O-A/BC-IG boys’ track team builds around field events
Field events will anchor the O-A/BC-IG boys’ track and field team this season as several veteran jumpers and throwers return from last season including a state meet qualifier. “I think we will be strong again in our field events,” noted coach Travis Chizek. “We have two experienced throwers coming back in Ryder Meek (a 2016 state qualifier in the shot put) and Tyler Anderson, two veteran long jumpers in Dylan Wunschel and Adam Grote, as well as a high jumper in Ryan Kolpin who placed in many meets last year. It is nice to get a bunch of points on the board before the running starts.” Meek placed 10th in the class 2A shot put in 2016 with a throw of 48-10 ½. The coach added the running events are also going to be productive. “We will be relatively balanced in our running events. There are quality kids at every distance for us and we are excited to see how our kids develop and compete throughout the year.” The Falcon roster includes 15 returning letter winners including seniors Dylan Wunschel, Devon Fritz and Adam Grote; juniors Chase Devitt, Isaac Endrulat, Ryder Meek, Tyler Anderson and Ryan Kolpin and sophomores Dylan Hemer, Ethan Mortensen, Grant Conover, Devin Behrendsen, Ethan Young, Quintin Cranston and Austin Lindner. Other team members are junior Derek Sharkey, sophomores Kaden Ladwig, Dalton Williamson and Shawn Hopkins and freshmen Evan Veltri, Elijah Gebel, Ben Bergman, Philip Brooks, Nick Sholty, Carson Godbersen, William Grote, Leighton Barnum, Tevin Harms, Sam Devitt, Darian Hannel, Garrett Leed and Izaiah Ironshell.
According to coach Chizek, the Falcons’ top returning sprinters are Wunschel, Grote, Cranston and Chase Devitt. Endrulat, Conover, Hemer and Young are the top middle distance runners. Fritz will be the leader among the distance runners. Meek and Anderson will be the leaders in the shot and discus. Chizek pointed to Grote and Wunschel as the team’s top long jumpers. Kolpin and Lindner will be counted on for points in the high jump. “Just like every year, it takes time for the coaches to get a feel for the team,”
noted Chizek. “We like the pieces we have right now and we are excited to get to work and see where this team can go.” The coach added the main goals at this point of the season are to “compete in every meet and continue to improve each week.” Chizek’s assistant coaches are Tony Napierala, Andrea Nielsen and Holly Neutzman. O-A/BC-IG girls’ track team on a youth movement A young, but promising girls’ track and field team will represent O-A/BC-IG this spring. Of the 36 girls out for track and field, 28 are either freshmen or sophomores. Nineteen are freshmen. “We have a pretty well rounded team,” noted coach Bob Saunders. “We have a lot of young kids, especially freshmen, so it is kind of hard to tell right now where they will be (event wise). “I’m excited we have so many young kids. Our freshmen were part of conference championship teams as seventh and eighth graders. That group has good numbers and good work habits. And we’ve seen some nice improvements in our sophomores.” The sophomore class includes Sydney Durbin who won the class 2A state meet high jump as a freshman. She cleared 5-4 at the state meet and has already jumped 5-6 to win the high school high jump at the Buena Vista University indoor meet March 18. Other state meet place winners who return this season include the entire 4x100 relay team of senior Summit Nielsen, juniors Jordan Fredericks and Calli Wareham and sophomore Sarah Cotton that placed 17th at state. All of the runners who made up the 4x200 relay that placed 18th at state also return. The unit includes Fredericks, Wareham, Cotton and junior Jordyn Hedberg. Half of the shuttle hurdle relay team that placed 17th at the 2016 state meet is back. The returnees are Nielsen and sophomore Ashley Lindner. Sophomore Madison Schiernbeck ran 17th in the state meet 3,000. “The events we’ve been strong in the past few years are going to continue to be good for us,” said Saunders. “We have pretty good hurdlers, sprint relays, distance events and some good jumpers. “And you never know what new events will springboard and have a good season. It is pretty early to tell what events might be a strength.” Saunders gave the following assessments of the various Falcon running and field events: Sprints-“We have the same nucleus back from last year with Fredericks, Hedberg, Wareham and Cotton. Durbin also ran in a lot of our sprint events. There might be a couple of freshmen that could help us as well.”
Hurdlers-“We have a couple of pretty good hurdlers in Nielsen and Lindner. Sophomore Kirsten Dausel, senior Carrie Miller and a couple of freshmen will also be in the mix. “It will be interesting to see who will fill a couple of open spots on our shuttle hurdle. That has usually been a good event for us at the high school and middle school level. We have some freshmen coming up who aren’t perfect yet, but they are pretty ready to fill in.” Middle distance-“Schiernbeck can run anything from 400s to 3,000s. Sophomore Alyssa Mason was a state crosscountry meet qualifier last fall and is a good 800 and 3,000 runner. “One area we don’t know a lot about is our 400 and 800 kids. Hopefully, we’ll have some kids step up for us.” Distance events-“Schiernbeck and Mason are running well right now and should be pretty solid in the longer races. Senior Hanna Veit has also been running well. “We might have decent distance medley and 4x800 relays. It is just too early to tell.” High jump-“Durbin is a returning state champ, but we also have a number
of good high jumpers in Dausel, Miller and freshman Liz Zobel.” Long jump-“Wareham and Lindner are back. There might also be a couple of younger kids in the long jump. We’ll have to wait and see how it pans out. We would like to find another long jumper to go with Wareham who can clear 15 feet.” Shot and discus-“Junior Bethany Rehse is our number one thrower at this point of the season. Hopefully, we can have some other kids step up and get a few more points in the throws for us.” Saunders said he won’t discuss too many goals with his girls until after they have a couple of meets under their belts, but he did note the team goals remain the same from season to season. “We want to win the conference and send as many events as possible to state.” Last season, Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central snapped the Falcons fouryear run as conference champions. Saunders said K-P/WC will be a major obstacle to over come again this season. “K-P/WC will have another outstanding team this year,” said Saunders. “Hopefully, we will be healthy when the conference meet comes around and we
can stay close to them. “I don’t know a whole lot about the other teams. L-B has an up and coming team and Ridge View always has a number of good athletes.” In addition to Saunders, who serves as head girls’ coach and works with the hurdlers and high jumpers, the team coaches are Travis Chizek (throws and head boys’ track coach), Andrea Nielsen (distance runners and long jumpers), Tony Napierela (sprints) and Holly Neutzman (middle distance). Falcon golf boys return experienced team What a difference a year makes. Last year, the O-A/BC-IG boys’ golf team was in a rebuilding mode as just two letter winners were on the roster. Entering the 2017 season, the Falcons feature seven letter winners from a team that placed second in the Western Valley Conference championship tournament. Among the letter winners is senior Brandon Schwade, who was the conference championship tournament runner-up medalist in 2016 and medalist in 2015. The Falcons’ other returning letter winners are senior Devon Fritz, juniors Ty Warnke, Ethan Zobel and Kurtis Krager and sophomores Landon Ray and Reed Godbersen. Schwade and Ray were first team all-
conference performers in 2016 while Warnke made the second team. Coach Kurt Hofmeister also listed junior Blake Anderson and sophomores Kolton Krajicek and Kaden Ladwig as golfers who could play at the varsity level this season. The rest of the roster includes: Seniors—Andrew Mace and Rhett Ketelsen. Junior—Austin Newquist. Freshmen—Tyler Ehrig, Wyatt Wunschel, Troy Hillmer, Austin Wardrip, Jace Krayenhagen and Gavin Parks. Even with an experienced group back on the course, Hofmeister said there is room for improvement. “We have most everyone back from last year, so I would like to see us improve in a lot of ways this year. That would include bet-
ter team scores for our meets and better places in meets and tournaments. Just in general, I would like to see individual improvement over last year.” Hofmeister listed several goals for this year’s team. The list includes win the conference title; win the conference tournament; place first or second at the O-A/BC-IG Invitational tournament and advance from sectionals to districts as a team. The coach pointed to his club and Woodbury Central as the top two teams in the WVC. The Falcons will get a better understanding of where they stand in the conference when they play the first of five league tournaments next Monday, April 3, in Onawa. O-A/BC-IG boys’ golf

the girls on the team and a decision on who will ill out the varsity roster has not been made. The coach noted one of his goals is for his girls to play better as a team than last season. “Our primary goal right now is to be better than we were last year. We kind of faltered a bit last season,” said Hartwig. Hartwig pointed to West Monona and Westwood as the top two teams in the conference. “West Monona lost just one girl from their team that quali ied for state in 2016,” said Hartwig. “They return one of the best golfers in the conference in Sam Knight who automatically gives them a six to seven stroke advantage at each meet. “Westwood also has most of their girls back.” Hartwig added while West Monona and Westwood appear to be the front-runners in the WVC, no team can be counted out at this point of the season. “What makes golf unpredictable at this point is you don’t know which girls may come back out and you don’t know which teams may have an up and coming golfer.” The Falcons will get a handle on where they stand in the conference when they open the season next Monday with the irst of ive league tournaments. Depth, versatility hallmarks of Raptor boys
Ridge View Raptor boys’ track and field coach Dale Tokheim points to his team’s depth and versatility as team strengths as the Raptors eye the annual Ridge View Relays, which marks the opening of the outdoor track and field season, this Friday, March 31. “We have 27 out for track and most of our guys can run anything from a 100 to an 800 and be competitive,” noted Tokheim. “We will have several strong 200 and 400 runners and that will give us a chance to compete all year long, including at state. We will also be very strong in the hurdling events and Jon Pickhinke will give us a lot of points in the distance races.” While the running events look to be solid, Tokheim has some concerns about the field events. “We have questions in all of our field events,” said Tokheim. “The long jump has three or four guys who have competed for the varsity and scored some points, but the rest of the field events are concerns. We have some big strong throwers and I hope they can improve to score some points. We lost our best high jumpers from last year due to injuries to Cole Degen and Evan Leuschen. “Another weakness will be the 800s. We need to get some guys to believe they can do it and hopefully we can be competitive in the mid distances by the end of the year.” The coach added the team has some individuals that have improved from last year. He noted several athletes have worked hard in the strength and conditioning program all year and hopefully that pays off in the
sprint and throwing events. Tokheim said the overall success of the team will depend on how health and how hard the individual athletes push themselves. Among the top performers, and Tokheim thoughts on those individuals, returning this season are: Senior Juan Nava (200-800s)—He ran on the 4x400 team that placed fifth at state last year and also qualified for state in the open 400 and on the 4x800 team. Nava is also one of our fastest sprinters. Junior Andres Carbajal (200-800s and hurdles)—Carbajal placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at state and was on the state 4x400 team that placed fifth at state last year. He also ran on the shuttle hurdle team that qualified for state. Senior Caden Wandrey (100 to 800s)— Wandrey was on the 4x400 team that placed fifth at state last year. He is also one of our best sprinters. Senior Jon Pickhinke (1,600-3,200)— Pickhinke placed at the conference meet and at districts last year. He could compete at districts for a chance to make it to state this year. Sophomore Jacob Tokheim (100 to 800s)—Tokheim had our best 200 time last year and was an alternate on the 4x400 state team. Senior Ryan McGuire (100 to 400s)— McGuire is coming into the track season healthy for the first time since he was a freshman. We are looking for him to have a breakout year. He also placed in a lot of meets in the long jump.
Sophomore Jake Kliegl lettered last year and should help us in the sprints and throws. Senior Tyler Wingert will compete in the sprints and hurdles. Junior Jake Mitchell should be strong in the sprints up to a 400. Sophomore Kevin McGuire will compete for some sprint relay spots and in the long jump. Sophomore Austin Degen will compete in a wide variety of things from hurdles, sprints, the 800 and the long jump. Sophomore—Logan Cuthrell will be looking to compete at the varsity level in anything from 100s to 800s. “We have a strong group of hurdlers including two guys who were on the shuttle relay team that qualified for state (Carbajal and Cole Degen),” said Tokheim. “Ryan McGuire, Wingert and Austin Degen will also compete for a spot on the shuttle hurdle relay team. “We have a couple of sophomore throwers returning in Ezra Miller and Nick Gisch. Kliegl will also throw this year. We hope they can improve from last year and score us some points.” Tokheim said there are several new comers to the team who might help the Raptors score varsity points. “Senior Evan Else and sophomore Andrew Brockman will push our throwers,” noted Tokheim. “Randy Redding is a senior who will run 100’s to 800’s. “Juniors Jaxon Franken, Lance Else and Josh Frahm will be a big help to the team.
Franken could literally run anything for us. Else will probably run anything from a 100 to an 800 and Frahm will be doing some sprints, hurdles and the high jump. “Sophomore Don Moore will compete in the sprints and is looking very strong. “Freshman Dylan Wood will run anything from the 100 to 800. Chance Hansen will probably give us some help in the middle distance. Alex Movall and Isaac Jepsen will be some utility runners for us.” As a team, Ridge View won the class 1A state qualifying meet in 2016 and placed fourth in the WVC. Tokheim said KingsleyPierson/Woodbury Central is the “frontrunner” in the conference race this season. “I think O-A/BC-IG and Ridge View will close the gap a little this year on KP-WC and will push them if we can improve in a few events. Lawton-Bronson is another solid team that will be fighting to be in the top three.” Tokheim’s assistant coach is Matt Best. Ridge View girls’ track squad continues to grow
The largest track and field squad in several years is giving coach Angie Kohn reason for optimism as the Raptor girls prepare for the opening of the 2017 outdoor season this Friday at the Ridge View Relays in Holstein. “This is the largest squad we’ve had in at least eight years,” noted Kohn. “We also have a variety of athletes to fill out the team’s competition events with quality. We have some great leaders in all areas, vocal, performance, visual and character as well as the team char, acters.” The Raptors return a pair of events that placed at the state meet in 2016. Paige Todd placed 14th in the long jump (15-6) and the 4x400 relay team of Todd, Emerson Else, Abbi Hansen and Kinzey Dutler that placed 16th with a time of 4:17. Ridge View also returns several other top performers from last season including sprinters Beth Pickhinke and Lexi Phillips; hurdlers Madeline Else and Kennedy Mason, and distance runners Rachel Kenney, Erin Johnson and Macy Wunschel. Kohn also listed several girls who she is looking at to fill varsity roles. The group includes freshman Katlyn Wiese who placed 37th at the state cross country meet. She will join Johnson and Kenney in the long distance races. Kohn added that McKenna Albers, Hanna Blackmore and Sara Stamp (all freshmen) are doing a “great job” hurdling so far this season and are both 400 and 800 runners. Kara Richard (sophomore) and Kenzee Wunschel (freshman) will be the top two girls to fill in the throwing spots. Megan Wiese, who was a state qualifier in the shot and discus in 2016, is now throwing at Iowa
State. Kaylynn Luscombe (shot and discus) also graduated last year. While this year’s team shows a lot of promise, the team is also young. A majority of the team is either sophomores or freshmen. Kohn noted the infusion of 10 freshmen is helpful, but there is also a learning curve for the younger athletes.” “Among our concerns are getting the freshmen to perform at their best in each of their events,” said Kohn. “We also need them to understand that their times/distances/places from junior high (which were winning events) may not win at the high school level.” Ridge View placed fourth in the conference meet in 2016. Coach Kohn said her squad should finish in the upper division of the meet again this season. “We should end up in the top five again,” said Kohn. “It all depends on how well we develop over the season and what other teams are able to compete with. We will put our best teams and individuals on the track and in the field and then we will wait to see what competition brings out of the athletes. “We do have some quality runners, but our field events may not double up in points this year. The ability to fill out a full meet roster will help us score team points.” The following is Kohn’s assessment of her team by events. Sprints and hurdles: “We will be successful in sprints. We just missed winning the 4x200 at the state qualifying meet last year and those girls are set on improving their time and getting to run on the blue oval. “Our hurdles are starting to turn around. We just might be able to fill a shuttle hurdle relay this year.
We’ve only had one or two girls who could hurdle in recent years, so the shuttle hurdle was an event that we didn’t get points in.” Middle distance: “We will be strongest in our 400s and 800s. Luckily, our freshmen were very strong during their junior high years in the 4x400 and the 4x800. These young girls are used to success and used to running quality times at these distances.” Long distance events: “Our cross country team has helped us tremendously in this aspect. Our long distance runners were set on running as a team at state. They are not unfamiliar with long runs and hard work.” Field events: “Our long jumper, Paige Todd, has state jumping experience, but has had some problems with her foot in the off season, so I’m not sure how well the strength in her plant foot will be. Time will only tell. “High jump is an unanswered question for us yet, I am not sure if we will even have a jumper.” Ridge View will compete in class 1A this season. Ridge View girls’ golfers shoot for improvement
Heading into the early portion of the 2017 golf season the Ridge View’s girls’ golf team has just three members. The team is composed of sophomore Kennedy Mason, who earned all-conference honors in 2016, junior Julie Wood and freshman Rayann Volkert. Mason and Wood both earned letters last season. Coach Brian Bode noted, “Our goal for the team is to shoot a lower score each meet. We’d like to have our individual golfers finish in the top 20 of the conference. “I would also like to see improvement from meet to meet. We need to maintain consistency in our approach and become more confident as we get closer to the hole.” Ridge View will open the season Monday, April 3, when River Valley will host the first of five conference meets in Correctionville. Bode pointed to West Monona and Woodbury Central as the top two teams in the WVC this season. Coach Chad Hustedt noted the letter winners along with Wunschel will be in the six-man varsity rotation this season. “We currently have around 11 golfers out this season,” noted Hustedt. “That number will give the kids a nice opportunity to play a lot this year. “We have a nice group of leaders coming back to the team this season. We are looking to improve our scores from last year and continue to be competitive in the conference. “Half of the team is made up of freshmen so it will take some time to groom their skills to compete at the varsity level.” Hustedt added he likes the attitude of his players. “All of my players are very coachable and eager to learn the game of golf. All of our drills are competitive,
which I think brings the best out of each player and prepares them for meets.” Hustedt listed some of the goals for this year’s team. “Our biggest goal is to compete annually in the conference tournament. We want to place in the top three in all conference meets, compete every week and better our scores each meet.” Ridge View boys golf April 3 WVC tour. at Onawa 4 Cherokee/OABCIG at Holstein 6 KP/RView/WW at MVAO 10 WVC tour. at Moville 11 Newell-Fonda 18 WVC golf tour. at Holstein 20 A-A/L-B/WC at Holstein 24 WVC tour. at Mapleton May 1 WVC Tour. at Correctionville 8 WVC tour at Le Mars 12 Boys’ sectional (TBA) 19 Boys’ dist.
