Pitching depth, returning veterans to be hallmarks of Falcon baseball club O-A/BC-IG baseball coach Dan Dotzler says a strong returning core of players and pitching depth will provide a solid foundation for the 2017 season. The Falcons return 10 letter winners to the 23-man roster including seniors Adam Grote (P/INF) who earned irst team all conference in 2016; Rhett Ketelsen (OF) a second team all conference selection and Gabe Malcom (OF/P) who is a twoyear starter. Underclassmen who lettered in 2016 include juniors Tyler Anderson (INF/P), Blake Anderson (INF/P), Ryder Meek (INF/UTL.) and Austin Newquist (OF/INF) and sophomores Landon Ray (INF) and Ethan Mortensen (P/INF) and freshman William Grote (C/INF/P). All of the letter winners started in some capacity last season. “It all starts on the mound and I feel good about our depth this year,” said Dotzler. “Gone is all-state pitcher Ben Dotzler who compiled a 24-6 career pitching mark for the Falcons, but I’m con ident in the returning players and potential for the pitching staff. I think with the new pitch count limit and required days of rest, teams with depth on the mound will be the ones that come out on top in the end. “Our mound duties this year will be anchored by Adam Grote, Mortensen, Tyler Anderson and Blake Anderson. We have several other returning position players that will possibly be able give us some innings on the mound, including sophomore Kaden Ladwig, Ray, William Grote and sophomores Jacob Cowlham and Ethan Young. “It’s going to be all about throwing strikes and being as ef icient as possible and being able to ield the ball when it is put in play. There is a good group of guys who can throw on this team; it’s just a matter of iguring who can step in and throw strikes consistently. Overall, the varsity experience gained by the group

of letter winners last year should be bene icial as we progress through the year.” The non-letter winners on the team include senior Brandon Schwade, sophomores Ethan Young, Kaden Ladwig, Grant Conover, Jacob Cowlham and Devin Behrendsen, freshmen Tevin Harms, Nathan Benner, Philip Brooks, Isaac Newquist and Troy Hillmer and eighth grader Cooper DeJean. Tyler Johnson is the team’s assistant coach. Coach Dotzler stated the key to the season will depend on how well the players can execute defensively and how well they can hit the ball. “A good hitting team can cover up a lot of mistakes; and it will be important to put pressure on other teams’ defense by consistently putting the ball in play,” noted Dotzler. “On the lip side, it is going to be necessary to ield the ball when it is put in play to limit our pitch counts. “From a pitching standpoint, it has always been about throwing strikes; however, now, more than ever, it will be crucial to get people out with minimal pitches. We simply cannot walk batters if we are going to be successful.” Offensively, Dotzler noted three out of the top ive hitters (batting averages) from a year ago are returning in Adam Grote, Ketelsen and Mortensen. The coach added several younger players got some great experience last year and it should pay dividends for this year’s team. Returning in ielders that will compete for positions are Adam Grote, Ray, Tyler Anderson, Blake Anderson, Austin Newquist, and Meek. There are additional returning JV players and newcomers that will also compete for in ield positions. Players expected to compete for out ield positions include Ketelsen, Austin Newquist, Adam Grote, Schwade, Conover and Meek. Dotzler noted William Grote started at catcher most of last season and

did a “remarkable job” as an eighth grader. “As a coaching staff, we have to igure out who can succeed defensively at what position and what is best for the team. Then it will come down to who is on the mound and who can be most consistent on a day to day basis offensively,” said Dotzler. The head coach listed several goals he has for his ball club. “The early goal will be to build some team unity and get everyone to play with some enthusiasm,” said Dotzler. “We would like to be in position to compete for a conference championship and make a good run at the end of the season. “I have set some speci ic goals for the kids again this year as a team. We inished third (in the conference)

last year and played two very close games in the conference championship series, including a loss to Lawton-Bronson 6-4 and a win over Woodbury Central 8-7. It will be our goal to make the conference championship series again. “Timing of the conference tourney is not good for 2A teams as it interferes pitching wise with district play; however, you always want to be in the mix for a title. We will see how it works out, but all the goals we have internally established are very attainable. We want the boys to play competitively and be in a position to win every night out.” The coach said MV-A-O, Woodbury Central and Lawton-Bronson have been the top teams in the WVC the See FALCON BASEBALL: page 3

more about – (continued from previous page) last couple of years and he expects they will be very competitive again. Dotzler added Ridge View with coach Shannon Tesch is always competitive and he expects Kingsley-Pierson and West Monona will also have very solid teams this year. “The Western Valley Conference has been a generally tough baseball conference,” said Dotzler. “All of our conference teams will be capable of beating anyone on a given night, depending on who is pitching. Every conference opponent has some good pitching, and it will depend on who you run into.” Dotzler noted the Falcons were 9-1 at home last year. “Our boys like playing in our park. We have one of the nicest parks in the conference and our boys seemed to respond well at home. We need to

take that same determination and energy on the road with us this year.” The Falcons will play a 16-game conference schedule again and the overall schedule will approach 25 games in a seven-week span. Improved pitching to help O-A/BC-IG softball team According to O-A/BC-IG softball coach Cindy Wilcke, both of the team’s young pitchers have come a long way in the offseason and their improvement bodes well for the 2017 ballclub. “Our pitching is de initely going to be our strong point,” said Wilcke. “Ellie Dotzler and Halle Hemer have worked hard over the off season and have gained considerable strength and endurance. We have a great foundation to build on and I look forward to a much improved season.” Wilcke noted while the pitchers have improved they will need to rely on good defense to back them up. “Our defense needs to be stronger and we need to do a better job of standing behind our pitchers and make the fundamental plays,” noted Wilcke. “We were in almost every game last year up to the ifth inning. This year, we have another year’s experience under our belt and we have great leadership. Our con idence is up and I look for this season to be a lot of fun.” The coach said the offense will also have to improve in order for the Falcons to have a successful season. “Last year we hit the ball, but we seemed to have trouble getting it out of the in ield. We are addressing our hitting and focusing on areas of concern. We are another year older and hopefully stronger so I look for improved hitting as well.” Wilcke has nine returning letter winners, which includes seven returning starters. The veteran players are (*indicates returning starter) seniors Carrie Miller* (C), Summit Nielsen* (SS), Bree Henningsen* (OF) and Baylee Knop* (1B); juniors Bailey Ullrich (OF) and Jordan Hedberg* (2B); sophomores Elle Dotzler* and Kirsten Dausel (OF) and freshman Halle Hemer (P). Freshman Kylie Weber (C) also lettered last season, but will miss the 2017 season due to a knee injury. Other players who Wilcke listed as varsity squad contenders include sophomore Kelsey Dausel (IF) and freshmen Sarah Petersen (OF) and Abby Bender (OF). Wilcke added she plans to bring up one or two additional younger players to use as base runners.

The rest of the roster includes: Freshmen—Skylar Mackey, Shae Baker, Greysenne Hoe ling, Rylie Hedberg, Taylor Beck, Ryder Cranston, Kacie Mandernach, Corin Bower and Cora Hansen. Eighth graders—Jersey Bender, Marley Hewitt, Megan Brummer, Amber Hoe ling, Joie Matthies, Bella Raasch, Elle Schroeder, Anna Winterrowd, Morgan Godbersen and Carli Ullrich. Wilcke’s assistant coach is Chancey Wilcke. “I believe in setting high goals and working hard to accomplish these goals,” said Wilcke. “Naturally, we want to have a winning season and make a good run at the conference title. I think this team can accomplish anything they set their minds to. “I want them to get a taste of winning and to hate losing as much as I do. Ultimately, it’s up to the girls and all of them wanting the same thing.” The coach said the Western Valley Conference is “extremely tough” and on any given day any team can beat any other team. “I do look for West Monona to have another great year,” said Wilcke. Raptor softball team counts on letter winners Ridge View’s softball team returns nine letter winners from last year’s team that posted an 11-22 record. Raptor coach Scott Phelps said the team enters the season with high expectations and a lot of excitement. “Our returning letter winners saw a lot of playing time and gained a lot of experience last season,” noted Phelps. “We must replace three valuable players lost from last year’s squad in Kaylee Blenner (SS) Emily Egger (P/3B) and Megan Wiese (1B). These kids were good players and good leaders and will be missed. “We think we have some young players ready to step up and take the challenge to replace them, but it won’t be easy and time will tell if they can do the job.” All of the Raptor letter winners are underclassmen. There are no seniors on the roster. Ridge View’s returning letter winners are juniors Beth Pickhinke (C/ CF) and Katie Brinkman (P/2B); sophomores Emerson Else (P/2B), Kinzey Dutler (SS/RF), Kara Richard (C), Beth Meyer (1B/P), Kennedy Mason (C/3B), Madeline Else (OF) and Gracie Chance (3B/2B). Other players who could see varsity playing time include sophomore Rachel Kenny (2B/OF/C) and freshmen Sarah Stamp (3B), Katlyn Wiese (OF), Cassie Allen (P/SS), Taylor Major (IF) and Jordan Grothe (OF). Eighth graders on the team are Alexis Turnquist, Autumn Hinkle, Cora Devitt and Mabel Brockman. Phelps’ assistant coach is Matt Best. Phelps noted this year’s squad has 19 kids out and they are all working hard to improve and put together a good season. “The kids have good passion for the game and we are excited about their desire to improve, but time will tell how much they improve,” said Phelps. “How well we do will be determined how disciplined and dedicated our kids are to the program. Our kids have been working hard in the off-season with our strength/conditioning and agilities program. We believe we can put quality athletes out

on the ield.” Phelps added he is looking forward to the season. “This is a fun group of kids to work with, they have passion for the game and they are determined to be successful,” said Phelps. “This year’s squad will be a competitive group of athletic kids. This group of kids is very lexible as they can play many different positions, which gives us many options.” Overall, Phelps noted this year’s team is a good hitting squad with a good group of pitchers and good foot speed. Areas Phelps has some questions about entering the season are consistent pitching and defense (cutting out the errors), discipline at the plate, leadership, staying focused, staying healthy and getting off to good starts each game. Phelps noted there will be no easy games in the conference this season. “I look at the WVC as being one of the toughest conferences in the state with many teams returning a lot of their players back from last year. We will have to perform at a high level on a consistent basis to be successful.” RV softball May 23 ....................at Kingsley-Pierson 25 ............................................OABCIG 26 .......................... at West Monona 30 ................................................MVAO June 1 ........................Woodbury Central 2 ......................at Lawton-Bronson 3 .............................at Sheldon Tour. 5 ............................at Newell-Fonda 6 ......................................River Valley 7 ...........................Kingsley-Pierson 8 ........................................ Raptors build around four letter winners Ridge View’s baseball team will work on developing experience as it enters the 2017 season. The Raptors lost 11 seniors to graduation in 2016 and return just four letter winners from last year’s 12-17 team. Letter winners who return from last year’s team are senior Cole Degen (P/OF) and juniors Jaxon Franken (P/C), Jake Mitchell (P/3B/ SS) and sophomore Jake Tokheim (P/2B/SS). Franken and Mitchell are returning starters. Mitchell hit .314 last season with 20 RBI. Franken had a .267 batting average. Other players who Tesch is counting on to ill varsity roles are senior Tyler Wingert (OF), juniors Colin Cuthrell (P/1B) and Jakob Kai (C), sophomores Logan Cuthrell (OF), Austin Degen (P/UT) and Karlo Weldon (1B/3B) and eighth grader Caleb Kistenmacher (P/SS). The rest of the roster includes sophomores Brant Price, Devin Hare and Brayden Miller; freshmen Logan Gross and Dylan Wood and eighth graders Nic Cedeno and Ben Spina. Tesch, who is in his 10th year as coach at Galva-Holstein/Ridge View, sports a 135-122 record. The team’s assistant coaches are Brian Hoeppner and Caleb Christensen. “Our in ield defense will be a strength,” noted coach Tesch. “On paper, our in ield looks to be one of the strongest we’ve had at Ridge View.” Tesch added the team does have some areas to improve on. “We are not a very experienced team. We only return two varsity starters from last year. As a result, I think it will take us some time to adjust to hitting at the varsity level. “Pitching depth could be an issue. We have some young arms, which are developing nicely. We’ll just have to see how quickly they are ready for varsity action.” The coach noted one of the team goals this season is to qualify for the Western Valley Conference tournament championship bracket. “Our goal is to inish in the top four of the WVC. Finishing in the top four means we would compete in the

championship series.” Tesch listed Lawton-Bronson, MVA-O and Woodbury Central as the top teams in the WVC entering the season. “We like to play fundamental, up tempo baseball,” said Tesch. “We want to play fast and aggressive. We believe if we can do the little things right and play the game one pitch at a time, we can have a lot of success.” RV baseball May 23..................at Kingsley-Pierson 25.........................................
