Water Rocks! Visits the Garner library The Conservation Station visited the Garner Public Library on Monday, June 3, as part of the library’s summer reading program “Dig into Reading. Water Rocks! Student interns Gabe Domingues and Mariah Mahaney work with Sam and Brad Dodd on a “recipe for making soil. The brothers placed representative ingredients needed to make soil in the caldron: parent material, bacteria, earthworms, nutrients, organic matter, rain, sunlight and, most important-

ly, time. Other activities included making edible soil and seeing the rainfall simulator in the Conservation Station. The Conservation Station is a mobile learning center that travels across Iowa to teach others how to improve water quality and keep soil in place—building a Culture of Conservation. It can be seen at many events all over Iowa this summer and fall. Visit the Water Rocks! website for a schedule of appearances and

to learn more: www.waterrocks. org. It’s sister website: www.conservationpack.org offers a closer look conserving our natural resources. Water Rocks! is a partnership between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (USEPA Section 319) and the Iowa Water Center and Iowa Learning Farms.

Young Livestock Producer Group kickoff event Iowa State University Extension and several partners are initiating a young livestock producer group in North Central Iowa. A kick-off event will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 6 p.m. at the Hancock County Extension office in Garner, 327 West 8th Street. The target audience are young people under the age of 35 interested in any type of livestock production. Couples are encouraged to attend. They do not need to currently be involved in livestock production. A meal will be available that evening and those interested in attending are requested to RSVP by contacting the Hancock County County Extension office at 641-923-2856. Several industry speakers will briefly discuss the importance of livestock production and young producer involvement in the industry. The young producer group will

focus on management education, social interaction with peers, and networking with industry. Iowa State University Extension will assist in organizing the group and providing relevant education to the participants. This education would take place through workshops, tours, mentors and other methods. Several management or production education topics would be possible, for example financial management, risk management, or credit access to name a few. Participants will determine what topics are most important to them. Depending on participation and interests the group may focus on a particular species of livestock production and management or it may be a multi species focus. Several other groups are being organized across Iowa. County cattlemen and pork producers are

providing a meal for the evening. Other partners for the project include Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa State Dairy Association, Western Iowa Dairy Alliance, NE IA Community Dairy Foundation, and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. For more information on the organizational meeting on June 26 or on the young livestock producer project contact Russ Euken, Extension Livestock Specialist, at 641-923-2856 or email reuken@ iastate.edu. Those interested can also contact their local county extension office.

FAITH & WORSHIP

PLEASE, JOIN US IN WORSHIP... Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals. A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning: In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. Catholic

We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. Relent, Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. Yard and Garden: Lawn Mowing AMES, Iowa – Lawn mowing is the most time consuming practice related to lawn care – but when done properly mowing plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy, sustainable lawn. When mowing the lawn, what is the proper mowing height? Kentucky bluegrass lawns should be mowed at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches in the spring and fall months. Mow bluegrass lawns at a height of 3 to 3.5 inches in June, July and August. A higher mowing height in summer helps to cool the crowns of the turfgrass plants, encourages deeper rooting and provides more leaf area for photosynthesis during the stressful summer months. Mowing below the recommended range may scalp the turf and cause the turfgrass to deteriorate. Extremely low mowing heights decrease the total leaf surface area, carbohydrate reserves and root growth, creating a situation where the turfgrass plants are unable to produce enough food to meet their needs. This makes the plants more susceptible to drought, high temperature and wear injury. In addition, the bare areas created by a decrease in turfgrass density increase the likelihood of weed problems. Mowing too high can also create problems. Mowing above the recommended range reduces tillering and causes matting of the grass. Reduced tillering results in fewer and coarser plants, while matted grass creates a micro-environment that encourages disease development. How often should I mow my lawn? Kentucky bluegrass lawns should be mowed at the height of 2.5 to 3 inches in spring and fall. Set the mower blade to a height of 3 to 3.5 inches during summer. As a general rule, never remove more than one-third of the total leaf surface at

any one mowing. For example, to maintain a lawn at 3 inches, the grass should be mowed when it reaches a height of 4.5 inches. Mowing frequency is based on the growth rate of the turfgrass. Weather conditions, cultural practices (such as fertilization and irrigation practices) and other factors determine the growth rate of turfgrass. Kentucky bluegrass and other cool-season grasses grow quickly in spring when weather conditions are favorable. The growth of cool-season grasses slows in summer and then picks up again in fall. Fertilizing and irrigating the lawn on a regular basis promote turfgrass growth. In spring it may be necessary to mow every four to five days, possibly only once every one to two weeks in summer, with more frequent mowing again in the fall. Should I remove the grass clippings when mowing the lawn? When the lawn is mowed properly, grass clippings do not need to be removed or bagged. Small clippings filter down into the turf and quickly decompose, returning essential plant nutrients to the soil. Lawn clippings do not significantly contribute to thatch development. Grass clippings may need to be bagged or raked and removed when mowing extremely tall grass. You may also want to bag the grass clippings and use them as a mulch in vegetable and flower gardens. When should I mow a newly seeded lawn? Mow newly seeded Kentucky bluegrass lawns at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches when the grass reaches a height of 3.5 to 4 inches. Frequent mowing at the height of 2.5 to 3 inches encourages the grass to spread and promotes a thicker lawn. Is it a good idea to alternate the

mowing direction when mowing the lawn? Alternate your mowing pattern or direction each time the lawn is mowed. Repeatedly mowing the lawn in the same direction pushes the grass over rather than cutting it cleanly. Also, different mowing patterns reduce soil compaction and wear from the mower wheels. Does it harm the grass to mow the lawn with a dull mower blade? A sharp mower blade cuts the grass. A dull blade tears the ends of the grass

blades. The damaged tissue dries out, giving the turf surface a whitish appearance. Also, the torn leaf tissue loses greater amounts of water and increases the possibility of disease problems. Sharpen the mower blade at least twice a year. Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach answer lawn mowing questions; to have additional questions answered contact Hortline at hortline@iastate. edu or 515-294-3108.
