ACS honors Ida County with award The American Cancer Society honored the Relay For Life of Ida County and the Ida County event leadership team with a “Community of Choice” award. Ida County was selected for 2016 because the event leadership team was challenged with changing locations on short notice, creating an even more successful Relay For Life at the new location. “For almost 20 years, Ida County has held a very successful Relay For Life, with a strong tradition of fun for purpose,” said Ann Hoeppner, American Cancer Society’s community manager for Ida County. “However, a last-minute change of event location is a true test of a leadership team. The event leadership team, led by Ryan
Goodman, took a creative solution of moving to the Ida Grove City Park with great results.” For 2017, teams from local families, businesses, schools, places of worship and the community as a whole are invited to participate in the annual Relay For Life of Ida County on July 15 at the Ida Grove City Park. Relay For Life teams are committed to help save more lives from cancer by raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life events unite communities to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight to eliminate cancer as a significant health threat. Everyone is welcome at the Ida County Relay For Life, where teams and individuals will gath-
er for a community meal and family fun. Teams raise funds in the months leading up to the event, then celebrate cancer survivors with a ceremony and victory walk. At dusk, a moving and inspiring luminaria ceremony is held to honor people fighting cancer and remember those lost to cancer. The event is illuminated by hundreds of soft glowing luminarias, each representing a message of remembrance, a prayer of thanks or words of hope. “Relay For Life is a chance to make a great impact in the fight to end cancer,” said Goodman, Relay For Life event lead. “Many participants have had loved ones face cancer themselves. Each new team brings us one step closer to saving more lives.”

The Ida County Board of Supervisors met Feb. 17 to hear concerns regarding a possible phase two wind turbine construction. Three concerned county residents visited with the board. Mason Fleenor, Brent Bower and Bill Wellendorf believe the wind towers are built too close to residential houses. Fleenor went on to say, “We’ve already wrecked half of Ida County.” (He was referring to scenery and economic development.) If the wind turbine is built between a quarter mile to a half mile away, you can constantly hear them and see their shadows inside houses, he said. After lengthy discussions regarding the benefits of the wind towers on the local economy, the main concern was the new towers being built too close to residential homes. The board recommended the three meet with the planning and zoning commission to discuss amending the original zoning application to move the towers further away from homes in future projects. Rita Frahm, representing Ida County Economic Development,
requested consideration from the board in the amount of $25,000 (same as last year) and a continued partnership in the Western Iowa Advantage regional economic development. Frahm also provided the board with a list of accomplishments and utilization of last year’s funds. The board approved the bid from Wiese Construction of Cushing, for $16,700 to complete the communication center project. The supervisors opened sealed bids for miscelleanous items recently advertised. Bids received included: recreational vehicle– Earl Zoch, $526 and Randy Hargroves, $655 (Hargroves’ bid was approved); file cabinet–Zoch, $5, Julie Phillips, $20 (Phillips’ bid was approved) and TV/VCR/DVD combo–Zoch, $5. All remaining items that did not receive a bid will be disposed of properly. The board also approved: the joint application for a stream channel stabilization structure on D-54 near the Soldier River; an insurance claim through Benefits Inc. and hired Shelby Ellis at $15.50 per hour as a full time (continued on page 2)
Falcon Time draws students, teachers together Falcon Time is part of the O-A/BCIG Middle School concept. It’s a time for a small group of students to have a type of “home base.” It helps with the transitions between elementary and high school. Schools that have these types of groups have reported more positive student-teacher relations and few discipline problems. A middle school concept is based on students this age needing guidance in not only academics, but meeting their needs socially, emotionally, physically and psychologically. At O-A/BC-IG Middle School, there are seven Falcon Times per grade, with each group having 12 members. At the beginning of the year, each Falcon Time creates a shield that represents their group and builds unity among the members. Each week, they also have an intramural day, where students go to the gym and have relay races. Dee Boger said, “Every Monday— we do a ‘Falcon Talk,’ where students tell what they did over the weekend and just visit. Believe it or not, kids like this and actually look forward to sharing with someone. I think they really miss that part of elementary— our version of Show and Tell, I suppose. “We also play family-type games (Outburst, Tri-Bond, etc.). A lot of students don’t have an opportunity to play games. We form small tournaments and meet with another group. I love Falcon Time.” According to Boger, “O-A/BC-IG’s Falcon Time curriculum focuses on the Iowa Core’s 21st Century Skills. The curriculum we use is divided up
by months. We do short activities in the following areas: September— getting acquainted activities, study skills and decision making; October—drug and alcohol awareness (red ribbon activities); November— interpersonal communications; December—community involvement; January—social media and career planning; February— itness and positive attitudes; March—self esteem; April—problem solving and May—relationships and responsibilities.” During December, the Falcon Times collected nonperishable items for a food drive. Hospital day: Rep. Matt Windschitl (R-Missouri Valley), who represents Ida County in the Iowa House of Representatives, met recently with representatives of Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. The group was visiting the capitol to talk with legislators as a part of the Iowa Hospital Association’s Day on the Hill. Participating in the visit were, from left, Carrie Arens, Jean Burns, Chris Nichols (seated) and Michelle Weber, all of Ida Grove, and Rep. Windschitl.
Volunteers needed for IG ambulance service The Ida Grove Ambulance Service is in need of volunteers to help out one to two days a month. Director Dave Larson said the service currently has 24 members, but additional help is need. “We’re not in a crisis situation,” noted Larson. “Some of our current members are on maternity leave and the remainder of the volunteers are getting spread a little thin. We need to ill in some gaps. Even if the new volunteers could help out one to two days a month, it would be helpful.” Potential volunteers need to be at least 19 years old, live within ive miles of Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, have a valid driver’s license and a clean back-
ground. Larson noted new volunteers don’t have to go through an extensive training period unless they choose to do so. “To be part of the ambulance crew, initially, a person needs a valid license and a CPR certi icate,” said Larson. “We will provide any training beyond that. That training consists mainly of showing new volunteers where the equipment is located and if, down the road, they want to be certi ied by the state, a six-month course is available. “Right now, we just want some bodies to start. Our experience has been, when we go after people who want to be certi ied right
away, they either get certi ied and leave or the certi ication process is too much for them. “We’d prefer they join and get their feet wet and then, if they want to continue, we can get them lined up with additional training.” Larson added, if there are people who would like to just drive the ambulance, that option is also available. “To become a driver, you’re required to take a defensive driving course and then navigate an ambulance through an obstacle course.” Applications to join the ambulance service are available from any current member. For more information or if you have questions, contact Larson at 369-9841.
O-A/BC-IG to host annual hike bike event Family and friends of O-A/BCIG students will soon see the familiar blue envelopes once again in their mailboxes as the annual Whitey Thompson Hike Bike event nears. Hike bike is a fun event hosted for O-A/BC-IG students of all ages. Participants will have a fun day walking or biking the trail in Ida Grove, creating memories with their friends and have a chance at some great prizes. Funds raised from the Hike Bike event go to the Dollars for Scholars program. Every year, O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars awards scholarships to all seniors who apply. Last year,
$158,295 was awarded to 46 seniors. That’s an average of more than $3,400 per student. Last year, hike bike donations totaled more than $78,732 and, after expenses, $65,415 was donated to O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars to help fund scholarships. O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars’ goal is to give a scholarship to every student who applies. To participate, students complete a packet of sponsor letters. Extra packets are available from each of the school buildings and the United Bank of Iowa offices in Ida Grove, Odebolt and Arthur. Those completed sponsor let-
ters then need to be returned to school before March 24. Students who turn in packets after this date may not get a t-shirt. The 2017 Whitey Thompson Hike Bike is scheduled for May 10 at 1:45 p.m. The hike bike starts at Skate Palace in Ida Grove. All school buildings will be dismissing at 1 p.m. that day. Hike Bike is sponsored by United Bank of Iowa and O-A/BC-IG Dollars for Scholars. If you have any questions, contact Marcia Cates, Ellen Schable or Taylor Walker at UBI at 712-364-3393 or visit oabcig.dollarsforscholars.org.

Out of the Past Forty years ago Arthur’s city budget for fiscal year 1977-78 has been the victim of the whims of Mother Nature, mechanical failure, stricter standards and plain old inflation. Total spending for the year is set for $56,800, up from the current $36,100. Simple inflation has hit every fund, especially in the amounts set aside for salaries, utilities and insurance. Add in the winter’s extremely cold temperatures which caused freeze problems with the city’s water system, forcing crews to dig up lines buried under streets for repair. What started out as just an idea has grown into one of the most popular classes being offered by the adult education program in Ida Grove. More students have signed up for the new firearms course than the classroom can hold. Ida County Sheriff Don Gebers teaches the new class, offering education on firearms. Thirty years ago The Ida County Cattlemen’s Association crowned Melissa Erlemeier as their 1987 beef queen.
She was named queen during the annual beef banquet at the Ida Grove Community Hall. Tracy Prell and Maren Bergman were named beef princesses. The Ida County Sheriff ’s department received new, state-ofthe-art Motorola Centra Comm II communication equipment this week. The new center is valued at more than $60,000 and should be completely in operation within the next week. The center’s main power line, located at the courthouse, was struck by lightning last August, causing major damage to the main console and the majority of the radio equipment at the communication center. The new equipment was completely covered by insurance. Twenty years ago The Ida County Board of Supervisors signed a detour agreement with the DOT and discussed when to begin graveling county roads at its meeting Tuesday. The DOT requested the detour from the county in order to close and repair a portion of Highway 175 near Battle Creek. Chad Niemeier of Galva-Hol-
stein placed sixth at the 145pound weight class at state wrestling this past weekend. Niemeier closed out his senior season with a 41-4 record. He won three matches and lost three matches during the state tournament. Ten years ago An Iowa blizzard brought Ida County to a standstill on Thursday and Friday, closing schools, postponing activities, blocking highways and stopping mail service. Ida County Sheriff Wade Harriman noted no major problems during the storm, adding that most people heeded the advice of weathercasters and stayed home. Ida County received around 12 inches of snow and high winds created high drifts. Battle Creek-Ida Grove High School girls’ basketball team continues to bring in victories with an 87-47 win over Prairie CityMonroe in first round state tournament action in Des Moines. The Falcons now tackle AGWSR (Ackley) in semifinal action. The winner of that game advances to the state title game.

by Brian DeMoss Social Security district manager Spencer/ Storm Lake Receiving housing bene its? A trip to Social Security may not be necessary. Social Security is constantly evolving to make your life easier. If you are currently receiving bene its from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and are reapplying for bene its or are assisting someone with their application, a trip to the Social Security of ice is probably not necessary even if veri ication of Social Security bene its is needed. Because of a data exchange established between Social Secu-
rity and HUD, most people do not need to contact Social Security for a bene it veri ication letter. HUD administrators processing a Recerti ication Application for Housing Assistance can use their Enterprise Income Veri ication (EIV) System to verify Social Security and Supplemental Security Income bene its. Public housing agencies, private owners and management agents administering HUD rental assistance programs may get registration information about EIV by logging onto the following websites: go.usa.gov/x97mH or go.usa.gov/x97m6 If you are a new applicant for housing assistance, you can provide your HUD administrator
with your Social Security award letter, Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) notice, SSA-1099 or other SSA bene it document you should have received at the beginning of the calendar year or when you began receiving bene its, whichever is later. We created these data exchange agreements to help you get the support you need at the irst point of contact, even if that’s not with Social Security. If you do need to provide proof of Social Security bene its yourself, we have another way to save you a trip to Social Security. You can get an instant bene it veri ication letter with a personal my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/ myaccount.

Effec ve programming helps crossover youth At a training hosted by the Third Judicial District Court of Iowa Feb. 2, participants learned about the prevalence of crossover youth and effective strategies to help youth stay out of the criminal justice system. Crossover youth are youth that are involved in both child welfare and juvenile justice programs. Ida, Buena Vista and Cherokee Counties are part of the Third Judicial District Court. According to presenter Macon Stewart, MSW senior program manager at the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, dually involved youth are more likely to be detained following arrest at a higher rate than non-dually involved youth and more likely to receive placements in more restrictive settings. Many of the youth are not attending school or have attendance problems. Many have special education issues that may or may not have been identi ied and many come from families that have a history of mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence and/or criminal behavior. Studies from across the country

indicate that from 17-67 percent of youth in juvenile justice populations had a history of child welfare because of maltreatment. Children involved in child welfare have an increased likelihood of arrest as a juvenile by 55 percent and of arrest for a violent crime as a juvenile by 96 percent. There is also an increased likelihood of arrest as an adult by 38 percent and of arrest for a violent crime as an adult by 30 percent. As of the time of the training, Woodbury County had 53 youth that met the de inition of crossover youth – 58 percent of them being minority ethnicities. The 110 training attendees from the tri-state area learned about effective practices that can be employed to work for more positive outcomes for crossover youth. The Third Judicial District Department of Juvenile Court Services has worked since 2008 to implement the Crossover Youth Practice Model and continues to work to improve outcomes for crossover youth. Intensive collaboration between the Department of Human Services (DHS) and Juvenile Court Services is a key to more
positive outcomes. By identifying the youth early, engaging in joint case planning with DHS, sharing resources and working from the youth and family strengths, youth that ind themselves dually involved have a better chance for a better outcome. Juvenile Court Services has worked with schools and service providers to implement risk-based strategies to provide more appropriate responses to delinquent behavior. Since 2008, when the work to improve outcomes began in Woodbury County, the number of complaints iled against youth dropped from 1,809 to 818 per year – a decrease of 121 percent. During this same period, the number of delinquency petitions iled dropped 16 percent. The work that has been completed in this area has also helped to decrease the use of detention and shelter care for this population and has decreased the number of youth that are waived to adult court. Chief Judge Duane E. Hoffmeyer recently commented, “It is through the application of best practices and utilization of data to guide our work that allows us to have better outcomes.”

Grammy award winner to perform at Rosemary Clausen Center Grammy Award winner Mike Farris will perform his show, Mike Farris Sings the Soul of America, at the Rosemary Clausen Center for the Performing Arts in Holstein on Saturday, March 11. Show time is 7:30 p.m. March 11 is the makeup date for the original January performance that was postponed due to bad weather. Patrons should use their January tickets for admittance. In music, there are those special artists that seem to transcend genre and defy categorization. From time to time, one hears a voice that can stop you dead in your tracks and shake your foundation to the core. Farris is that artist, and he has that voice. “For our irst venture into the realm of R and B, we felt nothing but the best would do, and that is how we feel about Farris,” said Ken Buell, the Clausen Center ticket manager. “We irst met Mike in Kansas City, and we were indeed drawn to his voice and presence. After meeting him, we hoped that we could attract him to the Clausen Center for a performance, and we
were delighted when he accepted our invitation. “His southern heritage and rich talent allow him to offer a unique blend of music and soul that includes blues, rock, jazz and R and B. And, he is not alone on the stage. The incredibly talented, ninemember Roseland Rhythm Revue surrounds him. Together, they will keep you wondering about what might possibly come next. “In 2015, Farris became the irst artist to receive a Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album with his Shine for All the People. He is sure to be honored many more times.” The Nashville-based Farris is held in high esteem by his fellow performers, writers and producers. Ashley Cleveland may have said it best, “Mike Farris is like a combo platter of joy and faith and mystery and chaos. There is nobody else like him.” A limited number of tickets will be available for this show. To purchase tickets or get more information, contact Ken Buell at 712-3684849 or kenbuell@frontiernet.net.

Convenient and healthy? I often hear people talk about how expensive and time consuming eating healthy is. True, fresh fruits and vegetables can be expensive, especially if they go to waste in your refrigerator. But, let’s be truthful: which is healthier, a banana or potato chips? A large banana has 120 calories and no fat and is full of potassium. The standard serving size for potato chips is one ounce; that is, 13 to 16 chips with 160 calories and 10 grams of fat. And, let’s face it; no one eats a standard serving size of potato chips—so, multiply the calories, salt and fat by two, three or more times. What about convenience? Peel a banana or open the bag of chips: I’d say it’s a tie. So, if those fruits and veggies sitting in your refrigerator are getting super ripe, cut them up and throw them in the freezer. Then, when you need a quick healthy meal, get out the blender. Start with some protein: un lavored Greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Then, let your imagination run wild. Add a handful of your frozen fruit. You can add spinach or
kale, almond milk, peanut butter or avocado or protein powder. The combinations are endless. Watch for discounted fruit or veggies at the grocery store. They’re perfect for the freezer and a healthy smoothie. Just remember, smoothies can add up in calories, so watch what goes into your smoothie and use it as a meal substitute when you are in a hurry. You just might ind eating healthy is more convenient, more fun and less expensive than you thought.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a fishing report compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. For more information about lakes and rivers in this area call the Black Hawk District Office in Lake View at 712-657-2638 or go online at iowadnr.com. Black Hawk Lake—Black Hawk Lake is ice free. The panfish bite has been good this last week. Enjoy the nice weather and catch some fish. Bluegill - Good: Catch good numbers of bluegill from shore, especially from the stone piers in Town Bay. Try also along Ice House Point and near the inlet. Use small tube jigs or hair jigs tipped with bait fished under a bobber. Most fish are 6.5-7.5 inches. Channel catfish - Fair: After ice out is a good time to catch catfish from shore. Use cut bait and stink bait at Ice House Point, Lakewood Point area, the rock pile north of Cottonwood Point, and the east shore near the outlet. Black crappie - Fair: Use small jigs fished under a bobber. Walleye - Fair: Some walleye are being caught from shore on twisters and minnows. Most are being picked up in Town Bay and along Ice House Point, but anywhere along shore with rocky structure and drop-offs can produce fish (e.g., Gunshot hill and
east end near the outlet). Muskellunge - Fair: Anglers have picked up a few musky since ice-out. There is a 40-inch minimum length limit on musky in Black Hawk Lake. Storm Lake (including Little
Storm Lake) —Storm Lake is icefree. After ice-out is a good time to catch catfish from shore using stink bait and cut bait. As water temperature begins to slowly rise, look for walleye fishing from shore to pick up.

Let’s Go to the Movies TONIGHT!
Greetings, moviegoers. The coming two weekends, we are showing “The LEGO Batman Movie” (PG, animated). There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker’s (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two. The second “Sports Favor-
ites” classic film for March is “A League Of Their Own” (1992). The All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men’s return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women’s baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country.
Starring Geena Davis, Lori Petty and Tom Hanks. Show times “The Lego Batman Movie”— Friday (March 10) – 7 p.m., Saturday (March 11) – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday (March 12) – 3:30 p.m. “A League Of Their Own”— Sunday (March 12) - 7 p.m., Monday (March 13) – 7 p.m. and Tuesday (March 14) – 7 p.m. Up next: “Jackie,” “Rudy” (1983), “Sully” and “Chariots Of Fire” (1981).
