Inspirational Stories • Letters to Santa • Photos • Holiday Recipes Deb and Floyd Schmidt team up to make holiday painted screens and other unique gifts SHARON DRAHN A JOLLY ELF!
Deb and Floyd Schmidt, who have been married since 1989, have been sharing their artistic talents for the majority of their married lives. Deb said, “From the beginning, we were always making something as we both enjoyed crafts. Some of the first things we made were painted wooden shelves and lawn ornaments. We always made the shelves out of oak. It was the most popular wood in the 80’s and 90’s.” Most recently the couple has been combining their talents to make painted holiday screens and so much more. Deb said, “Our crafts and creations have evolved and have been a work in progress for many years.” She added, “Art has always come naturally to me. I took art in school, but too often I wanted to do my own thing rather than follow the norm. When I was a kid I would collect rocks and paint them. I made door stops for everyone. My whole family was pretty creative as well. My parents made furniture and my brothers and sisters were artistic too.” The couple, who has lived in Castalia nearly all of their married
life, opened a small craft store in their home when their daughters were small. Deb said, “It was about this time that we began going to craft sales as well.” Although they could not come up with an exact date, they noted that they began their endeavor in earnest in the early 1990’s. The craft shop, which was located on their back porch was named “The Little Craft Closet.” She said, “My mom came up with the name and we thought it was appropriate since the space was no bigger than a closet. We sold painted magnets, oak shelves, plaques and Amish cut-outs, to name a few.” When recollecting those early projects, Floyd said with a smile, “We quite often see some of our early projects in second hand shops such as the Depot and Good Will.” Deb added, “We usually have to buy them back just for the nostalgia.” While running their “Little Craft Closet”, the couple and their small children began setting up their creations at flea markets around the area. Floyd said, “At first we weren’t welcome as they were catering to antique dealers but they soon found out that we brought a whole different crowd to their markets.” Asked how they transported
their crafts back and forth to the various shows, Deb said, “At first we packed everything in the back of the truck and we slept in a tent. The girls, Mandy, Jessica and Sarah were put to work helping us load and unload. Even though we tried to convince them we were going on a camping adventure, they soon got tired of the routine.” Things got a bit easier, however, when the Schmidt’s purchased a school bus and refurbished it to fit their needs. Deb said, “It was so nice to have a permanent place to keep our crafts while being able to sleep in a real bed. The kids thought they were in heaven.” Asked about their years on the road, Deb noted, “I drew all my patterns myself. There was no such thing as Pinterest and I pretty much came up with all my own ideas. The projects were a joint effort. I would draw and paint and Floyd would cut and varnish. We were always changing our stock as people were always looking for something new. We had many repeat customers.” During their flea market and craft sale days, along with their oak shelves and yard ornaments, the trikes and wagons that Floyd handcrafted and Deb painted were very popular. “People,” Deb said, “Are way more interested in re-purposed items these days. They want rustic and beat up things. You have to change with the times.” After working with Floyd for a time in the construction business, and with his health no longer allowing him to climb ladders, the couple has gotten back into creating artistic pieces which they sell at shows and through word of mouth. For the past few years, the snow people, Santa’s and scenes Deb paints on screens have become the most popular. Floyd said, “I make the frame and tack in the screen and she does the painting. We start with a new frame and screen. It just works better than using old doors and screens.” Deb added, “We have used barn
wood as well. Sometimes you are able to pick it up at garage sales but in the last few years it has gotten very expensive.” Floyd said, “I still do some small construction, and remodeling but we are able to work together on the screens and other projects.” The couple, who have been sharing their talents at the Country Christmas Craft Boutique for the last four years are finding it very rewarding. Deb said, “While we have been able to provide day care for our grandchildren, as they have gotten older, we are able to spend more time on our art projects as most of them are in school.” She said, “I can complete three or four paintings in a day and have done as many as nine. We have an enclosed and heated sun room which I have pretty much taken over.” Floyd added, “We work well
together. I make the frames and spray the front and back of each screen when she is finished. The screens hold up well and don’t fade. She also paints on pallets that I also help with.” The Schmidt’s, who also share their creations at Jackie Lechtenberg’s Salvage Sisters several times each year, said, “A whimsical theme is a best seller right now. We are able to put anything on a screen.” Deb added, “Each screen is different as I don’t use a pattern but rather paint free hand. I can add poems or personal messages if requested.” Some of the most popular subjects, the couple agreed, are holidays, sports, flowers and gardening scenes. Along with Christmas themes, Deb also paints Halloween and Valentine’s Day themed screens.
She added, “I have also done Earth Day and Fourth of July scenes. If given a topic or theme, I can pretty much recreate it.” As Deb explained, “Our hobby that grew into a business also includes Christmas trees made out of pallets, snow pallets and deer stumps. Other projects are pretty vast. A few that come to mind are headboards, benches, and wine bottle holders.” “We’re far from rich, but we have a lot of love to share and are able to do that with these creations. It makes us so happy when people like our work and ask us to make them something special,” concluded Deb. If anyone is still looking for a one of a kind unique gift this holiday season, give Floyd and Deb a call. You can also find Deb on Facebook. You won’t be disappointed.

Holiday Greetings 2016
The Elf on the Shelf tradition has become very popular throughout the United States in the past several years as these Santa’s helpers monitor who has been naughty and who has been nice. But, few people are aware of how these “Elves” are born. Printed below is the history of the tradition as printed on the official Elf on the Shelf website. It is reprinted here with permission. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition is a 2004 children’s picture book, written by Carol Aebersold and daughter Chanda Bell and illustrated by Coë Steinwart. The book tells a Christmas-themed story, written in rhyme, that explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and who is nice. It describes elves visiting children between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, after which they return to the North Pole until the next holiday season. The Elf on the Shelf comes in a keepsake box that features a hardbound picture book and a small soft toy in the form of a pixie scout elf. The story describes how Santa’s “scout Elves” hide in people’s homes to watch over events. Once everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning around the house, the scout elf and the family play an on-going game of hide and seek. The Elf on the Shelf explains that scout elves get their magic by being named and being loved by a child. In the back of each book, families have an opportunity to write their elf’s name and the date that they adopted it. Once the elf is named, the scout elf receives its special Christmas magic, which allows it to fly to and from the North Pole. The book tells how the magic might disappear if the scout elf is touched, so the rule for The Elf on the Shelf states, “There’s only one rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won’t hear all I’ve seen or I know.” Although families are told not to touch their scout elf, they can speak to it and tell it all their Christmas wishes so that it can report back to Santa accurately. The story ends on Christmas Day with the elf leaving to stay with Santa for the rest of the year until the following Christmas season.
‘Elfie’ the elf ‘Elfie’, who belongs to the Rieck family of Palo has been known to get into all kinds of trouble while watching over the children during the weeks before Christmas. The children Mason, 6, Preston, 3, and Ravon, 11 months, are never quite sure where they will find ‘Elfie’ each morning. Parents of the children are Travis and Nicole Rieck. They are also the great-nephews and great-niece of Herald editor, Sharon Drahn.
‘Ellie’ the elf ‘Ellie’ the elf lives at the home of Sophia, 7, and Seth, 4, Salinas, who are the children of Hector and Lindsay Salinas of Postville. Pictured below, you can see Ellie’s antics that are sometimes helpful and other days not so much.

Did you know? Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas
morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that
adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

ʻTwas the day before Christmas BY: DONA PECK ‘Twas the day before Christmas When all around the house I was cooking and cleaning And wondering where was my spouse The pies were all baking The ham I had scored And what did he say But that he was so bored With a rolling pin in my hand And a gleam in my eye I told him to get to work Or he surely would die! He flew out of the recliner Grabbed hold of the broom And flung it around Like an out of control loon Like all wives who recognize A disaster about to hit I led him to his recliner And told him just to sit With a tweek of his cheek And a rub on his head I told him I had it covered He had nothing to dread The Christmas spirit had hit me I’m happy to say And I told him all that matters At the end of the day It’s that we love one another Spreading love far and near Merry Christmas my dear friends And a Happy New Year!!

Bloomfield 4-Hers 4-H Club provides gift boxes to many in Castalia Former member, Angie Meyer recalled, “It always put a smile on their faces when we delivered the boxes. Fifteen years ago we would all pile in about five vans and drive around to the neighbors. We would sing one Christmas song and end with ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas.’” Current member. Kade Meyer, is the great-great grandson of Edna Green, who started the tradition. This year they provided over 30 gift boxes to homes in the Castalia area.

Every December, the Bloomfield 4-Hers 4-H Club provides gift boxes full of Christmas goodies and fruit to local community members. The Bloomfield 4-Hers 4-H Club was formerly known at Bloomfield Busy Bees and Bloomfield Jr. Farmers. They are based out of Castalia in Winneshiek County. Each 4-H family makes a different kind of treat to go into the gift boxes. The fruit is bought from the local FFA chapters’ fundraisers. After the food is gathered, the group gets together to pack the boxes. Along with the food, each box contains a Christmas card, hand signed by each member. The distribution of these gift boxes started as a tradition in the early 1950s, shortly after the Bloomfield Busy Bees 4-H club was organized by Helen & Edna Green. Bev (Green) Schrandt, former member and leader, remembers using a team of horses and wagons as the club went house to house. In later years they used a tractor and A gift box for the Pastor wagon as they sang Christmas Pictured on the right, 4-H members Kade Meyer, carols throughout the streets of Kylie Tieskoetter and Prestyn Bahr present a gift Castalia. box to Pastor Alan Wicks.

Reinhardt surprises his wife with freshly cut tree from their own front yard
little easier on me. Sometimes, my husband procrastinates, but to my surprise, I came home a couple nights later to to find a beautiful tree glowing in our window. I was touched to think of him doing this on his own and bit saddened that our ‘family tradition’ had with our kids out on our own and my business. I walked into the house and was very pleased with the shape, size and color of the tree. It was perfect! Then to my horror, I realized he had cut down the tree from our front yard. For obvious reasons, that was the last year we had a real tree.
Shirleen and Michael Reinhardt, who live near Gunder, on Agate Road had a tradition of cutting a fresh tree. Shirleen, the former Shirleen Larson and the daughter of the late Mervin and Elva Mae Larson tells the story like this: Michael and I always cut fresh trees, but the location changed over the years. We have photos from every year we began the tradition from when our daughter, Josie was two and up until recently. Three or four years ago, I was particularly busy during the holiday season and Michael offered to just go cut the tree to make things a

Finding the perfect tree JC and Natalie Kelly and their children have been cutting down a fresh Christmas tree for the past five years. They bundle up and take the children to Bapp’s Tree Farm in Freeport. Bapp’s is a family run tree farm that is open on weekends. Natalie said, “We love it . The kids dress up in the warm winter clothes and we cut down the perfect tree with a handsaw and drag it back to the shed. They have so many to choose from and we especially love the Balsam Firs. They smell amazing.” The Kelly children are Lauren, 8, Cole, 6 and Grace,1.
Now is the perfect time to let all of our loyal customers know how much we appreciate them. We look forward to serving you for years to come! Enjoy a safe & happy holiday with family & friends!
