Eldora sends an elector

Polly Granzow By Rick Patrie News Editor ELDORA – She got a ringside seat for the finale of an election that was one without the like of itself in as long as anyone could remember. Eldoran and long time Republican officeholder at the state and county level, Polly Granzow, was one of six on the Electoral College team that met in Des Moines a few days ago and certified Iowa’s votes for President-elect Donald Trump. The Electoral College has long been an institution operating under the national radar – until the last decade and a half. It got some light thrown on it when George Bush took the presidency, though actually coming in a very close half million votes behind in the popular vote. This time around Presidentelect Trump’s popular vote was behind more like three million.

And presumably because of that, the experience of being an ‘elector’ became much different than anything seen in a century and a half. Granzow, for a few days, was inundated with pleas, primarily from the West Coast and the Northeast of the country, supporters of Hillary Clinton “or anyone but Mr. Trump” pleading the elector walk back on a commitment to vote for the popular vote winner in this particular state. Granzow never had any intention of obliging she said, but it was still quite an education. Granzow was named one of two at large electors for Iowa at the State Republican Convention in Des Moines last May. There were 2500 in attendance, so being one of two was quite a distinction. She says she did semi-campaign for the honor, called in some credits with party delegates with whom she had established personal ties over her years in the Iowa Legislature and party politics. Granzow said when the college convened in the statehouse last week, the Governor did the honors in introductions and then Secretary of State Paul Pate gave the six electors and the assembled press and dignitaries a history and backgrounder on the college. Voting was pretty nondescript, on a sheet of paper, their six signatures attesting the outcome. Before the vote she had receive a wave of emails, letters and phone contacts and trying to sway a vote from Mr. Trump. Pate accepted and officially (continued on page 3)

SHMS students make Christmas extra special for family in need

By: Rob Maharry Staff writer HUBBARD- It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be the toughest time of the year for families and individuals struggling to make ends meet financially. Realizing this, a group of students at South Hardin Middle School went the extra mile to help those in need with a recent fundraiser that ended with a shopping trip to Ames and wrapping gifts on Wednesday afternoon. To raise money, students first sold candy canes (which netted $551), then charged a dollar for hat day and pajama day. A teacher stepped in to sell some sports cards, and private donations flowed in until the total amount raised was over $1,000. Because the primary family that the students chose to help is here in the community, they know that the donations are staying local, and they still had leftover funds to donate to local food pantries. “It’s better to give than to receive. Around the holidays, not everyone has as much as we do, so it’s better to give back to the community, to the families that really need it,” said middle schooler Sawyer Higgeson.

on trail project

By: Rob Maharry Staff Writer ELDORA - Local spokesman Chris Wieting addressed the Hardin County Board of Supervisors about some year end business and overall progress related to the Iowa River Trail running from Steamboat Rock to Marshalltown during the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday morning. One noticeable difference in 2017 will be the name of the trails group: Wieting announced that it will be changed from the Hardin County Trail Commission to the Iowa River Trail- Hardin Commission (IRTH), primarily to avoid confusion with a group in Iowa Falls named Hardin County Trails. Also, supervisor Ronn Rickels, who previously served as the liaison between the board and the trails group, was not re-elected, so Renee McClellan will take over his position at the start of the new year. According to Wieting, the group’s expenditures in 2016 were $3,561.44, mostly for maintenance and small advertising costs, and the commission applied for five grants but only received one, a $22,000 Barlow Family Foundation Challenge grant. They also received $25,000 in private donations from 270 different donors, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation received $31,000 that will be shared

with Marshall County, where the trail ends. The commission also plans to use grant money to repair seven bridges along the trail between Steamboat Rock and Gifford, and they are hoping for a rough opening next year (it is still technically closed to the public) while gradually paving more of it in the future. “Going into 2017, we feel that we’re in good shape,” Wieting said. “Getting this as a usable trail in the near future (is our goal).” Scott Kosanke, Eric Nielsen, Lynnette Miller and Emily Herring will be departing from the commission board at the end of the year, and new members joining are Mona Bleeker of Steamboat Rock, Adam Nederhoff of Iowa Falls and Joe Herring of Eldora. Wieting commented that paving the trail will be a long-term, 15 to 20 year project, but he hopes to have the trail paved from Steamboat Rock to Pine Lake State Park in the next five years, which would create a loop for riders and travellers along the trail. IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board: • Tabled action on possibly trading in or selling a county truck. • Set the 2017 organizational meeting for Tuesday, January 3. • Approved a joint mental health advocate agreement with Marshall County. • Approved four changes of status in the county sheriff’s office.

Election (continued from page 1) certified the ballots cast by the State of Iowa’s presidential electors Monday. All of the electors cast their ballots for Donald Trump for president and Mike Pence for vicepresident during a ceremony at the State Capitol. Their votes ensure that all six of Iowa’s electoral votes will go to the Trump-Pence ticket. More than 1.58 million Iowa voters cast their ballot in the November 2016 general election. They selected Trump-Pence over Clinton-Kaine, 50.6%-41.3%. “I want to thank the electors for their service. There was a lot of pressure

put on the electors, with emails, mailings and phone calls, trying to convince them to vote other than the way the people of Iowa decided,” Secretary Pate said. “I appreciate them stepping up to participate in this process and for fulfilling their civic duty.” Granzow was a long time schoolteacher in Hardin County and also served two terms as Hardin County supervisor and three terms representing the 44th District in the Iowa House. The six electors from Iowa come by virtue of four house and

two Senate members in the Iowa delegation. Electoral College is made up of 538 electors who cast votes to decide the President and Vice-President of the United States. When voters go to the polls they actually choose which candidate receives their state’s electors. The candidate who receives a majority of electoral votes (270) wins the Presidency. The number 538 is the sum of the nation’s 435 Representatives, 100 Senators, and 3 electors given to the District of Columbia. In all but two states, the candidate who wins the majority of votes in a state wins that state’s electoral votes. In Nebraska and Maine, electoral votes are assigned by proportional representation, meaning that the top vote getter in those states wins two electoral votes (for the two Senators) while the remaining electoral votes are allocated congressional district by congressional district. These rules make it possible for both candidates to receive electoral votes from Nebraska and Maine, unlike the winner-take-all system in the other 48 states. The process for naming the electors varies from state to state. Usually, political parties nominate electors at their state conventions. Here in Iowa it is a combination of state and district conventions. Polly Granzow, for instance, was named at the State convention where two at large electors are chose. Before that each of the Congressional Districts made choices to bring the total to six electors for Iowa. Sometimes in other states the process occurs by a vote of the party’s central committee. The electors are usually state-elected officials, party leaders, or people with a strong affiliation with the Presidential candidates. Neither the Constitution nor Federal election laws compel electors to vote for their party’s candidate. That said, twentyseven states have laws on the books that require electors to vote for their party’s candidate if that candidate gets a majority of the state’s popular vote. In 24 states, no such laws apply, but common practice is for electors to vote for their party’s nominee.

Hubbard Clinic project picks up key fundraising boost by Rick Patrie News Editor HUBBARD – The fundraising got another big booste from the local Rural Electric Cooperative. (See page 1) The campiagn now a year old toward construction of the new medical clinic in Hubbard. Earlier last fall organizers were saying hopes were that maybe by spring the fundraising will have been a success and work can start on the new Hubbard Community Health Clinic. The community is saying goodbye to the old clinic and says, though it’s served the community well, it has simply aged out. The 1960’s structure just doesn’t accommodate the newer wrinkles found in health care offices. The Hubbard Medical Center Board found that remodeling would

ReC contributes to the project require the closing of the clinic for several months and a conceivable remodel still wouldn’t solve the problem of lack of space. Add to that, the cost of remodeling was almost as much as new construction, they said. The furnace and air-conditioning unit were in need of replacement and the wiring was insufficient to meet the current technological demands. The building today is on a concrete slab and all the wiring has to pass through the ceiling space. Presently all the rooms, including the bathroom, are not handicap accessible. Cosmetic updates had kept the building looking attractive, but the medical clinic is in need of additional room and major remodeling. Looking far down the road into the future, the current building would not be suitable

to attract a new medical provider to the area and would not meet state codes for a hospital affiliated provider. With those challenges in mind, The Hubbard Medical Center Board decided to build new near the Hubbard Care Center campus, on a parcel offered by the care center. The new clinic would be adjacent, though not connected to the care center, approximately 3,700 square feet. The current clinic is about 2,200 square feet. The new facility will have 4 exam rooms, two offices, a laboratory and a consultation room. Lots of added storage. Plan is to have the care center and clinic buildings complement each other and the placement insures that Medical services will be a few steps away from the Care Center. The Hubbard Medical Center Board and The Hubbard Care Center Board have met jointly numerous

times over the past three years. The Hubbard Care Center will also be building a new addition to their facility that will provide a Physical Therapy room and an activity room of approximately 3500 square feet. Last fall when the fundraising kicked off, administrator, Angie Bruns noted that the care center’s physical therapy offering is provided not only to care center residents, but to the community at large on an outpatient basis as well. The activity room will provide much needed space for residents to have arts and crafts, a gathering place for piano and singing activities along with a wide variety of programs that are so enjoyable to residents and provides needed social interaction. The front room has provided dual space for activities and programs and a living room space for residents and visitors to watch TV since the care center was built in 1996. Preliminary estimates were $800,000 to construct a new Hubbard Medical Center. Currently the Hubbard Medical Center provides health care to approximately 3,000 patients. Linda Gehrke, ARNP has been the health care provider looks forward to working out of the new center. Board Members of the Hubbard Community Medical Center Inc. include Cheri Boelman, Richard Dreifke, Jim Granzow, Kay Held, Denise Martin, Marvin Nygaard, Tricia Ackerman. Steve Mannetter is the campaign director.

PLSP hosting Jan. 1 Hike

DES MOINES- Free, guided hikes will take place in 25 Iowa state parks on New Year’s Day as part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes initiative. All 50 states will participate in the sixth annual national event that encourages everyone to celebrate the New Year with a guided outdoor exploration. “We are excited to host First Day Hikes again as part of this effort to get people outdoors and into our parks, said Todd Coffelt, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources State Parks Bureau. “These hikes are a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family. Last year, more than 600 people began the year in an Iowa state park, hiking more than 1,100 total miles. “And we had participants ranging in age from eight weeks to 80-plus years, adds Coffelt. Hikers can expect to be surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature in winter, and experience spectacular views, beautiful settings and the cultural treasures offered by Iowa’s state parks. Staff and volunteers will lead First Day Hikes in Iowa’s 25 participating state parks. Hikes will average one to two miles or longer depending on the location. Details about the hikes can be found at www.iowadnr. gov/firstdayhikes and to see a comprehensive map of First Day Hikes across the country, visit stateparks. org. Participants are encouraged to share their adventures on social media with #FirstDayHikes. Iowa First Day Hikes will take place at the following times at these 25 state parks: “America’s state parks provide havens for young and old alike to explore the beauty and serenity of nature through outdoor recreation, says Lewis Ledford, Executive Director of the National Association of State Park Directors. “Hiking offers inspiring ways to improve your physical and mental health, while discovering beautiful public lands in every state. Last year, more than 55,000 people participated on guided hikes that covered over 133,000 miles on 1,100 hikes across the country.

Ice safety reminder as Iowa lakes freeze over

DES MOINES- The recent blast of arctic air is growing ice on lakes and ponds over much of Iowa and sending anglers out for the popular early ice fishing of the season. “Ice fishing is one of our great winter sports. It is a fun, social activity best enjoyed with a group of friends, said Joe Larscheid, chief of fisheries for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Anglers heading out are reminded to check the ice often as they make their way to their favorite fishing spot. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends a minimum of four inches of quality ice for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs. “Check ice thickness as you go out. Ice thickness is not uniform on anybody of water. There could be pockets of thin ice or places where the geese had kept ice from forming, Larscheid said. Early ice offers an excellent chance for success. If fish are finicky, plan to cut a series of holes and spend 15 minutes at each hole targeting active fish. Use small baits and light line. “Now that we have ice, we need to go through our mental safety check list. Go with a friend and be sure to cut some test holes to check ice

thickness as you go out, Larscheid said. Safety Tips on the Ice - There is no such thing as 100

percent safe ice. - New ice is usually strong than old ice. - Ice fishing is a social activ-

ity, don’t go out alone. If the worst should happen, someone would be there to call for help or to rescue. - There could be pockets of thin ice

or places where ice recently formed, so check ice thickness as you go out. - Avoid off-colored snow or ice. It is usually a sign of weakness.
