Ida Grove Golf & Country Club: 100 Years
Ida Grove’s golf course, with its natural water trap (the Odebolt Creek) and medievalesque bridge, has been a staple in the recreation of community members. The course residents have come to know features nine regulation holes with a 36 par, a stately club house and convenient cart storage. While it isn’t a far cry from the course of yore, it has evolved. Several young businessmen of the town gathered together in July 1916 to discuss the matter of a golf and country club. When the group put in a paper to secure members, the offer of a 100-acre tract of land had been made to the promoters. The club organized that September, featuring Julius Rohwer, president; Joe Murphy, vice president; Dr. Paul Curry, secretary; Dr. S. A. Deming, treasurer and Lawrence Kiernan, Wm. Suiter and R. E. Lipton, executive committee. The city park that existed at the time was cleaned up and smoothed out to be used as golf links, the Odebolt Creek serving as its outer border; membership cost $3. It would be another decade before the irst club house was built on the grounds. In September 1927, funds for the club house were raised in two days of can-
vassing and was formally opened on May 31, 1928. It lay northeast of the ninth green, at the time, and Dr. T. E. Hart, president, presided as toastmaster. Charles Pottiger was the irst man to make a hole-in-one on the course. Over the years, more people would frequent the course. Don Schafer, who started playing the game in 1940, said Sunday tournaments would draw upwards of 100 individual golfers ranging from Sioux City, Fort Dodge and Denison. Rain seemed to be an issue for the golf course throughout its era. Tom Odgaard recalls the course looding on a yearly basis until the dike project was done in

the 1950s-1960s. It wasn’t long until golf became a high school sport. The land on the north side of the creek was added to expand the course by two more holes. Shortly thereafter, plans for a new club house were drawn where the original clubhouse was. Schafer and Odgaard recall Byron Godbersen stepping in to help build the new club house, which is the one used today. Cart storage takes the place vacated by the old club house. Stag and ladies’ nights at the Ida Grove Golf and Country Club were, and still are, crowd drawing forms of entertainment for many golfers in the area. As it was when the course was irst created, it is served by an avid board. Today’s board includes Hank Jessen, president; Jeff Kohn, vice president and
greens; Dean Renfro, secretary; Wilson’s Bookkeeping and Tax Service, treasurer; Jacob Jessen, Keith Vermeys and Jeremy Parks, house; Charlie Luke, Shawn Cadwell and Kevin Christie, greens and Mike Ray, general manager. The Ida Grove Country Club is planning events to celebrate a century of golf at the links this summer.
