Board of Education accepts resignation of long-time secretary Clara Lensing SHARON DRAHN HERALD EDITOR

The Postville Board of Education, meeting in regular session December 12, was called to order by Vice President Brad Rekow in the absence of President Jamie Smith. The resignation and impending retirement of Board Secretary Clara Lensing was accepted with thanks and regret. Lensing, whose retirement is effective July 31, has been employed by the Postville Community School District for 47 years. The resignation of Wendy Larson, paraprofessional, was also accepted with thanks. Kely Toj a high school associate also resigned. Jasmine Stocker was hired at $10 per hour to work in the after school program and Hodan Farah was hired as a Head Start special education paraprofessional. Her hourly wage was set at $11.35. The early graduation requests of Samantha Lopez and Marissa Nunez were approved as they have completed the requirements set out by the Board of Education. The will graduate at the end of the current semester. A motion to approve applying to the School Budget Review Committee for a modiﬁed supplemental amount for the

The second annual Northeast Iowa YMCA Festival of Trees was held last Friday evening and Saturday morning. In spite of the frigid and snowy weather, many hearty souls had fun viewing over 25 trees, bidding on the silent auction items and visiting with jolly old St. Nick. Over $2,600 was raised which will be used to help purchase new equipment. The winning tree, as voted on by those attending the event, featured the ﬁrst grade students at Cora B. Darling School. First grade teachers are Jenna Brincks, Lisa Acevedo, and Jenny Harman.

2017-18 At Risk/Dropout Prevention Program in the amount of $22,025 was passed unanimously. It was explained that the money will fund at-risk/ dropout programs. The funding comes from local property taxes and a small portion of state aid. The purchase of a new school bus from the Thomas Bus Sales company was approved at a cost of $85,385. The 77 passenger bus is a 2017 model. Jenny Fangman, who teaches Preschool at Postville Childcare, is also under contract with the district to teach students with Individual Education Plans (IEP) As the Head Start recently added two IEPs and the preschool added one IEP., Fangman was moved from .25 to .50 for her work with the special education students within the district. The increase will be effective at the beginning of the second semester. Elementary principal Ryan Zurbriggen reported on the Elementary Winter Concert. He thanked band director Shauna Johnsen and vocal director Stephanie Vagts for their hard work. Jennifer Schutte, curriculum director, reported on differential accountability, expectations by common areas and the next generation science standards.

New digital radiology equipment upgrade for X-ray The Veterans Memorial Hospital Radiology Department has announced they have completed an upgrade to a new, fully digital radiography system which included a complete equipment upgrade and remodel of the radiology rooms. One of the new machines that has recently been installed is a digital radiography room. Now when an X-ray exposure is taken, the image comes up instantly on the computer monitor, just like a digital camera at home. Previously, the image would be exposed onto a cassette, and run through a reader, which took about 90 seconds. The advantage of this new system is to be able to get patients done with their radiography exams quickly so they can get results faster. The new digital system not only allows for quicker exam time, but also reduces radiation dose to the patient. Another addition to the department is a new digital ﬂuoroscopy room. Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to obtain real-time moving images of the interior of an object. A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined. The live images are viewed immediately for the Radiologist to evaluate. It is commonly used to evaluate swallowing or gastric reﬂux problems. There is also a new digital portable X-ray machine in the department. This machine is able

to go anywhere in the hospital and bring high-quality imaging right to the patient’s bedside. Since the image comes up instantly, if any repeat images need to be taken, they can be done immediately, with minimal movement of the patient, who is often in pain or has difficulty moving into different positions. “We are ultimately making the patient experience more comfortable by efficiently delivering high quality, doseconscious images every time,” states Amanda Leiran, Radiology Supervisor. This new digital X-ray system produces clearer images for the radiologist to read. Since the images are computerized, the radiologist can easily adjust the brightness and contrast, or zoom in to specific areas of interest. There is always a radiologist available to read emergent exams, day or night. All digital x-rays are stored just like computer files. This is a great convenience to compare one image to another. Also, if a patient gets transferred to a larger facility, we are able to send images electronically to most area hospitals and clinics. "We're excited to be able to serve our patients as well as our physicians with better images in a more efficient and timely manner," states Keisha Coon, X-ray Technologist.

This is especially exciting for expecting families in the community, as they will be able to view their baby in a whole new way. The standard 2D imaging looks through the baby to show the internal organs, but with the 3D and 4D scans, parents can see their baby’s skin.

Veterans Memorial Hospital special weekend clinics available over the holidays Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon will be offering special holiday weekend clinics Saturday, December 24, Sunday, December 25, and Monday, December 26, from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The following weekend for the New Year’s holiday, the weekend clinics will also be available Saturday, December 31, Sunday,

January 1, and Monday, January 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. each day Weekend Clinics are held every Saturday and Sunday year-round at Veterans Memorial Hospital for non-emergencies and help save families the cost of regular emergency room fees on the weekends when the other local clinics are closed.

The grandparents have even shared in the fun and I have heard them state, ‘This is the neatest thing since sliced bread!’ I am honored I get to see the patient reactions to this new detailed ultrasound. This isn’t the first time the hospital’s Radiology department has been on the cutting edge of digital technology. The computed radiology equipment at Veterans Memorial Hospital was the first of its kind in Northeast Iowa when it was installed in 2009 and has now recently been replaced. Kelly Baxter, a new X-ray Technologist to Veterans Memorial Hospital adds, "We are so fortunate to work in a small hospital that is willing to grow and keep up with healthcare as it continues to advance in technology every year." Earlier this year, the Radiology Department was the first in the area to purchase a new High-Definition Ultrasound machine with 3D and 4D capabilities. Expecting families in the community can now view their baby in a whole new way. In addition to the black and white images that are sometimes hard to visualize, there is also 3D and 4D images taken. Like regular ultrasounds, 3D and 4D ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image of the baby in the womb. What's different is that 3D ultrasounds create a three-dimensional image of the baby, while 4D ultrasounds

2 medium acorn squash (or whatever kind you prefer) 1 lb. sausage- seasoned or regular 1 box stove top stufﬁng 1/2 cup celery, chopped 1/2 cup onion, chopped 3/4 cup dried cranberries 1/2 - 3/4 cup pecans, chopped 1 cup maple syrup

Remove seeds from squash. Place cut side down in microwave safe dish. Cover and microwave on high 8 minutes. Crumble sausage into large skillet; add onion and celery. Cook until meat is done. Mix stove top according to directions; add cranberries, pecans, maple syrup and sausage mixture. Turn squash cut side up. Stuff with sausage mixture. Bake at 350 about 1/2 hour or until squash is done. Serve with warmed maple syrup.

Neighbors Care project sending ‘Caring Teddies’ to families in need

“Neighbors Care” is an undertaking by the Allamakee Democrats. They are sending a message to children and families who are struggling with fears of separation through deportation. This message is being sent via the ‘Caring Teddies’. Community leaders have heard of children living in Allamakee and Clayton Counties who fear each day worrying whether

their mother or father will be forcibly taken out of the home and shipped to their country of origin. They hear of children bursting into tears when a parent is a few minutes late in picking them up from school. Anxiety, worry and apprehension can be overwhelming for children as their basic sense of security and safety are threatened. Karen Pratte, Allamakee

Democrats’ project organizer, explained: “These are our neighbors who are a part of our communities, and we want them to know people care about them and value all families and children. We believe that our communities are strongest when we care about one another.” The ‘Caring Teddies’ will be delivered to the children in time for Christmas.

Chocolate-Mint Dream Sandwich Cookies • 3/4 cup butter softened • 1/2 cups powdered sugar • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled • 3/4 tsp. peppermint extract • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup (6 oz.) miniature semisweet chocolate chips Filling • 1-1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar • 3 Tbsp. butter softened • 5 to 6 tsp. 2% milk • 3/4 tsp. peppermint extract Chocolate Glaze • 1-1/2 cups (9 oz.) dark chocolate chips • 2 tsp. shortening • 1/8 tsp. peppermint extract • crushed candy canes

Holiday Salsa • 1 pkg. (12 oz.) fresh or frozen cranberries • 1 cup sugar • 6 green onions, chopped • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped • 1 jalapeno pepper seeded and finely chopped • 1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese softened • assorted crackers or tortilla chips Pulse cranberries and sugar in a food processor until coarsely chopped. Stir together with onions, cilantro and jalapeno. Cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight. To serve place cream cheese in a serving plate. Drain salsa, spoon over cream cheese. Serve with crackers or chips. This sweet tart salsa will get your party started.

Discharges Club Cracker Clubs Had these a couple weeks ago. I thought they were really good. It’s Nancy Engelhardt’s recipe in the Presbyterian Cookbook.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in cooled chocolate and extract. Gradually beat in flour. Fold in chocolate chips. Drop cookie dough by tablespoons 2 inch apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Flatten to 1/4 inch thickness. Bake until set 6-8 minutes. Cool on pans for 2 minutes. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool completely. Mix filling ingredients. Spread filling onto the bottom halves of the cookies. Cover with remaining cookies. For Glaze, microwave chocolate chips and shortening until melted stirring often add extract. Dip about a third of each cookie into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off, top with candy canes place on waxed paper, refrigerate until set.

• Club Crackers • 2 sticks of butter (not oleo) • 1/2 cup sugar • 3/4 cup chopped nuts First place tin foil, shiny side down, on jelly roll pan. Place crackers close together to cover pan. Second melt butter and add the sugar. Bring to a boil and boil 3 minutes. Take off stove and add the nuts. Third, pour butter-sugar mixture over the crackers. Carefully, bake in 350 degree F. oven for 7 to 10 minutes. Remove foil from the pan, with the crackers still on. Carefully take the crackers apart.

Both companies are farmer-owned dairy cooperatives and recognized leaders within the dairy industry. A northeast Iowa woman says a lucky feeling led her to a big lottery prize this week. Wendy Norton of Waukon claimed the 23rd of 72 prizes of $10,000 available in the lottery’s “$250,000 Riches” scratch game. She said she bought her winning ticket at Kwik Star, 101 Rossville Road in Waukon. Norton said she’s an occasional lottery player but she thought she’d try her luck on the $250,000 Riches scratch game because her son-inlaw had just won $100 playing it. “I was driving home the next day, feeling a little lucky, and thought, ‘I’m going to go get me one of those,’” Norton told lottery employees Wednesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids. The 54-year-old said she scratched off her ticket after finishing her errands that day. “I started to scratch it off and it was the last thing I scratched off on that ticket,” Norton said. “And then I thought that I wasn’t seeing it right, so I got out the magnifying glass and then I started shaking because it’s like, ‘I really think I won this!’” Norton said she needed confirmation, though, before she started to celebrate. So she returned to Kwik Star and checked her ticket using a lottery self-checker inside the store. She also had a store clerk verify that she won $10,000. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, you’ve got a big one here,’” she said. “They’re like, ‘This never happens in Waukon.’” Norton said a home remodeling project is at the top of her list after winning the lottery. She said she also plans to save a portion of her winnings for retirement. The $250,000 Riches scratch game is a $20 ticket. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court” Clayton County________________ On November 26, 2016 at 9:53 PM, Clayton County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the Great River Road near McGregor. Upon further investigation, Deputies observed sign of intoxication from the driver. Deputies arrested 28 year old Trevor Collins of Spring Grove Minn. for Operating while intoxicated 1st offense. Collins was transported to the Clayton County Jail pending an appearance in Magistrate Court. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by MarMac Police. On November 27, 2016 at approximately 2:30 AM, Clayton County Deputies along with the Monona Police Department responded to a car on the railroad tracks on North Egbert Street in Monona. Upon further investigation, Officer’s observed signs of intoxication from the driver. 21 year old Ian Mueller of Luana was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense. Mueller was transported to the Clayton County Jail pending an appearance in Magistrate Court. On November 27, 2016 at 6:42 AM, Clayton County Deputies responded to a car vs. deer accident on Highway 18 near Jasper Ave. Upon further investigation it was determined that Alisha Thompson was operating a 2015 Ford Fusion when she struck a deer causing $3,000 damage. No injuries were reported. On November 28, 2016 at 10:34 PM, Clayton County Deputies responded to a disturbance on

the City of Volga. Upon further investigation, it was determined that an assault had taken place and the assailant had left the residence. On November 29 at 1:30 PM, Clayton County Deputies located the suspect. Deputies arrested 33 year old Caine Wille of Volga. He was transported to the Clayton County Jail where he was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault (Class D Felony), Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, Obstruction of emergency communication, assault, assault causing bodily injury, child endangerment causing bodily injury, and child endangerment. On December 1, 2016 at 6:30 PM, Clayton County Deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at the Roundhouse Apartments. While attempting to serve the warrant the subject barricaded himself in an apartment. Deputies along with assisting Officer’s forced entry into the apartment where they arrested 35 year old Jesse Colsch of Marquette on a Clayton County Warrant for Delivery of Meth, and interference with official acts. Deputies also arrested 35 year old Colin Protsman of Waukon for Interference with official act. Both were transported to the Clayton County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Mar Mac Police, Monona Police, Garnavillo Police, and Prairie Du Chien Police. On December 3, 2016 at 4:37 PM, Clayton County Deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle at a residence on Alpha Ave near Strawberry point. Through the course of the investigation, Deputies learned that 19 year old Tyler Kelly of Mechanicsville had stolen the vehicle after his vehicle broke down and took it to Olin Iowa where the vehicle was located by the Jones County Sheriff’s Office. Kelly was subsequently arrested and transported to the Clayton County Jail where he was charged with Theft-2nd Degree (Class D Felony). The Sheriff’s Office was

Fayette County_________________ On December 1, 2016 at approximately 11:37 PM Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a car vs. horse accident at County Road W51 and Diamond Road. 22 year old Wyatt Guyer was traveling south on County Road W51 in a 2001 Dodge Ram truck when he came upon a horse in the roadway. Guyer’s vehicle struck the horse causing approximately $8,000 damage. No injuries were reported. On December 4, 2016 at approximately 5:55 AM the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 reporting a single vehicle accident in the area of 110th Street on Highway 150. Upon investigation it was determined 20 year old Sarah Wallace of Waterloo was traveling north on Highway 150 when, due to weather conditions, lost control of her Buick van and entered the east ditch. Wallace’s vehicle briefly went airborne over a box culvert and came to rest in a creek bed. Wallace was transported to Palmer Hospital in West Union and treated for injuries. Her vehicle is believed to be a total loss. Fayette Ambulance, Fayette Fire Department and First Responders assisted with the accident. On December 4, 2016, at approximately 2:08 am the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call of harassment on Juniper Road. After further investigation, Sheriff’s Deputies were able to make contact with the suspect James Steven Koester, age 53 of West Union. During the investigation, Koester was found to be intoxicated. Koester was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense (Serious Misdemeanor). Koester was transported to the Fayette County Jail for an initial appearance.

It was determined that Allamakee County Economic Development will pay the $500 on behalf of the County for this year and it will be looked at for the next ﬁscal year budget. Holiday Lights Magical Nights benefiting Helping Services for Youth & Families

The story of Christmas From time to time as Christmas approaches, I love to pull out one of my sons’ board books and read it to them. The book, written by Joseph Slate entitled “Who is Coming To Our House,” gives a glimpse of what happened in the barn over 2,000 years ago. “Who is coming to our house?” “Someone, someone,” says Mouse. Who is that someone? As Christmas approaches just a few short days ahead I’ll recite Matthew 1:18-2:12 of the New International Version. This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”--which means, “God with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet

Dear Editor, Many of your readers are likely familiar with Holiday Lights Magical Nights, the lights display at Decorah Pulpit Rock Campground, benefiting Helping Services for Youth & Families. It’s easy to see the bright lights and displays but forget about why the event exists. I was reminded of this when a young child visiting the Lights told Santa that all he wanted for Christmas was for his family to be happy. Sometimes it takes a child to remind us of what is most important during the holidays. The other thing that is easy to forget is the outpouring of volunteers that are required to make moments like this happen. Frankly, neither the

Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he

had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.” So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. Writing your obituary can focus the mind on what is important in your life and help you redirect your energies if you aren’t on the right path. Obituaries these days tend to be a bit more personal than in the past. People may confess that they struggled with addiction or other serious problems, and they may share opinions or express words of wisdom from the deathbed. Thinking about and writing your own obituary will force you to be clearer about what is important to you. So consider writing yours. Don’t just include the dry biographical facts, but be sure to write about your life’s work and what it meant to you. You may think that your life’s work is trivial or humble, but did it give you the opportunity to help and serve others? And what did you feel passionately about outside of work, and why? Were you devoted to your family and friends, and if so, how? And how, in the final analysis, do you want to be remembered? Pirates defeat Central 59-34 as Pirates defeat Ed-Co and Clayton Ridge in duals; Chilel finishes first four score in double digits CHAD DRAHN

HERALD SPORTS The Pirates hosted Central last Tuesday in what turned out to be the only game of the week as Friday’s game was cancelled due to the snow and frigid temperatures. The Pirates totally dominated the Warriors and would come away with the 59-34 victory. The young Pirates got off to a quick start as they outscored Central 23-7 in the ﬁrst quarter and took a 39-14 into the locker room at halftime. Coach Mike Sass said, “The game started out very well for us. We came out and made some plays and our shots were falling early which always helps.” He added, “The offense was great. I thought we played under control for the entire game. Sometimes we play too fast for our own good, but in this game we did not do that. We ﬁnished our shots in close to the basket and we handled their press extremely well.” Starters for the Pirates were Jacob Steffans, Owen Jacobson, Blake Wettleson, Aboody Abdullahi and Nick Jacobs. Wettleson led all scorers with 13 points while Steffans, Jacobson and Abdullahi had ten each. Jacobs contributed six

as did Harrison Dehning who came in off the bench. Sass noted, “I thought Aboody did a nice job of passing the ball and finding open guys while playing under control. Unfortunately, we are still struggling at the free throw line. It is one place where we must get better.” Rounding out the scoring were Avery Enyart and Abdikani Osman who pumped in two each. The defense was also a bright spot in the game for the Pirates. Sass explained, “We forced some tough shots and forced a lot of turnovers. I thought this was our best rebounding game so far.” The coach said, “We were in control at half, so we just wanted to come out in the third quarter with the same energy and intensity that we had been playing with in the first half.” Although Central outscored the Pirates 10-6 in the final quarter, Postville upped their record to 4-2 on the season with the win. With the win they increased their field goal shooting percentange. Free throws continue to be a problem for the team as they are shooting only 46.2% from the charity stripe.

HERALD SPORTS Tuesday night the Pirates went 2-1 in dual meets. They defeated the host team Ed-Co and also Clayton Ridge. However, Maquoketa Valley was able to get the win over the Pirates for the second time this season Elfego Marroquin, Uvaldo Camarillo, Alfonzo Vazquez, Mac Hughes and Cole Spain led the way going 3-0 on the night. Aldo Gonzalez got a big win against Clayton Ridge. Coach Bobby Schultz said, “He was able to fix a few things he wasn’t doing correctly and it led to him getting a big pin.” Sabino Chilel wrestled his first varsity matches of his career. He won a very exciting match against Clayton Ridge. Schultz said, “It was good to see him get a varsity win in his first match. Overall on the night we didn’t seem to have the same fire that we have been having. We came out a little flat. As the night went on we picked it up a notch. This week’s Pirate of the Week is Sabino Chilel who was nominated by his wrestling coach Bryan Mueller. Sabino is a junior on the Postville wrestling team where he wrestles in the 120 pound weight class. His coach said, “This is his ﬁrst year out and he has already had a Sabino Chilel lot of success. On the year Sabino has won a combination of varsity and jv matches. He currently has 15 wins with 9 of them being pins. He has taken ﬁrst place in every tournament he has wrestled in.” His coach added, “Sabino is one of those kids who picks up things fast. He watches the moves while the coaching staff demonstrates them, drills them, and then goes out on the mat does them. He is a very hard worker, and we are glad he decided to come out for the sport.” Chilel makes his home with his brother, Marco Chilel. Along with with wrestling, Sabino will be playing soccer in the spring.
