SCC girls return three starters in 2016-17 By Doug Dornath Coming off another successful campaign a season ago, the 2016-17 South Central Calhoun Titans girls varsity basketball team has high hopes once again this winter. The Titans return three of the squad’s starters from a season ago including senior Allison Birks, junior Hannah Seil and sophomore Maddie Jones. The Titans are in their seventh season as South Central Calhoun under the direction of coach Dave Birks, who has a 101-39 record as the Titans head coach and a career overall record of 501-217 in 33 seasons as a head varsity girls basketball coach. Last season, the Titans were 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference. SCC was second in the Twin Lakes Conference last year at 8-2 while Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon was the conference champions. “We expect to compete in every game,” said coach Birks of the 2016-17 season. “We will need to find additional scorers. Our goals are always the same — 1. State Tournament, and 2. Conference Championship.” Coach Birks listed the keys to having a successful season for the Titans this winter are expecting returning starters Maddie Jones, Allison Birks and Hannah Seil to have great seasons and the team being able to play up-tempo with good athletes on the squad. He said the strengths of the team are having a strong returning nucleus, having a strong tradition and having good leadership. He said the role players will need to raise their level of play and depth could be a concern for the squad this season. Returning all-conference players from the Titans a season ago are second-team all-conference honorees Allison Birks and Maddie Jones. Senior Allison Birks aver-

aged 12.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while Jones, a sophomore this season, averaged 11 points, 4.8 assists per outing and 4.5 rebounds per game. Seil, a junior and the Titans other returning starter, finished with 3.0 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per outing. Also returning as letterwinners are senior Myk Schoop and sophomore Heidi Hammen. Coach Birks listed seniors Abby Clark, Emily Henkenius and Kelsi Carlson, junior Jessica Hicks, sophomore Anna McChesney and freshman Emma McKinney as some of the top prospects on this year’s team. Other top returning players from the Twin Lakes Conference who were on the all-conference team in 2015-16 include first-teamers seniors Elle Ruffridge, Faith Meyer and Grace Meyer of Pocahontas Area/ Laurens-Marathon, senior Cloie Herzberg of Manson Northwest Webster and senior Erin Gerke of Newell-Fonda; second-team all-conference senior Payton Hjerleid of PAC/L-M and junior Dani Boettcher of Sioux Central; and third-team all-conference returnees senior Rebecca Krueger of Manson Northwest Webster and junior Lily Peterson of Alta-Aurelia. Coach Birks expects PAC/L-M to be the dominant team in the 2016-17 Twin Lakes Conference race while Newell-Fonda, Manson Northwest Webster and South Central Calhoun will compete for the conference title as well. SCC’s first conference game will be against East Sac County Dec. 2 in Rockwell City. Other conference contests include the following opponents, dates and locations: Graettinger-Terrill/Ruthven-Ayershire at Lake City Dec. 9, St. Mary’s at Rockwell City Jan. 6, at Alta versus Alta-Aurelia Jan. 13, at Pocahontas against PAC/L-M Jan. 17, Sioux Central at Rockwell City Jan. 20, West Bend-Mallard at Rockwell City Jan.

Titan wrestlers hope to reclaim TLC crown By Doug Dornath South Central Calhoun’s wrestling team wants to get back on top in the Twin Lakes Conference in 2016-17. Last year was a rare occasion where the Titans were not the conference champions. Also last season, the Titans squad saw its lengthy 38 straight conference dual win streak snapped. In 2016-17, SCC wants to reclaim its rightful spot at the top of the TLC, start a new conference dual win streak and qualify for the State Dual Tournament in February along with qualifying as many individuals for the Traditional State Tournament as well. “We look again to build off the successes we had last season — 26 dual wins, a state team ranking (highest was seventh in Class 1A), several tournament titles, etc.,” said SCC head coach Lance Schultz in his 24th season overall as a head coach and 20th in the SCC school district. “We do still have a bad taste in our mouth’s losing the conference title, something we’ve held five out of the last seven years and 17 out of the last 24 years. We have three individuals with district experience and two with state experience along with seven others who have either won a tournament or were in the finals, who all look to improve.” Among the top returnees this winter include a pair of state qualifiers in junior Brody Goodman and sophomore Chase McAlister. Goodman finished 46-12 a season ago and was a state qualifier at 152 pounds while McAlister finished 47-11 and earned a trip to state at 132 pounds. Others returning who have earned varsity letters for SCC include seniors Ashten Halvorsen, Cody Schumacher, Keaton Hammen, Cody Smith and Ben Wozniak along with junior Tanner Fistler and soph-

omores Michael Lyons, Keagan King, Mason Merkley and Kody Kutz. Halvorsen was 39-15 with 15 pins a season ago wrestling at the 160 to 170 pound range. He had 64 career wins with 26 pins. Schumacher, who wrestles at the 195-220 pound weight class range, missed the 201516 campaign but was 42-8 in 2014-15 with 30 pins and had a career total of 61 wins with 39 pins. Hammen was 25-24 at heavyweight last season with seven pins and hold 42 career wins with 11 pins in his high school career. Fistler also missed last season but was 1628 in 2014-15 with 11 pins. Lyons finished 34-21 in his freshman campaign at the 120 to 126 pound range while Keagan King was 23-29 with three pins as a freshman. Merkley finished 17-11 with seven pins and Kutz had a 3-3 overall record a season ago. “Our numbers are down a bit but the competition for a varsity spot should remain tough week in and week out, this will help us improve as the season progresses,” added Schultz. “Many of our wrestlers have been in this program for over 10 years now and have had great success through our little kids program and at AAU state tournament. Our programs tradition pushes us to stay on top the Twin Lakes Conference, we have a 70-10 conference dual meet record over our 11 years together (a 38-straight conference dual win streak ended last year), and a 300-73 overall dual meet record in the same time frame.” Schultz listed the following goals for the Titans to be successful once again in 201617: improve in every practice and every meet so the team can peak at sectional time; have a winning dual meet season; compete for the team title in every tournament they compete in; get back on top of the Twin Lakes Conference; and qualify for regional

Stewart Memorial Community Hospital 1301 W. Main St. Lake City (712) 464-3171 www.stewartmemorial.org

Cell 712-830-9038

and state duals. “Our seniors will be our major key,” said Schultz. “Their leadership with what they say and do will take us as far as they want this team to go (the seniors have a threeyear overall dual meet record of 90-14 along with a 34-2 conference dual meet record). Staying healthy will also be our key, our depth may be depleted a bit in the lower weight. Our younger wrestlers will need to mature quickly for us to be successful. “The Twin Lakes Conference continues to show the rest of the state how much damage it can do at State year after year,” said Schultz. “I don’t see this trend changing as we have some great individuals in this conference. With that being said, we need to be prepared for each and every conference dual if we want to finish on top. PAC/L-M should be strong again and GT/RA will also figure somewhere in there, Alta-Aurelia will be much improved as will Southeast Valley.” Schultz surpassed the 400 dual win mark last season and currently boasts a 410-1371 dual win career coaching record heading into the upcoming season. He is assisted by Kelly Goodman, Layth Peed, Jason Pochinski and Collin Corey.

Home dates on the Titans calendar in 2016-17 include a quadrangular meet with East Sac County, Ridge View and Humboldt in Rockwell City Dec. 6, a triangular outing with Manson Northwest Webster and Emmetsburg in Rockwell City Jan. 10, a triangular with Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center and Greene County in Rockwell City Jan. 17 and the annual South Central Calhoun Dual Tournament in Rockwell City Jan. 28.
