Keota showcases fine arts
By CJ Eilers News Editor To quote the lyrics of Neil Diamond, the Keota Jr/Sr High School music students closed out the 2016 performance year “So Good! So Good!” during their wide ranging Winter Fine Arts Night on Thursday, Dec. 15. Seven ensembles performed everything from world music to Christmas tunes throughout the evening in the Keota Elementary gym, which was full of families and friends eager to see the students perform one last time before winter break and the New Year. Keota’s own show choir, Eaglerock!, opened the program with their first public performance of the school year as they showcased their progressing group chemistry and soloists. As the junior high choir took to the stage next, Keota Music Director Jane Edwards joked about her students dreading when she says, “I took a class.” That meant a new idea for the ensemble, and Edwards brought in African percussive instruments for the choir to play while they also sang. Noting the difficulty for students to sing and play, Edwards directed the student through the short song, before moving into a

What was also humorous was the realization that Edwards had accidentally gone out of order, as the junior high band was supposed to be next. Of course, the show must go on, and senior high choir stayed on stage next
to perform “Season of Love”, “Going up to Bethlehem,” and “Na, Na, Na.” After the choirs were finished, the junior high band finally had their turn, playing “March of the Hyperion Guards” and “Drama for Your Mama”, with the latter featuring a saxophone solo from Colten Clarahan. The senior high band was the closer for the program, which included Diamond’s
Council holds last meeting of 2016
Amie Van Patten Regional Editor The council held their last council meeting for 2016 on December 19. The meeting started with employee evaluations of Frederick and Slaubaugh. During the Public Works report, Slaubaugh reported that the past weekend weather was rough on the city salt supply due to extreme temperatures and cutting through the ice, putting the city supply at approximately 70 percent. Public Works report was approved. In the citizen comments, Dan Flynn asked if Officer Conrad had completed his investigation on the threatening of busting windows out. The council advised Flynn he would have to wait to ask Conrad during the Police Department minutes. A building permit was approved for Jim Tinnes to put a building up. The

building will be approximately 36 by 45 or 45 by 40 in order to store additional equipment or personal vehicles. Officer Conrad reported that things have been quiet other than a complaint of a dog biting another dog. He stated the parties are planning on taking care of this and will be paying any vet bills that the other party accrued. The incident was documented. There was a complaint of a sled being pulled by four-wheeler in the street. Officer Conrad advised the parties that they needed to stay off of the street. Doug Conrad reported that the investigation of the threat of breaking out windows had been complete and the victim did not wish to pursue any charges so therefore the investigation is done. Police report was approved. The council approved the wording for Marshal Douglas Paul Bell,
an officer who was killed in the line of duty while working for the city of Keota. The paver will read “Marshal Douglas Paul Bell End of Watch 1976” the paver will be placed at the Keota Veteran’s Memorial. The council approved resolution 2016- 25: A Resolution Providing for the Financial Support of the Area 15 Regional Planning Commission. Council member Kathy Davis updated the council on Ordinance 257. Scott Flynn, city attorney, will attend a future council meeting to answer the questions. Matt Widman from HR Green was present to give an update on the Sewer System Project Update. The council approved the amendment to the contract to go ahead with the project. The meeting was adjourned. The next council meeting will be held on January 3.
Members of the junior high choir took on the challenge of world music drumming, which required them to play percussive instruments and sing at the same time.
swan song “Sweet Caroline” and a little fun from the junior high band as they waved along to the classic tune. “I felt our groups all did good, especially the fact I didn’t do them in the right order,” Edwards said. “The kids love this time of the year. Eaglerock! needs some work, as we have never performed the girls and boys songs before. We have stuff to fix before
our next performance January 14. The audience was phenomenal.” Art created by the students was also on display in the lobby for attendees to see before and after the program. Keokuk County Supervisors
By Aaron Putze, APR John Heisdorffer of Keota was elected vice president of the American Soybean Association (ASA) during meetings held last week in St. Louis. The former Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) president (2008-09) and director grows soybeans and corn and manages a feeder-to-finish pig operation. “It’s humbling and overwhelming all at the same time, but mostly overwhelming,” said Heisdorffer, a five-year veteran of the ASA board. “It’s always difficult to describe the feeling you have when your peers and fellow directors place that kind of trust in you.” Farming has always been in his blood — Heisdorffer will plant his 47th crop next spring. His leadership on behalf of the soybean industry began with an invitation nearly 25 years ago. Heisdorffer was serving on the Famers Coop (Keota) board of directors when the ISA came calling. “I thought that was quite a jump in leadership — to go from my local coop board to a state commodity board — but was open to the challenge,” he said. “Perhaps I agreed because I didn’t think my odds were too great. But I was elected and serving the soybean industry has opened one door after another. “It’s also provided the opportunity to share ideas and learn from other farmers,” Heisdorffer added. “You have some of the best farmers and
John Heisdorffer thinkers on these types of boards. So to have the chance to network with these people not only improves the industry but your own operation.” The ASA, he said, is the champion of the soybean farmer in Washington D.C. “As individual farmers, we can’t always be there to advocate on topics like the farm bill and the impact mergers and acquisitions may have on our operations. The ASA can be that voice, have the conversations and make the impact that perhaps we can’t do — and may not have the time to do — as individuals.” John and his wife Deanna are the parents of three grown children: Lisa, Jody and Chris. They also have seven grandchildren.

State Treasurer Fitzgerald Brings the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt to Your Town State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald wants to remind Iowans that this week your local paper will be featuring the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt in hopes of returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners. “Over 508,000 individuals have had unclaimed property returned to them through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program,” Fitzgerald stated. “The program is a great service to past and present Iowans and has been very successful. ”Unclaimed assets could be from forgotten or inactive savings/ checking accounts, utility refunds or deposits, uncashed insurance benefit checks, lost stock and dividends or even abandoned safe deposit box contents. When a person does not respond over an extended period of time to regular mailings from banks or corporations
holding their funds, the property is reported to the state treasurer. owners,” said Fitzgerald. “I encourage everyone to check their local newspaper and see if their name or the name of someone they know is listed, even if they don’t think they have unclaimed property.” The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt’s website was recently updated. If you see your name in the paper, please search our website by the property ID number published alongside your name. We also encourage Iowans to search by their last name to locate any other properties that may be owed to them. Visit the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt at GreatIowaTreasureHunt. gov to begin your search. Be sure to like Great Iowa Treasure Hunt on Facebook and follow the program on Twitter (@GreatIATreasure).

Public notices... why should you care? Without public notices, you’re left guessing. Reading public notices empowers you to exercise your rights as a citizen to know about government actions, and allows you time and opportunity to act on those notices that will affect your life, including: • School district budgets • Property auctions • Public hearings • Local tax changes • Meeting minutes
Dear Editor, Nurturing Families of Jefferson, Keokuk, Van Buren and Washington Counties is your local Community Partnership for Protecting Children site and would like to remind everyone that keeping children safe is everyone’s business. We are a group of 20+ members dedicated to protecting children in our community. To learn more about our work, please contact Tammy Wetjen-Kesterson at 319-321-5730 or Megan Richardson at quintyn2008@gmail.com. During the holidays, parents and children often spend more time together – something truly to be cherished in our fast paced world. However, sometimes the “togetherness” enhanced by cold weather keeping everyone cooped up inside can lead to stressful situations. Statistically speaking, in times of high stress, reports of child abuse increase. The
holidays, though wonderful, can often bring on stressful times for families when issues such as relationships, finances, and, let’s face it, bad weather come to a boil. We are asking parents to remember to “Keep Cool” this holiday season by managing your stress. The American Psychological Association recommends these ideas to reduce holiday stress as found on their website: Set expectations – Talk to your kids about expectations for gifts and holiday activities. Be open with them if
money is an issue. Depending on a child’s age, parents can use this as an opportunity to teach their kids about the value of money and responsible spending. And be realistic. Take small concrete steps to deal with holiday tasks instead of overwhelming yourself with goals that are too far reaching for a busy time. Keep things in perspective – Try to consider stressful situations in a broader context and keep a longterm perspective. Avoid blowing events out of proportion and teach your kids how to keep things in perspective, including what type and the number of gifts they receive. Make connections – Good relationships with family and friends are important. So, view the holidays as a time to reconnect with people. Additionally, accepting help and support from those who care about you can help alleviate stress. Even
volunteering at a local charity with your kids is a good way to connect with others, assist someone in need and teach your kids about the value of helping others. Take care of yourself – Pay attention to your own needs and feelings during the holiday season. Engage in activities that you and your family enjoy and find relaxing. Taking care of yourself helps keep your mind and body healthy and primed to deal with stressful situations. Consider cutting back television viewing for kids and instead, get the family out together for a winter walk. It promotes activity and takes kids away from sedentary time and possible influence from advertisements. CPB and PBS partner with Iowa Public Television to support early learning in low-income communities Unique community collaborative focuses on science and literacy through Ready To Learn Initiative The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) today announced partnerships with Iowa Public Television (IPTV) and four other public media stations in Indiana, Missouri, Nevada and Oklahoma. IPTV, Nine Network (St. Louis, MO), Oklahoma Educational Television Association, VegasPBS (KLVX) and WFYI (Indianapolis, IN)], will join 11 public media stations that have been conducting similar work since December 2015 to provide early learning resources to underserved communities through an innovative community engagement model. IPTV will receive an initial Community Collaboratives for Early Learning and Media (CC-
ELM) grant to give young children from low-income families a strong foundation in early science and literacy by identifying and working with community partners. Station partnerships will include schools, public libraries, science centers, health clinics and housing agencies that serve highneed populations. IPTV will work with community partners Storm Lake Elementary School, Storm Lake Elementary Tornado Academy, and the Storm Lake Public Library to implement new PBS KIDS science and literacy-based programming, mobile apps and digital games. Stations will leverage content from trusted PBS KIDS series Ready Jet Go!and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot
About That!, along with new media properties that are in development which will address scientific inquiry and informational text for young children. “Local public media stations play an essential role pioneering a unique community partnership model that uses public media’s high-quality children’s educational content as a catalyst for school readiness,” said Deb Sanchez, CPB’s Senior Vice President of Education and Children’s Content. “By working hand-in-glove with local organizations, public media can provide engaging learning opportunities - anytime and anywhere - for highneed children and families.” “Through their work on the ground in communities across
America, PBS stations play an integral role in helping our nation’s most underserved kids succeed in school and in life,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Children’s Media and Education, PBS. “PBS is thrilled to bring five more stations on board for this innovative project, which builds on years of research demonstrating that PBS KIDS content is effective in helping children learn critical math and literacy skills, with kids in low-income households making the greatest gains.” “This collaborative program will help IPTV reach children in some of Iowa’s most challenged neighborhoods and provide them with educational resources to help them
succeed in school,” said Molly Phillips, IPTV Executive Director and General Manager. “We are excited to partner with CPB and PBS in bringing even more Ready To Learn resources to Iowa, furthering our mission to educate, inform, enrich and inspire Iowans, no matter where they live or what they can afford.” This effort is part of a five-year grant awarded to CPB and PBS through the U.S. Department of Education’s Ready To Learn Initiative to advance new tools supporting personalized and adaptive content for children and parents, establish a network of community collaboratives and conduct efficacy research on the educational resources provided.
As the holidays draw near, NFPA issues lithium ion battery safety tip sheet for consumers You would be hard-pressed to find a holiday shopping list today that doesn’t include a device, toy, tool or new technology that contains lithium ion batteries. To help consumers take care when using smart phones, laptops, scooters, remote control gadgets, wearable technology, and a host of other products on the market right now, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has developed a lithium ion battery safety tip sheet for consumers. Fire issues related to lithium ion batteries have dominated news reports for more than a year. This summer, the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled more than a half-million hoverboards that involved 10 companies, and in October the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) banned Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices from all flights. Flight attendants continue to warn air travelers today to power down their devices during pre-flight safety instructions. Lithium ion batteries are ideally suited for today’s streamlined, lightweight, high-tech consumer products but convenience comes with concern. The compact batteries store a large amount of energy; and if not used properly, can overheat and cause a fire or explosion.

Geraldine “Gerry” Farrier, 75, of Washington, Iowa came to Parkview November 30, 2016 needing assistance/therapy after a fall she had. Gerry grew up on a farm in Washington County with her two parents who were VERY hard working farmers and had 13 children. Gerry’s former spouse is deceased, but they were blessed with 2 sons and 1 daughter, 7 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 1 great granddaughter, and 3 great step-grandchildren. After graduating high school, Gerry started airline training as well as training for income tax preparing. She loves the outdoors, which include such things as camping, walking, gardening (flowers and vegetables) and spending time attending all the grandchildren’s activities she can. She loves steak, fried chicken and liver and onions. When Gerry is cheering for a team, it’s definitely our Iowa Hawkeyes. After a short stay of only 8 days, Gerry was discharged to home because of her motivation to get back to her normal life and our exceptional team of therapists. Her favorite part about therapy was the therapists themselves. “They were all so helpful and friendly. My improvement was their focus.” She did admit that her least favorite part of therapy was being worn out afterwards, but knew that every time she felt that fatigue, she was one step closer to home. When we asked Gerry if she had a favorite therapist, she said, “I loved each of them for who they were and for the way they helped me.” The hardest part of therapy for her was not being able to do everything for herself. When we asked her what the first thing she planned to do upon discharge was, “Go to my own home!” All of us at Parkview understand and strive to do just that for each and every one of our skilled patients. Their success IS our success. Parkview absolutely adored having Gerry and would take 100 more just like her. She was truly a pleasure to work with and absolutely gorgeous both inside and out. What’s even more amazing is that Gerry made a dear friend, Ms. Sandy Schauf, (who happened to be her roommate) here at Parkview. They will remain lifelong friends after getting to spend just a little over a week together.
For a tour of our facility or more information on what Parkview offers, please call Jenny Tobin at 319-646-2911. Parkview offers so much more than you think, and we’d love to show you sometime.

Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor IOWA CITY- The Cobra wrestlers were ready to go despite the freezing temperatures outside on Saturday, Dec. 17 when they traveled to Iowa City to participate in a invite hosted by Regina High School. On a day when just about every other activity had been canceled, the SK wrestlers were in action early on Saturday. Overall, the Cobras took second in the tourney scoring 165.00 team points, finishing only behind Mount Vernon. This was SK’s last wrestling action before the holiday break, as they will head in with an undefeated duel record and having placed very high in every invite they have participated in thus far. SK will also go into the break a top ten-ranked team in Dual rankings, and two individuals, Kaleb Reeves and Noah Boender, ranked in the top ten in their weight. It has been a very good start to the season for SK and that success continued on Saturday at Regina. Noah Boender (220) and Cale Jarmes (113) both took home first place, while Zech Boender, Alec Schuster, Noah and Kaleb Reeves as well as Cooper Greiner all finished runner-up in their respective weights classes’. “The team has won a few close duals against some solid teams and dominated the others. The older guys dominating and the young guys stepping up and fighting made that possible. It’s very good timing for this break. It will allow a couple guys to get to weight, solidifying our line up, and it will also allow a couple guys to heal from some nagging injuries that they have been wrestling with.” Said head wrestling coach Craig Reeves regarding his team’s start to this season. SK will be
off until the first week of January.

Tri-County and Sigourney-Keota both in action at Tri-County Tuesday Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor THORNBURG- Sigourney-Keota remained undefeated this season so far in duels with three more wins Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Tri-County. The Cobras swept every weight against the host school, as TC is only two wrestlers deep this season, SK with the 78.00-0.00 win. Then, SK beat Lynnville-Sully 54.00-27.00. Then, SK won a close duel against Southeast Warren 39.00-38.00, by a mere point. Tri-County went 0-3 as they are unable to compete as a team in Duels, but Harper had a nice night winning against L-S while wres-
tling up, and defeating Southeast Warren’s Alex Hommer in a 5-4 decision. Noah McCammant also won both his matches against these two schools, but both fell against SK. SK saw Zech Boender with a win at 138 against L-S, Alec Schuster got in on the action pinning his opponent in less than a minute. Cooper Greiner took care of business pinning Caleb Barnett of L-S at the 3:06 mark. And SK cruised to a pretty easy victory over L-S. The duel of the night was most definitely SK and Southeast Warren. Mason Dye led things off with a big win at 106 lbs. Luke House got

SK back on track with a win in a 7-3 decision at 126 lbs. SEW went on a run winning six straight matches and looking like they were going to run away with the duel victory, but SK’s heavy weights brought the pain. Noah Reeves pinned his opponent at 182 in less than 20 seconds! Then Kaleb Reeves followed suit with a 19 second pin of his own. Noah Boender took his time to pin his opponent in 33 seconds and Cooper Greiner pinned his opponent Conner Bregger at 3:43 to steal a victory in the last match for SK.

Lady Eagles play hard, but growing pains persist falling at EV Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor NORTH ENGLISH- The Lady Eagles continue to struggle through the early goings of the season as they fell at English Valleys High School on Tuesday, Dec. 13 40-21. Keota once again had a rough night shooting only connecting on six of their 33 shot attempts. They did snag 21 team rebounds including six on the offensive end, but it wasn’t enough to help propel them past the Lady Bears. Things got off to a very rocky start, as Keota found themselves down 15-2 after one quarter, and down 24-2 at the half. However, the Lady Eagles

showed excellent fight as they played a solid second half outscoring EV 1916, but were unable to climb back into this one. “We had a really rough night at English Valley. We did not get off to a good start and we could not right the ship. We had turnovers on our first four possessions while they hit shots on theirs. They did shoot very well on the night and had many kids step up and make baskets. We did not handle the physical/aggressiveness that they had. This is again a learning opportunity, see what we can fix and go back at it. Addison Swanson played her best game so far on her
young career, as she was aggressive on both ends of the floor. Addison Sprouse took over the ball handling duties and got us in some nice sets in the second half. We will continue to build off this and come out strong next week.” Said head coach Jeff Sprouse about his team’s performance on Tuesday. Keota was led in scoring by Raigan Sprouse who had seven points. Addison Swanson scored six, while Jill Schulte added four and Erin Chalupa three. Addison Sprouse snagged five rebounds and had three assists and three steals. Keota falls to 0-8 with the loss.

Eagles devour the Bears 67-22 Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor NORTH ENGLISH- The Eagles soared on Tuesday, Dec. 13 when they stomped the Bears of English Valleys 67-22. It was a fast a furious start for the Eagles has they were hitting on all cylinders dropping 23 points in the first and second quarters a piece en route to a 46-7 halftime lead. In the second half after a 17-4 third quarter, Koeta emptied the bench and was able to get a lot of kids some extra work on this night. Keota has now reeled off five straight victories, and with there game against Lynnville-Sully being postponed on Friday due to the weather, they will sit atop the SICL east division tied with Belle Plaine, who Keota will get another crack at later in the season. Regarding his team’s play coach Dan Stout was very happy with

Addison Sprouse, Girls Basketball The Keota athlete of the week this week is Addison Sprouse. Sprouse has been a key part of Keota’s Lady Eagles team this year. Even though the Lady Eagles are 0-8 they have continued to fight as a team, and Addison has shown that even though she is only a sophomore, she is a team leader alongside her sister Raigan. Addison is the daughter of head coach Jeff Sprouse, and he is understandably proud of Addison’s accomplishments thus far this year. “Addison has done a fantastic job so far this year. She leads us in almost all statistical categories including rebounds/game, assists/ game, steals/game and is second in pts/game. She also leads us in charges drawn with 5 so far. Her determination and strength really allow her to compete on both ends of the floor. She has done an outstanding job of getting to the free throw line so far this year. She loves the game and is always trying to get better, staying after practice to shoot or discuss basketball.” Said coach Sprouse regarding Addison. Addison Sprouse is second on the team in points at 5.6 a game, she lead Keota in rebounds with an average of 6.6 a game, she also adds two assists and two steals a game on average to her stats. If and when Keota is able to turn things around
