Compensation Board recommends four percent raise for all elected County officials By CJ Eilers News Editor Every year, a Compensation Board gathers to look over the earnings of Keokuk County elected officials, compare it to other county averages and decide whether a pay increase is acceptable for the positions. Under Iowa Code 331.905, this is a required practice and is held in Keokuk County in December. Four board members were in attendance for this meeting: Phil Buschmann, Cathy Fry, Dixie Shipley and Lee Frimml. In attendance were Christy Bates, County Auditor; Dawn Goldman, Recorder; Christine Edmundson, County Treasurer and John Schroeder, County Attorney. Luann Berger, Auditor’s Designee, acted as secretary for the meeting. To begin, the Board elected Buschmann as Chairman of the Compensation Board for this year. The meeting was called to order and the minutes of last year’s meeting were approved. Letters of Recommendation and salary surveys had been submitted to the Compensation Board before the meeting, with the general consensus asking for a three percent across all department heads, citing that Keokuk County ranked low among other counties in Iowa for salaries. According to the salary survey
for fiscal year 2017 provided by the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC), Keokuk County ranks out of 99 counties: 68th for Supervisor salary at $27,680. 63rd out of the 64 for County Attorney salary at $75,448, who do not also practice privately in addition to their county position. 91st for Auditor salary at $48,440, plus stipends. 88th for Recorder salary at $47,940. 92nd for Sheriff salary at $61,328. 91st for Treasurer salary at $47,940. 74th in population. According to ISAC, Keokuk County Auditor, all positions make an average $10,000 less than the state average, with the exception of the Board of Supervisors. Members of the Compensation Board were not only receptive to the requested three percent raise, but increase the recommended increase to four percent, plus stipend increases for the Auditor and Board of Supervisors. The motion was made and passed for the four percent increase. Next, the Board of Supervisors will review the recommendation and decide to lower it. They cannot raise the increase, but can request the Board personally not be awarded a raise. The decision will come at a later date.

Last council meeting of year discusses new tornado sirens By CJ Eilers News Editor The Sigourney City Council met for the last time in 2016 on Wednesday, Dec. 21, where they discussed the new tornado siren system in town that has been completed. The Council approved the invoice from RC Systems of Waterloo for the sirens themselves. The labor and metal poles will be paid for through the city, and all other costs will be covered by up to $49,000 in federal and state grants gathered over the last few years, with the project costing $66,725 overall. While the exact amount received through the grant funding is unknown, the city will learn soon. Crews finished the work on the sirens-located at the water tower, lagoon system and elementary school-and will test the sirens to make sure they are functional. The PA system attached to the previous single siren system has been removed, so announcements will not be made other than the siren itself. Councilman Randy Schultz and Sigourney Police Chief Allan Glandon have been applying for grants for this warning system for four years. Both explain that the old system did not cover enough ground to warn all of the city, due to hills and high winds
A siren is set up west of Sigourney Elementary on Wednesday, Dec. 14. present during a storm. Outside of the tornado siren system, the council also approved a contract with Alan Sellers for Soccer Director and approved the
Annual Council Members Remuneration for the 2016 calendar year. The first council meeting of 2017 will take place on January 4 at Sigourney City Hall at 6 p.m.

By CJ Eilers News Editor Since acquiring K & L Foods in August, Brothers Market has worked on several renovations and improvement projects to the store’s interior and exterior, with the exterior finished recently. A new display for the sign by Highway 149 reflects the new ownership of Brothers Market and continues to scroll store deals across the video board. The outside of the building received a paint job over the fall, with new vinyl lettering installed last week. Each aisle inside also has new vinyl signs to direct customers to their groceries. According to store manager Rick Langrebe, the work is yet to be finished. The Sigourney store will be installing a new fresh meat case to improve their meat dept. selection in January. A remodel for the deli department is also planned in the near future, and will feature a new cold case for products made in that section. Both additions will be made to provide options similar to what customers can expect
Interior painting began earlier in the fall. in a larger store. “These renovations are a vast improvement for our store,” Landgrebe said. “A fresh paint job always makes a store feel welcoming.”
Brother’s Market will also host an “official opening” this spring, as management wished to renovate the store first. No date has been set for the opening.
Crews fit a new sign over the message board, welcoming drivers along Highway 149.

MENUS AND CALENDARS Sigourney Senior Center Lunch Menu
By CJ Eilers News Editor H&M Farm and Home has begun work to expand its store northward and plans to finish by February of next year. Owners Keith and Laurie Luettjohann chose to expand after two years of ownership to carry “bigger and broad categories” ranging from equipment to a wider selection of clothes. By the end of February, H&M will have 4,000 sq feet for the added selection and a rental center for digging, lawn, construction and
household equipment. “We’re very excited because we’ve always wanted to expand H&M,” Keith Luettjohann said. “We now have to time to commit to this project and we hope the weather holds up for us.” In addition to their current selection and added equipment, the Luetjohanns plan to add more auto, plumbing, and paint items to their inventory. They also plan to expand their clothing department with brands like Under Armour, in addition to their selection of Carhartt.
Renner Construction has already built the concrete wall for the building expansion and Atwood Electric will also work on the project. H&M will also develop their greenhouse into a garden center this spring. “It’s nice when you’re in the middle of a project and you cannot find what you need, you’ll be able to get the equipment here rather than wait a day to get it somewhere else,” Laurie Luettjohann said. “We’ll remain open as this work is being completed, so we appreciate everyone’s patience during this process.”

Just reminiscing By Hilda Souer In looking through my mother’s scrapbook I found a few loose clippings and one was when RAGBRAI XX came through Delta, for their breakfast stop. I do remember helping with this and that it was held outside on the grounds of the former gymnasium, now De;ta Town and Country Center. I do remember that some members or crew of the Ruritans from What Cheer, Gibson, and Thornburg helped also. While assisting in serving their breakfast I remember learning some of the biker’s where from Canada, Alaska, Indonesia, and Hawaii plus some from other of our 50 states plus former “Deltans.” In thinking about those from other places, I remember
Terry Branstad
some mentioning names of people they had met from Delta. Then, kind of this being in reverse, one of the volunteer workers waiting on a customer that had been a church camp counselor. A special memory is of one bike riders being quite late in arriving and volunteers had started packing up things. This cyclist showed young people how to use the magic words “please” and “thank you.” After his showing this, they learned that the biker’s problem of using his limbs was because he’d been a shooting victim and he over-powered his impulse to live for his little girl was more important and over-powered his near-suicide attempt.

Tales of the Ancient Sportsman Tales of the Ancient Sportsman By Burdell Hensley Columnist The first day of winter has come and gone and it was much nicer than the days leading up to that transfer to winter. I am recovering quite nicely from the tumble I took on the ice a couple of weeks ago and I actually can see out of both eyes now. I still have some discomfort in my rib cage area, but my chiropractor is working on that. Christmas holidays mean early deadlines and that means that I am writing this before Christmas and you will get it after Christmas. So with that in mind, I hope your Christmas was extra special and your time with your family was a blessing. The Ancient-ess and I will spend a very quiet Christmas and that is OK. We will get together with the Iowa grandkids on Christmas Eve at Lori’s place and then we have nothing to do Christmas day. I will probably start another puzzle and nap a little while watching Hallmark Christmas movies. A person can get hooked on those things. As I was doing my library research this week, I came across the tales column that I wrote for the Oskaloosa Herald 15 years ago. Apparently we were in the same situation then with nothing special to do on Christmas Day. I described the situation this way. I had settled in for a nice long nap and it was so quiet that you could hear a mouse run through the house. MOUSE! That is a fighting word for the Ancient-ess. She has reached the age where she can no longer jump on chairs or counter tops, now it just a blood curdling scream. Lord have mercy, the South may rise again. With the last mouse, she demanded that I run my trap line. So I got
Kevin Kinney
my trap and loaded it up with some delightful chunky peanut butter. Well that rascal licked that trap clean. The next line of attack was good old cheese pushed firmly into the bait holder. That got him and what a scrawny little critter. The poor thing was starving to death. But the Ancient-ess made me load the trap again just in case his country cousin came calling. But this mouse was a lone ranger. Then there is another mouse story that I remember well. This occurred back in the days when we had a wonderful water bed with a heater. It was so comfortable on cold evening when I would come home from covering a ball game. But that bed got to where it was killing my back and I could not sleep on it. The Ancient-ess loved it and would not give it up, so I opted to sleep in the basement on a very firm mattress. That cleared up my back problems in no time. One evening I came home from covering a football game and sacked out. About two in the morning, I thought I felt something run across my forehead. I thought maybe I was dreaming and went back to sleep. Before long I felt something moving along my side and when he got to my bare leg, he decided to have lunch. That varmint sunk his teeth into my thigh. YEEOW! I jumped out of that bed, threw blankets, sheet and anything else into a pile and stomped all over it. He got away, but the trap line nailed him later. The water bed didn’t last much longer. As it got colder I went back to the water bed even if my back hurt. But one day the bladder sprung a leak and we had a problem. The bladder made its way to Mt. Trashmore south of Oskaloosa and we sold the bed frame. A new bed was soon in place and the mice don’t like it. My sports coverage was finished for the year on Tuesday night and now it will be a couple of weeks before things take off again. Tuesday night I was at Pella for the Pella-Norwalk games. The Pella
girls rolled to a 71-30 win, but the boys game was a barnburner. Pella used a basket by Nick Finney in the final nine seconds to pull out a 6160 win. Norwalk has one of the finest freshmen players that I have ever seen in Bowen Born. The program says he is five foot nine inches, but he can’t be over 5-4. He is tiny, but one of the slickest ball handlers and shooters I have seen. You Iowa State fans will remember the name Born and I can assure you that this kid has the right genes. Let’s take a look at what happened in our yesterdays. 45 years ago: Dec. 29, 1971 – Sigourney and Pekin win in the first round of the Holiday Belles tourney in Sigourney. Pekin squeezed out a 55-52 win over Tri-County behind a 41 points outburst by Nancy Hendrickson. Bonnie Foster led T-C with 26 points. Sigourney rode a 41 point blast by Pat Joachim to a 6659 win over North Mahaska. Jan Coulter led NM with 24 points and LuAnn Phillips added 18. Dec. 30A pair of free throws by Pat Yoder allowed Pekin to slip past Sigourney 74-73 to win the Holiday Belles tourney. Nancy Hendrickson poured in 61 points for Pekin and Pat Joachim had 44 for Sigourney. 25 years ago: Dec. 31, 1991- Oskaloosa native, Tim Lewis, was named to the NCAA DIII all American team. Lewis was a defensive end for Central. Jan. 4- The Osky girls nipped PC on a late free throw by Deanne Fick. Jill Huyser led the Indians with 22 points while Kendra Vander Wilt had 22 for PC. Jan. 4No. 1 ranked Pella Christian cruised to a 68-49 win over the Osky boys. Eric Pothoven led PC with 20 points while Eric Smith led Osky with 17. 15 years ago: Dec. 28 2001- A 47 yard field goal attempt by Iowa State was inches wide and Alabama escaped with a 14-13 win over the Cyclones. Dec. 31 – Iowa beat Texas Tech 19-16 in the Alamo Bowl. Have a great week and lets get rested up for the big run of high school sports after the holidays.`

According to Juston Lamb, Vocational Agriculture and FFA instructor at Pekin, this was an “extremely difficult event” by also a positive one for students. Despite neither team from Pekin coming away with scholar-

like this,” Lamb said. “They were exposed to a lot of different elements of the industry and had to put a lot of prep work into competing.”

Lady Savages jump out early at HLV, and roll to a 46-22 victory Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor VICTOR- The Lady Savages remain undefeated on the season as they head into the holiday break after they dismantled HLV, Victor 46-22 on the road Tuesday, Dec. 20. The girls used a 22-0 first quarter run to start the game to put this one away early. The last three quarters were relatively close, but with HLV in such a deep hole, there was no way they could muster enough offensively to overcome Sigourney. Autum Barthelman led Sigourney in scoring with 13 points, she also added two assists and an astonishing ten steals on the evening. Brooke Waechter followed up her

With the victory Sigourney moves to 8-0 overall on the season. They have averaged a scoring margin of over 20-points. Sigourney will be back in action on January 3 at home against BGM. Dahlstrom’s jumper in the final seconds propel Lady Panthers over Columbus Junction Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor PEKIN- A magnificent finish in a game that was originally scheduled to take place a week before. Pekin hosted Columbus Junction on Wednesday, Dec. 21 in a make-up game from last Friday. The Lady Panther’s and Columbus both came out sluggish to start the game as Pekin held a slight 7-5 lead after the first, but then both offenses erupted to the tune of 20-18 in the second quarter in favor of Pekin, giving them a 27-23 lead at the half. After the break, Columbus came out strong and took the lead 42-35 after the third, using a 19-8 third quarter run to go up seven with the final eight minutes to play. Pekin then chipped away, steadily, at the Co-
lumbus lead until Pekin had an opportunity in the waning seconds of the game. Maci Gambell was fouled inside with two free-throw attempts coming with her team down only two. So, a chance to tie thhings up for the Lady Panther’s, but after making her first attempt, she just missed the second. However, the ball caromed off of a Columbus player and Pekin was given one last chance. Kaylee Linder took the inbound and hit Shea Dahlstrom who in turn knocked down a huge jump shot with 1.7 seconds left to play to put Pekin up 56-55, which, after a last second heave by Columbus failed, ended up being the final score in this one. Maci Gambell was terrific once again, scoring 22 points on only five of six from the field. She made a living at the charity stripe, knocking
down nine of 15 free throw attempts. Gambell also hauled in 15 rebounds. Faith Oostra had a good night scoring 11 for the Lady Panthers. Zoey Wright had six points and four assists helping distribute the ball amongst her teammates, and Haley Gambell scored six as well for the Lady Panthers.. It was Shea Dahlstrom, who had four points on the night, which made the biggest jumper of the season thus far for Pakin. Her shot propels Pekin to 5-3 at the break instead of 4-4 and helps give them some much-needed momentum as they now ride a two game winning streak into the holiday break. Pekin will be back in action January 3, against IMS. Pekin Columbus

Maci also corralled 16 rebounds, snatched four steals, a block and an assist. Haley Gambell was second in scoring for the Lady Panthers with 12 points; she also had six rebounds and three assists. Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor NEW SHARON- The English Valleys Lady Bears fell on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 20 when they traveled to North Mahaska for a SICL conference matchup. ed eight points and eight rebounds on the evening. Pekin shot over 50% from the field as a team en route to their win Tuesday. They also outrebounded Winfield to help put the game away early. Coach Davis Eidahl was very pleased with his team as a whole, and two young ladies in particular. “Maci Gambell had a good all around game tonight, and she has really developed an excellent inside game, as she has been a great outside shooter, but now she has really developed as a player all-around. Haley Gambell played her best game of the year tonight, and Emily Linder came off the bench and gave us some really good minutes.” Pekin 12 12 20 11 55 Winfield MT-UN. 11 1 12 8 32

Tri-County girls fall at home in make-up game Monday night against North Mahaska Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor THORNBURG- The Trojans had their hands full with North Mahaska on Monday, Dec. 19 as they hosted NM in a make-up game from the previous week that had been postponed due to inclement weather. Tri-County found themselves in a defensive struggle throughout this game as they were never able to climb out of the five to ten point hole that they seemed to be in all game. They had moments when they would go on short runs and work it down within two possessions, but NM would inevitably keep the distance and earn the road victory. Tri-County falls to 3-5 on the season with the loss. NM TC

Trojan boys fall at home against North Mahaska Monday Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor THORNBURG- The Tri-County boys played North Mahaska, New Sharon very tough on Monday, Dec. 19 at home. In fact, for over a half of basketball they played NM to a virtual tie, but in the end NM was able to change the pace of the game in the second half on Tri-County. When the tempo changed during that second half of basketball, the momentum that Tri-County had built evaporated. The Trojans ended up falling 54-41. Despite having more depth than NM, The Trojans were unable to withstand that NM second half scoring surge. However, Tri-County held NM to just six points scored after the first quarter, and they were tied with NM (16-16) at the half. Tri-County still played very good defense in the third quarter, holding NM to 12 points scored, but were unable to connect from the field offensively scoring six points. The fourth saw both teams revving up the offensive production, to the tune of 45 combined points, but in favor of NM 26-19, as the Hawks were able to pull away in
the end making free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Jacob Bombei again was very good all-around for Tri-County, as he came away with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and a block on the night. Cameron Krumm gave the Trojans solid play inside, scoring nine points and grabbing eight boards. Lane Williams hit three 3’s on the night, scoring all nine of his points from behind the arc on three of five shooting from distance. Walter McKay had a good night on the glass, snagging 11 rebounds to go with six points. Two underclassmen, Brayden Monroe (Fr.) and Aydan Bos (So.), added five assists between them. The loss drops Tri-County to 1-6 on the year overall. This was a hard-fought home game displayed by the Trojans, and with the holiday break looming, they will hope that their tough play over the past three games in particular, despite being loses, will translate into some more victories on the other side of the break. EV boys lose on the road at North Mahaska Tuesday Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor NEW SHARON- The Bears had another rough night as their losing streak is extended to seven with their lose at North Mahaska on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Brayden Fisher had 12 points for EV, and Chad Owens added ten and Ambrose Coffman had four, but no other EV player was able to score on the evening other than those three. EV again fell behind early and dug too deep a hole to be able to get out of. It was 11-2 after a quarter of play, and NM led 29-6 at the half. By the end it was a NM 59-26 victory. EV continues to struggle to score points as they are averaging less than 30 points a game, but they continue to make small improvements on an individual level. The turnovers are considerably less, and they are still getting shot attempts, as they had 40 against NM. Getting those shots to fall is the next step, as they have shot poorly this season, but when that keeps happening the only thing to do is to keep on shooting. Sigourney downs HLV on the road in boys action Tuesday, head to break at 4-4 Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor VICTOR- Sigourney’s boys basketball team was in action Tuesday, Dec. 20 against HLV, Victor on the road. The Savages edged their way past HLV for a 34-31 victory. The Savages clawed their way through this game, which it wasn’t necessarily the prettiest of games at times, but when it was all said and done the Savages came away with a win, and a win is most definitely a win. Sigourney was led in scoring by Brady Powers and Dustin Haines who both had nine. Dustin added seven steals, four assists and seven rebounds. Powers had four steals and two assists. Haines had been sidelined with a broken finger, to go with a wrist injury amongst other ailments, but he was able to go and really provide a much-needed spark for the Savages. Kyle Weber added four points, eight boards and four blocks on the night. The win puts Sigourney at 4-4 on the season as they enter the holiday
Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor COLFAX-MINGO- Aydon Bos had a great night shooting for Tri-County on Tuesday, Dec. 20 when his team traveled to Colfax-Mingo, but it was not enough to propel the Trojans past C-M as they fell 72-60. Bos scored 23 points on eight of 14

Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor WINFIELD- The Panthers were in action Tuesday, Dec. 20 when the faced off against a tough Winfield-Mount Union squad that Pekin was never able to shake all evening. It was a very solid basketball game in which both teams had ample opportunity to win the game down the stretch, but inevitably there would be a need for an overtime period to decide the winner of this game. Alexander Holt Regional Sports Editor WILLIAMSBURG- The Tri-County Trojans and the English Valleys Bears both wrestled at Williamsburg’s super duals on Thursday, Dec. 22. The results were mixed for both programs, as TC knew going in that they would have to finish sixth out of six schools participating, but coach Scott Edmundson’s two wrestlers, Clay Harper and Noah McCammant, had a decent showing at Williamsburg. EV faired a bit better at Williamsburg, but still felt as though they could have done better. They went 2-3 on the day and took fourth overall on the evening. It was a hard-fought evening of wrestling that saw these two programs have both ups and downs throughout. Below are the match results for both schools.
