West Fork Board of Education joint venture with Mason City

BY ZACH CLEMENS The West Fork Board of Education approved a consortium with the Mason City Community School District to jointly administer an instructional special education program at Pinecrest School.

Pinecrest School in Mason City gives special instruction to students who need more supports and help than a public school can provide.

“Pinecrest has been a real successful program for us,” West Fork Superintendent Darrin Strike said. “I

can think of a number of students who went through that program that are doing well in our school right now.”

Strike said that West Fork would pay Mason City to help with the cost of running the program, which can be “significant costs.” West Fork then gets reimbursed down the road.

High School guidance counselor Jen Knudson had submitted her resignation to the Board to be done with her position at the end of the semester.

“It has been a difficult year for Jen,” Strike said. “She just needs to be done.”

The Board approved the resignation on the contingency that another counselor would be hired before she leaves.

The Board approved West Fork’s involvement in the Iowa Association of School Boards program called The Promise of Iowa.

The Promise of Iowa is a campaign to focus attention on the future of Iowa public school students and to rally support for investments in public education.

“We believe funding a strong school system is important to the suc-

cess of Iowa,” Strike said.

The Board also discussed the upcoming changes to the public school system in Iowa that has been spearheaded by Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The Future Ready Iowa program is geared toward better aligning Iowa’s education, workforce and economic development efforts through the public school system.

There will be different academies at school based on six different educational concentrations to better gear students toward specific career and

technical skills. The focus areas are: business, finance, marketing and management, agriculture, food and natural resources, arts, communications and information systems, applied sciences, technology, engineering and manufacturing, health sciences and human services.

Guidelines for the new programs don’t have to be in place until summer 2017 and academies set up at the beginning of the school year in 2018.

‘I just wanted to Board to be aware of this and to keep your eyes on this,” Strike said.

West Fork reindeer games Elementary school presents their holiday music program

BY ZACH CLEMENS On Thursday, December 15, the West Fork Elementary School presented their holiday music program entitled “Reindeer Games” to a packed crowd in Rockwell.

The Preschool kicked it off with a rendition of “Eight Little Reindeer,” “Reindeer Pokie” and “Jingle Bells.”

The second-graders were next with a mix of classic holiday songs like “Rudolph the red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” with a Christmas themed recitation of the alphabet sprinkled in.

The West Fork third-graders came out dressed for the occasion in their best Christmas pajamas, singing hits like ‘Frosty the Snowman” and reciting “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

The fourth-graders ended the show with a short play with spoken and sung parts entitled “How to Train Your Reindeer.”

The second-graders sang some classic holiday tunes.

Swaledale City Council highlights

BY ZACH CLEMENS The Swaledale City Council met on December 9 for their regular monthly meeting and here are the highlights: The Council viewed the new ambulance for the Rockwell-Swaledale EMS team. Team members Carrie Brown and Heidi Van Horn were on hand to give the Council a tour.

Public Works Director Greg Meier reported to the Council that new chains are needed for the truck that cost approximately $50 for the set. He also stated he will be ordering new “children at play” signs for around town.

The city received a $5,000 grant from the Barkema Foundation that

will be used toward remodeling the park restrooms, which will be around $6,000 after accepting a bid from Becker Construction.

City Clerk Judy Witte noted that a Council member is needed to review bank statements for three months and it was decided that John Bonner would be asked to perform this task.

The abandoned property at 502 Main St that acquired by the city will be demolished. Alliant has already unhooked electrical service to the structure and the Council is waiting on the report from the asbestos check. Rex Liekweg will demolish it at a later date.

Owners of other nuisance properties have made progress to bring their properties into compliance.

The Thornton City Council appointed a new fire chief for the Thornton Volunteer Fire Department and approved a new ordinance in regards to responsibility of water lines at their regular meeting on December 5.

Councilmember Shelby Steenhard was unanimously approved as the new fire chief with the term running from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018.

The Council approved amending an ordinance for the responsibility and installation of water lines for the town. The ordinance states that the city shall maintain and install the service line from the main water line to the curb stop. The property owner is responsible for the line from the curb stop to the residence.

If the city must discontinue service due to non-payment of utility bills, customer damage, negligence or any other reason caused by the owner or resident and the curb stop malfunctions or breaks, the customer is responsible to replace the curb stop.

Two residents of Thornton received nuisance letters for their properties, with one resolving the issue. The Council agreed to have city attorney Mike Moeller send additional requirements to the resident.

City Clerk Michelle Duff reported that there were no bids or interest in the Fire Department’s equipment that had been listed for sale online.

The Council discussed options but no decision has been made yet.

The Clerk also reported that the city received a $2,000 grant from the Foster & Barkema Charitable Trust and will purchase tables and chairs for the Community Center.

It was decided that Sam’s Club had the best pricing and the Council approved a motion for the city to become a Sam’s Club member.

Ballot set for Meservey special election There are nine total candidates for four vacancies

BY ZACH CLEMENS The special election in Meservey on January 3 is set with nine candidates filing to be on the ballot before the December 9 deadline.

In recent months three different City Council members and the Mayor resigned for various reasons.

It was decided by the remaining Council members, with input from Cerro Gordo County Auditor Ken Kline, that a special election should be held to elect new city officials.

Lori Schmale is the only candidate

on the ballot for mayor.

For the Council seat ending on December 31, 2017, there are three candidates: Keith Johnson, Cyneva Zoe Myers and Mary Thome.

There are five candidates vying for two Council seats with terms ending on December 31, 2019.

Ben Allbee, Beth Avery, Denis Avery, Richard E. Harman and Monte Schmale are all on the ballot for the two positions.

Absentee ballots are available for Meservey residents and any eligible

voter may vote absentee at the county auditor’s office, or submit a written request for a ballot to be mailed to the voter.

Requests for a ballot should be mailed to the County Auditor, 220 N. Washington Ave, Mason City, IA 50401, and must include the voter’s name, birth date, address, signature and the date or name of the election.

Frances “Kay” Kruckenberg, 78, of Rockwell passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 Elm Street, Rockwell with the Reverend John Gossman of- FRANCES KRUCKENBERG ficiating. Burial will be in the Rockwell Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m.

Kay was born July 24, 1938, Rockwell, the daughter of Jack and Irene (Meehan) Fitzgerald. She graduated high school at Sacred 1938-2016 Heart High School, Rockwell, and Services: later attended North Iowa Area Com10 a.m., Wedsnday, Dec. 7 munity College, Mason City, graduSacred Heart Catholic Church ating as an LPN. Chapel, Mason City Kay married Melvin Kruckenberg on November 12, 1955. They were the parents of 5 children, Renee, Kris, Patrick, Sandy and Jim. Kay was a very loving and devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending sporting events, family vacations and trips to the casino. She loved gardening, playing cards, meeting with friends at McDonalds and loving her kitties. Kay was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Kay will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Renee (William) Rohlfsen, Kristen Kruckenberg, Patrick (Nickol) Kruckenberg, Sandra (Dan) Christeson and James (Tara) Kruckenberg. Ten grandchildren, Scott Rohlfsen, Adam (Olivia) Rohlfsen, Nicholas (Shana) Rohlfsen, Max (Erin) Rohlfsen, Kathleen (Nicholas) Trask, Carter Kruckenberg, Todd (McKenzie) Christeson, Eveejo (Travis) Goll, Elizabeth Kruckenberg and Samantha Kruckenberg; seven great-grandchildren, Treiton Rohlfsen, Brienna Rohlfsen, Machaela Trask, Kylie Trask, Rayna Christeson, Shane Christeson and Jakob Goll; two sisters Geraldine Hart and Sharon (Donald) Kruckenberg and one brother Leo Pat (JoAnn) Fitzgerald; brothers in-law and sisters in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Travis Fischer read them again. In recent years I’ve taken to collecting figures of my favorite fictional characters, partly to sate my collector’s impulse and partly because the only time investment required to enjoying them is the time it takes to look at them when I enter the room.

These days, a good gift is something I will use. Not something that “I’ll get to later.” Something like a new pop filter for my microphone, or a good medium sized pot, or even just a nice bottle of wine.

And that is how pants end up on Christmas lists.

A movie I’ll watch once and put on my shelf for eternity. A book or video game I may start, but who knows when I’ll finish it. But a nice pair of pants, that’s something I’ll get mileage out of. I wear pants nearly every day and I’m far less likely to grow out of them nowadays.

Which reminds me of another good gift idea. A gym membership.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

can derived from it. Something as mundane as clothing generally falls pretty low on that list, particularly for children who see clothing as a chore to take care of for a year until they inevitably grow out of them.

Growing up to become a gift giver as well as a receiver, I never understood my mother’s desire for new sweaters and slacks for holiday presents. I bought them anyway, but I always wondered how much somebody could possibly enjoy a new shirt.

I get it now. Once upon a time, I wanted more books, movies and video games than I could ever possibly read, watch or play. Now, from a practical stand point, I pretty much have that. My bookshelves are lined with novels that “I’ll get to someday,” right after I’ve beaten every video game on my PC and watched every movie on my Netflix list.

I’ll always want more, but I can’t honestly say I need more. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to enjoy it all. Which reminds me, I got a Star Wars puzzle for Christmas last year that I should probably put together.

Right after I watch the new Star Wars movie…and finish reading the Star Wars novel I’ve been working on…and maybe finish the story campaign in the latest expansion of the Star Wars MMO...it never ends.

It has happened.

This year for Christmas, I asked for clothes.

Not a novelty t-shirt or Star Wars themed underwear. Just plain old khaki pants. The same kind of pants I got for my birthday. The same pants I spent an hour waiting to buy on sale after Thanksgiving.

They are very comfortable pants.

And though they aren’t on my list, I wouldn’t mind getting some nice sweaters or button down shirts either. Something warm to expand my wardrobe in the winter months.

This is it. The end is here. At the age of 32 I think I’ve finally become an adult.

It’s all downhill from here. Soon I’ll be thinking about mortgages and become very concerned with derivatives and other grown up things. I may even start wearing ties.

Or not. After all, my wish list still consists mostly of cartoons, comic books and related merchandise. Mostly things I want, just not enough to buy for myself.

And now, included among those items, khaki pants.

It’s interesting how priorities change. At long last, I think I’ve discovered the secret behind the trope of out-of-touch grandparents giving disappointed children socks and sweaters for Christmas.

Putting “it’s the thought that counts” aside for a moment, let’s be honest. The measure of a good gift depends on how much enjoyment

The story of Christmas From time to time as Christmas approaches, I love to pull out one of my sons’ board books and read it to them.

The book, written by Joseph Slate entitled “Who is Coming To Our House,” gives a glimpse of what happened in the barn over 2,000 years ago.

“Who is coming to our house?”

“Someone, someone,” says Mouse.

Who is that someone?

As Christmas approaches just a few short days ahead I’ll recite Matthew 1:18-2:12 of the New International Version.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call

Push for the playoffs The playoff push is upon us and some teams have already clinched spots and divisions, while some have severely hurt their chances.

For the first time in 14 years, the Oakland Raiders are in the playoffs.

They clinched a playoff spot after beating their division rival San Diego Chargers 19-16.

It was an ugly game that saw a combined seven field goals, with Oakland kicking the go-ahead one with less than three minutes left in the game.

San Diego had a chance, but in typical San Diego fashion this year, Rivers threw an interception to end the game.

The New England Patriots clinched their eighth straight division title, and number 14 in the last 16 years.

It must be nice for Pats fans to play in a division with three sorry teams that can’t be consistent, much less good enough to compete with the Patriots.

New England beat my Broncos. It was typical Denver football this year, great defense, blanket coverage and good pass rush. Brady didn’t even complete a pass in the first quarter. Yet after a muffed punt and a red zone interception, the Broncos only had three points to show for it, and that is the only points they scored all day. If you had told me the Broncos would have held Brady and the Pats to 16 points in Denver, I’d say we win all day.

Savage ended up bringing the Texans back to win the game. So now the Texans have to decide if they want to go back to Osweiler, who has struggled all year and will continue to struggle, or ride with Savage and admit they made a huge mistake with Osweiler.

Four teams have clinched a playoff spot, two in each conference and with only two weeks left, it is going to be a race to the finish to figure out who gets in, and who is left out in the cold.

Oversight must continue until these basic problems are truly fixed • Opening comments for the meeting of the Iowa Legislature’s Health Policy Oversight Committee meeting In Iowa, privatized health care for the poor and severely disabled is moving forward faster, with less planning, than in any other state. This affects the health care of one in six Iowans.

At this meeting of the Iowa Legislature’s Health Policy Oversight Committee, it is our job to ask “How’s it going?”

That is the question we need to keep asking Iowa families and Iowa health care providers.

The answers so far are pretty consistent. Various basic problems continue and aren’t being fixed. Some examples are: • Providers have told us they are not being paid in a timely manner, or are being paid the incorrect amount.

• Many Iowans still can’t get the services they need without jumping through unnecessary administrative hoops.

• Are there STILL problems with prior authorizations? Yes. • Is information from IME and the MCOs still hard to get, inconsistent, or incorrect? Yes. • Are Iowa’s local health care providers paying much more in administration costs? Yes they are, and yet the MCOs responsible for those cost

increases are getting a raise.

Any savings from privatized Medicaid are vaporous at best, especially as the MCOs consistently complain they are losing lots of money.

The right thing to do is to fix these problems. That argument should move us to action, especially when you consider this: Each and every Iowan, except for the wealthiest among us, is just an accident away from needing the long-term health care Medicaid provides.

That’s why intensive, on-going oversight of privatized Medicaid is absolutely essential. That oversight must continue until these serious, recorded, persistent problems are fixed.

Iowans depend on us to ask tough questions, to insist on straight answers, and to make sure the State of Iowa’s efforts result in the most positive health care programs and outcomes possible.

That’s exactly what I hope we can do today.

He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they

went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.

Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.

“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

gether milk, oats and salt. Microwave on high 2 1/2 minutes, or until oats are tender and most liquid is absorbed.

White Pizza Frittata Recipe created by Rachel Cooks on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 35 minutes | Servings: 8 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 large clove garlic, minced 12 ounces frozen spinach, thawed and water pressed out 12 large eggs 1/4 cup skim milk 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves 3/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup minced fresh basil 1/2 cup shredded, part-skim mozzarella cheese Heat oven to 325 F. In oven-safe skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and cook 2 minutes, or until fragrant.

Once garlic is fragrant, add spinach; break up to incorporate and heat.

In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, pepper, oregano, ricotta, Parmesan and basil.

Add egg mixture to skillet, reduce heat to low and cook 1 minute, stirring gently. Move to oven and bake 25-30 minutes, or until eggs are almost completely set.

Carefully remove from oven and add mozzarella. Return to oven and bake until mozzarella is melted, about 5 minutes.

May be served hot, at room temperature or cold.

3/4 cup buckwheat flour 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 3/4 cups lactose-free, 2 percent milk 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups fresh blueberries, plus additional for topping (optional) Syrup (optional) In large bowl, whisk together flours, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In small bowl, beat

eggs then add milk, oil and vanilla; mix well. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix to combine.

Heat griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Using 1/4 measuring cup, pour batter onto griddle. Gently place several blueberries all over surface of pancakes.

Flip pancakes when bubbles start to form around edges and bottoms are golden brown. Cook on other side until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Remove to plate and cover to keep warm.

Top pancakes with additional blueberries and syrup before serving, if desired.

Oats 1 cup 2 percent milk 3/4 cup water 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 cup old-fashioned oats Huevos Rancheros 1/2 cup sweet onion, peeled and chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons light olive oil 1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chilies 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chili powder 2 eggs Kosher salt Black pepper 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring milk, water and salt to boil. Stir in oats. Reduce heat

to medium-low and simmer oats, stirring occasionally, 4 minutes. Remove oats from heat and place lid on saucepan. Set aside.

In nonstick skillet over medium heat, saute onion in olive oil until soft, about 4 minutes. Stir canned tomatoes with green chilies and chipotle chili powder into onions to combine. Continue to heat salsa to boil, about 1 minute. Make two wells in middle of tomato salsa. Crack eggs into wells. Season eggs with salt and pepper, to taste. Cover skillet and poach eggs in salsa to desired doneness; about 3-4 minutes.

Divide oats evenly between two bowls. Spoon eggs and salsa over oats. Serve immediately with cheddar cheese.

The Warhawks, led by Zach Martinekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 24 points, had three players in double-figure scoring as it rolled out to an early lead and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look

Travis Fekkers added 13 and Dawson Zeitler came off of the bench to contribute 12 points in the victory.

Zeitler also led the team in rebounding with seven as the Warhawks out-rebounded the Panthers
