(Editor’s Note: As is our custom at the Herald, at the end of each year we review the top news stories and events of the year. This week we are looking at events that occurred in January, February and March of 2016.) January After over twenty years of employment, first with Citizens State Bank and most recently with Fidelity Bank and Trust, Barb Burns has officially retired. Although she was off following an automobile accident, her actual retirement date was Dec. 31. The students at Postville High School created a video, “We are Postville” to showcase the District and its students. The familiar Russett Real Estate signs that have appeared around Postville and Monona will be replaced with blue Allen Real Estate signs as Steve Russett has transferred his business to his associate Nathan Trappe. it a tradition to spread extra holiday cheer each holiday season. Keeping it local, each of Luana’s five locations makes a donation to a local organization that contributes to the betterment of their communities. This year the bank’s Luana office chose to help out the Postville YMCA’s December fundraising efforts by contributing $500 to the organization. Luana Savings Bank staff members were excited to support the “values driven” organization that provides support for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The YMCA Mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that help build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. A Luana Savings Bank member commented on the YMCA’s core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility, noting that this is a great kind of organization to support not only during the holiday season, but all year round.

The West Post Project Club met at the home of JoAnne Bodley on November 16. JoAnne gave the thought for the day about time and its value and sharing it with others. There were seven members and two guests that answered the roll call of your favorite potato recipe. After the “Pledge of Allegiance” was said the business meeting was held. Darlene Lange gave an interesting program about canning potatoes and various kinds were mentioned and discussed. She also told about an annual craft sale at Grand Meadow, Minn. that has many amazing ideas on display. A song was sung for the anniversary of Leona Mathews and one for the birthday of Darlene Lange. Lunch was served by the hostess. The December 21 meeting was the club’s noon Christmas potluck at the home of Donna Dull.

Eugene Louis Trudo February 12, 1929 December 18, 2016
Eugene farmed many places and worked at the Castalia Carnation Creamery. When the Castalia Creamery closed, he moved to California to stay working with the Carnation Creamery, while he was working there he also worked at a filling station. He returned to Iowa and worked at the Luana Creamery. In December of 1967, Eugene opened the McGregor Farmers’ Cooperative Elevator. He was also Chief of Police in McGregor in the early 1970’s. Together with his wife Ann, he owned and operated Gene’s Marina in McGregor, and then owned and operated The Riverview Bar and Grill in McGregor. After selling The Riverview to their son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Brenda, they operated The Pit Stop Bar and Grill and apartment complex in Marquette. Eugene enjoyed flying his airplanes and spending time boating on the Mississippi River.
Waukon State Bank recently made a generous $5000 donation toward this new ambulance serving Waukon and the surrounding area, bringing the fleet to three fully equipped ambulances at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Pictured left to right, is Dawn Farley, Senior Vice President, of Waukon State Bank, Mike Myers, Hospital Administrator, Gail Prestemon, Waukon State Bank President, and Jeff Mitchell, EMT-P, EMS Supervisor. The City of Waukon recently made an addition onto the current city ambulance garage to house this unit. Veterans Memorial Hospital, the Veterans Memorial Hospital Foundation, the City of Waukon and the Waukon Rural Ambulance Board together approved and purchased a new ambulance for the Waukon area service. The hospital’s ambulance runs have increased by over 75 % in the last 5 years, averaging 1.7 runs per day and 8-10 transfers per week. Many times both ambulances are tied up, requiring mutual aid from another service or leaving an EMT on-call with only a jump kit and their personal vehicle for a possible third emergency. Since the hospital ambulance service also covers for other area services when they are short staffed, especially during the day time hours, and provide cardiac backup for the entire county, this extra truck and equipment will be highly utilized.

Iowa study shows connections matter for children’s long-term health Jennifer Kimber
Community Prevention Specialist, Helping Services for Youth & Families In the mid-90’s, the CDC released a study about a specific exposure that dramatically increased the risk for 7 of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. People who are exposed in high doses have triple the risk of heart disease and lung cancer and a 20-year difference in life expectancy. This exposure is childhood trauma, and the study is called the Adverse Childhood Experiences study. Understanding what this study is and how it affects future health is important in determining how to best prevent exposure and to assist anyone in our community who has experienced childhood trauma. The ACE questionnaire asks participants 10 questions about childhood emotional and physical abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, and household dysfunction, which are examples of adverse childhood
Public records: Clayton County and Fayette County “A criminal charge is merely an accusation. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court” Clayton County________________ On December 4, 2016 at 6:44 AM, Clayton County Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Business 18 near McGregor. Upon further investigation it was determined that Katherine Riniker of Strawberry Point was operating a 2012 Dodge Ram when she lost control on snow covered roads. experiences (ACE). Based on survey responses, participants were given an ACE score from 0 to 10, 0 representing no trauma and 10 representing multiple adverse childhood experiences. The study then looked at how these scores were related to unfavorable health outcomes. The higher the ACE score, the more likely that person is to be a smoker, suffer from alcoholism, COPD, depression, and many more harmful health outcomes. If a child has a score of 4 or more, they have a 40% higher chance of having a learning delay, and their risk for suicide goes up 12 times! We now know more about developing brains than we ever have. Scientists and researchers can actually see decreased activity in certain areas of the brain after children live in environments with toxic stress. Learning to cope with stress is a normal part of childhood development, but, when that stress becomes prolonged and frequent, it affects areas of the brain, such as the fear response
center and the area that deals with impulse control. This stress also alters the child’s immune system, hormonal systems, and even the way their DNA is read and transcribed. The study found that ACEs are incredibly common. 55% of adults in Iowa have experienced at least 1 ACE, and 1 in 3 adults in Iowa have at least 2 ACEs, with childhood emotional abuse being the most common form. On average, 5 out of every 30 students in Iowa classrooms have a parent who has what is considered a very high ACE score. The impact of ACEs can last a lifetime, but they do not have to. Research is finding that making connections, as in building positive relationships, with children who have ACEs in their lives can truly make a difference. Educating families, building resilience, and being a caring person for a child can help that child to reduce the impacts. Positive relationships have been proven to help build
brain connections, and this is what helps to make a child resilient to adverse experiences. Every child should have a caring, positive adult in their lives. Becoming a mentor can be one way to get involved in your community and reduce future adverse health outcomes for children. You can sign up to become a mentor at www. helpingservices.org/mentoring. But mentoring is not the only option for helping people exposed to ACEs. Find more ways you can get involved and reduce ACEs in your community or better understand ACEs by visiting http://www.iowaaces360.org/ or contacting Jen Kimber, jkimber@ helpingservices.org. Serving families since 1973, Helping Services for Youth & Families is dedicated to responding to current health and safety needs of youth and families through empowerment, support, and education.

Annie’s Project provides agriculture business education to farm women Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a networking program that empowers women in agriculture to become better business partners and owners. Annie’s Project is a six-week course designed to help farm women develop their management and decision-making skills. Farm women participating in Annie’s Project courses become better business partners and owners by learning to manage and organize critical information for their own farms, while establishing networks with other farm women and agriculture business professionals. According to ISU Extension and Outreach Farm Specialist, Melissa O’Rourke, Annie’s Project covers five areas of agricultural risk management: financial, human resources, legal, marketing and production. O’Rourke states, “Our goal is to provide a program that is of great interest and value. Each session includes presentations, discussions, hands-on activities and computer skills training. In addition, guest speakers share their personal experiences and knowledge to help women become better business partners and owners.” The course will be offered at two northeast Iowa locations. Online registration is available at www.aep. iastate.edu/womeninag or at your local County Extension office. More than 33 states have implemented Annie’s Project sites since its inception in 2002. According to post-program surveys, participants have reported that the program encouraged learning and that the nurturing environment has facilitated ongoing conversation with local speakers. In addition, respondents were able to network with other professionals and stated that they felt comfortable interacting with others for additional information and assistance. Overall, participants remarked that the courses were beneficial in understanding the factors in farming that pertain to women, their families, and the land.

"Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 1: 3 NIV The end of the year can be a trying time for many. The hustle and bustle of the holidays, together with the felt need to spend more money than one can afford adds stress to our lives. Amid all the noise and celebrations, one should take some time for quiet reflection at the end of every year. Where did we fall short this past year? Surely all of us have done things we wish we hadn’t and failed to do some things that we should have. Some of those things might be items on our personal or professional development checklists, but more importantly we should reflect on where we have failed morally and spiritually. Are we closer to God now than we were a year ago? Is our prayer life better than it was a year ago, and is our treatment of family, friends and co-workers better as well? Reflect on what went well in your moral and spiritual progress this past year, and try to redouble your efforts in the areas that might not have gone so well. Consider what you need to work on next year, and consider going about it in a systematic way. There are a lot of ways to work on our characters, and perhaps one of the best was Ben Franklin’s system, which he describes in his autobiography. Franklin sought to perfect thirteen different virtues, and he worked on each one for a week, allowing him to work through all thirteen virtues four times over the course of the year. – Christopher Simon

For the past 77 years, Elaine Shaw has pursued a hobby that has benefited both family members and many others. The 85 year-old Elkader resident explained how she first became involved in a hobby that became a life-long passion. “I had an aunt who liked to knit,” she said. “When I was eight years old, I asked her if she would teach me. She told me that I was too young to learn, so I went to the library and found a book on how to do it and I taught myself.” Starting out with small items, she soon became proficient in creating larger things. “I kept getting better, but after I got married and our first child was born, I found out that crocheting was faster. Raising nine children left me a little short on time, but after they got older, I went back to knitting.” Her children benefitted from their mother’s skills as she turned out doll clothes for the girls. She also sewed clothes for the children and made rag dolls for them. “As the kids got older, I started to make more and more things for them, and eventually my grandchildren,” Shaw said. “I have also sent boxes of mittens, stocking caps, blankets and scarves to a Catholic run mission for Native Americans in Minnesota over the years. Shepherd of the Hills, a nonprofit organization operating out of St. Olaf, has also benefitted from Elaine’s talents. This year, she gave a box overflowing with hand-made winter gear to the organization to hand out for the Christmas season. “There were many dozens of items in the box,” Director Heather

Crogan said. “Some of them will go to our holiday shop for children and others will go to our clothing shop for people in need. Without donations like this, we would have a hard time to fulfill the needs of the people that we serve in Clayton County.” Elaine sometimes uses a knitting machine when she wants to turn out things quicker. “I can make a hat in about three hours on the machine, but I really enjoy hand knitting more. I think it looks better, and I enjoy seeing the different creations as they unfold right in front of me.” Shaw’s skills have become
well-known in the area. Through the years, people have asked her to make various items for them. “People used to order things like stocking caps, mittens or scarves with various college colors on them” she said. “I would just charge them for what the yarn cost.” “Elaine has no thoughts of slowing down. She estimates that she has made 3-4,000 items since she first took up the hobby, but admits that she has lost count. “I spend a lot of time each day knitting,” she said. “I do it all year round, and I have enough yarn to keep me going for a long time.”

Pirates lose to South Winn in last game before holiday break CHAD DRAHN
HERALD SPORTS The Pirates traveled to Calmar to play South Winn Tuesday night before the holiday break. With starter Nash Reicks out with an injury, the staring lineup included Owen Jacobson, Aboody Abdullahi, Blake Wettleson, Nick Jacobs and Avery Enyart. Harrison Dehning and Abdikani Osman came in off the bench. Although the Pirates were only down by two at the half, they would lose the game 51-42. Coach Mike Sass said, “The game started off very slow for us. We thought we could force some
turnovers on defense and I think we were able to do that early, but our offense did not perform well.” Offense was a problem for the Pirates most of the game. Sass said, “We had way too many turnovers and we became passive and were standing around too much. We struggled against their zone and we didn’t let things come to us when they went man to man. We really struggled on the offensive end.” Jacobson and Wettleson were the only two Pirates in double figures as they had 21 and 15 points respectively. Jacobson had the team’s only shot from beyond the arc.
About the defense, Sass said, “Our defense was all right for three fourths of the game. I thought after halftime we could come out and do better. But we didn’t have much energy and, as a result, we gave up too many points in the third quarter. As bad as our offense was, our defense kept us in the game in the first half. That was not the case in the second half.” The Pirates had hoped to be more patient in the second half and make harder and sharper cuts on offense. Sass said, “We did a little better job on offense, but unfortunately the defense suffered.” After the game, when asked
about any game changing plays, Sass said, “I thought when we had the ball with about 15 seconds to go and a tie game at the end of the first half, and then we shot too soon and allowed them to go get a basket before time expired was a big play. It gave them the lead and the momentum at halftime. We need to do a better job of time management and not let the opponent get the last shot.” Following the Christmas break, the Pirates will play North Fayette Valley on Tuesday, January 3. Sass added, “We will need to learn and improve from the South Winn game if we want to succeed.”
