, a native of Leland, is currently serving his sixth term as Iowa Governor. He was first elected in 1982. “I love Iowa, and I love my country. For 22 years, I have been honored and privileged to serve the people of Iowa as their governor. My family and I will always be grateful to Iowans for trust-
ing me to lead and putting their faith in me to serve,” said Branstad. “ I believe that the respect and admiration built over a decades-old friendship between President Xi and I give me an opportunity to help the President-elect and serve Iowa, the United States and the world for the better.” Branstad’s departure will also have the historic effect of giving Iowa its first female governor, as Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds is set to take over for the remainder of Branstad’s term. Reynolds has served as Branstad’s lieutenant governor since 2011, and she previously served in the Iowa Senate. President-elect Trump won the state of Iowa in the November 8 general election, and Gov. Branstad’s son Eric ran Trump’s campaign in the state.

Referendum passes to reinstate Iowa Beef Checkoff The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today announced the passage of the referendum to reinstate the $.50 per head Iowa beef checkoff that was held November 30. The preliminary results show a positive vote of 56 percent to 44 percent in favor of reinstating the assessment. A simple majority was needed for passage. The Department has until December 30 to certify the referendum results. Collection of the checkoff will begin March 1, 2017.
The Iowa beef checkoff will be mandatory, but refunds will be available to interested producers. The federal beef checkoff of $1 per head remains in place and would not be affected by the Iowa vote. A petition to vote on the state beef checkoff was delivered to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship on September 2 by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. The petition contained over 500 signatures of cattle producers in the state of Iowa
who are interested in a referendum. For information about the beef checkoff and beef checkoff programs, contact the Iowa Beef Industry Council at 515-296-2305 or email beef@iabeef.org. In accordance with Chapter 181 of the Iowa Code, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is responsible for holding beef checkoff referendum votes. All costs incurred by the Department will be reimbursed by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

By Cammi Anderson Activity Director Well, it’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at TMNH. Monica was still busy on Saturday decorating trees. Monica, Kim and I will be finishing up with the rest of the decorations throughout the week so we are ready for our Holiday Open House on the 15th from 2-4 p.m. Over the weekend, we played ring toss and horseshoes. We also had Short Stories, and we reminisced about our Christmas traditions. We watched and listened to “Band Wagon”, First Reformed Church, Peace & Power and “Lawrence Welk”. Monday, we exercised to Christmas music. At 9:30 a.m., we had Resident Council, in which we decided on what we would like for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners and our Christmas party. Boy, am I hungry now! During our Sunshine group, we watched “The Lawrence Welk Christmas Reunion”. For the afternoon, we had Short Stories from The Good Old Days, played ping-pong and had a balloon toss. Tuesday, we exercised to Country Dance Party. After exercise, we played croquet and frisbee golf. Unfortunately, Jeff Buege is still under the weather, so we had a Christmas sing along instead. The game of the day was The Dice Game. Wednesday, our first group exercised to White Christmas, and our second group listened to Oldies but Goodies. At 9:30 a.m., we had Nifty Nails, then we played basketball. During our Sunshine group, we gave hand massages. For the rest of the day, we had Let’s Reminisce, played Juca, Monica read the Buffalo Center Tribune and I ended the day with Pick a Tune.

Mary Thorland passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Deerfield Residential Living in Urbandale, from complications related to her more than ten year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Graveside services were held for family at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held in Thompson on June 10, 2017. Mary Lavonne (Doyle) Thorland was born at the family home in Fort Dodge on June 23, 1924 to Helen (Linn) and Richard (Claire) Doyle. She was the oldest of seven children. She graduated from Dayton (Iowa) High School in 1942. Her senior year of high school, her parents and siblings all moved to Thompson. While finishing her senior year in high school, Mary stayed in Dayton and helped care for the daughter of the woman she boarded with. Upon graduation from high school, Mary moved to join her family in Thompson. She worked as a waitress at a café in Thompson between 1942 and 1943. From 1943-1944, she worked as a hired girl. Her intent in working was to save enough money so she could put herself through teaching school. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Estherville in 1944. She taught in a one room school house from 1944-1947 in Linden Township, south of Thompson. She was married to Daniel Thorland on December 26, 1944 at the Bethany Lutheran Church parsonage in Thompson. They had four children: Jacqueline, Larry, Vicky and Cynthia. Besides raising her children, Mary was very involved in Bethany Lutheran Church with circle, teaching Sunday and Bible school and any other volunteer needs at the church. She was a volunteer 4-H leader. She was an avid knitter, seamstress, quilter, bridge player and gardener. She loved nature and especially enjoyed watching birds. She and Daniel (one of eleven children) had 50 or so nieces and nephews. Family was extremely important to both of them, and they made every effort to attend baptisms, confirmations, graduations and weddings of all those family members, often times driving long distances to do so. Mary continued to live on the farm outside of Thompson for one year after Daniel passed away before moving to Deerfield in Urbandale to be closer to her two daughters, Vicky and Cynthia. She is survived by: her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Vicky Thorland-Oster and her children Nathaniel and his wife Sasha and their son Gray and daughter Audie of Chandler, AZ and Jessica of Des Moines; Cynthia Thorland and her husband Fritz Weitz of Des Moines; Jacque’s husband Richard Rabb of Omaha, NE and their children Carla Bukalski and her husband Mark and their daughter Jackie and son Alex of Oak Park, IL, Daniel Rabb and his wife Laura and their daughter Karen Grace of San Jose, CA. She is also survived by: one sister, Charlotte Jean Hamlin of Zimmerman, MN and one brother, Richard Doyle and his wife Cindy of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by: her husband Daniel; daughter Jacqueline; son Larry; and four siblings, Dorothy, Phyllis, Clarice and Bill. Donations may be made to the following organizations: The Alzheimer’s Association, Friends Winnebago County Conservation Foundation or the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Oakcrest Funeral Services assisted the family with arrangements. www. oakcrestfuneralservices.com

The Hour of Code features activities kids can do with themes like Minecraft, Star Wars and Disney’s Frozen, and students don’t need any prior experience with coding. The goal is to inspire students to learn more about computer science. Mrs. Arin Anderson helped to organize the local event at North Iowa.

Crispy Bacon Twists with Gouda and Apricot Preserves Cook time: 45 minutes | Serves: 15
Nonstick spray Flour, for dusting 1 package (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry dough, thawed 1 egg, beaten 1 cup (12 ounces) apricot preserves 2 cups (about 7 ounces) Gouda cheese, shredded 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves 2 pounds (about 25-30 slices) bacon Heat oven to 375 F. Line two rimmed baking pans with foil, set baking racks in pans and lightly spray racks with nonstick spray. On lightly floured surface, roll out one puff pastry sheet to roughly 8-by-12 inches. Grab one strip of prepared dough by ends and place one end of dough strip horizontally at top end of bacon and roll bacon with dough downward, stretching dough strip while rolling. Place spiral-wrapped bacon twist on prepared rack and repeat. Bake twists 35-45 minutes, or until pastry is browned and bacon crisp, rotating pans as needed for even cooking. Let cool 5 minutes and gently use spatula to remove twists from racks. Serve warm or at room temperature. Tip: For a different flavor, try smoked or aged Gouda or fresh thyme instead of rosemary.

Bowlers extend win streak over Waukon The North Iowa High School bowling teams are now 3-0 for the season, after defeating Waukon last Friday, Dec. 9 in their first home meet at Buffalo Lanes. The boys topped Waukon 2,495 to 1,932, as Spencer Armstrong led with the high game and series. He had games of 205 and 184 for a 389 series, followed by Logan Prescott with a 373 series. Other scores included Logan Leesch 303, Ben Hassebroek 269, William Roeder 251 and Charlie Wycoff 225. The girls’ team led 2,119 to 1,912 in their win last Friday. Jordan Ostrander had the high game with a 196, while Sydney Giesking had the high series with a 372. Jenna Berschman had the second highest series with a score of 338, followed by Ostrander 325, Alexa Vrieze 225,
Chelsey Armstrong 188 and Nicole Kirschbaum 173. North Iowa Head Coach Doug Aukes notes that this is Waukon’s first year of fielding a bowling team. “Their team had good sportsmanship and showed a lot of character on and off the lanes,” said Aukes. While three wins in a row is a nice start to the season, Aukes says there are still areas to improve. “We need to focus just as much on the second game as we do the first,” said Coach Aukes. “Our scores tend to drop off in the second game, and really that is when they should be higher, as we understand the ball movement and lane conditions.” The bowling teams have one last meet before the holiday break this Friday, Dec. 16 at Tripoli against Denver.

Four members of the North Iowa Bison football team have received All-District honors for the 2016 season, while another has earned Academic All-District honors. Senior Spencer Armstrong was named to the First Team All-District. As quarterback, he led the district in both rushing and passing yards this seas. He threw for 576 yards in district play, and he went 31/80 in passing with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had 141 rushing attempts for 946 yards and 17 touchdowns. On defense, he had 55 tackles in district play, including 31 solo tackles and 24 assists. Bison Head Coach Graig Eichenberger says Armstrong is a talented player, and he will be missed. Senior Colin Weaver was named to the Second Team All-District. He was the Bison’s best offensive and defensive lineman, and Eichenberger says he was also the team’s hardest worker. “Colin is a testament to what a person can do if they put in the time and do things the right way,” said Eichenberger. “He came a long way from a gangly freshman to a stout senior who was able to hold his own versus very good offensive and defensive linemen in our district every week. Colin was our best pulling guard and was routinely asked to play our strong side defensive end.” Weaver had 36 total district tackles, including 22 solo tackles and 14 assists. Senior Austin Haisman was also named to the Second Team All-District. He made 25 receptions in district games for a total of 480 yards and seven touchdowns. He led the district in receiving yards, and he led his team in solo tackles during district play. He totaled 43 tackles, with 32 solo and 11 assists. He also made four interceptions, and he had 26 punts for 807 yards. “His average would have been better, but we ask our punters to angle their punts out of bounds,” said Coach Eichenberg-

Thomas Blodgett was named to the First Team Academic All-District for the 2016 football season. er. “Austin was a good kid to have in practice and was also a kid that came a long way from his freshman year. I’ll miss his bad jokes and the big play ability he had in the passing game.” Senior Noah Paulson is an AllDistrict Honorable Mention this year. He had 70 carries for 184 yards in district play. He also made four catches for 71 yards and one touchdown. He played middle linebacker
for the Bison on defense. “After our tailback went down week one, Noah moved from the wing position to the tailback position. He did some really good things for us. I do feel that he’s a better wing than he is tailback, but when you are a small team and someone goes down, you have to adjust. I was glad that he was willing to do that for us,” said Eichenberger. Junior Thomas Blodgett was named to the First Team Academic All-District this season, which requires a grade point average of 3.5 or above. “He started every game at center and along the defensive line,” said Coach Eichenberger. “Thomas just goes to show you that; you can be out for football, lifts weights in the morning, be in the fall play and be in a number of activities, all while taking a full course load of higher level classes and still be able to maintain your grades. I’m very proud of Thomas and what he is able to do. I wish I could say I had more people on the first or second team Academic All-District, but that is something we’re working on.”

Two losses for the Bison in week two The North Iowa boys suffered a pair of defeats on the basketball court last week, as they faced off against Rockford at home and Forest City on the road. In Tuesday’s game against Rockford, the Bison lost 63-40 to the Warriors. “We did not get out of the gate fast, and at the end of the quarter we found ourselves down 22-11,” said Bison Head Coach Chad Hinders. “The second quarter was our best of the game, and with less than 30 seconds to go until half, we had a chance to pull within two. That didn’t work out, and the Warriors sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to go up six. That seemed to deflate us, and we never did get our offense on track the rest of the game – only scoring 11 points in the second half.” Austin Haisman led the Bison in scoring with 12 points, followed by Isaiah Walk with eight and Jordan Boekelman and Drew Jensen with six each. Taylor Baumann attempts a shot as the Bison hosted Rockford last Tuesday. The Bison had a tough time at Forest City last Friday, where they were only able to score single digits in each quarter on their way to a 60-27 loss. “Once again, we were done in by their press,” said Coach Hinders. “We did not handle it well, and it resulted in easy baskets for them. They also did a nice job of driving to the basket and getting fouled, where they made 18 free throws on the night. When we did get it across half court, we were

Damon Olson led the squad in scoring with nine points, while Taylor Bauman and Nick Sabin contributed four points each. “The players did a nice job of working together and playing until the very end. Rockford did a nice job of sticking around to the last whistle, and the Bison did a nice job of finishing the game strong to get the victory,” said Coach Justin Ullmann. The boys traveled to Forest City on Friday, Dec. 9 and escaped with an exciting victory over the Indians, 30-26. Olson led the Bison in scoring once again with 10 points, while Bauman added seven. Cedric Frerichs hit a couple key free throws with seconds left to seal the win for the Bison. “It was a fun game that tested our players in critical situations. I was proud of all the players for working together,” said Coach Ullmann. The JV boys are now 2-2 for the season.

Ladies fall to Rockford and Forest City The North Iowa Lady Bison lost both of their basketball matches last week, beginning with a 57-39 loss to the undefeated Rockford Warriors last Tuesday in Buffalo Center. Rockford shot out to a double digit lead in the first quarter and led by 20 points at halftime. The Lady Bison fought back in the second half, where they led by two points, but they couldn’t make up the large deficit. Lady Bison Head Coach Matt Harriman notes that the Warriors are a ranked team and a very good opponent. “They execute things very well and are led by one of the best players in Emma Staudt,” said Harriman. “I was very happy with the second half, in which we won, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half – and against good teams, it makes it even tougher to win games.” Katelin Adams led the Lady Bison in scoring for the evening with 14 points, followed by Kendall Melz with nine. Missing 1-2 hours of sleep doubles crash risk Drivers who miss between one to two hours of the recommended seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour period nearly double their risk for a crash, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 35 percent of U.S. drivers sleep less than the recommended seven hours daily. With drowsy driving involved in more than one in five fatal crashes on U.S. roadways each year, AAA warns drivers that getting less than seven hours of sleep may have deadly consequences. “You cannot miss sleep and still expect to be able to safely function behind the wheel,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safe-

ty. “Our new research shows that a driver who has slept for less than five hours has a crash risk comparable to someone driving drunk.” The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s report, Acute Sleep Deprivation and Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash Involvement, reveals that drivers missing 2-3 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period more than quadrupled their risk of a crash compared to drivers getting the recommended seven hours of sleep. This is the same crash risk the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration associates with driving over the legal limit for alcohol. The AAA Foundation report found that in a 24-hour period, crash risk for sleep-deprived drivers increased
steadily when compared to drivers who slept the recommended seven hours or more: • Six to seven hours of sleep: 1.3 times the crash risk • Five to six hours of sleep: 1.9 times the crash risk • Four to five hours of sleep: 4.3 times the crash risk • Less than four hours of sleep: 11.5 times the crash risk While 97 percent of drivers told the AAA Foundation they view drowsy driving as a completely unacceptable behavior that is a serious threat to their safety, nearly one in three admit that at least once in the past month they drove when they were so tired they had a hard time keeping their eyes open.
“Managing a healthy work-life balance can be difficult, and far too often we sacrifice our sleep as a result,” said Amy Stracke, managing director of Traffic Safety at AAA. “Failing to maintain a healthy sleep schedule could mean putting yourself or others on the road at risk.” Symptoms of drowsy driving can include having trouble keeping eyes open, drifting from lanes or not remembering the last few miles driven. However, more than half of drivers involved in fatigue-related crashes experienced no symptoms before falling asleep behind the wheel. AAA urges drivers to not rely on their bodies to provide warning signs of fatigue and should instead prioritize getting plenty of sleep
(at least seven hours) in their daily schedules. For longer trips, drivers should also: • Travel at times when normally awake • Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles • Avoid heavy foods • Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving • Avoid medications that cause drowsiness or other impairment The AAA Foundation report is based on the analysis of a representative sample of 7,234 drivers involved in 4,571 crashes. All data is from the NHTSA’s National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, which comprised a representative sample of police-reported crashes that in-
volved at least one vehicle that was towed from the scene and resulted in emergency medical services being dispatched to the scene.
Send letters to Santa early this year Every year, millions of children write letters to Santa. When Santa can’t get to everything on a kid’s wish list, he sometimes forwards requests to helpers at the U.S Post Office through its Operation Santa program. In 2013, just 17 post offices across the country took part in Operation Santa. One of the receiving areas for these letters is the Des Moines Post Office located on 2nd Avenue. The stacks of mail that arrive for Santa come from children across the nation. “This is an important, long standing tradition that we are so proud to carry on,” said Patricia Kuhns Howell, post office volunteer and Santa
letter coordinator. “The amount of letters has been decreasing in recent years – just 600 were received last year - and we want children and their parents to know that if they write to Santa, they will receive a response.” The Postal Service began receiving letters addressed to Santa Claus more than 100 years ago. In 1912, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock authorized local postmasters to let employees and citizens respond to these letters. That program later became known as Operation Santa. Today, a dedicated group of Santa’s helpers at the Des Moines Post Office are carrying on the tradition of responding to each child’s letter.
“Many letters we receive peek into the struggles of families just trying to keep their heads above water. Yet, many of those still ask for simple things and for gifts for people other than themselves,” said Kuhns Howell. “We hope people will remember that although there are a lot of ways to connect with Santa, nothing can replace the impact of a personalized, hand written letter.” Children who want to send a letter to Santa this year should keep these tips in mind: 1. You don’t need a postage stamp to send a Santa letter. Children or parents can simply address their letter to the attention of one of the
following: Santa Claus or The North Pole, c/o Des Moines, IA Post Office, 1165 2nd Avenue. Drop the letter in the nearest mailbox or at your local post office. 2. If you want a response, provide your address. Each year, Santa’s helpers are unable to respond to hundreds of letters because there is no address. Children should provide their first name (last name is not required) and complete address including the city, state and zip code. 3. Don’t send money or candy. Santa won’t need money or candy, and bulky items could damage the post office machines and are messy if they get crushed.

Eligible students may apply for more than one scholarship, however, only one scholarship per individual will be awarded per academic year. “We are extremely excited about our growing scholarship program and the additional resources that will be available for Iowa 4-H’ers entering or continuing college next fall,” says Albert Grunenwald, Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “These donor-funded scholarships will help recipients build on their Iowa 4-H experiences and keep them on a path to future success.” Since 1949, donors to the Iowa 4-H Foundation have provided financial resources to fund quality 4-H expe-
riences and recognition opportunities for Iowa youth. To further explore establishing a scholarship with the Iowa 4-H Foundation, contact Mary Clancy, Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarship Coordinator at clancy@iastate.edu or 712830-1321.
