by Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – Santa’s been busy. Not only has he had to go round the world, he has had to spend a lot of time just here in Eldora. Santa and Mrs. who look an awful lot like Eldora’s Tom and Linda Pierson (just coincidentally) had a very busy schedule this year. The retired farm couple, Santa and Mrs., were at the Steamboat Rock breakfasts twice, at the big holiday show and Christmas pageant once, at the courthouse in Eldora in the rotunda, at the Eldora Library just last week, and they were set to go to the New Providence Soda Fount on Tuesday this week. Santa and Mrs. have a Eldora summer home between Steamboat Rock and Eldora, and when they overnight in Eldora, it’s at a residence on 15th Street. The one thing you learn being Santa, he says, is to watch the parents closely. Don’t get caught up in trying to make every child smile, not if you do it at the price of promising something that moms and dad are pleading you deny.

Kids can take disappointment while on Santa’s lap, but they are no good at all come Christmas morning when something scheduled does not show up. Sometimes they ask a lot Like last year, one little girl wanted Santa to promise that every child in the world would get a gift. “I said we try to do our best.” Then a child asked for something even Santa on his best day can’t delivery. The world won’t let him. Peace on earth. Kids do ask for exotic electronics, and Santa admits that once in a while he and Mrs. have to investigate just exactly what the latest gizmos might look like. Santa says he has been at this six years…. he has put on a little weight, and he has always had a beard, which has now turned snow white – so he is in perfect dress for the job. Finally, we think we heard Santa say something about maybe having been part of the graduating class of Eldora 1967? But naw….that couldn’t have been.

“Considering the weather we had a pretty decent turnout,” said Eldora Librarian Dan Gehring, who counted somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 people. Tom and Linda Pierson were conspicuously present there and in the courthouse too. Friends of the Library provided cookies. Everybody had a good time.

An assist for families of those afflicted

Organizers envision new mental health support by Rick Patrie News Editor HARDIN COUNTY – Some enthusiasts for better mental health services in this area are inaugurating a new project addressing not so much the sufferer’s from mental illness, but care givers and family members who are trying to help their loved ones. Recognizing a need to support families of individuals with mental illness, a new support group is forming in Hardin County. Hardin County Families Supporting

Families will begin meeting January 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls. The group will then meet the second Tuesday of each month. A light meal will be provided. The purpose of the group is to provide support, education and advocacy for families and caregivers of persons with mental illness. The group also intends to eventually provide public educational events. For more information call 515689-4262 or contact Hardin County Community Services at 641-939-

8168. Organizers have been pulling the new project together for a couple of months and Cynthia Brown of Iowa Falls has been a key figure in the effort. The initiative comes amid a changing backdrop for mental health services in Iowa. The state and county’s involvement have in the last couple of years adjusted to more and more regionalization of public programs. Hardin County Mental Health Services director Lynn Adams says the new system

sometimes offers opportunities for expanded programs, but there are a lot of misgivings as the changes remove some of the ‘local’ from the service efforts. Meanwhile, Iowa Falls already has one active program under way in that community, where Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the community Friendship Club invites all persons actually suffering from mental illness to come in for some socializing and support. Adams says there are about 40 participants on a semi regular

basis. It is a long-standing project for mental illness sufferers and the meeting spot is just north of the HyVee store in the commercial center on the south side of town. He says the 40 regular attendance numbers at the Friendship Club maybe point to the potential for the Families Supporting Families project, too. The Friendship Club routinely draws in membership from the Eldora and Hubbard communities too, he says.

The story of Christmas

Contributed by Ryan Harvey who heads Mid-America Publishing the parent company of the Eldora Newspapers From time to time as Christmas approaches, I love to pull out one of my sons’ board books and read it to them. The book, written by Joseph Slate entitled “Who is Coming To Our House,” gives a glimpse of what happened in the barn over 2,000 years ago. “Who is coming to our house?” “Someone, someone,” says Mouse. Who is that someone? As Christmas approaches just a few short days ahead I’ll recite Matthew 1:18-2:12 of the New Interna-

tional Version. This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in

her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”--which means, “God with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “’But you,

Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they

had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and

his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are

November unemployment at 3.3 percent DES MOINES – Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent in November. The state’s jobless rate was 3.5 percent one year ago. The U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 4.6 percent in November. “The unemployment rate in Iowa is the lowest since March, which in part is due to holiday hiring and the great fall weather we have had this year,” said Beth Townsend, Director of Iowa Workforce Development. “The economy remains soft as we transition to seasonal unemployment during the winter months.” The number of unemployed Iowans decreased to 65,000 in November from 70,400 in October.

The current estimate is 5,300 higher than the year ago level of 59,700. The total number of working Iowans decreased to 1,655,000 in November. This figure was 200 lower than October and 10,600 higher than one year ago. Seasonally Adjusted Nonfarm Employment Iowa establishments shed 4,700 jobs in November and lowered employment down to 1,580,100 jobs. This drop marked the third straight month for job losses for the state. Private sector losses totaled 3,900 jobs and government pared 800 jobs. Public sector drops were primarily within local government

(-600), although the federal sector shed jobs also (-200). Government trails last year’s level by 1,300 jobs. Private sectors remain up (+11,300), but the magnitude of the annual increase has been waning as the year comes to an end. In November, the largest movement occurred in trade, transportation, and utilities which experienced a decline of 2,300 jobs. The majority of the loss was incurred in retail (-1,400), although transportation, utilities, and wholesale shed jobs this month as well. Iowa’s retail sector has not fared well through 2016 and is down compared to last November (-1,400). Iowa’s manufacturers lost 1,400

jobs with losses distributed evenly between durable and nondurable goods factories. This marks the second straight decline following a brief upsurge in the summer. Other notable losses included other services (-1,200), leisure and hospitality (-500), and information (-200). New Business – Teresa Janssen passed out numbered cards with questions for the gift exchange. Club Collect was read and the meeting was adjourned. The program about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was given by Teresa Janssen who brought a stuffed Rudolph to pass around and informed us this was the 50th anniversary of the movie and 2014 was the 75th anniversary of his character. She had copies of the first Rudolph books from childhood. Due to the anniversary, many Rudolph events were held at places like the Civic Center, NIACC College and a puppet theater in Atlanta. Rudolph was created in 1939 by Robert May in Chicago and published by Montgomery Ward who assigned him to create a booklet as a give away. Johnny Marx adapted the song in 1949 for Gene Autry, which sold 25 million copies and was the 2nd leading Christmas song till the 80’s. A Rudolph fill in the blank challenged everyone while Gene Autry sang his famous song. Santa gave a “surprise” Christmas card to all when he heard we were learning about Rudolph but consoled us by saying there’s still time to get off the naughty list. A white elephant gift exchange/steal created many laughs, surprises and knowledge gained as we answered the questions assigned and opened our “presents”. A delicious dessert of cake, peppermint ice cream, Rudolph pretzels and nuts with cider or coffee was served by Mary Weaver. Arlene gave everyone a Rudolph gift tag as she wished a Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Public Record

Flashback Friday

Taking a look back at local history from previous editions of the Eldora Newspapers. Compiled by Rob Maharry. five years ago this week-2011 • Longtime Hardin County law enforcement veteran Maj. Don Orgel is moving to succeed retiring sheriff Tim Smith, hoping to cap a threedecade career in law enforcement in this area. Orgel, of Eldora, has served three sheriffs and was two years with the Eldora Police Department early on in his career, and was for a short period the only police officer in Hubbard. Orgel graduated from the Eldora schools back in 1967 and served 12 years active duty in the military, infantry and intelligence. • Hardin County farmland joined the northwest quarter of the state in setting the pace for land value increases during 2011. The state set records for values and rates of increase, with experts agreeing much of the reason was commodity prices, and that now land is being seen as an alternative to the stock market. Hardin County farmland was averaging $7,890 an acre according to this year’s annual study done by Iowa State University. Grundy County, a perennial leader in ag land values was up near the top again with estimates of $8,461 an acre. 10 years ago this week-2006 • Something as unremarkable as a classroom can literally be life or death in some unlucky parts of the world. Dave Rubow’s association with Rotary recently took him to a place much like that, and because Rubow’s business back in Eldora is being meticulous about keeping records, Eldora Rotarians will find plenty to be amazed at in his record of the beauty of the central American landscape and the struggle that’s life in northwest Nicaragua. Along the way he got a firsthand look at what Rotarians in Eldora and beyond have been doing to make the future a little more hopeful there. • Even as the community held its annual Christmas events not long ago, Conrad mourned the passing of a woman who had all but been the face of community betterment and all its related activities. Every Christmas city hall in Conrad becomes a showcase of various groups in this town who decorate a tree. This year one more commemorative was added, as a thank you to Lynn Zern, 13 years the one and only paid staffer on the community betterment organization. She has been the face of Conrad’s busy Main Street project. It is a fairly encompassing project, and Zern, who died in November, had coordinated its far-flung activities. 25 years ago this week- 1991 • City officials were informed recently that Eldora has been approved to receive a $42,886 grant for its housing construction program from the Iowa Finance Authority. These funds will be utilized in conjunction with the new homes being constructed through a special program as a part of the Eldora Area Chamber and Development Council. The grant is for use in construction of single family homes, with a limit of $5,000 per home. The Iowa Finance Authority feels the grant will enable Eldora to construct eight single family dwellings for low and moderate income families in the community. • No doubt about it, we should

consider ourselves fortunate to be residing in Eldora and in Hardin County, especially in light of the recent scandal with the Iowa Trust. Only one community in the county had funds invested in the Iowa Trust, which found all of its assets frozen—to the tune of about $1.6 billion as investigations into the system continue. Radcliffe had invested $25,000 of its reserves in the Iowa Trust, which was promising higher interest rates to communities and counties willing to invest their idle funds in them. Hardin County did not invest any funds with the Iowa Trust, nor did the city of Eldora. There were other municipalities around this area, however, who did and are struggling to make payroll payments to their employees this week. • State Auditor Richard Johnson this week released a report of special investigation on the City of Alden. The investigation was performed after determining that certain collections were not deposited into the city’s bank accounts and were not recorded in the city’s accounting records. In this report, Johnson identified $7,074.34 that has been misappropriated from the city. This amount is supported by receipts issued by the former city clerk and paid utility stubs brought in by customers which were not deposited in the city’s bank account or posted to the city’s general ledger or utility payment records and by certain customer account balance adjustments reflected in the city’s utility billing and payment history records. 50 years ago this week- 1966 • Architectural plans were approved Thursday for a $375,000 addition to the Health Center at the Iowa Training School for Boys in Eldora. Bid forms are expected to be ready by February 15, 1967, with groundbreaking tentatively scheduled for March or April, weather permitting. The building should be ready for occupancy by late spring of 1968. The State Board of Control earlier approved funds for the project. The addition, measuring 150 feet east to west and 50 feet north to south, will be attached by a 60-foot ramp to the southwest corner of the Health Center building on the north side of the road. The two-story building will house a clinic on the main floor and offices and a general purpose room on the lower floor. The clinic will include a 14-bed infirmary, dental and medical facilities, teaching laboratory and diet kitchen. • Right-of-way for the proposed freeway access across Hardin County east and west is to start in 1969, according to the Five Year Primary Road Construction Program released Wednesday at noon by the State Highway Commission. The four-lane superhighway would be a part of the new Highway 20 between Dubuque and Sioux City, which will also provide Waterloo with a link to the new northsouth Interstate 35. Although the exact route of the highway is not certain, the four-lane road, as outlined in the Five-Year Program, would run across the county in an east-west direction. From the west, it would be located just north of Buckeye, and on the east side of the county would be located just north of Steamboat Rock and north of Wellsburg in Grundy County.

We were just dominated physically,” stated South Hardin co-coach Mile Olson. Denver-Tripoli posted nine pins and a major decision with six of the falls in the first-period. The Storm’s 24 points were pins for Ian Showers at 113 pounds in 27-seconds, 160-pounder Ryland Duchane in 3:50 and Dylan Wenke at 195 in 34-ticks, along with a forfeit for Owen Fuller at 182. Duchane ended the lone SHBCLUW wrestler to go 2-0, scoring a fall in four-minutes against Wapsie. Teammates scoring were Taylor Kolthoff at 106-pounds with a fall in 3:39 and Hunter at 120 posting a pin in 5:05. Wapsie Valley’s win list counted 10 pins and a win.

DOUBLE WINNERSenior 160-pounder Ryland Duchane was the lone double winner during the South HardinBCLUW wrestling team’s conference bouts with state-ranked Denver-Tripoli and Wapsie Valley Tuesday.

SCORING ISSUES Scoring issues continued for the BCLUW boys, dropping a 23-point decision in Tuesday’s nightcap. The Comets, 1-5 with the loss, have been checked to 39 or less points four times. The victory was the Sailors’ first in five games. “The game came down to missed opportunities. We had a lot of close looks around the run that did not fall. We tend to get down on ourselves when this happens,” said BCLUW coach Luke Higgins. Troy Dolphin’s 10 points led the Comets with eight for Logan Mann and Clay Silver five. Silver was credited with seven rebounds and Dolphin six. “We are going to work on being tougher during bad situations during the break. It will also be a time to figure out who we are as a team and who is ready to meet the challenges we will face in the later part of the season,” Higgins noted. BCLUW is back in action with a JV-varsity boys against BGM in Conrad Thursday, Jan. 5 and then both the boys and girls play G-R in Reinbeck Friday, Jan. 6.

Storm 132-pounder Josiah Dorow suffered both decision losses. Wapsie’s Connor Brandt edged Dorow, 3-2 with a late escape for his third of the match. Dorow was beaten 13-4 by Denver’s Riley Wright, thirdranked at 126, but went the entire six-minutes. Denver-Tripoli and Wapsie Valley also were winners over Hudson – D-T 57-21 and WV 57-20 and both improved to 7-0 in the conference. South Hardin-BCLUW returns to the mat with a double dual at Hudson against Dike-New Hartford and the host Pirates Thursday, Jan. 5. SH-BCLUW will then host the eight-team Storm Duals in Conrad Saturday, Jan. 7.

West Marshall hands lopsided losses to South Hardin cagers by Scott Bierle Sports Editor ELDORA- Lopsided losses were suffered by the South Hardin girls’ and boys’ basketball teams during North Iowa Cedar League West Conference play here Tuesday. West Marshall did the damage as the state-ranked WM girls buried South Hardin, 69-26 and the Trojans toppled the Tigers, 55-33. The games were make-ups from the weather postponements of last Friday and wrapped-up the pre-holiday campaign for South Hardin. SHUTOUT IN FIRST QTR The South Hardin girls were knocked down early and never recovered. West Marshall, 10thranked in Class 3A, built a 19-0 lead after the first quarter and led 37-10 at halftime. The Tigers’ Nina Priske tallied the team’s one field goal in the opening 16 minutes to go with eight free throws in 17 attempts.

“We knew coming in West Marshall plays a physical, aggressive game. Our girls don’t like that physical game and we didn’t react,” said South Hardin coach Matt Thompson. West Marshall buried 10 threepoint goals with eight in the first half. Isabelle Gradwell, the league’s leading scorer at nearly 20-points per game, hit six triples in all with four before the break and finished with a game-high 10 points. Kayla Cripps added three treys and had 14 points, and Brooke Snider had 13 with one three-ball. Gradwell also had seven rebounds, four assists and four blocks, while Shannon Breja had six of the winner’s 16 steals. Reserve Kiera Anderson led the Tigers’ scoring at 10 points with Priske eight. The hosts ended 5-of44 on field goals (11 percent) and 15-of-26 on free throws. Miquela Teske had five rebounds and three

steals. Up 37-10 at the break, West Marshall had scoring sprees of nine-in-arow to start the second half and later 13-0 to take the quarter 22-4. The game’s final 13 minutes were played with a continuous clock. The loss was the first in league play for the Tigers to stand 3-1 and 5-4 overall. The Trojans are an unbeaten 7-0 and 5-0 in the conference. Scoring by Quarters: West Marshall 19 18 22 10 -69 South Hardin 0 10 4 12 -26 South Hardin scoring – Kiera anderson 10, Nina priske 8, Danae Nelson 4, emma gourley 2, Miquela Teske 1, paige Harrell 1.

SKID REACHES 5 STRAIGHT The South Hardin boys will take a five-game losing skid into the break after the 22-point loss in Tuesday’s nightcap. The Tigers stand 1-3 in the conference and 1-7 overall. West Marshall gained control early, building a 19-6 advantage after eight minutes. After a basket by the Tigers’ Ty Cook started the game’s scoring, the Trojans tallied the next 10 points and closed the first period on a 9-2 run with three triples, two by Cameron Bannister and a buzzerbeater by Beau Coberley. “We are a second late on everything – offense and defense. We just are not reacting quick enough,” South Hardin coach Adam Weig stated. “We knew West Marshall would play a 2-3 zone and we just settled for reversing the ball outside. We

didn’t penetrate the gaps. It is not an effort thing, this team just needs more playing time together,” added Weig. The Tigers behind Ted Dunn closed the gap to 31-20 at the 2:22 mark of the third quarter. Dunn hit two three-pointers around a two-ball for a quick 8-0 spurt. West Marshall answered with a 15-1 run to end the third and begin the fourth with another two threes for Bannister. Dunn had 11 points with three bombs and was the lone Tiger in double digits. Dane Butler and Kevin Rewoldt had six points each and Cade Spieker five. The 33-point output was a seasonlow for the Tigers and third time at sub-40. Bannister’s 12 points led a balanced WM attack with 11 for Mark Van Metre, eight for David Disney and Cole Baccam, and seven for Coberley. The Trojans have won four-in-a-row after starting the season 0-4 and are 3-2 in the league. The South Hardin boys are back on the court Tuesday (Jan. 3) against Iowa Falls-Alden in Eldora for a JV-varsity doubleheader. Both Tiger teams then go to Grundy Center Friday, Jan. 6. Scoring by Quarters: West Marshall 19 9 8 19 -55 South Hardin 6 6 8 13 -33 South Hardin scoring – Ted Dunn 11, Dane Butler 6, Kevin Rewoldt 6, Cade Spieker 5, Ty Cook 2, aaron Nederhoff 2, Layne Nelson 1. Eagles outscored 95-85 by DMACC

BOONE- The Quakerdale Prep basketball team was defeated by DMACC, 95-85 here last Thursday to wrap-up the Eagles’ pre-holiday campaign. A game-high 28 points by Antoine Divine headlined the Quakerdale performance. Mahrion Butler and Chase White were teammates in double digits at 18 and 13, respectively. Tyrees Sidberry and Andrew Madison added six points, Naa’il Mahdi five, Chris Porter four, Tyrail Trussell three and Jerry Boyd two. The Eagles made 17-of-25 free throws with Divine at 11-of-13, and sank 10-of-18 three-point goals with three for White and two for Butler, who had eight rebounds and four assists. Game time is 7 p.m.

by Scott Bierle Sports Editor TAMA- The unbeaten campaigns continued for the AGWSR girls’ and boys’ basketball teams with a sweep of Meskwaki here Monday. The Cougar cagers led from startto-finish to win by scores of 62-37 for the girls and 66-25 for the boys. COUGARS COAST The AGWSR boys filled the basket early and often, leaping to leads of 22-9 after one quarter and 40-14 at halftime, and improved to 5-0 on the season. The Cougars sank six three-point goals and four of those in the first period – three for Alex Hames and one by Nathan Karsjens and coasted past the hosts. Karsjens netted a gamehigh 14 points with 13 for Hames and teammate Mason Eilderts. Tate Hofmeister added eight points, Jay Janssen seven and Ethan Ubben six. Janssen picked six rebounds with five for Karsjens, while Eilderts had seven assists, five boards and three steals.

“I’m happy with the way the guys came ready to play after some time off with the weather,” said AGWSR coach Russ Banzhaf. “We had good balance in the scoring and the defense played well again.” Karsjens’ output left the senior four points shy of the 1,000 point mark. AGWSR played Wapsie Valley at Fairbank Thursday to close the pre-holiday schedule. For Meskwaki (2-5), Tate Bear tallied 12 of the team’s 25 points.
