SENIOR CONCERNS While there have been recent indications that people over age 65 generally are happier and less anxious than younger adults, the prevalence of mental illness among seniors may be higher than previously thought. According to one study that examined the mental well-being of 3,100 individuals between ages 65 and 85, one third of the study’s participants had suffered from a mental disorder within the previous year, and one quarter of the respondents were diagnosed with a current mental illness. Anxiety disorders (17%) topped the list of mental health conditions experienced by the seniors in the study, followed by depressive disorders (14%).
