Falcon football team built on size, experience O-A/BC-IG football coach Larry Allen is pointing to size and experience as the strength of his club this season. The Falcons return 15 letter winners from last year’s 3-6 team. Twelve of the letter winners are seniors. The Falcons finished the 2016 season by winning three of their last four games by an average of 31 points per game. Their only loss in the final month of the season was to AHSTW by a score of 17-12. AHSTW finished second in the district with a 6-1 record and were 8-2 overall. The veteran players include seniors Ryan Bumann (RB/LB, 6-1, 178), Chase Devitt (RB/LB, 5-10, 190), Ross Schwade (E/LB, 5-11, 161), Isaac Endrulat (E/LB, 6-2, 187), Ryan Hill (OL/DL, 6-0, 302), Michael Streed (OL/DL, 5-9, 176), Ryder Meek (OL/ DL, 6-3, 248), Derek Sharkey (OL/ LB, 6-2, 230), Blake Anderson (OL/ DL, 6-3 197), Tyler Anderson (OL/DL, 6-3, 221) and Ryan Kolpin (E/DB, 6-4, 155) and juniors Kaden Ladwig (QB/ DB, 6-0, 163), Ethan Mortensen (E/ LB, 5-8, 148), Devin Behrendsen (OL/ LB, 6-2, 186) and Quintin Cranston (RB/LB). Devitt, who led the team in rushing with 1,042 yards on 222 carries, and Endrulat, the leading tackler with 63.5 tackles, both earned second team all-district honors in 2016. Bumann and Tyler Anderson were honorable mention. “The strength of our team is our experience and our size; we have some big linemen,” noted coach Allen. “We don’t return all of our players from last year, but we do return a lot of kids who saw valuable playing time. “Having those returning linemen will take some pressure off of quarterback Kaden Ladwig and running back Chase Devitt. Last year we weren’t able to run the ball as well as I would have liked, which forced us to pass the ball more often. Hopefully, we can run the ball more effectively this year and won’t have to throw the ball as much.” In 2016, Ladwig was thrown into the role of starting quarterback in the first quarter of the first game of the season after senior Cole Veltri’s season ended due to an injury. Ladwig threw for 1,042 yards on 97 of 182 passes. He threw 16 interceptions and 10 touchdowns.

“The silver lining to Veltri’s injury is, now Ladwig has a year of experience under his belt and the learning curve won’t be as big for him,” noted Allen. “Hopefully, we can run the ball more effectively and that will take the pressure off of having to throw the ball. We’ll still throw the ball, but we would like to throw it when we want to and not because we have to. Anytime you get into a third and long situation the defense is going to come after you. We need to limit the tough situations we put ourselves in.” In order to improve on last year’s record, Allen said his club has to play more consistent on both sides of the ball. “We did some really good things at times last year, but we weren’t consistent doing those things for an entire game; especially in the first half of the season,” noted Allen. “We need to

start the season better this year. Even though we have a lot of returning kids; we do have some holes to fill. How quickly those kids adapt will go a long way in determining the amount of success we have early in the season.” Allen added another key to success will be how “sound” the team plays defensively. “We want to force our opponents away from their strengths and force them into long third down situations. If we can limit the damage they do on first down that will be huge.” While the letter winners are the core of the team, Allen said some sophomores might see varsity playing time. “We have several sophomores that will see the field in different situations,” said Allen. “We’re trying to use more personnel groups on the field this year instead of just 11 kids all the time. We’re excited about our experienced kids, but we do have some younger kids that will play here and

there.” This season marks the second of a two-year district alignment. LoganMagnolia won the district in 2016 with a 7-0 mark. AHSTW was second with a 6-1 record. The Falcons placed fifth with a 3-4 record. “The top two teams are Logan-Magnolia and AHSTW,” said Allen. “Missouri Valley will also be good and I-KM-Manning will be in the mix. It will be a four to five team race. It will also be a case of anybody can knock off anybody else on any given Friday. We hope to be a factor, but we will need to get off to a better start in district play than we did last season.” Allen noted he is optimistic the team can get off to a good start based on how well the team has performed in preseason preparations. “We throw out the word potential with these kids,” said Allen. “On paper (continued on page 4)

The teams that do the best job of replacing those kids will have the most success. A big key is how the returning players can get themselves motivated. A big key for us is to get our returning kids to take on a leadership role. “I’m excited about this group of kids. They are a positive group and a very close-knit group of kids. They just need to be more vocal. We don’t always communicate well at the line of scrimmage. It can’t be a secret who

O-A/BC-IG cross-country teams feature veteran runners The 2017 version of the O-A/BC-IG boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams have a leg up on where they were last year at this time in that both teams have more experienced runners returning. “We started 2016 with little running experience,” noted coach Bob Saunders. “This year there is a lot coming back from last year so the kids are far beyond where they were last year at this time. “Conditioning wise you always want to be farther along than where you are, but so far we are looking pretty good. At this point we don’t have any major injuries or over use injuries. “We have a great bunch of kids. They are working hard and having fun; you can’t ask anymore than that from high school athletes.” Saunders said at this point of the season the teams haven’t set many goals. “Right now we are looking at what we can do in the irst couple of meets,” said Saunders. “We’re looking at how we will attack the course, how to run hills, how to run downhill and how to run each runners tempo through the center part of the run. “All of our early season meets are practice. You can’t have a better practice than an actual meet. We are trying to peak at the end of the season and not in the irst three weeks of the season.” Girls The girls’ team returns seven letter winners from 2016, including four runners who are two-year letter winners. The veteran runners are senior Madison Lansink and juniors Madison Schiernbeck, Brooklyn Hoffman and Alyssa Mason. Schiernbeck is a two time state quali ier, placing sixth as a freshman and 31st as a sophomore. Mason placed 84th at last year’s state meet. Both runners were also all-conference performers in 2016. The other letter winners are juniors Kelsey Dausel, Sarah Cotton and Kirsten Dausel. Junior Kim Renze lettered as team manager. The rest of the roster includes junior Sydney Durbin, sophomores Stephanie Rigby and Cora Hansen and freshmen Anna Winterrowd and Ashly Gunderson (manager). Kurt Brown serves as assistant coach for both the girls and boys teams. “It is so hard to tell early in the season who the top runners will be, but I really like the depth of our girls’ team,” noted Saunders. “We have a lot of experience. Hopefully, it means something for them.

“Schiernbeck looks better than she did last year. Hopefully, she’ll be back in the same form she had as a freshman. At this point she has been running really well. She has very good split times in her training sessions. “Mason is also running very strong. Winterrowd has run some practices (she also plays volleyball) with us and has looked good.” Saunders added many of the crosscountry girls were part of the spring track conference championship team. “It means something to know that you can win. It gives the girls self con idence.” Saunders listed Kingsley-Pierson/ Woodbury Central and Maple ValleyAnthon-Oto as two of the top teams in the conference this season. “If our girls can be in the top three it will mean we were pretty successful,” said Saunders. “The conference meet will be tough. We will have to really improve and be healthy when the end of

the year rolls around.” Boys The boys’ team returns four letter winners from last year’s Western Valley Conference championship team. Last year’s league title was the ifth straight conference crown for the Falcons and the eighth in the last nine years. “Our boys run well at the conference meet,” said Saunders. “Maybe it is due to that tradition. They don’t want to break the chain. You never know what will happen at the conference meet. It will help this season to be at home (Ida Grove golf course) for the conference meet.” Saunders added Kingsley-Pierson/ Woodbury Central will have a “very good” team this season. He said there will also be some other teams that will step up to challenge for the league title. The Falcons’ hopes of chalking up another WVC championship will come from the returning letter winners. The veteran runners are senior Ty Warnke,

juniors Dylan Hemer and Kade Hare and sophomore Darian Hannel. Hemer and Hare are two-year letter winners. Hemer, Hare and Warnke all earned all-conference honors in 2016 by placing among the top 15 runners at the WVC meet. “Our letter winners are leading the pack, but we’re still looking for a couple more kids to step up and ill out the varsity team,” noted Saunders. “Ethan Young and Evan Veltri and a number of others are running with the letter winners. We also have a number of young kids who are out for the irst time who are looking good.” The non-letter winners on the team include junior Ethan Young, sophomores Jace Krayenhagen, Leighton Barnum, Evan Veltri, Garrett Leed, Eli Gebel and Phillip Brooks and freshmen Eric Sibenaller, Caleb Reitz and Truman Clark. Saunders pointed out that his boys (continued on page 6)

Falcon volleyball coach looking for improvement O-A/BC-IG’s volleyball team is looking to improve from its 6-21 record in 2016. Coach Holly Nuetzman believes that is an achievable goal. “I think this team has a lot of potential to make some noise and surprise people,” noted Nuetzman. “To have success, the new comers will need to be able to play in unison with those who have experience. The girls will also need to develop more con idence in their abilities and I would like to see us be more aggressive in conference play.” The coach noted the strength of this year’s club is the number of returning players who have varsity experience. Nuetzman added the team has great leadership and depth in several positions. The team returns eight players who lettered in 2016. Seven of those players have starting line-up experience. The letter winners are (* indicates returning starter) seniors Abbi Ullrich*, Bailey Ullrich*, Calli Wareham*, Jordyn Fredericks* and Beth Rehse* and sophomores Halle Hemer, Kylee Weber* and Sarah Petersen*. Rehse and Petersen were honorable mention all-conference in 2016. Petersen, who was named the team’s MVP last season, led the 2016 team in serve ef iciency (.981) and assists (219) and second in ace serves (29). Jake Mitchell is pound for pound one of the strongest players on our team. Jake Kliegl is going to be a force at fullback and linebacker. “I also think we have some good depth at the varsity level. We have several good linemen and we have skill players who are very versatile and could fill in at a couple of positions.” In addition to learning a new offense and defense, Tokheim said staying

healthy will play a big part in how successful his club is this season. “Staying healthy is always important in class A football,” noted Tokheim. “The other thing is how quickly the guys learn the new offense and defense. “Our offensive line will be the key to our success. If they can learn the blocking schemes and nuances of the offense, communicate and work together I think their size and strength will dominate the line of scrimmage.” Ridge View posted a 4-3 district mark in 2016, which placed the team third in the inal standings. Tokheim is looking

for a competitive district race in 2017. “I think we will be able to compete for the top two spots in the district,” said Tokheim. “Algona Garrigan will reload. H-M-S was 4-3 in the district in 2016 and it is the second year of the new head coach; I think they will improve. “South O’Brien will ight for the top couple of spots with a nice nucleus back. M-M-C-RU has a big group of returning starters and they will make big strides as a team as most of the bugs in sharing have been worked out.” Ridge View football Aug. 25 Alta-Aurelia

Raptor cross-country coach optimistic about new season Ridge View cross-country coach Katie Tesch is optimistic about the new season. Tesch’s outlook is based on the return of several veteran girls and an increase in the number of boys who are running this season. “Our runners are really hard workers and great competitors,” said Tesch. “We would like to see our girls place in the top three teams in the Western Valley Conference (WVC) and make their way to the state meet. “We are looking forward to our boys being more competitive as a team, something we’ve struggled with because of our low numbers in the past. We also would like to continue our streak of WVC place winners and possibly placing in the top three as a team. “As we train, we’ll really have to focus on keeping everyone healthy and avoid shin splints. Each day is an opportunity to get better.” Tesch’s assistant coach is Emily Stracke. Girls Girls who earned letters last season include seniors Sierra Deck and Macy Wunschel, juniors Jill Galvin, Abbi Hanson and Rachel Kenny and sophomore Katlyn Wiese. Wiese and Kenny both earned all-conference honors last season by placing among the top 15 runners at the conference meet. Wiese placed fourth and Kenny inished 11th. In addition, Wiese quali ied for the 2016 class 1A state meet where she placed 37th. Other runners who will be counted on this season are sophomore Hanna Blackmore and freshmen Maria Mendoza and Paige Padavich. “This year we are excited to have lots of experience on our girls team,” noted Tesch. “These girls have been running together for a few seasons and inished ifth at the state qualifying meet and second in the WVC meet last year. Along with our veterans, we have some new runners joining us who will help us reach our goal of getting to the state meet. Blackmore, Mendoza and Padavich are great runners and will de initely give our team some more depth.” Boys Ridge View returns four boys who lettered in 2016. The runners are seniors Andres Carbajal and Andrew Snyder and sophomores Jaden Droegmiller and Connor Pickhinke. Carbajal missed earning all-conference by three places in 2016. He ran 18th at the conference meet. The top 15 earn allconference. None of Ridge View’s runners quali ied for the 2016 state meet.

The squad also includes seniors Kevin Herrera and Jon Madsen, sophomores Alex Movall and Grant Schmidt and freshmen Jesse Coleman, Jack Henderson and Ben Todd. “We are excited to add more boys to our roster this year,” said Tesch. “Carbajal and Snyder will lead our team. They’ve been with our program for four years and are great leaders for our squad. “We have seven newcomers this year, including Coleman, Henderson and Todd who were all middle school Western Valley Conference place winners last year. We hope that they continue to be competitive at the longer distance and help our high

school boys have more success this season.” As far as the 2017 conference race is concerned, Tesch listed O-A/BC-IG and WC-K-P as the top boys’ teams while WC-K-P, O-A/ BC-IG and MV-A-O are her choices for the girls’ teams to beat. The Raptors opened the season Thursday, Aug. 24 at Southeast Valley (Gowrie). The annual Tim Thomas Classic is slated for Saturday, Sept. 9 on the Holstein golf course. Raptor volleyball team has lofty goals for 2017 Ridge View volleyball coach Monica Bloyer says her club has high expectations for the upcoming season. “We have an expectation of ourselves of winning the Western Valley Conference title and to be conference tournament champs. Our goal is to win as many games as possible to get a good draw in regional match ups and to qualify for state,” said Bloyer. The coach added her team has the ability to live up to those goals. “The strength of our team is we have loads of coordinated, athletic kids with great speed and agility,” said Bloyer. “We have tough servers, aggressive hitters and quick defenders. “The girls have a high work ethic all around in the classroom, during practice and in the weight room and they have a competitive drive to win.” Ridge View posted a 19-13 match record in 2016. Bloyer said in order to improve on last season’s record her club will need to make good offensive decisions in playing the ball, be consistent in passing, serve receive and hitting and to have con idence in themselves. “We need to play together as a team and support each other, have a positive Photo by: Kyle Wiebers attitude and give a daily effort,” said Bloy- Ridge View volleyball letter winners: Ridge View’s volleyball team will look to its four returning letter winners for leadership er. “These factors have been outstanding during the 2017 season.
