We may be SMALL, but we’re doing BIG things in Ida County. There are reasons businesses grow so well in our county of less than 10,000. A highly educated workforce. Strong community support. Welcome

to

Ida County

The first surveyors running the township lines in 1851 chose the name “Ida” for the new county. Fires from the Indians’ camps on a high hill, west of where Ida Grove was later established, reminded them of the story of the vestal fires on Mount Ida in Greece. A stagecoach trail was established through Ida County on January 24, 1855. The trail

connected Ida County to Sac and Woodbury Counties. In 1856, J.H. Moorehead and E.Comstock, along with their families, settled in Ida Grove on the Maple River. The “grove of trees” beside the Moorehead home was the crossroads of at least five small stage lines. The Moorehead house (now the Stagecoach Inn) is a physical reminder of Ida County

and Ida Grove’s beginning. The first post office in Ida County was established on July 21, 1857 at Judge Moorehead’s home. Ida County was organized in October 1858, and the population numbered 38 people. The pioneers started the first town in Ida County, east of the Stagecoach Inn in 1877. The Village of Ida contained 16 blocks.

Law Enforcement Ida County operates under a unified law enforcement system. Each of the five incorporated communities in the county contract with the Sheriff for their law enforcement and communications services. These services include law enforcement officers responding to citizen complaints, the dispatching of emergency services and the investigation of all crime that occurs in the county. Due to the shared and streamlined delivery of law enforcement in Ida County, taxpayers have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars since its inception in 1976. Unified law enforcement in Ida County has been an example to other cities and counties in Iowa on how shared law enforcement can be successfully accomplished and maintained. Wade Harriman is currently serving as the Ida County Sheriff. He was first elected by the citizens of Ida County in 1998, and has been re-elected five times since then. He is proud to serve as the 20th Sheriff in the history of Ida County. He works alongside a dedicated staff of 16 full-time employees, which includes deputy sheriff’s, communications center operators and civilian jailers. In 2009 the Sheriff’s Office remodeled and expanded the jail facility. This project increased the number of beds in the jail to a maximum of 13, and has allowed the Sheriff’s Office to more securely ensure the safety

of the citizens of Ida County, the staff at the Sheriff’s Office and the inmate population. There are currently two K-9 units on patrol who aggressively enforce the narcotics laws of the State of Iowa, and two DARE officers on staff who annually provide the DARE curriculum to all 5th grade students in the Ida County. The Sheriff is proud of all the services he and his staff provide to the citizens of Ida County and he looks forward to continuing these services into the future.

Arthur

With more people settling in the area, it became apparent that there was a need for a community between Odebolt and Ida Grove. In 1884, the railroad had planned a town on a farm one-half mile west of today’s Arthur and named it after the President of the United States, at the time, Chester Alan Arthur. Equal sections were created for the section crews and, in 1885, the present town site of Arthur was platted. Commissioners were appointed to circulate incorportation petitions and the town was to hold an

election on the matter of town incorportation. With a population of 127 at the time the vote was held, excluding women and non-citizens as they held no vote. Twenty-six signed for the incorporation and the town of Arthur was incoporated in 1897. Since then, Arthur has added a bank, gas station, grain elevator, library and, most recently, an ethanol plant, all of which line Highway 175. The ethanol plant, Flint Hills Resources, a Koch company, has become one of the area’s larger employers since its inception in 2008.

Public Library The Arthur Public Library was first located in the basement of the Ida County State Bank in Arthur. The library continued to add more items and eventually outgrew the original building and moved to the cement block building on First Street. It remained there with Margaret Sharkey as librarian until 1985. The Arthur Community Building was built on

Main Street and included a room for the library in the front. Volunteers helped move the books to their new shelves before it opened on April 27, 1985. In the summer of 2006 the library expanded to the front half of the Community Building, doubling the size of the space. Going beyond books, the library offers four public computers as well as audiobooks, movies, magazines and locoal newspapers.

Battle Creek In the 1860’s a stalwart group of pioneers came over a hill and discovered a lush green valley where a gentle stream flowed into a beautiful river. The banks were lined with trees, mostly willow and maple. One excited fellow cried out, “This is my dream come true!” They called it Bluff Dale, and slowly, other early settlers seeking their fortunes found Bluff Dale to their liking. When the Civil War was over, the lure of land grants and the fertile soil brought about a rapid increase in the population of the area. A gristmill was built and the village became an important center for farmers in the region to bring their grain. As Bluff Dale grew it was decided they should have a more dignified name and Willow Dale was chosen. In 1877 when the railroad laid tracks just a short distance northwest of them the people were growing tired of facing occasional flooding and decided to move the entire settlement. They moved lock, stock, and barrel, including most of their buildings, and relocated along the railroad tracks where they built a depot. They became the hub of the livestock business with area farmers herding their livestock in for shipment to Chicago. Other businesses followed and Willow Dale became a thriving “boom” town. There was already a Willow Dale elsewhere in Iowa so another name change became necessary. Stories had long been told of a fierce battle that took place in 1849 between a group of government surveyors and the Sioux Indians on a hill east of the town. The site became known as Battle Hill and the creek and the town took the name Battle Creek. Through the

years many human bones and relics have been found indicating the truth of the battle stories and a stone monument along the highway pays homage to the historical event. We provide our people with almost all the basic necessities and what we don’t have is nearby. We have great volunteer fire and ambulance departments, two active churches, a wonderful nursing home/ rehabilitation center with assisted living apartments, recreation facilities include a community building/ library, three city parks, a walking trail, and a manmade lake called Crawford Creek a few miles south. The Inn at Battle Creek is a popular bed and breakfast with gourmet dining for private parties in a beautifully restored Victorian house. Lohff’s estate was to be given to the City of Holstein “for the purposes of construction and/or maintenance of a community center”. At the time of that announcement the bequest to the city totaled $835,909. In April of 1995, the first organized meeting for the center was held with 14 selected members present. After considering 11 possible sites for the center, a site was purchased from just south of town near highways 20 and 59. Surrounded by a nine-hole golf course and outdoor tennis courts, the plan was to create an entire sports complex with the addition of 2 ball fields and a walking/biking trail in the future. In June, plans were approved for a 12,480 sq. foot building to be named the Lohff-Schumann Memorial Community Center. The grand opening was held on July 19, 1997, with a

5K run, flag raising ceremony, membership discounts, a welcoming speech from the current City Mayor, Mary Gross and a ribbon cutting. The doors opened, complete with a community room and full kitchen, game room, men’s and women’s locker rooms, sauna, hot tub, lounge, an atrium for snacks and refreshments, full sized gymnasium, an exercise room, and administration offices. The most recent change, and probably one of the biggest structural changes, took place in 2014 with a facility remodel. The remodel included the addition of a children’s play area, filled with activities for young children to run around safely while their parents workout. A remodeled and updated cardio room, equipped with treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical trainers, Jacobs Ladder, Nu-step, & rowing machine. The elimination of one of the two racquetball rooms within the facility, allowed for the addition of a larger weight room equipped with weight equipment for all fitness levels. And with the elimination of the upstairs storage area, we were able to add a fitness room where all fitness classes are held, along with youth gymnastics classes. Although, a lot has changed in 20 years, Ms. Lohff’s original vision to serve the residents of Holstein has always remained the same and we continue to look forward to what the future holds for the center and its

community as we celebrate 20 years of spreading health and wellness

Stubbs Memorial Library Mysterious characters and lands of enchantment are just a few of the things you can find lining the shelves of the Stubbs Memorial Library. Founded in 1948, known then as the Holstein Public Library, it was one of the projects of the Holstein Women’s Club and the Nacirema Club. It was 1950 when Ethel Stubbs took on the title of librarian, a role she would keep until 1972. The library had recently been moved from the old fire station to a room furnished by the Holstein State Bank where it remained until 1961 when the city council remodeled a room in Turner Hall for the library. It became apparent, in 1974, that the location in Turner Hall was not equipped to handle the increasing services the Holstein Public Library had to offer. The board initiated a drive for private funds. A memorial gift from Stubbs in honor of her late husband, and long-time area veterinarian, Dr. R.L. Stubbs, to the tune of $50,000 breathed life into the fund, along with substantial sums from other area families. Contributions from local businesses and hundreds of individuals helped make the Stubbs Memorial Library a reality. The lot at 209 East Second Street was donated to the city, and the move from Turner Hall was completed in January 1975. Stubbs Memorial Library was dedicated on April 6,

1975, and has been Holstein’s public library ever since. Public Swimming Pool The community swimming pool has been a central feature in Holstein’s attractions since its construction in 1939. The large outdoor pool promotes recreational and social opportunities for all ages and levels of swimming ability. Through a long affiliation with the Red Cross, the pool offers all levels of the Learn to Swim program, as well as classes for Lifeguard and WSI certification.

Town and Country Golf and Recreation Area Known to locals as the Holstein Country Club, or simply “The Club,” the area features a pond, where fishing is allowed, established trees, and well-groomed greens. The club house has a deck that surrounds half of the building, overlooking our scenic pond and par 3 fourth hole. The course is a par 35, coming in at a length of 3,152 yards from the longest tees. It boasts a practice green, as well as an area to hone your driving or iron game. Our club is a bit unusual, we break tradition by being open year round; only closing on Mondays in the winter months. Our 360 social and/or golf members help to support the facility. The course also serves as the venue for the annual Tim Thomas Invitational high school cross country meet in which several area schools participate. There are also club facilities to rent for just about any occasion, such as graduations, showers, anniversaries, business meetings, or wedding receptions. Our Course Superintendent, Aaron Nedved, was named the 2016 Iowa 9-hole Course Superintendent of the Year. Nedved takes great pride in how the course looks and plays. In the summer of 1965, Charles “Chuck” Kofmehl had the thought of building a golf course in Holstein. However, due to the lack of funds needed to build the course, the idea was tabled. The golf course dream was brought to life with the gracious aid of many community members who volunteered time, labor, and equipment. Approximately 600 trees were planted and a dam was constructed to create a pond. The rest is history, and now we have one of the finest golf courses in all of northwest Iowa. Please, come and enjoy a round or two of golf, or grab your favorite beverage and sit on the deck to take in the beautiful view. For more details, give the club a call at 712-368-2530.

Ida Grove

In the fall of 1877, the arrival of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad caused much excitement in the county. The old town of Ida Grove was on the north side of the river near the junction of the Odebolt Creek and the Maple River but once the railroad was built, a new town was laid out on the south side of the railroad tracks. Soon new business places and homes could be

seen. Many of the business buildings in the Village of Ida were hitched to a team of horses and dragged to the new town site. With the official incorporation of Ida Grove on May 31, 1878, residents enjoyed meeting land seekers and travelers, often bragging that Ida County was the garden spot of the world.

Castle Town Byron Godbersen, founder and former owner of Midwest Industries liked castles and implemented this into the buildings built by his employees. Lake LaJune, appropriately named after Byron’s wife, LaJune, was constructed in 1969. The eight-acre lake, once just an Iowa cornfield, is a private lake. During the spring of 1971, the stone towered suspension bridge was built to span the Odebolt Creek as it winds its way through Ida Grove and the golf course. Once completed, a castle-turreted gate was built to greet visitors at the east side of town on Hwy 175. The third civic project for 1971 was the Ida Grove Country Club, less than a thousand yards from the bridge and tower marker that are located on the golf course. The hangar at the northwest end of the airport was completed in 1973. Privately owned, the hangar also serves as a meeting area for marine and farm equipment dealer demonstrations and sales presentations along

with civic and political meetings. In 1975, construction began on a mini-mall style building, which is now called Courier Square and houses a salon and spa. The former Ida County Courier building was also built in the same block. The beautiful, “old castle” design graces the downtown skyline, of Ida Grove. A commercial development known as Oak Grove Plaza was formed on the west edge of town in 1982. A particular place of interest in this area is the Skate Palace, which is one of the most unique roller skating centers in the country. The Skate Palace, is now owned and operated by the American Legion and may be used for wedding receptions, dances, parties, conventions, etc. The Skate Palace sits at the edge of Cobb Memorial Park which, at different times during the year, becomes the “Avenue of Flags”. Flags representing veterans who have passed are displayed around the lake. We invite you to drive down our streets to find other buildings with the castle theme.

Ida Grove Public Library The Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) established a public library for Ida Grove in 1908 by sending out 500 invitations asking everyone to bring a book or two for the library. Joining forces with the ladies of the Civic Club, the two groups were able to open a public library and reading room in the old WCTU Hall. Originally operating two afternoons and evenings a week, expenses of the library were covered by public subscription. The library emigrated to to the upstairs east room of the city building, in 1910. By 1922, circulation became free to the public after the city voted a 1.25 mill tax for library support.

Come pray with us!

In the spring of 1978, the library moved to it’s present location on Second Street. Since then, a Children’s Library has been added, the groundbreaking ceremony for which was held July 1, 2008. The 1,800-square-foot addition features a computer area, an arts and crafts area, a performance stage, and a trolley to curl up in with a book. Along with offering traditional materials found in libraries, the Ida Grove Public Library offers wireless internet, proctored exam services, a public meeting room, genealogy collection, and borrowing from another library if you cannot find the materials you are looking for. Stop by, grab a book, and relax with us six days a week. We are open Monday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday 11 a.m.5 p.m.; Wednesday 12 p.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday 12 p.m.-7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

American Legion Ida Grove’s American Legion Post was chartered in 1919, with the first meetings conducted on the first floor of the Opera House, now Iverson’s TV. The post was originally Leo P. McNamara Post 61 in honor of one of Ida Grove’s first casualties in WWI. In March, 1922, the post purchased the armory, original home of Company B, from stock holders, and burned the mortgage seven years later in 1929. In 1946, after WWII, the Ida Grove post re-chartered and became McNamara-Moore Post 61. The addition of Moore was in honor of Lance Moore, Ida Grove’s first casualty of WWII. From its beginning, the post has been a very active organization. The post provides a service officer to assist any veteran in need through the maze of veteran’s benefits and is available to provide full military rites at services for deceased veterans upon request. Current activities of the post include the maintenance of Cobb Park on the west edge of Ida Grove which includes a shelter house, camp ground, bathhouse and Ida County Veteran’s Memorial. The post is also proud of the Avenue of Flags flown around Veteran’s Memorial Lake, currently home to 468 flags donated by family members to honor deceased veterans. All members of the post are shareholder owners of the Skate Palace, one of the most beautiful facilities in the country. Membership in the post

is restricted by the government to veterans who served active duty during war time. Ida Grove Airport The Ida Grove Airport is a public airport owned by the City of Ida Grove. Our City Administrator manages the facility. The asphalt runway is 3,172 feet long, and 50 feet wide. Tie-downs are available for airplanes. It has an administrative building with restrooms and a phone. Our municipal airport offers hangar space when available. Please contact City Hall for more information. Due to the changes and regulations concerning fuel storage, our airport no longer offers fuel for purchase. Childcare Kidzone Childcare Center, a licensed non-profit center providing care for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years, is located at 481 Pin Oak Dr. in Ida Grove. This new center opened on Monday, April 3rd. Kidzone is open Monday through Friday 5:30am to 6:00pm. Kidzone is led in its new building by long-time employee Jayne Harrington as center director and Sara Puffer as curriculum director. This center was made possible thru the hard work of enrolled families, staff and generous donors, as well as all the other community members to whom this center is so vital.

Ida County Conservation

Moorehead Pioneer Park is a beautiful 258 acre park located on the northwest corner of Ida Grove. It will give you a first-hand view at what life was like in the earlier settlement days. Once the original site of Ida Grove, Moorehead Park now features a 12 acre lake complete with fishing docks and a boat ramp and is the largest tract of timber in Ida County. The park is home to significant Ida County historical sites; such as the Stagecoach Inn, a historic train depot, pioneer cemetery, and a country schoolhouse. Trails, picnic areas, and a playground make this park the perfect place to spend the day. Located in Moorehead Park, the Ida County Conservation Center provides the public with an up-close and personal look into our natural world. The Conservation Center has everything from a live honey bee hive to a small library of nature books. The Conservation Center features a kid’s

corner, where there is always a handson activity readily available. The Lipton Bird Room is the perfect place to watch the bird feeders and take in the beautiful view. The Ida County Conservation Center also serves as the home base and classroom for all of the Ida County Conservation Boards environment education programs. This building is also available as a rental space for the public to enjoy for family get-togethers, graduation parties, rehearsal suppers, meetings, and much more. Crawford Creek Recreation Area (CCRA) is a modern 260 acre park located 3 miles south of Battle Creek, IA. Established in 1975, the park has become an oasis for those seeking a quick getaway or a weekend retreat. Ida County Fair July 19 through 23, 2017

The first Ida County Fair, a three-day event consisting of horse racing, with displays of corn, oats, wheat, flax, vegetables and homemade articles was held in 1866. Over the years, the fair moved from south of Ida in the Valley School, to east of the old Ida Village, to 1.5 miles west of Ida Grove on 20 acres, to its present location in 1952. The Ida County Fair finds its home on 35 acres located almost directly in the middle of the county along US Highway 59. The fair started small, but has gradually grown to its present length of five consecutive days, beginning on

a Wednesday. The fair is held in mid-to late-July and is a great place for families to gather in a very safe environment. The Ida County Fair has a great tradition of supplying its patrons with wholesome entertainment throughout the five days – from the queen contest, talent show and mud drags to the rodeo, tractor pull and music festival. We take pride in the fact that our entertainment comes from the talents of 4-H members, their families, and individuals in the county that like to get together for some friendly competition. It’s great hometown fun.

For complete details and schedules contact the Ida County Fair, 5426 210th St, Ida Grove IA 51445 or call 712-369-1445.
