THE EFFECTS OF CHILDHOOD BULLYING Recent research involving eight-yearold children who were frequently bullied shows that they were more likely to develop a psychiatric disorder requiring treatment as adults (compared to children who were not bullied). This finding reinforces the conclusions of previous studies that found a link between bullying and a higher risk of mental health problems during childhood, such as low self-esteem, poor school performance, depression, and an increased risk for suicide. Researchers have found that the bullied children were significantly more likely to internalize their problems by age ten. Internalizing problems is characterized by inwardly directed negativity, such as depression. Bullied children benefit from treatment that helps them avert the depression, anxiety, and sense of social isolation that result from being bullied. If your child is being bullied, help is available.
