O-A/BC-IG features well-rounded boys’ track team With 36 athletes out for track and ield this spring, O-A/BC-IG boys’ head coach Travis Chizek is optimistic his club can score plenty of points. “Overall, we have a solid team in all areas,” said Chizek. “We return state quali iers in Isaac Endrulat, Philip Brooks, Quintin Cranston, William Grote and Ryder Meek. Endrulat will lead us in the mid distance group, running 400s and 800s. Brooks is now an experienced sprinter and our hurdle group will be strong, bringing Cranston and William back as well as other upper classmen such as Ryan Kolpin and Chase Devitt. “In the throws, I expect to score a lot of points with Meek, as well as Tyler Anderson, who has had a great senior year in everything he has done. Meek is a two time state quali ier and is our school record holder in the shot put. I expect him to break his own record multiple times this year on his way to medaling at the state meet in May.” Meek placed 10th in the class 2A shot put in 2016 with a throw of 48-10½ and 13th in 2017 with a throw of 49-4. Chizek said the Falcons will be relatively balanced in the running events with quality kids at every distance. “Our top returning sprinters are Brooks, Gebel, Godbersen, Lindner, Mortensen and Devitt,” said Chizek. “Each of these individuals was on many different relays last year and we look for them to lead us throughout this season. Each of them brings something different to the team and I think we will have a lot of success throughout the season with this group. “Krajicek, who joined us this year, has had a great few weeks as we get ready for the competition part of the season and the addition of a couple freshmen in DeJean and Truman Clark make the sprints a strong group for us. “Our top middle distance runners are Endrulat and Conover. Endrulat had a great junior year where he improved greatly in the 400 and 800 meters. I think he is poised to have a great senior year and take another step forward. Conover has continued to improve each year and we look forward to see what he can do this year as one of the leaders within the middle distance group.” Chizek also believes the ield events will be productive for the Falcons this season. Meek and Anderson will be the leaders in the shot and discus. Chizek pointed to Godbersen, Gebel and DeJean as the team’s top long jumpers. Kolpin,

Lindner and Grote will be counted on for points in the high jump. “Our ield events have been something we have prided ourselves on at O-A/BC-IG,” said Chizek. “In my opinion, our jump coaches have done a great job training our athletes and taught them the proper technique to really allow them to reach their potential. “I have been fortunate to have some outstanding talent in the group of throwers I have coached and this year is no different. Meek and Anderson are not only physically gifted; they also have a great work ethic.” The coach noted the team has not addressed any team goals at this point of the season. “We have a pretty complete team this

year and I think as the season progresses and the young guys learn what we do, we will see this team being competitive late in the season,” said Chizek. “We talk to our kids about how this is a journey and that everything we do leads us to the month of May. May is the championship part of the season and if we prepare properly, we will be happy with how things shake out at the end of the season.” The coach added he is excited about this track team and this season. “I think we have great kids and we will have some kids surprise us along the way. We have been working hard for more than a month and I’m anxious to start competing and seeing the kids perform well.” Chizek listed Kingsley-Pierson/

Woodbury Central as the top team in the conference. Chizek’s assistant coaches are Tony Napierala and Holly Neutzman. O-A/BC-IG girls’ track team is well balanced O-A/BC-IG girls’ track coach Bob Saunders says his team should be able to score points in a variety of events this season. “We should be pretty well balanced,” said Saunders. “We may not be outstanding and have a lot of state quali iers, but we will perform well because we have quite a bit of depth. I don’t know if that will lead to a conference championship, but if we keep improving and our young kids believe in themselves and we get good leadership from our upper classmen, we should be a pretty good team.” The Falcons will be fairly young team this season. Of the 33 girls out for track and ield, 21 are either freshmen or sophomores. Sixteen of the girls on the roster are returning letter winners. The letter winners and their events are: Seniors—Jordyn Fredericks (sprints), Bethany Rehse (throws, distance) and Calli Wareham (sprints/hurdles, long jump). Juniors—Sarah Cotton (sprints), Kirsten Dausel (hurdles, sprints, high jump), Sydney Durbin (sprints, high jump), Brooklyn Hoffman (distance), Alyssa Mason (distance), Madison Schiernbeck (distance) and Ashley Lindner (hurdles, sprints, long jump). Sophomores—Ryder Cranston (distance), Cora Hansen (distance), Greysenne Hoe ling (throws), Lexi Neville (sprints, long jump), Macy Nicholson (throws) and Sarah Petersen (hurdles, sprints). Durbin placed second in the high jump at the state meet as a sophomore and placed irst as a freshman. Other placings at the 2017 state meet were Wareham, 400 hurdles, 11th; Fredericks, 100, 11th and 4x200 (Fredericks, Cotton, Wareham, Durbin) 11th. O-A/BC-IG’s 4x100 (returning runners are Cotton, Fredericks, Durbin) and shuttle hurdle (returning runners are Petersen, Lindner) teams also quali ied for state, but did not place. This season, Saunders listed sprints, middle distance, hurdle, high jump, long jump and throwing events as the areas

where the Falcons should be the strongest. “We have some areas that are stronger than others, but you never know what will happen by the end of the year. You just hope you don’t have too many injuries and that you do well,” said Saunders. Saunders said Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central is the favorite to win the conference championship this season. “Last year, we beat K-P/WC for the conference championship and it could happen again, but it will be very challenging,” said Saunders. “K-P/WC has a lot of depth, especially in their middle distance and distance events and their sprint events

will also be strong. “If we can get some points in the areas that K-P/WC is strong in and pick up some points in the areas that they aren’t as good in, maybe we can stay close and give ourselves a chance (at a WVC championship).” O-A/BC-IG has won ive of the last six conference titles. In addition to Saunders, who serves as head girls’ coach and works with the hurdlers and high jumpers, the team coaches are Travis Chizek (throws and head boys’ track coach), Tony Napierela (sprints, long jumpers) and Holly Neutzman (distance runners).

Falcon boys’ golf coach looking for season long improvement Entering the 2018 golf season, the Falcon boys’ team returns six letter winners from a team that placed fourth in the Western Valley Conference championship tournament in 2017. The Falcons’ returning letter winners are seniors Ty Warnke, Blake Anderson and Ethan Zobel; juniors Landon Ray and Reed Godbersen and sophomore Austin Wardrip. Warnke and Zobel earned second team all-conference honors in 2017. Coach Kurt Hofmeister listed junior Kaden Ladwig and sophomore Jace Krayenhagen as golfers who may see varsity playing time in 2018. The rest of the roster includes: Senior—Austin Newquist Junior—Kolton Krajicek and Peyton Young Sophomores—Tyler Ehrig, Wyatt Wunschel, Isaac Newquist, Troy Hillmer and Gavin Parks Freshmen—Ahren Van Dusen and Owen Luft. The Falcons quali ied for the district tournament in 2017, but could not advance to the state meet as a team. Brandon Schwade, who was lost to graduation, did qualify for the class 2A state meet where he placed sixth as an individual. Coach Hofmeister is hopeful this year’s team will develop as the season progresses. “I am really hoping that we can just show a lot of improvement from the start of the season to the end of the season. We have a lot of potential, but we will need to get better as the season goes on.” O-A/BC-IG placed third in the regular season conference tournament series to qualify for the league championship tournament in Le Mars in 2017. The Falcons were fourth in the overall championship event. Hofmeister believes his team can be among the top teams in the conference again this season. “I am hopeful that we can be in the top three teams in the conference this year,” said Hofmeister. “I would also like to see

four or ive of the boys make it on irst or second team all conference. It would also be great for us to inish in the top three in the O-A/BC-IG Invitational Tournament as well as the conference tournament.” Hofmeister pointed to Westwood, Woodbury Central and O-A/BC-IG as the top teams in the conference. O-A/BC-IG Girls’ Golf Falcon golf girls’ team preparing for 2018 season The Falcon girls’ golf team returns eight letter winners from last year’s team that placed seventh in the regular season conference tournament. Returning letter winners are seniors Anna Van Dusen, Sarah Bergman and Jenna Henderson; juniors Emma Endrulat, Kelsey Dausel and Ellie Diersen and sophomores Corin Bower and Lauren Schwade. Van Dusen was a second team allconference golfer in 2017. She missed making the all-conference roster in 2016 by one stroke, based on results from the conference tournament series. The rest of the Falcon roster includes senior Jordan Hedberg; junior Lizzie Williams; sophomores Ellie Lansink, Liz Zobel, Autumn Schreiber, Jennifer Godbersen, Mary Bennett and Shae Baker and freshmen Bella Raasch, Carly Murphy, Megan Brummer, Jersey Bender, Lauren Lansink and Joie Matthies. While the letter winners have the inside track to varsity playing time, coach Byron Hartwig noted it is too early in the season to know who will fill out the varsity roster. The coach noted one of his goals for the team is to improve as the season progresses. “It is too early in the season to know a lot about the team. We’ve only been outside a couple of times (as of March 19), but it is hard to know much about the girls based on that. It is hard to tell how well we will hit based on what we’ve done inside. We hope to get better as the season goes along.” Hartwig said the conference should be pretty balanced this season. “Without knowing what all the teams in the conference have coming back (players), I’m not sure who the conference favorite is,” said Hartwig. “MV-A-O/CO-U has all of their girls back so they should be one of the favorites. We only beat them one time last season. “It should be a dogfight for second place. Woodbury Central should be okay and Kingsley-Pierson has a lot of girls back. And you never know about some of the other teams. They may have a freshman or two that

plays well.” The Falcons will get a handle on where they stand in the conference when they open the season next Tuesday, April 3, with the first of five league tournaments. Raptor track and field boys anchored by depth, versa lity

Ridge View Raptor boys’ track and ield coach Dale Tokheim points to his team’s depth and versatility as team strengths as the Raptors gear up for the 2018 season. The Raptors hosted the annual Ridge View Relays Tuesday, March 27. “We have 27 out for track and most of our guys can run anything from a 100 to an 800 and be competitive,” noted Tokheim. “We will have several strong 200 and 400 runners and that will give us a chance to compete all year long, including at state. If we can get some guys to believe they are 800 runners, we could have an outstanding 4x800 team. We will also be very strong in the hurdle events.” While most running events look to be solid, Tokheim has some concerns about the distance running and ield events. “I am really happy about the number of guys we have willing to run distance and mid-distance, but we don’t have a lot of experience at those distances. Right now, I don’t know how we will be in anything that needs an 800 runner. We also need to improve in the ield events to improve our team standing at all of the meets,” said Tokheim. The coach added the Raptors have some individuals that have improved from last season. “We have a lot of guys that have worked really hard in our strength and conditioning program all year and I hope that pays off in our sprints and throws. “The overall success of the team will depend on how healthy and how hard the individual athletes push themselves.” Among the top performers, and Tokheim’s thoughts on those individuals, returning this season are: Senior Andres Carbajal (200, 800 and hurdles)—Carbajal placed fourth in the 400meter hurdles at state and was on the state 4x400 team that placed fourth at state last year. He also ran on the shuttle hurdle team that quali ied for state. Senior Jacob Mitchell (100 to 400)— Mitchell quali ied for state in three events last year, leading off all three relays (sprint medley, 4x200 and 4x100). Junior Jacob Tokheim (100 to 800s)— Tokheim quali ied for state in three events last year, 4x400, 4x200 and the 4x100. Junior Jake Kliegl (100 to 400s)—Kliegl quali ied for state in two events last year,

4x100 and sprint medley. Junior Austin Degen (hurdles)—Degen was on the shuttle hurdle team that quali ied for state last year. Junior Kevin McGuire (100 to 800s)— McGuire was the alternate on several state events last year and will compete for several relay spots this year. Senior Lance Else (sprints and long jump)—Else really came on last year and placed ifth at districts in the long jump. Senior Jaxon Franken—Franken can run just about any event and compete. He also placed at both the conference and district meets in the high jump. “We have a strong group of hurdlers, including two guys (Carbajal and Degen) who were on the shuttle relay team that quali ied for state,” noted Tokheim. “Josh Frahm and several newcomers will also compete for a spot on the shuttle hurdle relay team. “We have three junior throwers returning. Ezra Miller placed in all meets last year and just missed going to state in the shot. Nick Gisch and Andrew Brockman hope to improve from last year and score some points.” Tokheim added there are several newcom-

ers to the team who might help the Raptors score varsity points. “Senior Jon Madsen is going to give us some depth at our distance and mid-distance and Billy Frazier will give us some depth in our sprints,” said Tokheim. “Junior Carlos Galvan should be a big help in the mid-distance and distance races as he had a great cross country season. “Sophomores Dylan Wood and Alex Movall will compete for some relays from 100 to 800. Chance Hansen will hopefully improve on his mid-distance times and give us some help there. Connor Pickhinke is joining us this year and will give us some help in the distance races. “We have a very talented freshmen group that will be ighting for some state relay spots. Kole Winkel, Jacob Brinkman and Beau Blackmore are all strong hurdlers and give us much needed depth there. Winkel is also a very good high jumper. “Jesse Coleman and Colton Dutler will be in the mix for all races from 100 to 400 meters. Gary Baughn will help us out in everything below an 800 and Ben Todd will compete for some varsity time in the distance races.”

As a team, Ridge View placed third in the class 1A state qualifying meet in 2017 and placed fourth in the WVC. Tokheim said Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central is the “frontrunner” in the conference race this season. “I think O-A/BC-IG, Lawton-Bronson and Ridge View will also battle to be in the top three.” Tokheim’s assistant coach is Matt Best. Ridge View girls’ track team can score points With 31 athletes on the roster the Ridge View girls’ track team should be able to score plenty of points this season. “We have a large number of girls out and we can score points in all of the events,” noted coach Angie Kohn. “We have some great team leaders in all areas who are vocally supportive and performance based leaders with good character. This team is not afraid of hard work while still having a good/fun time. We also have a great base of freshmen athletes who will help us out tremendously. “We did not have any seniors last season, but a few other athletes chose not to return to the team this year. We also picked up eight freshmen. They are a good mix of talent, some throwers, hurdlers, mid to long distance and good sprinters. They will help us this season and down the road as well.” The Raptors return three-fourths of the 4x400 relay team that placed 11th (4:16) at last year’s state meet. The returning runners are Kinzey Dutler, Madeline Else and Paige Todd. Emerson Else who also ran on the 4x400 team will miss this season due to a knee injury that occurred during the basketball season. In addition, Katlyn Wiese placed 26th at the state cross-country meet last fall. Ridge View also returns several other top performers from last season including sprinter Lexi Phillips, hurdlers Madeline Else and Kennedy Mason and distance runners Rachel Kenny and Erin Johnson. Beth Pickhinke, who is one of the team’s top 100-meter runners, is nursing a knee injury at the start of the season. The following is Kohn’s assessment of her team by events. Sprints/hurdle—“We gained a few new hurdlers this year so we are hoping to get a great shuttle hurdle team together. We still have Madeline Else and Mason (who also golfs) to be our leaders in this area. Both ran 100 and 400s. Joining them are Hanna Blackmore, Gracie Chance, Sarah Stamp, Anya Kistenmacher and Maria Mendoza. “The sprints will be successful. We just missed qualifying for state in the 4x200 and 4x100 last year with missed exchange zones and those girls are eager to get to run on the blue oval.” Middle distance—“We will be strongest in our 400s. But no matter how hard we try, we just can’t ind the person (people) to break 2:50 in an 800. That hurts us in the open 800, 4x800 and distance medley. We could have a very good

chance of qualifying in a distance medley if we could ind a quality 800 runner.” Long distance—“Our cross country team has helped us tremendously in this aspect. Our long distance runners were set on running as a team at state. They are not unfamiliar with long runs and hard work. These girls are the most vocally supportive on our team. Kenny does so much to help support our team emotionally. She, along with Wiese, Johnson, Blackmore and some freshmen runners, will do very well this season.” Field events—“Our long jumper (Paige Todd who has jumped at state) has had some problems with her foot in the past. We are hoping her foot is all healed up and ready to go. She along with Madeline Else are returning jumpers. Chance may also end up being a new long jumper for us. “We don’t have any returning high jumpers, but we did pick up Chance who will try high jumping this season. “Kara Richard is our top returning

thrower in both the shot and discus. She can throw a discus close to qualifying marks so we hope she can qualify for that this year. Richard not only throws, she is also a sprinter for us.” When it comes to the conference meet, Kohn is optimistic her girls can be among the top teams in the Western Valley Conference again this season. The Raptors placed third in the WVC meet in 2017. “We should end up in the top three or four again,” said Kohn. “It all depends on how well we develop over the season and what teams we are able to compete with. We will put our best teams and individuals on the track and in the ield and then we will wait to see what competition brings out of the athletes. “We do have some quality runners, but our ield events may not double up in points this year. The ability to ill out a full meet roster will help us score team points.” Kohn added Ridge View didn’t have

any conference championship events in 2017, but two girls did place second. Placing second were Wiese in the 1,500 and Emerson Else in the 200. When it comes to state qualifying, Ridge View will compete in class 1A this season. Raptor boys field young golf team The Ridge View boys’ golf team will be on the young side as it enters the 2018 season. There are 11 boys on the team, including five freshmen and four sophomores. “This season, we are looking to have a lot of growth week to week,” noted coach Chad Hustedt. “With a young team, I hope to get them shooting consistent scores at the end of the year when it counts. “There is a lot of opportunity for each golfer to make their way into the varsity lineup, which should create some great competition at practice each week.” The Raptors return two letter winners from last year’s team that placed sixth in the conference race. The letter winners are junior Brant Price and sophomore Jared Vohs. The rest of the roster includes senior Micheal Zobel; sophomores Nathan Yockey, Bradon Stowater and Grant Schmidt, and freshmen Wade Vincent, Logan Blum, Brecken Conover, Caleb Kistenmacher and Aden DeLance. Hustedt added he likes the attitude of his players. “All of my players are

very coachable and eager to learn the game of golf. All of our drills are competitive, which I think brings the best out of each player and prepares them for meets.” The coach said the team’s major handicap this season is its youth and inexperience on the varsity level. Hustedt listed some of the goals for this year’s team. “Our biggest goal is to compete annually in the conference tournament. We want to place in the top three in all conference meets, compete every week and better our scores each meet.” Ridge View will open the season next Tuesday, April 3 at a conference tournament in Sloan. Ridge View Girls’ Golf

Ridge View girl golfers shoot for consistency Heading into the 2018 golf season, one of Ridge View girls’ coach Brian Bode’s goals for the team is to strive for continued development. “We want to improve as the year goes on and become more consistent with each meet and to be the best short game team,” said Bode. For most of the 2017 season, the Raptors had just three girls out for golf, which did not allow them to

compete for team placings in tournaments. Those three girls are back this season along with two other golfers, which will give Ridge View the required four golfers to compete as a team. The returning letter winners are senior Julie Wood, junior Kennedy Mason and sophomore RayAnn Volkert. Senior Tori McDanel played in some meets last season, but did not letter.

The newcomer is Viv Leonard. Mason was a second team all-conference golfer in 2017. She also qualified for the final conference championship tournament as an individual. Bode noted a couple of team goals for this season. “We want to qualify as a team or individually for the conference championship. We also want to lower our scores from last year and each meet we compete in.” Ridge View will open the season Tuesday, April 3 when Woodbury Central will host the first of five conference meets in Moville. Bode pointed to Westwood, MVA-O/CO-U, Kingsley-Pierson and

Woodbury Central as the top teams in the WVC this season.
