Kurt Brown is the head coach and Morgan Boger is the assistant coach.

O-A/BC-IG girls’ basketball team builds around le er winners The start of the 2017-18 basketball season brings promise and uncertainty for the O-A/BC-IG girls’ team. The Falcons return four letter winners from last year’s 6-15 team. The group includes the top two scorers and rebounders from last season in seniors Anna VanDusen (14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game) and Beth Rehse (12.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game). VanDusen was a irst team all-conference player last season while Rehse was a second team selection. VanDusen enters the 2017-18 with an injury and it is uncertain how much she will play. O-A/BC-IG’s other letter winners are senior Jordyn Fredericks (team leader in steals with 28 and second in assists with 55) and sophomore Kylee Weber. The rest of the roster includes: Juniors—Emma Endrulat, Ashley Lindner and Alyssa Mason. Sophomores—Ryder Cranston, Halle Hemer, Lexi Neville, Sarah Petersen and Liz Zobel. Freshmen—Morgan Godbersen, Addie Hickey, Lillian Hoffman, Mahala Kruse, Joie

Matthies, Carly Murphy, Bella Raasch, Elle Schroeder, Jayden Thomson and Anna Winterrowd. Morgan (VanDerSloot) Boger, who played on O-A/BC-IG’s state championship team in 2011, is the team’s assistant coach. Head coach Kurt Brown, who served as the team’s assistant coach for the past several seasons and was the head coach for BC-IG from 1997 to 2003, said entering the new season there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. “The letter winners have the experience (to play varsity ball), but other than those girls I’m not sure who will make the varsity squad,” said Brown. “Early in the season all of the girls will be evaluated to ind out how they can help the team. Ideally, we would like to go deep in our rotation, but we will have to see how that shakes out.” Brown said depth will be a team strength this season. “We have some talent and some good athletes,” noted Brown. “We would like to get a nice rotation going, but we have a lot to igure out. We’ll have to wait and see how things fall into place. The girls had a nice

volleyball season. Hopefully, that con idence will carryover to the basketball court.” The coach added there are some things the girls will have to do this season if they hope to improve on last year’s record. “We need to play with more urgency,” noted Brown. “We’ll need to take care of the ball and play good defense. If we play good defense we will win some games. If we don’t play good defense we will struggle.” Brown said one factor in the team’s favor this season is the fact the girls won’t have to learn a new system. “We’re not doing a lot of things differently from last year. That continuity will help us. Other than the freshmen, the girls won’t have to learn a lot of new things. “Our goal is to get better every day in both practice and in games. If we do that we will be okay.” Brown pointed to four teams who are among the top teams in the Western Valley Conference entering the new year. Those teams are Kingsley-Pierson, Westwood, Woodbury Central and Ridge View. The girls opened the basketball season Nov. 20 when they played Alta-Aurelia. The

season opener marked the beginning of a busy early season for the Falcons. They will play 10 of their 20 regular season games before the Christmas break. Second row from left, Ethan Ernst, Reed Godbersen, Kaden Ladwig, Quintin Cranston, Grant Conover and William Grote. Third row from left, Austin Lindner, Izaiah Ironshell, Sam Devitt, Tevin Harms, Austin Wardrip and Tyler Ehrig. Fourth row from left, Preston Gill, Alex Clark, Isaac Newquist, George Ehrig Jr., Carson Godbersen and Eric Sibenaller. Fifth row from left, assistant coach Dan Dotzler, Brayden Sorensen, Cade Ernst, Trust Wells, Ahren VanDusen, Cam Sharkey, Cooper DeJean and head coach Steve Brown. Owen Luft, Peyton Young, Caleb Montgomery, Aden Campbell and Timothy Carlyle are also members of the team.

Compe on for playing me is driving Falcon boys’ improvement O-A/BC-IG took to the basketball court with a young and inexperienced boys’ basketball team last season. Head coach Steve Brown is hoping the experience the boys gained during a 5-16 season in 2016-17 will translate into more wins this season. “We are ahead of last year as far as putting in our offense and defense because so many kids got playing time last year,” said Brown. “We played a lot of this year’s juniors at the varsity level (last season) so they know what is going on. We also played a full junior varsity reserve schedule last year so our sophomores this year are able to jump right in and know what is going on.” Brown said depth will be a team strength this year. “None of our kids are outstanding players, but there are a lot of kids who are interchangeable so we should have some decent depth this year. “Having so many kids that are equal is good in practice because they push each

other to get better and that is what we are after. We’ve talked to the kids about making themselves better with each practice and to make their teammates better. The more competition you have in practice the better you are going to be. The kids have worked hard and bought into that philosophy.” Earning letters during last year’s 5-16 season were seniors Ty Warnke (guard), Ryan Bumann (forward), Chase Devitt (forward) and Ryan Kolpin (center) and juniors Landon Ray (guard), Kaden Ladwig (guard) and Quintin Cranston (forward). Warnke and Bumann were honorable mention all-conference in 2016-17. Other players Brown is looking at for the varsity rotation are senior Austin Newquist (center) and juniors Grant Conover (forward), Ethan Ernst (guard), Reed Godbersen (guard) and Austin Lindner (forward). The coach added some other players might make a push for the varsity team. “We’ve got some other young kids that

played junior varsity ball last season and we might have some freshmen that could possibly slide up to the varsity group. The freshmen class looks promising. There are kids that will help us in the future.” The rest of the roster includes: Junior—Peyton Young. Sophomores—William Grote, Izaiah Ironshell, Sam Devitt, Tevin Harms, Austin Wardrip, Tyler Ehrig and Carson Godbersen. Freshmen—Alex Clark, Isaac Newquist, George Ehrig Jr., Eric Sibenaller, Brayden Sorensen, Cade Ernst, Trust Wells, Ahren VanDusen, Cam Sharkey, Cooper DeJean, Owen Luft, Caleb Montgomery, Aden Campbell and Timothy Carlyle. Dan Dotzler is the assistant coach. Brown noted there are 36 boys out for basketball this season. “It’s great they want to be involved in our program, but it also creates some challenges as far as evaluating players and inding playing time for that many kids. But overall, it is

a good problem to have.” Brown said improving the overall offensive execution of the team will be a key factor in moving up in the win column this season. He said there aren’t any speci ic goals in terms of number of wins because his philosophy on setting goals has changed. “We’ve changed from outcome goals to process goals,” noted Brown. “The idea in doing that is if we do the little things in practice right—success will follow. If you set outcome goals you have to wait the whole season before you see the outcome. By setting process goals we dwell on things like how many times can I set a screen to help a teammate score.” Brown pointed Kingsley-Pierson and MV-A-O as two of the better teams in the conference. “K-P has most of its kids back from last year and MV-A-O under coach Brian Brown is always fundamentally sound. They also have two or three kids back (continued on page 5)

. . . Falcon boys’ improvement (continued from page 4) from last year and a good junior class. Obviously, we would like to be at the top of the conference and I would like to think we will be in the mix, but it is a question of how fast we grow up,” said Brown. The boys opened the regular season Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Boyer Valley. They play at Kingsley-Pierson Dec. 1 and open the home season Dec. 5 against MV-A-O. The Falcons will be busy in December, playing 10 of their 21 scheduled games before the Christmas break.

Nine le er winners are the founda on of the O-A/BC-IG wrestling team This year’s O-A/BC-IG wrestling team will have the services of nine letter winners including three state tournament quali iers returning from last year’s team. The letter winners and their projected weight classes this season are seniors Kurtis Krager (120), Blake Anderson (195), Tyler Anderson (220) and Ryder Meek (285), juniors Dylan Hemer (126), Ethan Mortensen (138) and sophomores Devin Behrendsen (182) and Jake Nieman (113). Nieman also listed freshmen Caleb Reitz (106) and Gavin Parks (160) as wrestlers who will contribute to the varsity team. Shawn Wilkerson and Damian Hammer are also out for wrestling. The returning state meet quali iers include Krager who is a three time state quali ier. are Tyler Anderson who placed sixth at 195 last season and Nieman who did not place at state last season as a freshman at 106. The wrestlers are coached by Randy Nieman (head coach) and Jory Hemer (assistant coach). “This is the inal ride for the four seniors,” noted Nieman. “They have put a lot of work into this program and all other sports they have participated in. I would love to say that all of us are working towards a strong conference inish and achieving everyone’s personal goals, but in wrestling, as in life, wishing and doing are two different things. We have a lot of hard work to put in on a daily basis.” Nieman listed goals for this season. “We always want to develop each wrestler to their potential and teach them the life skills of hard work, goal setting and determination. We feel we can develop these skills as well as any program in the school.”

O-A/BC-IG had a 12-5 dual record last season including a 6-1 mark in the Western Valley Conference. Year after year the Western Valley Conference features some top wrestling talent. Nieman said the top teams in conference this season include Westwood and Woodbury Central. The Falcons opened the season Tuesday, Nov. 28 with a double dual against East Sac County and South Central Calhoun. O-A/BC-IG will host Ridge View and MV-A-O this Thursday, Nov. 30 in conference action. Westwood will host the conference tournament Jan. 13. The annual Herb Irgens tournament is slated for Jan. 1920. O-A/BC-IG girls’ bowling letter winners: The O-A/BC-IG girls’ bowling team letterwinners are, from left, Kim Renze, Tori Hoefling, Jenna Henderson and Aurora Anderson.

The O-A/BC-IG bowling teams open their seasons this Thursday, Nov. 30 in Denison against Denison-Schleswig. The Falcons irst home meet will be Dec. 15 against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/ Remsen-Union at Ida Bowl in Ida Grove. Girls The O-A/BC-IG girls’ team placed second at the state qualifying meet last season. Four letter winners are back from that team including an all-district competitor. The returning letter winners are senior Jenna Henderson, juniors Kim Renze and Victoria Hoe ling and sophomore Aurora Anderson. Henderson earned all-district honorable mention status last season. New head coach Wylene Wessel noted, “With just a couple of weeks of practice under our belt it is too early to tell who will get the last two spots on varsity, but I’m expecting the four letter winners to return and do great things on the lanes this season.” Last year’s team had a 7-3 record and was second at the state qualifying meet. Wessel said she would like the girls to improve in both areas. “I’d love to see them improve and have a better record this year. My goal is to shoot for second place again, however, I don’t think irst place is too far out of reach this season. I want my team to go in and bowl their best and improve from one meet to the next.” Wessel said Le Mars is one the top teams in this area, but the Bulldogs may have moved up a class (to 2A), which would take Le Mars out of the Falcons state qualifying district. Le Mars placed ahead of the Falcons in last season’s state qualifying meet. The rest of the roster includes: Senior—Amy Huls. Juniors—Rebecca Cedeno, Alyssa Henderson, Brooke Little, Billie Mosier and Sierra Schmidt. Sophomores—Mary Bennett, Krystal Bettin, Madison Grasty, Skylar Mackey, Stephanie Rigby, Zoe Verschoor and Savannah Wych. Freshmen—Kylee Dausel, Marley Hewitt and Amber Hoe ling. Boys The Falcon boys return seven letter winners from last year’s team that recorded a 5-5 record. All of the letter winners were

starters at some point last season. The veteran bowlers include seniors Cole Rhea and Austin Behrendsen, juniors Dana Wessel, Colin Bengford, Kolton Krajicek and Jarrett Bumann and sophomore Darian Hannel. Wessel (180.6 average) was a second team an all-district bowler last season. Bengford (166.7 average) was honorable mention. Coach Kurt Hofmeister listed Rhea, Wessel, Bengford, Krajicek and Hannel as the team’s top returning bowlers. The coach listed Behrendsen, Bumann and sophomore Hunter Maass as bowlers who should contribute to the varsity effort. The rest of the roster includes: Senior—Ryan Dunker. Juniors—Tyler Euchner, Gage Thoreson and Zane Sohm. Sophomore—Dylan Ehrig, Brandon Wingert, Bailey Newman, Troy Hillmer and Austin Peterson. Freshmen—Garrett Leed, Ethan Reitz, Zander Lichtenberg, Austin Wych, Chris Mace, Gavan Flammang, Zach Dunker and Paul Mazler. “We would like to have a better than .500 record this season,” noted coach Kurt Hofmeister. “We would also like to be competitive enough to have a chance to qualify for the state meet.” Hofmeister added Le Mars is the top team in the district. “Le Mars will be hands down the best team in our district. Hopefully, we can be right up there with Harlan and M-M-C/RU.” Schedule Nov. 30. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .at Denison 7 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . at Le Mars 15. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Second row from left, Veronica Kron, Kate Kofmehl, Katlyn Wiese, Kenzee Wunschel and Hanna Blackmore. Third row from left, Bailey Graff, Anya Kistenmacher, Mikayla Kolpin, Autumn Henkel, Cora Devitt and Paige Padavich. Fourth row from left, assistant coach Matt Best, Ashley Kestel (manager), Brooklyn Albers (manager), Katie Brinkman (manager) and head coach Brian Bode. Alexis Clark and Emilie Sawatzky are members of the team.

Raptor girls look to build on 2016-17 season The Ridge View girls’ basketball team went 13-6 overall last season, including a 7-2 conference record. Coach Brian Bode believes his team will be just as competitive this season as it was last year. “We won some close games last year and hopefully having another year of experience we can maintain that ability to win those games,” said Bode. “Many of our games will be decided on the defensive end. We need to contest shots and not allow teams to get offensive rebounds. Offensively, we will need to take care of the ball, be aggressive and get quality shots. If we do that, I think we will compete each night out.” The Raptors return seven letter winners from last season. The top returning players are seniors Beth Pickhinke (wing), Erin Johnson (wing) and Paige Todd (forward) and juniors Kinzey Dutler (guard), Emerson Else (guard/wing), Kennedy Mason (guard/forward) and Kara Richard (wing/forward). Pickhinke was a irst team all-conference player last season when she averaged 12.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per

game. Dutler (6.4 points and 4.8 assists per game) and Emerson Else (5.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game) were both honorable mention all-conference. Sophomores Kenzee Wunschel (post) and Hanna Blackmore (guard) are two players Bode is looking to for help on the varsity level. The rest of the roster includes: Sophomores—Veronica Kron, Kate Kofmehl and Katlyn Wiese. Freshmen—Bailey Graff, Anya Kistenmacher, Mikayla Kolpin, Autumn Henkel, Cora Devitt, Paige Padavich, Alexis Clark and Emile Sawatzky. The assistant coach is Matt Best. Team managers are Ashley Kestel, Brooklyn Albers and Katie Brinkman. The return of seven letter winners; versatile players who are able to play multiple positions; the players comfort level within the system and team chemistry are areas Bode listed as strengths of this year’s team. The coach added while his club has several strong suites there are areas that need some work.

“We will certainly need to work on rebounding and boxing out as size is not something we will have compared to our opponents,” said Bode. “We want to be able to play faster, so getting out in transition is an area we’d like to improve. We also need to develop depth after our irst seven players.” Bode said heading into the 2017-18 season the team’s number one goal is to improve on last year’s success and have more wins. “Each year brings new challenges and each team has their own unique identity. We want to focus our success on how we inish. Finishing at the rim, inishing in the fourth quarter and ultimately inishing our season with a win. “Attitude and effort are two things our players can control. We will mix our defense depending on the low of the games. We like to be seen as a scrappy team with an aggressive mindset. We might not be the biggest, fastest, or strongest, but we will play like we are.” Bode said the WVC will be very competitive this season. He listed Kingsley-

Ridge View boys’ basketball team: The Ridge View boys’ basketball team includes, front from left, Michael Zobel, Logan Cuthrell, Klint Blum, Jaxon Franken, Jake Kliegl (manager), Jake Tokheim, Ezra Miller, Austin Degen and Kolton Blum. Second row from left, assistant coach Alex Warnke, Jaden Droegmiller, Kevin McGuire, Andrew Brockman, Matthew Brosamle, Brant Price, Karlo Weldon, Nathan Yockey and head coach Mike Smith. Third row from left, Caleb Kistenmacher, Brecken Conover, Jared Vohs, Kole Winkel, Nick Gisch, Alex Movall, Dawson Blum and Grant Schmidt. Fourth row from left, Beau Blackmore, Anthony Garcia, Wade Vincent, Carlos Galvan, Bo Clausen and Logan Blum. Logan Gross is also a member of the team.

Raptor boys build around returning le er winners The Ridge View boys’ basketball team has several pieces in place to build on last season’s 9-13 record including seven letter winners. Three of the letter winners saw starting time during the 2016-17 campaign. The letter winners include senior Jaxon Franken, Klint Blum and Kolton Blum and juniors Jacob Tokheim, Ezra Miller, Austin Degen and Logan Cuthrell. Franken, Tokheim and Miller were all starters. Junior Jake Kliegl who earned a letter last season and saw time in the starting rotation is out for the season. Franken, who led the team in scoring (11.3 points per game) last season and Tokheim (the team leader in assists with 86 and steals with 68) both earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season. New head coach Mike Smith, who has been the assistant coach for several years, is also counting on juniors Kevin McGuire, Andrew Brockman and Karlo Weldon to help on the varsity level. “We have our leading scorer back this year for his senior year and a lot of

experience behind him,” noted Smith. “We only graduated two starters last year and everyone else got some game time experience last year. We have a lot of size in the backcourt so we hope to be a good rebounding team. “A big thing that we are going to stress this year is defense and rebounding. We need to improve in both areas if we are going to win games this year. Our main focus this year is defense. I will be preaching all season about getting stops and boxing out.” The head coach added his club also needs to improve on its shooting and free throws. As a team last year Ridge View shot 53 percent from the free throw line. Cutting down on turnovers and valuing the basketball are also top priorities this season. Smith said his could be a good season for the Raptors, but there is work to do. “We have more juniors and seniors this

year, but everyone had a lot of playing time last season. We want to be a very good defensive team and be successful on the offensive side. We can accomplish a lot of things this year, but it’s going to be a learning experience for all of us.” In terms of the conference race, Smith said the Raptors most challenging games will be with MV-A-O/Charter OakUte, Woodbury Central and Kingsley-Pierson. Smith’s assistant coach is Alex Warnke. The rest of the roster includes: Senior—Michael Zobel. Juniors—Mattthew Brosamle, Brant Price and Nick Gisch. Sophomores—Jaden Droegmiller, Nathan Yockey, Jared Vohs, Alex Movall, Dawson Blum, Grant Schmidt and Logan Gross. Freshmen—Caleb Kistenmacher, Brecken Conover, Kole Winkel, Beau
