Christmas decorations highlight Aurelia council agenda In a rather mundane council meeting, the Aurelia City Council began discussions on upgrading the city’s Christmas decorations at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20. The council selected a committee of City Clerk Barb Messerole and councilwoman Sue Johnson to begin the process of selecting up to three alternatives to bring back to the council for consideration. Once narrowed down, the council will then ask patrons to pick their favorite. In all the community will need 19 new decorations to be hung in the downtown business area.
In other business: - the council visited briefly with Ryan Harvey, president and CEO of Mid-America Publishing Corporation. Harvey represented the company who recently purchased the Aurelia Star. - the council appointed Michelle Swanson of 408 Spruce St., Aurelia, as the new member of the planning and zoning board. - the council heard about a Nov. 23 complaint from Michelle Shriver regarding nails in the street on Beech Street. She believed it was due to the city’s removal of a vacant house in Aurelia. The city dismissed the complaint.
- the council approved the new slate of officers at the fire department. - the council heard updates from the public works and police department. - the council set Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. as the time for its budget workshop. - the council agreed to hold a public hearing with regards to the landfill agreement with Cherokee County. The agreement would reduce the bonds to 2.32 percent. Currently the bonds stand at more than 4 percent. The cost savings would be in excess of $500,000 per year.
Cherokee SWCD scholarship applications available The Cherokee Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is now accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors residing in Cherokee County who will be pursuing programs of study in any field of conservation or agriculture. CRMC community health needs Winter parking assessment report available reminders During 2016, Cherokee Regional Medical Center (CRMC) conducted a community health needs assessment (CHNA) to support its mission to provide high quality, patient-centered health care. The assessment was also completed to comply with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and federal tax-exemption requirements and to identify health needs of the community to help prioritize the allocation of hospital resources to meet those needs. CRMC also utilized the 2015 CHNA conducted by CRMC Public Health for Cherokee County. On Dec. 19, the Cherokee Regional Medical Center Board of Directors approved the 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment Report. Anyone interested in read-
ing the report may visit the CRMC website at www.cherokeermc.org. Individuals can then easily access, download, view and print a hard copy of the CHNA report without fee. This CHNA Report will remain on the CRMC website until two subsequent CHNA reports have been posted, so information on trends will continue to be available to the public. In addition, CRMC will make a paper copy of this report and subsequent reports available for public inspection without charge upon request at administration on second floor of the hospital. If anyone has any questions regarding the 2016 CHNA or previous reports, feel free to contact CRMC Administration at 712-225-1505.

AURELIA DAYCARE FAMILY OF THE WEEK “We used to drive to Cherokee every day for daycare and then started utilizing the Aurelia Day Care which was so convenient for our family since both my husband and I work in Aurelia. The Aurelia Day Care means the world to us as the staff cares for the most precious things in our life. It's a safe place where our kids get to play and learn! Being so close to the school has been a huge advantage as well! We have been attending the Aurelia Daycare for several years and we are excited about the new building. The kids will have more space and the rooms will be developmentally appropriate! We have enjoyed watching the daycare expand and look forward to its continued success!" In Buena Vista County–
Confinement site manure applicator training Confinement site manure applicators should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to maintain or renew their confinement site manure applicator certification. The Buena Vista County workshop will be offered on January 6 at 1:30 in the Storm Lake Extension and Outreach office at 824 Flindt Drive. Call to pre-register at 712-732-5056. There is no cost to attend scheduled manure workshops. “Iowa law requires confinement site manure applicators to attend two hours of continuing education each year of their three-year certification period, or take and pass the exam once every three years,” said Dan Andersen, assistant professor, ISU Ag and Biosystems Engineering and coordinator of the manure applicator certification program. “If applicators fail to attend the two hours of continuing education each year, they will be required to pass a written exam to be eligible to recertify.”
Each year nearly 200 confinement site applicators fail to attend training and must pass the remedial exam prior to being eligible to renew their certification for the following year. The workshop serves as initial certification for those applicators that are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses and as continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license. The 2017 confinement site program will include rules for applicators as well as land-application and setback distance requirements, water quality and applying manure into cover crops, and application equipment uniformity. Operators must be certified to handle, transport, and apply manure if the confinement livestock operation has more than a 500 animal unit capacity unless the manure is applied by a commercial manure applicator. The certification fee is for a three-year certificate. This fee is paid to Iowa Department of Natural Resources
Blood donors needed year-round When Christmas ends, don’t let your generosity end, too. Blood donors are needed year-round, not just during the holiday season. Ninety percent of the American population experiences the need for blood at some point in their lifetime. Because only 10 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood, regular donors are needed constantly. A regular blood donor can give their lifesaving gift every 56 days. It’s not too late to start giving. You can save lives at a community blood drive near you. Marcus Community blood drive, Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Holy Name Church, 100 S. when applicators initially get certified and then every three years when they re-certify to apply manure. Confinement site applicators are also required to pay an annual education fee. All fees and application forms must be sent to Iowa Department of Natural Resources to complete certification requirements. ISU Extension and Outreach will charge a fee per applicator choosing to view the certification materials on a non-scheduled reshow day at the county office. For this reason, all applicators are encouraged to attend the workshops or plan to view training materials on the scheduled reshow date at their local county extension office. The fee will not apply to workshops or regularly scheduled reshow dates. Contact the county extension office to determine which days are scheduled for the manure applicator certification programs in your area. For reshows in Buena Vista County you must call to pre-register at 712-732-5056. Applicators have another option for certification; online certification, which an applicator can take their training on-line at DNR MAC eLearning site at https:// elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign-in and get an A&A account. Applicators are encouraged to complete certification requirements annually prior to March 1 to meet certification deadlines and avoid being assessed a late fee for re-certification. For more information about meeting dates and locations, or to schedule an appointment to attend training, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach Buena Vista County office at 712-732-5056 or visit http://www.agronext. iastate.edu/immag/certification/ confinementsitebrochure.pdf to see the 2017 workshop schedule.

Live with purpose Being physically fit, eating nutritious foods and getting enough rest are important, but not enough to make people truly satisfied with life. Purpose is the number one factor in living a fulfilled life, says Dr. David Brown, human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “Living a purposeful life means being intentional about living out our unique purpose through our social, financial and community connections, said Dr. Brown, who specializes in family life issues. According to Gallup research by Tom Rath and Jim Harter, the five essential elements of well-being are a sense of purpose, a positive social network, financial stability and security, physical health and a reservoir of community resources and connections. Richard Leider with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing, states that purpose is a combination of a person’s gifts, passions and values. “You can express your sense of purpose through a job or career, or through volunteer roles within a community. When we use our natural talents and skills – the things we are good at and love to do – then we bring the gift of joy and happiness to others as well as ourselves. Our passions guide our goals and reveal where we direct our energy. Our values are the underlying driving force about what really matters to us, Brown said. People who live with a sense of purpose live longer, have a higher quality of life and are better able to adapt to challenges they face in
life. “Ask your friends and family to name something you are good at. How would they describe you? What gets you out of bed in the morning? Is there an activity or role in which you lose all sense of time? That makes you feel rejuvenated or ‘in the flow’ when you do it? These are clues to finding your gifts, passions and values. “Our purpose is unique to each of us. When you discover those threads, notice how they influence your attitude and sense of accomplishment in your daily life. Dr. Brown offers the following tips for living with purpose. Be intentional about doing things that allow you to express your gifts, passions and values. Build energizing activities into your daily routine. That could include spending time with others who share similar passions or offering your gifts to others for whom that task is difficult. Invest time, money and other resources on those things that fulfill your purpose and also fill a need in the larger community. Having a sense of purpose is closely related to social wellbeing. ISU Extension and Outreach will offer “What About Me? My Wellbeing, an educational workshop series in 2017. Human sciences specialists also offer healthy relationship education classes to professionals and individuals. For more information about living a fulfilled life through healthy relationships, visit the Human Sciences Extension and Outreach website, http://www.extension. iastate.edu/humansciences/.
Beef checkoff referendum results certified The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship certified the results from the referendum held Nov. 30 to reinstate the $.50 per head Iowa beef checkoff. Collection of the checkoff will begin March 1. The certified results show the referendum passed with 56 percent of the more than 1,700 producers that voted favoring the reinstatement of the assessment. A simple majority was needed to pass the referendum. The Iowa beef checkoff will be mandatory, but refunds will be available to interested producers. The federal beef checkoff of $1 per head remains in place and would not be affected by the Iowa vote. A petition to vote on the state
beef checkoff was delivered to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship on Sept. 2 by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. The petition contained more than 500 signatures of cattle producers in the state of Iowa who are interested in a referendum. For information about the beef checkoff and beef checkoff programs, contact the Iowa Beef Industry Council at (515) 296-2305 or emailbeef@iabeef.org. In accordance with Chapter 181 of the Iowa Code, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is responsible for holding beef checkoff referendum votes. All costs incurred by the Department will be reimbursed by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

Commercial manure applicator training registration deadline Commercial manure applicators should plan to attend the Commercial Manure Applicator training program scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will conduct the required three-hour training workshop at that time. There is no fee to attend the workshop, but commercial applicators must register by Dec. 28 by contacting the ISU Extension and Outreach Buena Vista County office at 712-732-5056. Commercial manure applicators needing to recertify and those wanting to certify for the first time should attend. The workshop will provide the required three hours of annual training and will cover rules for applicators as well as land-application requirements, water sources, reading and using a MMPs, manure application uniformity, equipment transport, injector options, biosecurity and manure and hydrogen sulfide safety. All currently certified commercial manure applicator licenses will expire on March 1.
Commercial applicators can attend training throughout the year, but if they were previously certified, they should plan to attend training and submit the forms and fees to DNR prior to March 1, to avoid paying the late fees. Certification fees for commercial manure applicators have not changed for 2017. ISU Extension and Outreach will charge a fee to applicators choosing to view the certification materials on a non-scheduled reshow day at the county office. For this reason, all applicators are encouraged to attend the workshops or to plan to view training materials on the scheduled reshow date at their local county extension office. The fee will not apply to workshops or scheduled reshow dates. Please contact your county Extension offices to determine which days are scheduled for the manure applicator certification programs. Due to scheduling conflicts, many county extension offices will no longer accept walk-in appointments to watch the training DVDs. If attending the Jan. 5 commercial manure applicator program or watching the three-hour
DVD is not convenient, commercial applicators may contact their local DNR field office to schedule an appointment to take the certification exam. In addition to needing an appointment to take the exam, applicators must bring a pencil and photo i.d., and should plan to bring a calculator. Applicators have another option, online certification, which an applicator can take their training online at DNR MAC eLearning site at https://elearning-dnr.iowa.gov/. The applicator will need to sign-in and get an A&A account. Commercial manure applicators hauling, handling or land-applying primarily dry or solid manure are encouraged to attend the dry manure applicator workshops scheduled for February 2017. Dates and locations can be found in the link below. For more information about the commercial applicator program contact the ISU Extension and Outreach Buena Vista County office at 712732-5056 or access a list of the training locations at: http://www.agronext.iastate.edu/immag/certification/macprogrampostcard.pdf.

BVU receives grant for digital media program Buena Vista University’s (BVU) digital media program recently received a $1 million grant from a longtime BVU supporter to upgrade the department’s University Cable Network (UCN) Studios. The new equipment was installed in early fall and replaced the studio’s analog television and
video equipment with digital technology. Though students have always had the ability to produce multi-camera productions from six different locations across campus, the new cameras are now up to current industry standards and shoot in high definition. While a great deal of the grant
went to equipment upgrades, the gift was also given to establish an endowment that will perpetually support future technology updates. Students from across disciplines have access to UCN Studios and full television productions are often collaborative.

Mollring began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Kearney (UN-K) from 2007-08. He then became the team’s wide receiver coach and coached four all-conference selections in just two years. Mollring earned his bachelor’s degree in world civilizations and middle school education in 2003 from UNK and went on to serve three years as a teacher and coach at Eustis-Farnam High School, in Eustis, Neb., before moving onto the college ranks. He later received his master’s degree in physical education pedagogy from UNK in 2010. Mollring and his wife, Mandi, have one son, Turner.
